Obsidian, CD Projekt Red, Larian, and inXile bro. My holy grail of western RPGs. Obsidian are probably the most severely underrated studio to exist in mainstream gaming. Whatever unwanted sequel to develop they get handed to in half the budget and time, they deliver, and by God they deliver in spades. Fallout New Vegas. Legendary title and one which after almost 6 years still isn't gone from my system.
ReiGnJuste CD Projekt Red and Obsidian are one of the few companies still giving a shit about releasing quality games with complete content... Rockstar didn't even release the online component to GTA on time with the release of the game. I really don't understand why you would think CD Projeckt Red is somehow behind them, The Witcher 3 and it's DLC's are possibly some of the best content released in the past many years of gaming, even if you don't personally enjoy them ignoring the quality is just ignorant.
To hear Obsidian talk about how close they came to closing down is really hard. They have been my favorite studio for as long as I can remember. They were always making the game that I was most excited for. They were always doing the project that most interested me. I still so clearly remember the day I found out about the Kickstarter for the first Pillars game. I immediately shared it on facebook and in private messages to all my closest friends. At that time I was a starving student and couldn't afford to contribute financially so I was determined to get it in front of as many people as I could who I knew could and would contribute. I'm so happy this studio is still going strong and I can't wait to throw all my money at everything they do in the future. Stay the course guys. Own your own titles and don't be beholden to any big publishers money again. As long as you only need to depend on you, you will do great. I know it!
@@egoalter1276 Sadly(ish) they did sell to XBOX since I posted this but if they were ever going to sell to someone who would publish there stuff I would have immediately hoped it would be Microsoft of Sony. So, I'm not mad.
I've played Pillars of Eternity, its sequel Deadfire, and am now enjoying The Outer Worlds, but I had no idea Obsidian was so close to losing it all. Thank god for Kickstarter!
Pillars 1 and 2 are great RPGs. I'm so glad that Obsidian was able to keep going, and now they are in a much better place financially with the Microsoft deal.
already watched it but gonna rewatch it again, this shows how much passion went into this game, hats off obsidian!!! MAKE POE2 the baldur's gate 2 of this generation!!!
I doubt that will happen because they will try to make POE2 an overly balanced, and thus tepid game instead of allowing world-enhancing, life-breathing, extremely exciting imbalances like we saw in baldur's gate 2. they already showed how much they care about overbalancing their crpgs in POE1 (years after release and they are still spending resources to balance a single-player game...). they don''t understand the difference between making a really good game with a cool world and a GREAT, 10/10 game and world. they are too scared to make the risky sacrifices of making some gamers who just want to beat the game on the hardest difficulty without falling into "trap builds" or not being good enough unhappy. they want the maximum amount of people to be intellectually validated instead of truly challenged (because it means more profits, of course). too scared to allow broken weapons and spells into their game because they value triple crown solo achievements more than they do constructing a world that is surging with palpable, realistic imbalanced life.
Hugh Janus, I think that this is the new direction of Obsidian. It might be because they've been constantly existing on the verge of death, albeit being the only company to actually experiment with their games. Unfortunately, it made them something akin to starving artists. At this point, they might be burnt out. They kept making masterpieces, which provided them cult-recognition, but no profits (KOTOR2, New Vegas, Mask of the Betrayer, Alpha Protocal etc). It's pretty sad actually, considering they're technically the continuation of Black Isle (there's also inExile, who are in a similar position). I think that the old Black Isle/Obsidian magic is dead at this point. You can blame the industry and the tasteless consumers for it.
there's only Josh Sawyer and Feagus left from Black Isle and none of them were involved in Fo or PS:T. Obsidian being the continuation ended after New Vegas didn't score its 85 meta critic bonus and people got fired or just left in disgust... Luckily, the old guard aren't the only creative forces at play and the new crop of Obsidian devs are doing well enough on their own.
BomimoDK, they still have Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky from Black Isle (they rejoined recently). But that's beside the point. My comment was referring to the idea that Obsidian will not go back to their experimental roots - I was responding to Hugh Janus. What I'm saying is that modern Obsidian can no longer afford to screw themselves over by releasing overly ambitious and experimental, but buggy AAA games (or even niche cRPGs). They now prioritize polish and balance over originality, which is fine, since the company has been screwing itself for too long (which is also evident from this documentary). I'm saying that we shouldn't expect them to make anything original and mind-blowing as they no longer adhere to the Chris Avellonian experimental/creative game design philosophy (which only got them into trouble financially).
I knew making a game is a hard thing, but after seeing this, I now have a completely different understanding of how actually excruciatingly demanding it is. All the more to you Obsidian, for making a game that I'll remember for the rest of my life
Artistry vs corporate responsibility. Josh is an intellectual beast. Much love to the Obsidian team. Thank you all for enduring hardship, you have enhanced my life.
Hey Pally, I've been a fan of yours for a while now. I just wanted to know if you ever wished for time to play games like this (a CRPG). I know you're a big Dark Souls fan but I was just genuinely curious if you think you'd have the patience to play games like this (or if you'd even enjoy this; don't know much about your game likes outside of those you do videos for), cause I think you probably don't have time haha. Love the work and keep it up man!
Once in a while I open up this video and watch it and it makes my heart ache in a beautiful way to see how this game that has rekindled the fire that was Icewind Dale and Baldurs Gate, my childhood loves within me was made. Thank you, Obsidian. Thank you dearly.
As one of my first Kickstarter Backings and also my first one beyond $1K I am very proud of what this game has become. Kickstarting a Game Project for me is not only about the game itself, but about the company that creates it and about the games to follow. So when I put my money there I was hoping for not only a single great game, but for a successful series of games that would keep my passion for those deep and engaging RPGs going. I am very happy now that exactly this scenario has come to pass. For Pillars 2 I hope that existing technology and art, as well as routine will help you (Obsidian) to create an even greater game with less setbacks along the way, so you don't have to cut as many things as you had to from POE 1, which is even with it's (very few) flaws an epic game that noone who plays RPGs miss.
The utmost highlight, for me, is when they finally released the game for PS4. You have no idea how enjoyable it is playing CRPG with a controller. I've been playing Deadfire on my PS5 and it's really a blast! Especially with the console commands provided within! Thank you, Obsidian!
8:13 thats so empowering when you see those numbers climb up im glad this studio made it you could sense the passion just by looking at them and when you hear them talk
In a world where so many of us live the "groundhog day" effect of everyday seeming no different from the one previous, I say to ALL the staff at Obsidian, thank you...and never forget that moment when you felt something truly rare and amazing. You created something that made many a groundhog happy for a sliver of time!
Pillars of Eternity, mixed with the deeper consequences of Tyranny (especially the consequences of the choices made at the character creations) - that would be my *dream game* ! I absolutely *loved* Pillars and enjoyed most of Tyranny - but the lack of enemy variety, restrictive combat and very restrictive build choices made much of the "dungeon crawling" of Tyranny a chore for me.
This might be the definitive videogame development documentary. You guys should put this up on Netflix so more people can see the amazing journey of this game.
One of the best games I've ever played and now I know the story behind it. I'm not old enough to have played the classics it was inspired by but in 15 years this will be the classic I look back on with love.
Yea sadly it's a big mess... But I wanne play the exile again. I tried SW:TOR for 2 months but I'm not a MMO guy. It's looks okay but lacks the kotor feeling.
Thank you for taking the risk. Pillars was the glorious return of my favorite genre, and it pretty much rekindled my love for the industry. The best game I've played in YEARS.
Just want to say thanks for being awesome guys, I've already broken the THREE HUNDRED hour mark with Pillars and I'm already starting another playthrough with 4 Ranged rangers (bow, pistol, rifle, arqubus) w/ Bear companions, a Nature God-like blunderbuss wielding chanter (a singing tree :D) and a Bear Druid (found a mod to make spiritshift permanent...still pretty weak but its just for fun, will lower diff is necessary). The ONLY two complaints i really have beyond minor stuff is the lack of mod support (starting to burn out w/o this) and the lack of multi-player...my girlfriend and I are loving playing through BG1 together (hopefully the new expansion is fun) and not being able to share this with her is a real bummer since she get's too frustrated playing these games alone (new to gaming and DnD) In short thanks for being awesome and please consider mod support and multiplayer in PoE2 to extend the life of the game and so your fans can share the experience with each other :D Now the questions is...to play Tyranny or Tides of Numenera next?
This is so inspiring for me as a writer and worldbuilder to see something that's a labour of love become so big and so well loved and it's amazing to see a developer who I think is brilliant finally break out on their own, brings tears to my eyes in all honesty...
I just finished Pillars of Eternity 1 and then i instantly bought Deadfire Obsidian Edition. It had a lot of Neverwinter Nights 2 elements ( a game which i loved - except storm of zehir, that was meh). You guys gave me The Exile and Darth Traya in KOTOR2, The Courier, Dead Money, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road in Fallout NV. Now you have given me The Watcher in Pillars of Eternity. I will continue to support Obsidian Entertainment. You have proven a constant creativity and vast complex stories in games. Keep doing what you are doing and thank you for what you did for gaming.
Thank you Obsidian, Bioware, Bethesda, Piranha Bytes, as well as Tolkien and Robert Salvatore for making my childhood amazing. You were my best friends.
Watching this again after the announcement of Avowed. This really was the start of something wonderful for Obsidian and I'm glad they pulled through. :D
beautiful and fantastic documentary. just bought this game today and am so excited to play it. I've only play about 6 hours of BGEE. but I know I loved that style. never played a game like this before. what a story. Obsidian you guys are all stars.
The release of this documentary isn't a coincidence. An amazing piece of marketing. Seeing the effort that was put in, with the resources available. I can respect that. Based on the documentary I will pledge for PoE 2. Well done.
I know. They do Fallout better than Bethesda. That is why I was wishing they did it instead. With any luck they will get another crack but who knows it is looking very doubtful now.
I've been wanting to play it but I play wizard in these types of games and I hear they aren't OP gods in this one. I heard druid is really op tho so maybe ill play that
I beat the PoE on the hardest setting, solo on hardcore with Just a wizard. Killing all the dragons and all the archmages...... getting "THE ULTIMATE" achievement...... I would argue that Wizards are fucking amazing.
Adam strongly resembles a character in the Fallout series. Not a particular character or anything, he would just fit in as an NPC. Something about those beady eyes and smooth pale skin.
What a documentary. Thanks for everything, this is a really good source of inspiration for every lover of what making games is about, starting from a dream, moving to an idea, and then translate it in reality. Really great respect for Obsidian.
Thank you Obsidian for creating some of the greatest experiences I have ever had from. I Have lost faith in all game studio's apart from you. Some times darkness can show you the light.
So grateful for everyone's hard work. I am loving being in the world of Pillars of Eternity. I have a busted ankle so will have lots of time to play when I get home.
Outer Worlds is fantastic and it’s wonderful to see what this team went through to get here! PoE was just a beautiful return to D&D lore and gameplay! Thank you obsidian!
Interesting video on mostly the technical process of creating a huge rpg game. But, even at almost one and a half hour, they skipped at least two very important areas that are sadly missing. One is the whole process behind the concepts, story and lore, character development, etc. The other is the voice acting. I would have loved to see how voice actors are assigned to a character, voice directing, etc.
"The game is late until it ships, but it sucks forever." EVERYONE needs to follow this mantra. I'm looking at you, Rome 2. There's nothing I hate more than wasting my time on a game that could've been better. Waiting for something awesome is a hundred times better than wasting your time on something crappy, only to go back to doing what you'd have done while waiting anyway. ;)
Wow it’s crazy to see how much work, passion and love goes into crafting a game over years.. only for it to be given an arbitrary number on the day of release and then people move onto the next.
Watch this video a year or so ago, rewatch it a couple of weeks ago during the overtime at work, never played a classic western rpg, but seeing the passion you guys put into this game... Well, I end up buying the complete edition for PS4 (cannot help, I'm a console peasant) out of respect for all of you. Hope this adventure introduces me into a whole new genre! Keep the good work ;)
So that is what will be industry... majority of people are casual and good games will only happens if players make them possible. We always be with you.
*Pillars of Eternity: Winter March 1&2* and *Divinity: Original Sin(Also the Enchanted Version)* Thanks to this type of game... I have both Love & Hate relationship on reading non-voiced dialogue. And it was fun to read but also drive me crazy! seeing myself scratching my head from reading a long-dialogue/Book just to get what the quest meant to be or to get the clues from the quest or a book. Also, Good luck on making *Pillars of Eternity 2*.
Love it when Wales gets a mention! As a Welsh man myself its kind of obvious but maybe it isnt to everyone, every single fantasy Elf language I've ever heard or read is heavily inspired by Welsh. OGGIE, OGGIE, OGGIE!
What an amazing watch, you can really tell the heart and soul they poured into this game, and it really is an amazing RPG, well done and heres to Pillars 2: Deadfire.
Loved both POE and POE2! Can't WAIT to see what you guys deliver with "Avowed!" If you manage to bring your story-telling and depth of gameplay to a first-person roleplaying game I'm sure you'll have yet another masterpiece on your hands! Thank you for all the hard work!
Thank you Obsidian for being truth with your principles. Big millionaire developers that became casual to survive could take one of two lessons from you.
Ive never played this game but I have watched this documentary many times. So cool to see how passionate the team was to make this. Maybe I should finally check the game out.
I love you all, Obsidian! Thanks for making me keep my faith in game devs and in gaming in general. You got my support and deep respect! I wish you all the best. Hugs and love of a true fan! :)
Don't be silly. Trump has no authority to change what we are as a nation. People don't realize how little power Presidents have. It's why Obama never did anything noteworthy in 8 years other than kill OBL. (Affordable Health Care act was crafted by Congress, not Obama).
Amazing video, I picked the game up on a whim after hearing a friend raving about it. Holy shit I have never loved a game so much, it just feels good to play.
Kinda sad that this was the game that saved the studio, but it is such an afterthought to the larger gaming community. Many gamers have at least heard of The Outer Worlds, but not PoE. Avowed looks like it is set in the same universe as PoE, but I don't suspect that will increase it's recognition.
Many games made today are so full of gimmicks and cheap thrills the actual game is a mile wide but only an inch deep. Obsidian is one of the few developers that knows how to fill a game with life and create an exceptional product. Some of my best gaming memories stem from their games!
I have a lot of respect for Obsidian. Let me tell you my deepest wish for you guys: Larian is making Baldur's Gate 3. Obsidian should make Icewind Dale 3. I have spoken! ;)
Thank god for Obsidian! These guys just became my best hope for a resurgence of great CRPGs. You guys came a long way since the underdog to BioWare that makes buggy RPGs with great ideas. Now, if there is any studio that can put slap BioWare on the ass for them to actually do some soul searching, it is definitely Obsidian.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Really interesting insights into your thoughts and feelings during the whole Project. You, ladies and gentlemen at Obsidian, are full of win. You were able to bring back the magic of those old Infinity games we all love and to create something wonderful and new. Looking forward to part II! Thank you.
Keep up the work guys. I never played these games as a kid back in the day, but I fell in love with Pillars. Thank you for introducing these great games to me.
Obsidian and CDPR are the reason I still love gaming. I will support anything you cook up. I love you !
Don't forget Larian. :)

Considering how bad Tyranny was, I'm no longer that eager. =(

Way too streamlined compared to Pillars. I've got 300 hours in PoE but after 25 hours I was done with Tyranny.

Funny how the exposure on the camera made his screen appear blank (white). WORKIN' REEEEEEAL HARD.
So happy that this type of things happen and to people to support this type of 80 90 projects
What I just want is another good Fallout.
I would have loved for them to have done fallout 4 but maybe they can do another one.
Fallout 4 was so, so, so bad. :-(
they don't own the IP ZeniMax do it's not up to obsidian
I know. They do Fallout better than Bethesda. That is why I was wishing they did it instead. With any luck they will get another crack but who knows it is looking very doubtful now.
have you tried wasteland 2?
its kinda touching when people have passion for what they do its something that is getting rare these days.
Every fiber of my being wants that isometric Pathfinder game. Please Obsidian. The time is now.
Well well well... not obsidian but we got an excellent pathfinder crpg
It really is about time to finally play PoE, isn't it?
I've had this game in my library since release and still haven't booted it up. One of these days I'll have a spare 100 hours to burn.
Oh sweet. Were you a melee wizard though?
I used a 1h sword and a shield, but the overwhelming majority of my damage was from spells.
Really great respect for Obsidian.
will buy anything obsidian makes.
One of my favourite devs in the industry. Keep making awesome games
Outer Worlds is fantastic and it’s wonderful to see what this team went through to get here! PoE was just a beautiful return to D&D lore and gameplay! Thank you obsidian!
1:16:50 Yay! Super BunnyHop!
Yeah fan here as well! ;D I was pleasantly surprised when I heard his voice. He's such a fantastic writer(journalist)
Indeed
@superbunnyhop i hope he have seen this, he should feel hella proud
Thank you for everything... and please don't stop doing what your doing.
cause you make life worth living.
Amazing amount of resourcefulness that went into this game. These people are truly admirable.
No interview of Chris Avellone the writer too.
It’s sad he quit.
"The game is late until it ships, but it sucks forever."
EVERYONE needs to follow this mantra. I'm looking at you, Rome 2.
There's nothing I hate more than wasting my time on a game that could've been better. Waiting for something awesome is a hundred times better than wasting your time on something crappy, only to go back to doing what you'd have done while waiting anyway. ;)
Watched again. So proud of Obsidian and what they struggled through. Congrats
What these people did was inspirational. Can't believe it's already been 2 years since Pillars came out
Wow it’s crazy to see how much work, passion and love goes into crafting a game over years.. only for it to be given an arbitrary number on the day of release and then people move onto the next.
Yeah. “Reviews” are terrible metric to measure games.
*Pillars of Eternity: Winter March 1&2* and *Divinity: Original Sin(Also the Enchanted Version)*
Thanks to this type of game... I have both Love & Hate relationship on reading non-voiced dialogue.
And it was fun to read but also drive me crazy! seeing myself scratching my head from reading a long-dialogue/Book just to get what the quest meant to be or to get the clues from the quest or a book.
Also, Good luck on making *Pillars of Eternity 2*.
the way they handled the first trailer music is for sure very inspiring
Imagine If Obsidian would have closed. It would have been such a shame, because of how talented the studio is. Dang.
Pillars 1 and 2 are two of the finest games I've ever played. Thank you so much for making them, Obsidian, and for designing them so well! ❤
Love it when Wales gets a mention! As a Welsh man myself its kind of obvious but maybe it isnt to everyone, every single fantasy Elf language I've ever heard or read is heavily inspired by Welsh. OGGIE, OGGIE, OGGIE!
Subtitles would be a good point (even if they are in english). Those of us who are not native english speakers will appreciate it ;)
Totally agreed.
I am SO glad you persevered! Gamers would have missed out on some really fantastic titles.
What an amazing watch, you can really tell the heart and soul they poured into this game, and it really is an amazing RPG, well done and heres to Pillars 2: Deadfire.
Id just like to say you guys nailed the music! Thank you for keeping it internally
Stay true to you and your vision, you guys earned the success you are having and we as gamer's and backers are proud to be a small part of it.
More than the game being good, I'm glad I got to contribute to making sure the people behind some of my fondest gaming memories can keep going.
The soundtrack portion blew me away.
I love the Pillars soundtrack so much, and to see how it was put together... man...
RPG forever!
It's awesome to see how the project came together!!! I've wanted this game for a while and this convinced me to finally buy it.
I love you all, Obsidian! Thanks for making me keep my faith in game devs and in gaming in general. You got my support and deep respect! I wish you all the best. Hugs and love of a true fan! :)
this is what makes America's creativity, people from all backgrounds and ethnicity working together . RIP America , you were once a great nation
Don't be silly. Trump has no authority to change what we are as a nation. People don't realize how little power Presidents have. It's why Obama never did anything noteworthy in 8 years other than kill OBL. (Affordable Health Care act was crafted by Congress, not Obama).
48:20 the music in this game is fantastic. Seeing how it was made: recorded by amateur musicians in a DIY space - that's about as "indie" as it gets.
Congrats on reaching the funding goal for Deadfire. You guys deserve all the success in the world.
Let me tell you my deepest wish for you guys:
Larian is making Baldur's Gate 3.
Amazing documentary to watch. Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the labor of love the obsidian team went through.
Just got the game and I can see that this was a labor of love. Why? Because it shows. Thank you so much.
Wow, I can only imagine the amount of stress yet excitement that went on when you all made this reality.
Can you add subtitles? I am not good in English, and a lot of fans from not english-speaking countries too
Yes, please. And with subtitles in english, people can add other subtitles in other languages :) It would be perfect!
I can add spanish subtitles! But firstly I must read, I can understand very good only speaking :(
I really enjoyed watching this video.
Great work guys, I super loved it.
Friggin amazing journey Obsidian! Thanks for sharing the creation process.
