- Gallagher explains pronunciation on The New Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

Gallagher was such a genius. I met him and we talked for 15 minutes one day while waiting for a carry out pizza. He was very nice but still funny without trying.
I met him at a Uhaul center I worked at more that 20 years ago. He came in looking for the “hitch thingy that makes the lights on the trailer work”. It took me a minute to recognize him, as the gray hair had arrived. We talked for a few minutes during the transaction. Just a nice, naturally funny guy.
@@jeffreeves1567 Glad you had a similar experience to mine. I know he had a lot of troubles in life, but it was a life well lived.
Did he cut the pizza with a Sledge-O-Matic?
No, but that would have been epic. @@Sherwoody
Would that have been 'Rich's Pizza Joint' in Tinley Park ??
One of the best, and always had a sort of sparkle in his eyes
I never thought that time would make Gallagher so underrated as a comedian. People cannot look past the "smashes Watermelons!"
Gallagher was never underrated
@Sith_dude I'm assuming you think he's overrated because he was only known for smashing watermelons. What I'm saying is that he has some decent material that didn't involve smashing things with a large wooden mallet. Case in point, this video. I'm saying he was a better comedian than the modern audience doesn't give him credit for.
@@TheMrBmurray 100% he was really bright, and his knowledge of politics and kills with wordplay made him far more than the gallagher 3000 or whatever it was called in that skit.. .Unfortunately at the time that hit so hard he was everywhere for awhile, so of course that is what people remember.. but his best material was definitely his politics stuff if you ask me, and his play on words was genius at times....
What started out being a wacky parody of food-processing veggie choppers became an albatross after a point, rendering him a novelty act after a while, from which he never quite recovered...especially after comics like Sam Kinison and Andrew "Dice" Clay came along and made him yesterday's news. A shame, since he made a lot of great observational points about a lot of different subjects over the years.
The tough guy coughs as he ploughs through the dough
The cents I was sent have a scent that makes no sense.
The toff guy coffs as he ploffs throff the doff. Easy.

I feel so sorry for anyone that has to learn English
I loved him after finding his vhs tapes at a local rental store. my only gripe with his routine was "POEM" I'm from Boston area and it's always said like: Poh-um or Poh-em. not Pome.
BTW, "...boom the bomb is over." is a great line.
There is a Smothers Brothers routine where they talk about pome... I can't remember what song it is for
I dont understand the boom the bomb is over.
"POME" = PO-MEE
Tom gets poem right but then says it was written by a pomist.

Clean comedy hits so much different
Yeah, they actually laugh instead of cheer.
He had alot of sexual innuendo in his routines. He may not have come out and said the f word but he did push it. Still he's almost always gonna be in my top 10 and as ov today is number 5 l. I loved him
He had plenty of naughty words
He said lots of f words in other business.
Clean comedy, you say... within 30 minutes he already made fun of young women, the "little ugly introverted girls" part... Nah, not funny, not funny at all.
He actually has a degree in physics, he is very very smart
Wikipedia says he graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree, with a Minor in English Literature.
you cant be stupid & get comedy right!

Most definitely one of the best comics to ever grab a microphone and step on a stage!!!
In college after a discussion with the English Lit Prof I got my grade changed to an A. Every questions started "In you Opinion.....". Won the battle but lost the war. Next test the questions started with "In the opinion of experts what........." Those questions were harder.
Just because they were "experts" doesn't mean they are smarter... it's STILL an opinion.
Shoulda told your prof to square that one away.
My philosophy 101 prof used to take us to task for ever saying, "In my opinion...." Instead, we should say, "In my position..." or "It is my position that..." Why? because a position required actual support, whereas an opinion is free from that burden.
@@daviderickson8699I like that. Your professor had a great idea.
@@mrhoneystinger3676Sure, but experts are experts because they know A LOT about a given subject, and can most likely formulate a very complex an neuanced opinion that is backed by years of research, while a student's opinion is backed by what they have studied *so far*
As a self-proclaimed expert, that’s not how this works
He was a clean comic that could make everyone laugh. Always be one of my favorites.
Boy, Gallagher would be having some great fun with the world today. We'd be seeing special and special.
the great thing is, he'd have jokes about Biden AND Trump.
His career imploded long before that because he refused to drop the props. His political takes wernt so great either
These videos always bring me to the reality of my age..I remember watching him on "Showtime" back in the early 80's at the age of 20. Now here I am 62 and retired. Wondering where 40 years of my life went 🤔.
Loved him so smart and hilarious
Poor Ghallagher never even got to make fun of emojis.
"We're the drivers"
Keiichi Tsuchiya: "hold my boba"
Though, trough, tough, through, bough - all the "ough" are pronounced differently.
leave the "gh" off as it's not even needed nor pronounce ... does "gh" even have a sound ?
@@rhuephus The only thing I can think of is "Vincent van Gogh." Gogh as a Dutch surname is pronounced "Goff." Of course it gets pronounced as "Go" because English speakers would of course want to drop the "-gh" as you said lol
@@blaynegreiner9365 It's like the friendzone of words, we never actually pronounce those letters but we still let them be there so they keep that little hope someday they'll get actually pronounced.
its better than asian languages, where the same word can mean a dozen different words depending on the words that were used directly before and after it, the speed at which you say it, or some other strange variable that dosent change the word, but changes its meaning.
"I Love Lucy" did a bit with this, where Ricky had to read a bedtime story, and got confused by the English language where the story used words like these. Pretty funny bit.
I was in a Spanish Class that had a bunch of high school teachers. One of the teachers was complaining how hard Spanish was and that it didn't make sense. The Spanish teacher did the same routine about english words as Gallagher did but ended with the question "WHY?" The problem teachet didn't ask another question the rest of the semester.
I wrote this for someone once to demonstrate how terrible English is: "Though it was tough, I thought it through. I ought not touch the trough."
Using this
@@daviderickson8699 Ha!
And it one simple phrase, phonetics died.
@@daviderickson8699that's a mindfuck lol
As a lover of language, that was great!!
Always liked his word play. Him and George Carlin. Smart comedians.
Alot of people seem to get their opinion wrong nowadays. Even if your opinion is supported by facts.
Now that the media has said ridiculous things like "told her truths", facts, in some peoples' minds, are nothing more than opinion.
and then there are those who create their alternate facts, such as Faux Nuuz, OAN, tRUMPublKKKLans
@@rhuephus LOL Facts that are alternates to the lies being told are often the truth. All of the past few years "conspiracy theories" have turned out to be true after all.
Just look what happens these days to any schoolkid who expresses the opinion that there are only two genders.

I can’t help but laugh & remember the sledge-o-matic!!!

I absolutely love this guy😁😁😁😁 I've never laughed so much or so hard 🤣🤣🤣 Most of his stuff was just common sense, but he made it sooooooooo funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The end was the most unexpected comedy gag I've ever seen 😂
Saw him live, sat in the second row, and was one of the best shows I've ever seen. So funny!
It's not a slicer, or a dicer,
or a hopper or a chopper.
What in the Hell could it possibly be?
It's Sledge-A-Matic!
If you look at a lot of the comments here, you will find that people will dissect Gallagher and not take him for what he is or was. (sad)
The way he drives around at the end as me rolling. Love it!
R. I. P Gallagher and RIP Tommy Smothers
I remember in the 90s on Saturday mornings well into the early afternoon they would play Gallagher's HBO specials on Comedy Central, it was a *great* way to start the weekend with belly laughs
I remember this growing up in the 90s as well as a kid. Now that I am older, I understand and relate more to the jokes.
@@williamheath8827 oh yeah it's great to go back to those specials with everything you've learned since then and be able to enjoy the level of humor on two levels
This man summarized my entire middle school English class thoughts
They dont make comedians like this anymore...he was very funny, didnt resort to foul language, wasnt crude or overly sexual with his jokes. Guy was just funny. Maybe comedians these days just cant be naturally funny so they have to sink to vulgarity to try.
We bought a box set of his comedy and tried to play it for our kids. Had to shut it off due to foul words. We didn't remember it being that way whenever we saw him before.
@@debmarino5225 ugg. Anytime i had seen him was on t.v. maybe it was highly edited. Such a shame. Most comedy is so bad i would walk out myself even without my kids. I hear enough 4 letter words and sexual perversion in everyday life.
Aside from the comic, funny part, I think this comedian was trying to show how weird English is... And I completely agree with him 😂
We saw him in Laughlin many years ago and he was great .
One of my favorite bits
Best reason to watch HBO in the 80’s
He says tenses same tomb, afraid of Bomb😅😮😂and his necessary (😊in use ) comb😊
"If that's 'toom', that's 'boom', the bomb's over!" 😂
I love this as I'm phonically challenged and never could get this English Language stuff right I mean why have rules if there's always an exception or that the word isn't even an English word!
He was another one that was too far ahead of his time. Great comedian
1:27 I've had yogurt 1 year after the exp. date. Smelled fine, tasted fine, no problem. Don't ask why it was in the fridge a year.
Gallagher, a *great* comedian, took apart the English language the best!
George Carlin was pretty good at it, too.
"Once I got an F on a question that asked my opinion... I got my opinion wrong!"
Holds up so well
one of the smartest men of our time. Rest in peace sir. You were right about everything.
Such a talented man!
😂That is a phenomenal bit. I wish I could write something that good.
They played Gallagher recordings for entertainment during amusement park waiting line when I was younger. From what I heard there were a few acts akin to his around the time of Gallagher recordings and this one is a refutalation of stand ups Bill Hicks and Sam Kennison for school ethics.
This is the type of comedian we need moreof
Does anyone know where to get this entire episode of the Smothers Brothers from 1988? I've been wanting a copy of this to show my kids!! It was my favorite.
Edit. Looks like this may be episode 1 from 1989. Regardless, I cannot locate it anywhere. It had Geoffrey Lewis, Ronn Lucas, and other regulars.

AWESOME!
This is excellent. I’m going to use for my ESL class, but try to take out the mean comment about girls who win spelling bees
That knee question is bothering me I need to know the answer it's literally keeping me up at night
I suffer from same disease..
If your knees bent the other way, chairs would be about the same. You just would sit with your feet up. Also you'd be so bad at walking that you'd stop worrying so much about chairs, and worry about being able to get anywhere instead.
So underrated
"I got my opinion wrong."
Welcome to the 21st century.
🤣
Brilliant 😅
Genius.
An "F" for having the wrong opinion? That could never happen in today's world!
He came and did a set on my ship when I was in the Navy. I really loved his satire in that set. It's a shame that the set never got a proper special because he was very much making carlin style observations but in his own way and even poked fun at his own persona. Fun stuff. An angry Gallagher is even funnier than his 'whats the deal with' Gallagher.
He wasn’t wrong. In English,
read (reed) rhymes with lead (leed) and lead (led) rhymes with read (red).
And that’s before you get into cough, through, bough, tough, thorough etc.
And we think Welsh is complicated 😂
Thanks!
Excellent
I’m combing!
I love the way he thinks. His opinion was the same as mine. It was not wrong, it was misunderstood. 😃
Should you drive on a parkway?.
Should you park in a driveway?
Should you stop in a drive-thru?
Should you lift anything at a shop?
Got you ,,,,,, 😉😅
Add: why do we send cargo in a ship, but send shipments by car?
Why are they called "apartments" when they're all together?
Got an F on a question that asked my opinion. Got my opinion wrong HAHAHAHA!!! 😄😄😄

If only my teachers at school knew how to teach physics. i would have understood and engaged with it so much more.
Every time I think of the idiocy of the English language, I remember Gallagher.
From a german, who learned english as fluent 2. language, its crazy how letters are "miss"pronounced in english!
in german we say them, how its written & not add strange noises to letters, that arent there 😅
I got to met him at a small venue back in 2007 and as I got out of the car he was walking to his car which was parked next to ours and opened the trunk to get some props so I said hello and asked if he needed help and he said well hell yeah but I'm not paying you lol. I got to go backstage and chat with him for a while and he was incredibly nice and way more intelligent then me but he started cracking jokes which made me feel smarter, after the show I saw him again as I was about to leave and he signed my ticket and had a beer with me.
1:50 the audience laughed but it’s true….
Or how about a slogan Arby's had many years ago? Good Mood Food. All the words end in OOD, shouldn't they rhyme?
And that's why English is actually the most difficult "language to master". Japanese is also hard for a very similar reason. But other supposedly hard languages are actually much easier, including Hungarian (there is only ONE way to read a group of letters, and only one way to write what you hear) and Chinese (only one way to read each character, and rarely 2). In Japanese, the same character can be pronounced 3-4-5 different ways, and you just have to memorize how every word is pronounced, just like English.
Nahh bro we got at least two ways to pronounce a chinese word. (Mandarin and Cantonese) English is the most difficult "language to master", hahaha you've got to be trolling 😂😂😂
English needs a phonetic revision.
it's call eeengressh
then why is "phonetic" not spelled fonetic, which is the fonetic spelling for phonetic. and funny should be spelled phu-knee
Then we'd have to discuss whose accent the new spelling would match. I live in Michigan and would struggle mightily if English spelling were changed to reflect, say, Glaswegian pronunciation. :)
"CC" on this video is hilarious
