  • The cellist has been playing with the music of Bach for 58 years, and in 2018 released his third recording of the composer's suites for solo cello. Before this performance, Yo-Yo Ma told us that the composer he first encountered aged four, has become something of a best friend to him.
"It’s like having a great best friend in each chapter of your life" her said. "...a great companion, a person that is there to help you go through sticky wickets in life. He feels your pain, he feels my pain, he feels everybody’s pain and everybody’s joy. People go through illnesses, exams and difficult periods…and somehow it’s supportive."
Yo-Yo Ma performed the suite in one of London's most beautiful Baroque buildings, the Christopher Wern-designed domed church of St. Stephen Walbrook.

My mom used to play harp for the MN orchestra and met Yo Yo Ma both in America and Japan. She said he’s the sweetest most down to earth guy. I think what differentiates him is the “musicians timing” he’s obviously one of the most talented cellists, but it’s the the intimate connection with his playing- not too technical, though his technique is superb. It’s imperfect, but thats why it’s so expressive and heavenly. My mom said the best piece of advice she had from a teacher was to, “Play the harp like she was singing.” As a singer and cellist myself this makes so much sense to me. He’s singing through the cello. The end result isn’t letting the cello play, it’s him pouring his soul through the cello, which listens to him. Idk if that makes sense at all, but maybe it does to some musicians. The instrument is a conduit, you play for the cello, the cello is working for you

I thought this video would be recorded without real playing. But I was shocked when I heard 9:07 chair scratching sound. Lol. Thanks for this video really.

It's Yo-Yo Ma lol; he doesn't need editing magic to play his piece.

When I see and listen to a breakthrough music composition as the Bach's cello suites, I always imagine myself in the first ever audience that listened it. I try to compose the impact, the feelings and the thoughts of those very privileged people who were THERE, for the very first time. It is a hard exeecise, imagine ourselves between 17th and 18th centuries, in a small, dark room (no electricity), a few fellows in the appreciation of such wonder. Have anyone at that time had a thought such as "Wow! This piece of music will be of a great success in 20th century". Of course not. Bach's music was considered as outdated by his time. It was later re-discovered after Beethoven, by Schumann, Schubert, Wagner and other romantic composers.

His technique is superior. I personally am not a fan of his style though. Just goes in and out with no discernable emotional flow.

I kinda agree he is a super super talented musician though. personal I like the way my teacher plays it better she grew up playing cello. P.S. I play violin if you were wondering
