  • Gallagher explains pronunciation on The New Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
    The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

I met him at a Uhaul center I worked at more that 20 years ago. He came in looking for the “hitch thingy that makes the lights on the trailer work”. @Sith_dude I'm assuming you think he's overrated because he was only known for smashing watermelons. What I'm saying is that he has some decent material that didn't involve smashing things with a large wooden mallet. Case in point, this video. I'm saying he was a better comedian than the modern audience doesn't give him credit for.

@@TheMrBmurray 100% he was really bright, and his knowledge of politics and kills with wordplay made him far more than the gallagher 3000 or whatever it was called in that skit.. .Unfortunately at the time that hit so hard he was everywhere for awhile, so of course that is what people remember.. but his best material was definitely his politics stuff if you ask me, and his play on words was genius at times....

What started out being a wacky parody of food-processing veggie choppers became an albatross after a point, rendering him a novelty act after a while, from which he never quite recovered...especially after comics like Sam Kinison and Andrew "Dice" Clay came along and made him yesterday's news. A shame, since he made a lot of great observational points about a lot of different subjects over the years.

    He wasn’t wrong. In English,
read (reed) rhymes with lead (leed) and lead (led) rhymes with read (red).
And that’s before you get into cough, through, bough, tough, thorough etc.
And we think Welsh is complicated 😂

From a german, who learned english as fluent 2. language, its crazy how letters are "miss"pronounced in english!
in german we say them, how its written & not add strange noises to letters, that arent there 😅

I got to met him at a small venue back in 2007 and as I got out of the car he was walking to his car which was parked next to ours and opened the trunk to get some props so I said hello and asked if he needed help and he said well hell yeah but I'm not paying you lol. I got to go backstage and chat with him for a while and he was incredibly nice and way more intelligent then me but he started cracking jokes which made me feel smarter, after the show I saw him again as I was about to leave and he signed my ticket and had a beer with me.

And that's why English is actually the most difficult "language to master". Japanese is also hard for a very similar reason. But other supposedly hard languages are actually much easier, including Hungarian (there is only ONE way to read a group of letters, and only one way to write what you hear) and Chinese (only one way to read each character, and rarely 2). In Japanese, the same character can be pronounced 3-4-5 different ways, and you just have to memorize how every word is pronounced, just like English.

Then we'd have to discuss whose accent the new spelling would match. I live in Michigan and would struggle mightily if English spelling were changed to reflect, say, Glaswegian pronunciation. :)
