=Brahms Cello Sonata no.1 in E minor= •Allegro non Troppo• (0:08) •Allegro quasi Minuetto• (14:50) •Allegro, Più Presto• (20:38) Do Grande Mestre Yo-Yo Ma.
Mark Kautsky I was going to say the same thing myself. I once played this with my dad at the piano and myself on the cello, and I can tell you this is one of the most technically difficult songs I have ever played, and it was still a difficult piece for a cellist like myself to learn even though I had been playing the cello for 12 years starting at the age of 7. It’s not just about learning the notes and how to express each phrase but also about how to communicate and connect with the piano player. The cellist and pianist absolutely have to work together extremely well and know when it’s “their turn” vs “your turn,” and getting that part nailed down where you know you need to tone it down a little and let your partner introduce you into the next theme of the song requires an incredible amount of teamwork.
Patrick Higgins, Sir, I know you are are not going to like what l am going to say here, but you have NO idea how it hurts to hear someone call an instrumental piece of music a SONG. Please, call it a sonata, a waltz, a concert, a symphony, et. Call it by its correct name. Please, please, l mean no offense. Thanks. Have a good day. P.S.: l lived in England and Germany where I attended boarding school and medical school, respectively. The Germans have a mathematical language which demands 100% use of grammar.
The music I remember playing at a graduation concert when I was in the fourth year of university. I think it's music that conveys Brahms' feelings. I think this work is music with a deep feeling. I love this music
(Easter Eve, 2016) It's incredible to me that, as I write this, this performance is almost 31 years old. Ax and Ma perform with the virile energy of a still-present youth, and the wise maturity of seasoned masters of their art. I love how the second movement contrasts the not-quite-grandiloquence of the first and third movements with an almost impish, dark, gaiety. And, as I love the harmonic vocabulary of the Romantic period, I am enthralled with all of the harmonic surprises with which Brahms flowingly fills this masterwork. (What a nice thing to hear, just before I retire to allow the Easter Bunny to make his visit.) Addendum, a year later: This is one of the best-directed classical music vids I have ever seen. The director, or an assistant who could read the score and knew what was going on musically, so that that person could tell the director, several measures ahead of time what was coming to set up the next shot, did not miss a trick.
The video from at least a half dozen cameras was edited together post-recording. There was never a need to know ahead of time what was to come, because each camera was recording the entire performance.
The cameramen would have been completely stationary the entire time, except for the slightest movements of the cameras, they wouldn't have moved at all
@@colinjohnston9824 I disagree. Superimposition like you're seeing repeatedly here can't be done in post-production, at least not at that time. This may look like film, but it wasn't originally: To anyone who has worked in television production (as I have), this was obviously shot on videotape, live, with someone reading the score and giving the director the time to set up the next necessary shots, cross-fades, etc (as I have). It was then transferred to film at some point, which is what we're seeing here. My compliment stands.
