I am blown away by the elegance of this interpretation. Perhaps it could only come from someone who lives Bach. Such a perfect amount of rubato of rhythm and dynamics and always, ALWAYS a continuity of line which you hear lacking with "modern" interpretations. Seriously perhaps the best performance I've ever heard.

I don’t know if it is because of the baroque instrument and the way the piece is being played, and the serenity and clean sound she creates, but this is the first and only performance of this piece in which I can feel and hold images of nature, water, grass, trees, the forest, small animals, all of God’s creation untouched by humans from hearing the piece. It really connects us to nature and to God and brings peace.
Once you learn it then forget what you've learned and just play! I agree. This player doesn't let herself get stifled based on how anyone told her to play baroque. Another is Zuckerman on Mozart. Wish some of the composers were here. They would agree.

The more I listen to this incredible performance, the more subtlety and depth I hear, yet the net effect is an absolute and simple clarity. The companion video with Lucia Swarts talking about the suite is also well worth watching. Musicians often have trouble putting their thoughts into words but Swarts gives an eloquent commentary, and what amounts to a master class for anyone working on this piece. I was interested that, although she speaks of her debt to her great teacher, the late Anner Bylsma, her approach to the bowings in the problematic Anna Magdalena Bach ms seems to me much less dogmatic and more flexible. Bylsma could certainly make the crazy bowings work, but she has apparently opted to base her performance on the older and perhaps more accurate Kellner ms.
This was my audition piece in college, and even though I hadn't heard it in 40 years, I couldn't resist. I have to say, she really did play it much better than I did. Well, doggonnit!

The prelude of the piece is literally an introduction to the piece. The first sounds of the sixteenth notes repeated throughout the movement form a distinct line. As the composer does in his piano preludes, the level of technical skill increases towards the end of the movement, which is intended to open the hands and "warm up" in a sense. The Allemande is calm but gripping, with a structure appropriate to the character of the dance. The movement is sustained with sixteenth notes and breathes thanks to the eighth notes skillfully interspersed. Courante is again in the character of a dance. It creates a fast and joyful atmosphere. As in Allemande, the resting notes between passages that require technical skill are skillfully thought out. Sarabande consists of eight-measure phrases. Although the chords at the beginning evoke a polyphonic counterpoint, towards the end of the phrases, a plain and simple expression in which a single voice is heard dominates. Two menuets played one after the other drag us back into a typical dance atmosphere. The joy and sadness between the two menuet themes are skillfully observed. The last movement, the gigue, is a masterpiece, as in the composer's other suites. It ends the work with enthusiasm and joy.
You know how masterful piece and player are when you are engrossed in a book, not aware of your surroundings, and all of a sudden you get a particular feeling to run, and you look up to hear and see the Courante played. And now as I am typing and reflecting on this piece of information the Sarabande offers a wonderful air.
Very expressive hands. They seem to assist her achieve a certain clarity. Also, I noticed how she often lifts on the descents, the opposite of what one might expect. The dance movements allow for an imaginary open space filled with people. The sense of dance is well maintained. So here is a performance full of personality, yet broaching a category of how to approach this piece.
0:07 Prelude
2:39 Allemande
6:24 Courante
9:17 Sarabande
12:06 Menuet I & II
15:39 Gigue
Thanks

I love Lucia Swarts' playing ~ she revels in the deep sonority of the cello and the Suite...brava!
I came here because I watched the ad and couldn't resist. It's great, I wish there were more ads like this.
I'll be following the updates of your channel, your expression in music is wonderful.

This is the one I was looking for. The others tend to go at this very aggressively. I like suite one when it's played softly. Thank you.
Lucia Swarts is a truly great artist and a unique Bach Interpreter!
I wish I could upvote this each time I listen. I feel like I am reborn on each listen.
Me too, Miles! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. the original performance was witnessed by some 20 people . And than another 3M had a peak too :D awesome. This video quite likely has more views, than all of the live performances show attendees of this piece worldwide ever. NBS has currently more than 107M views. Thats more listening to classical carried out, than probably all of the performances managed throughout all of 19 century.
Imagine being alive listening to this Bach, made alive through this woman's worn hands, human compassion and intelligence flowing through wood and string into all of us, channeling all life experience. Absolutely astonishing.
she is yanger than u, beutiful then u, and how we see she is genius musition. God in her yang arms and beutiful ❤️!
Heaven .. thanks so much for such a beautiful present this morning at work. I will be glad to see this kind of concert personally. From South America Uruguay. God bless this wonderful hands that can play music.

Just magic. It's an honor to be alive and hear this interpretation.
Precisely
To be alive and hear this magical moment is why we're a;ll here! @@Marianofrv
why we're all here!
@@TheMarceladaSilva Exatamente, me sinto em paz!

Absolutely. I am surprised and blown away.
A strand of clear beauty in this stressful time.. thank you
This was my audition piece in college, and even though I hadn't heard it in 40 years, I couldn't resist. I have to say, she really did play it much better than I did. Well, doggonnit!
Oh how beautifully played! Simple yet so many expressive and you can see the beauty in the expression of the baroque cello
Echt unvergleichliche Cellistin!
I've never heard an interpretation quite like this. So expressive, subtle and Beautiful!
To specialize in the baroque cello is just fantastic and phenomenal in so many ways! I really admire her interpretation of Bach’s music as it brings me so much joy and comfort listening to the natural phrasing and mastery of her craft. Thank you so much Lucia Swartz’s for your devotion to music, words can’t express my gratitude. ❤
splendid rendition !!! Bravo Lucia Swarts for such soulful performance!! i'm speechless....

What beautiful souls, even the cello and the picture have one. Thank you for this moment.
so beautiful, even the camerawork/cinematography is great, nothing distracts from her great rendition of the suite
Seems like she's singing it. Totally beautiful and correct. Thank you, Lucia.
Listening to this Cello Suite makes me somehow understand that there is a mysterious armonie in the universe
The most beautiful version of this piece I've ever heard! 💜💜💜

Incredibly well filmed, recorded and performed. Top notch. This is as close as you can get to a cello suite experience. Great initiative.
Not just the piece, the piece is excellent, but the sound of the cello is very nice to my ear

I played this video to my newborn baby one hour after I gave birth.
Wonderful. A master of her craft. Such fine nuance pulled me in further the more she played.
You know how masterful piece and player are when you are engrossed in a book, not aware of your surroundings, and all of a sudden you get a particular feeling to run, and you look up to hear and see the Courante played.
And now as I am typing and reflecting on this piece of information the Sarabande offers a wonderful air.
This is beautiful. Like dark velvet. I need to listen this again with headphones to hear all the little nyances.
I've heard many interpretations of this, and this is definitive. The calmness and elegance. Thank you Ms. Swarts. This is sublime.
A good old instrument, a genius composer and an excellent performer make a perfect combination, they are all essential to unveil art.
