Party AI has been added, pathing is improved, load times reduced, and the hidden loading time is pretty much gone (after combat) with recent patches.

+Prachetas Patel As far as I'm concerned anybody without a high end computer's still going to have 20-30 sec load times at least. The AI is very basic and doesn't cover everything/covers everything but is extremely wasteful, still leaving a lot to be desired.
And pathing is still garbo
I love the writing style in Pillars. Every line is written to build the universe and create images in the players mind. Those with short attention spans need not apply. Enjoyed the review!

It makes you want to re-enact those descriptive scene in real life (I really get into the character when I roleplay,lol).
TheXPGamers It's written like old CRPG's were, written like a book. Back in the day when graphics weren't advanced enough to give a direct representation of the game world, developers had to get creative and be truly descriptive with their storytelling to paint a picture of the world that couldn't be represented visually.
A lot of people think that the way games have advanced is strictly linear, but I think that limitations breed creativity, and now that developers have everything at their disposal, it can make them lazy and not have to work as hard.

People with tinted classes tend to forget those issues. It isn't baldurs gate 2...yea baldurs gate used an already existing engine with a deep lore as base but pillars built their lore and ruleset from scratch! It just mimics and borrows a few things from the top three crpgs that were the standard for how to do it at the time.
Baldurs gate hd fixed ALOT of minor bugs and added better pathing etc to that game. I have the same issue with those that said that diablo 3 sucked while diablo 2 were the pinacle of gaming. Did those even try diablo 2 before the expansion and 1.06 patch ( think that was around the expansion for that game)

Ah yes, something that tends to still happen in some other modern games too...
Also the BG pathing that would take half your party on a roundabout route through parts of the map you hadn't been to yet and right into the arms of other enemies..

Galaxy Ninja yea which is the min reason why I like pillars better than bg these days. BG is still good but the you must...spamm is horrible and without enhanced edition have fun with severe pathing issues and a couple of broken encountersto mention a few.
with his death stare ability that for some reason didn't have a use limit. Lets spamm summons or guard vs death effects else wipe and the whole lets chain rest to get any ability/health back.
The extreme was every 2-3 enchounters if I recall because unlike pillars there are no per encounter abilities: Having played around with pillars endurance system and bgs health system I have to admit I prefer pillars. Could make the list longer but long story short bg isn't my nr 1 crpg anymore.
Go Obsidian! You guys need more funds, more developement time and more appreciation.

Pillars is easily one of the best games i've ever played. Its detailed lore is incredible, for me its a 9/10.
Same I tried the first one and I really do like it the only issue I have with it is the gameplay which at times is very overwhelming

I feal bad for all of the kids who say something like "review a real game." I know that a good amount of them are trolls, but the ones who aren't just make me legitimately disappointed. It's like they've never played through a game with real strategy involved.

I love RPG's and found PoE pretty lame, the combat was fantastic but everything else is mediocre. We are talking about obsidian here, the creators of New Vegas and Kotor 2 for fuck sake and those were rushed, they can do much better.

I just bought Tyranny and spent over 3 1/2 hrs in a row on it. Might consider checking out the rest of obsidian's log. Hence why I am watching this review. By the way, Tyranny is AMAZING.
Tyranny was pretty good. But I honestly felt like the ending was rushed. Act 3 only lasted like... 1 hour. You jump from being just a ''promising Fate-binder'' to a godlike being. I gave Pillars of Eternity a try and I didn;t like it. The combat... was too messy for me and auto Ai was bad...
Far from messy, I loved the micro management, but that's just me. Tyranny has simpler combat, but it's more epic.
Obsidian is really good. They always have some bugs or AI problems, but god damn do they have cool ideas for games.
Both games are excellent tbh, Tyranny was a bit short and honestly PoE was a bit to long for my taste (agreeing with Joe here about the story being a bit less epic than it could be, maybe that would have helped).. But yeah, both are excellent games. Must try Divinity: OS now :P
Tyranny was amazing like DA:O. What i hated about it was the lack of Hold Position command (or am i missing something?), and your companions sometimes when left unchecked disengages their enemies on their own causing them to get wounded.
I played path of damned in my first playthrough, and it was hard bc of the companion AI. PoE's companion AI where they wont act unless given a command is quite better than the AI in Tyranny.

I don't know if it's a complaint or a positive aspect, but... When you play this game, time ceases to exist. You feel like you've only been playing for 15 minutes, but you end up playing for 2 hours. Even though you're going to not have enough time to eat before work, you want to keep playing...
Ray Caburnay i had this exact experience with Freelancer back then. i startet playing at 6pm, i thought i played for 2 hours and should eat something, watched the clock. It was 4am in the morning. And i had to get up for school at 6am. XD

I absolutely loved this game, despite it's flaws. It was just so damn refreshing to play this type of game. Been dealing with game fatigue or what I call "same game" syndrome. It's a shame so many fun genres of games are dying out.

Now that I have looked Overlord up, it seems like something I might like. I'll try to get into the series when I have more time to waste.
I highly suggest you try out Baldur's Gate. It came out November 30th, 1998: the same day as Theif: The Dark Project which is another fantastic game I suggest you also try if you haven't. Graphically, they are not the best by today's standards, but they are great games in my opinion.
Not to be annoying or anything, but I would love to see you review Bloodborne. It made me smile when you talked positively about it in the beginning. Will we get to see a review.

Meryem Choubaili Unfortunately I don't think Joe is gonna get to it. Experience has has shown that the moment he stops playing and does another review before the game that came out first, he never has time to go back and finish said older game and make a review.
That is also why people should not expect a Dragonball review, the closer to release date the reviews come out the more popular they are and the expenses of making a review are not worth it to him to review a game that is to old when something newer is available. He even hinted that he may not be able to fit in a Mortal Kombat X review with him travelling to Poland April 14 for to spend a couple of days with the CD Projeckt RED guys.

Bloodborne is getting a lot of praise but not so much this game. In all fairness I would rather have him so this game since it needs the exposure, but I hardly doubt he wouldn't do a review or at least put bloodborne in his top 10 best games list, it's that good
I remember when I found that +3 Talking Greatsword in the sewer that you could have conversations with in BG2, the sword was actually an idiot who got turned into a sword. I never used another sword.

***** well thats a bit shortsighted... Its certainly built upon the same foundation as dark souls, but the setting and the changes to gameplay definitely give the game a completely different dynamic. From Software knows what the fans want. They dont stray too far from the formula just for the sake of change, but do enough to keep it fresh.

when i first saw this review, before playing, it convinced me to play it, but MANY of the negative points that joe points are actually fixed, what happens is that joe didn't finished the game, something he should do before review.
there are dungeons with epic loot and epic monsters, they are rare and well hidden, but they exist, the endless path is a mega dungeon and have many epic monsters with legendary equipment.
More like a lot of stuff was patched tbh. When I played this near launch, most of his complaints were pretty apparent.
Yeah just played it again this week, so much improvement from when it was just came out. The pathing though still atrocious >.>

for example, he complained about the lack of epic loot, but if he played the whole game he would see that there are plenty of unique overpowered items (not as overpowered as the items in BG, but still).
Lucas Melo If a game cant give you good loot for your current level during 60 hours of gameplay then its a valid complaint. Also 2-5 hours should be enough to judge a game. Not 140 hours-- unless you're totally brain dead and incapable of making up your mind about the experience you been going through.
I'm not too into cRPGs but cool to hear of another good title, along with Bloodborne! :3 Was gonna pick up The Order, but Bloodborne looks more worth my money.

Voyage Gaming Yeah, DO NOT GET THE ORDER. It has less than 2 hours ofgameplay and 3 hours of cutscenes. At the current price, it is not worth it.
Bloodborne took me 37 hours to 100%. I've played the shit out of the previous Souls games (played Dark Souls fr probably a thousand hours combined between my 3 copies of the game on all different platforms). In terms of the amount of time you'll spend playing, the dollar value is much moe solid. The gameplay is also a billion percent better

Well, I originally thought Bloodborne wouldn't be my style of game due to the difficulty (I'm no dark souls addict) and The Order seemed more MY style. But from what I've seen, it's a lot more than that.

I am a tactic player. The tactical aspect was lacking a bit in this game and pathing was so freaking useless, but I still love it and I am still playing so much out of the game. Hell, I even started to draw pictures for my Character Portraits myself xD

@@sladey21 If you haven't played a CRPG before, I'd highly recommend playing Divinity: Original Sin 2 instead (better story, almost everything is voice acted, on higher difficulties the AI is really smart, combat is easier to grasp, imo the music is the best in any video game ever (listen to Rivellon or A Tear in the Veil) and it's *amazing* if you wish to co-op with up to 4 people). You don't have to play the first one to understand what's happening in the second game. Also, you can talk to animals. Yes they are also voice acted.
Yes Divinity: Original Sin 2 is probably the best game I've ever played in this genre, it's a must buy.

SW:TOR sort of followed on from the KoTOR series, so it could create some continuity issues for doing a new KoTOR, especially given Disney's new, much tighter control over the IP.

Cherry Pauper Normally, you are reading probably 10 to 15 Percent of the time. Much more than other games, but in no way the majority of time. But the beginning is slow. The first 3 hours it is more like 50 Percent. There are a lot of difficulty settings. Easy Mode is OK for newcomers to the genre.
Cherry Pauper The reading is part of the gaming, so you will be playing the game the hole time, but if you can´t read or get bored with interesting stories like u could know them out of books then you won´t find this game enjoyable
If you don't intend to read you will neither have a story nor know how to win fights, so you need to be willing before you get into this game.

There IS a battle you can fight for your keep- the battle of Yenwood Field. It's only a small side quest which is easily missed but it's definitely there.

Man I feel like you went a little hypercritical of this game. The story IMO was just as rich as the original baldurs gate plot though not as strong as baldurs gate 2, the combat does have improvements on the old infinity style combat, sure it doesn't have spell combos like dragon age origins or divinity original sin but it is definitely more modernized then the original cRPG rule sets with the endurance, the per encounter systems and the area of effect\friendly fire mechanics. Personally I liked the combat much more that divinity's because it wasn't purely turn based. If you want to try to play it in real time its possible though hard as balls.
Yes, I was disappointed that they didn't include party ai systems like baldurs gate or Icewind dale had but that could easily be added in later or even nodded in (pretty sure some one is already working on it.) And some of the pathing wasn't that great. Maybe I'm biased though, baldurs gate 2 is still my favorite RPG of all time its only natural that pillars would rank up there too. The amount of content and how its presented alone makes it a strong contender for game of the year even only 3 to 4 months into 2015. IMO what truly makes pillars work so well is that while it has the sheer amount of quests you would find in an open world RPG it doesn't jam them down your throat or make it feel like a single player mmorpg like the elder scrolls games do and when you play it you really do role play your character because of how the game builds your characters story via your actions and how the scripted events change to accommodate those choices. Playing as an evil bastard will present a different set of choices then playing as a neutral mercenary or do gooder.

Pillars of Eternity, Best game for me since Baldures Gate II
SwissCow85 That's odd. For me Baldurs Gate 1&2 is the only 11/10 game ever, and I really looked forward to Pillars. And sure enough, a lot _was_ good with it, but the story... Oh my god, the story in Pillars was abysmally mediocre and downright boring, and in an RPG, you can't cut corners with the story being told. I was so very disappointed with PoE, not only because of that, but also because of its second largest flaw, the uninteresting characters. Which is also a big no-no in RPGs.
I've been playing RPGs since Bards Tale, and its seldom I experience disappointment with RPGs, but what do you know, PoE did it.

I remember playing this game during it's release. Even now I'm not a huge fan of the game but I have a holiday coming up where I need to just sit down and grind through all the extensive reading the game throws at you. I went down the route of something like a paladin before and I just started Chapter 3 before stopping - so many wasted hours. Even got it as a pre-order for the little space piggy.
Other Joe is SERIOUSLY the biggest refreshment you could have bring to your reviews..He is absolutely hilarious :D

Achillez I have to agree; the only game (series) that tops Neverwinter Nights 2 is Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, and the only thing I didn't like with them was that they used the D&D rules 2.0, which didn't have feats and a more developed levelling system. It didn't matter though, because for me, Baldurs gate will always be an 11/10.
Rgarding NWN 2 though: that was a surprising improvement over the first game, which I only remember as "the game of 4 fetches". I can't for my life remember the main story in that piece of trash.

I just started the game, 10 hours in and I'm loving it. Its been awhile since I've been engaged in a game. The mechanics of the game are fantastic. Review is spot on.
