I think Ryleighs boredom stems from the show’s seemingly simplistic nature during the some of the first season. The large amount of world building this series has, puts the character introductions on a slow burn. The new members on the couch should remember names, faces, and actions taken by them, because the episodes move beyond the “one and done” story arc style. These are characters you’ll be seeing again. Their interactions and relationships will be the future source of conflicts and intertwining developments that gives the show its acclaim, and will help alleviate that stale story feeling Ryleigh’s encountering. Right now, your focus is only on guessing what’s going to happen by the end of each episode, but soon you’ll be more focused how things will turn out by the end of the season, and then the shows full conclusion.
No offense to those that found the first season boring, simple or slow but like I just don't get it sometimes. With a multiple season show, you should usually expect the first season to basically be the foundation of the story. Introducing the world, characters, etc. and it later being built upon as the story progresses. Some of the stuff that comes back later is amazing honestly.

The newbies aren't entirely sure what to expect and having the majority of the couch clamor about how great it is can leave for some uncertain expectations when they have only just dipped into it. I usually introduced shows to my friends as I watch them as "I think this is something you will really enjoy" rather than it is the best of all time, and then I tend to warn them when something becomes exposition heavy but to pay attention to details without being too obvious, because some people are just not interested in exposition. Upon first watch for me and many nostalgic viewers, we had the luxury of growing with the slowburn and really being left in the dark of what was going to happen, you tend to be a collective with like-minded people in fandom. So I don't blame the new viewers being a little confused on what to expect, maybe a bit left out when so many people are making references (not that it's their fault and that they should be quiet about it, but that's what I think might be happening). I really hope they can retain a lot of it because it's true that once the exposition settles, the tone shifts unforgettably, but fortunately this show doesn't make it jarring, it just feels like it's the natural course of storytelling. I think they will eventually fall into it. Even in the first season, the infamous episode 12 is when it really establishes itself and its primary characters, and newcomers at that point TEND to build a connection with characters. Once they can actually call a character a favorite, I think liking the show beyond superficially is effortless, and it starts with that ep.

@@lalalalisa41 It's more of an attention span thing. I think many shows held in high regard in the past simply wouldn't hit with modern audiences. Like this generation of kids may not have been as attached to Avatar if it came out in the 2020s as we were in the 2000s. Many adults also seemingly can't handle long term build up. They consider it boring...when instead they should be soaking up the development.

I can't remember what reaction channel said this, but they said something along the lines of "every ATLA episode is like a pot of gold. some of the season 1 episodes are smaller pots of gold, but it's still a pot of gold!" and tbh I hold that to be true to this day! I think giving the characters time to breathe and develop and just be kids in season 1, and also giving the audience time to digest the worldbuilding, really pays off in the later 2 seasons because they can just pull out all the stops. They know the audience is pretty familiar with the basics, so the show can take it to even better levels. Can't wait to see them react to the rest of this season and the rest! Hope y'all are able to binge them soon because I'm hype now for the reactions 😂

This episode really sets up the conflict with Katara and the way she's treated by the north pole. Sokka's behavior shows what he had grown up with and going to the north pole really shows were he got the idea of gender roles from and what women's role in society is supposed to be compared to men. This island with the Kiyoshi worriors broke Sokka's preconceived notions of gender roles. Part of it being exposed to other cultures and beliefs for the first time instead of surrounded by his small tribe.
Water arrives as a culture puts emphasis on gender roles. In real life, patriarchies are usually formed in harsh environments that favor strong bodies.
See this is where younger generation has been more raised on shorter seasons of 10-12 episodes versus almost 20-25 a season. The girls are learning the old TV watching patience of “it is okay for the world building and plot to take longer.” All of the pay off, all of the patience? The girls will appreciate it.
They think a girl(Katara) helping a boy(Aang) means she's being a pick me lmfao. They won't be the type of people to have patience about world building and appreciate a show like this unless the boys keep pushing them. I'm really glad y'all are watching my absolute favorite show, only suggestion I have (this may take up a lot of time editing but it will be much appreciated) is to have captions for people talking during the video playing because it's really hard to hear both at the same time. Just found out you guys started reacting to ATLA!! Hands down, one of the best western animated shows of all time! For a Nickelodeon kids show, ATLA was so far ahead of its time honestly. So many well written characters and life lessons. Just an overall amazing show with lots of love and care put into it, and one that respects the audience's intelligence. You'll see it! You're in for a ride 😊 And just so you know (some fun facts you can pass along lol), the martial arts of this show are based on various martial arts styles. They even recorded their martial arts consultant (Sifu Kisu) doing moves just so they could give the action and fighting scenes more authenticity. Airbending, to give an example, is based on Ba Gua Zhang, which teaches the practitioner how to move and change direction without pausing or losing momentum, as well as staying behind the opponent's back. The tactics used are outflanking and outmaneuvering. I remember as a kid, watching Aang kicking ass without actually doing so was so badass lol.
One of my favorite things about this show is a tiny little detail: the Avatar theme, because there are two variations. One is heroic and triumphant, the other is terrifying, like you're facing a very, VERY angry god. Because Aang is just a kid who sometimes enters the Avatar State when he's in distress, he can either save you or destroy you on a whim. That's a good OST for ya
[Im aware this has progressed past these episodes] Sokka is the last Warrior is his tribe, and in the water tribe the men were the primary protectors, so it isn't surprising that he had a bit of a misogynistic viewpoint until Suki breaks him down. I appreciate how quickly he adjusts himself.

I think I always liked this show but the first season def is the slower start. I think mostly because it is pretty new right. There is this whole new world, these new nations and you are interested in knowing about, these characters but they kinda go on the long route to reveal what you want to know or learn more about these characters. To some thats a fun journey. To others, they dont want to wait. But once you get to know the loose ends, you get into book 2 and then that's when you go like, ok, now I see what we working with. But you have to start somewhere and book 1 is what sets you up for the rest of the show
What I love about the kiyoshi island episode is that Aang got to ride the Unagi but it wasn’t for fun. This series shows us Aang’s growth with each episode
The Kyoshi Warriors are my favorite fighters in this series. It doesn't hurt that Kyoshi is my favorite Avatar: She's tall, tough, strong, fights with fans even though she's an Earth Bender, and I just love her look.
In terms of reacting to Korra - It's something definitely worth reacting to, the fandom is quite split on it but it's got plenty things it does both way better and worse than ATLA - it's kind of something u have to see for yourself to make up your mind about :) All reactors i've watched have enjoyed it a lot but anyway that's way down the line, can just enjoy this ATLA journey for now EDIT: Korra spoilers in replies just in case :) Edit2: Gek liked this comment and I just learned that if u edit ur comment then u lose the heart welp lmao

He couldn't just be a villain with a good point about inequality that the heroes have to address in some way. Instead, he just had to have a secret evil motivation. Plus Korra just unlocks airbending, the element of freedom, in a moment of passion and desperation instead of actually using the whole philosophy behind it. How much better would it be if through season 1 she did start to figure out how to be more spiritual and calm, and that's how she eventually managed to airbend? Then, after the rest of her elements are taken away, instead of Aang just going "boop doop you can bend again" she actually tries to figure it out herself. Meditating (which she's now learned to do) she can speak to Aang, who talks her though accessing her spirit and spirit bending.

Writers working against time pressures, deadlines, budget, scheduling etc. - theres a million things that can mean we don't get the best version of a story sadly. also sidenote - even after amons reveal, it doesnt suddenly make his motivation evil - he gets more complex showing even he, someone at the top of the food chain, hates the oppression. And he genuinely believes in the cause. The issues he raised were extremely valid but the heroes not addressing it doesn't change him as a villain or change the gravity of his motivation, thats a valid issue with the rushing of the season. plus you could explain korra unlocking airbending as her being at her lowest made her so open to the change, and all the training with tenzin suddenly kicked in at that moment. Because although it wasnt shown much she was constantly going through the airbending practices. But again thats another critique of the show - it left too many gaps and off screen stuff to be filled in by the viewer. regardless i feel like we are both fans of the show but can acknowledge some of its negatives, though a lot of fans are overly harsh for no reason and just blind hating. I barely even think there are negatives, just things that could have been great positives, essentially unused potential. Its a shame because the creators were so talented and really did deliver a great show with some unbelievably great moments and stories despite all the background setbacks. Hopefully the new announced avatar movies and shows can be completed in a better working environment with enough time to deliver what we know they can : ) soz long comment, i try to avoid fandom debate these days so may have blabbered on for a bit here hahah

Hello everyone, Avatar is a masterpiece and I can watch it over and over again!!!!! Seeing your reactions reminds me of the first time I saw it🤗🤗🤗 one of the things I like about the first season It is that despite the fact that Aang is the avatar, we must not forget that at the same time he is still a 12-year-old boy who tries to fulfill his duty, so it is normal that sometimes he has somewhat childish attitudes, but as the series progresses you can see how each one of them is changing... greetings from Argentina🇦🇷and I look forward to your next video.

I'm really glad y'all are watching my absolute favorite show, only suggestion I have (this may take up a lot of time editing but it will be much appreciated) is to have captions for people talking during the video playing because it's really hard to hear both at the same time. There are so many people on screen and talking simultaneously, sometimes I'll have to rewind and figure out who said what. It would also be helpful to add their names with the captions to help those of us who are new :D thanks!

Just found out you guys started reacting to ATLA!! Hands down, one of the best western animated shows of all time! For a Nickelodeon kids show, ATLA was so far ahead of its time honestly. So many well written characters and life lessons. Just an overall amazing show with lots of love and care put into it, and one that respects the audience's intelligence. You'll see it! You're in for a ride 😊
And just so you know (some fun facts you can pass along lol), the martial arts of this show are based on various martial arts styles. They even recorded their martial arts consultant (Sifu Kisu) doing moves just so they could give the action and fighting scenes more authenticity. Airbending, to give an example, is based on Ba Gua Zhang, which teaches the practitioner how to move and change direction without pausing or losing momentum, as well as staying behind the opponent's back. The tactics used are outflanking and outmaneuvering. I remember as a kid, watching Aang kicking ass without actually doing so was so badass lol.
One of my favorite things about this show is a tiny little detail: the Avatar theme, because there are two variations. One is heroic and triumphant, the other is terrifying, like you're facing a very, VERY angry god. Because Aang is just a kid who sometimes enters the Avatar State when he's in distress, he can either save you or destroy you on a whim. That's a good OST for ya
First season is all world building and introducing characters, FYI. Second & third season is typically the fan favorites.

Sokka is the last Warrior is his tribe, and in the water tribe the men were the primary protectors, so it isn't surprising that he had a bit of a misogynistic viewpoint until Suki breaks him down. I appreciate how quickly he adjusts himself.

I think I always liked this show but the first season def is the slower start. I think mostly because it is pretty new right. There is this whole new world, these new nations and you are interested in knowing about, these characters but they kinda go on the long route to reveal what you want to know or learn more about these characters. To some thats a fun journey. To others, they dont want to wait. But once you get to know the loose ends, you get into book 2 and then that's when you go like, ok, now I see what we working with. But you have to start somewhere and book 1 is what sets you up for the rest of the show

In terms of reacting to Korra - It's something definitely worth reacting to, the fandom is quite split on it but it's got plenty things it does both way better and worse than ATLA - it's kind of something u have to see for yourself to make up your mind about :) All reactors i've watched have enjoyed it a lot but anyway that's way down the line, can just enjoy this ATLA journey for now

Yeah Korra isn't as terrible as people say but (IMO) nearly every season is disapointing in the final half. Still a solid 6-7/10 show though.
I'd say Korra at its best is better than Aang, but Aang is better on average

@@tripled2505 My main disappointment with season 1 is the reveal that Amon is secretly a water bender. He couldn't just be a villain with a good point about inequality that the heroes have to address in some way. Instead, he just had to have a secret evil motivation.
Plus Korra just unlocks airbending, the element of freedom, in a moment of passion and desperation instead of actually using the whole philosophy behind it.
How much better would it be if through season 1 she did start to figure out how to be more spiritual and calm, and that's how she eventually managed to airbend? Then, after the rest of her elements are taken away, instead of Aang just going "boop doop you can bend again" she actually tries to figure it out herself. Meditating (which she's now learned to do) she can speak to Aang, who talks her though accessing her spirit and spirit bending.
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 KORRA S1 SPOILERS BELOW: for sure that would have been a much more satisfying storyline to explore, unfortunately you'd need a whole other season of eps to do it justice - with the sag/wga strikes going on right now we should all be mindful of the fact the studio only gave them a one off season initially so they had to wrap it up quickly. Writers working against time pressures, deadlines, budget, scheduling etc. - theres a million things that can mean we don't get the best version of a story sadly.
also sidenote - even after amons reveal, it doesnt suddenly make his motivation evil - he gets more complex showing even he, someone at the top of the food chain, hates the oppression. And he genuinely believes in the cause. The issues he raised were extremely valid but the heroes not addressing it doesn't change him as a villain or change the gravity of his motivation, thats a valid issue with the rushing of the season.
plus you could explain korra unlocking airbending as her being at her lowest made her so open to the change, and all the training with tenzin suddenly kicked in at that moment. Because although it wasnt shown much she was constantly going through the airbending practices. But again thats another critique of the show - it left too many gaps and off screen stuff to be filled in by the viewer.
regardless i feel like we are both fans of the show but can acknowledge some of its negatives, though a lot of fans are overly harsh for no reason and just blind hating. I barely even think there are negatives, just things that could have been great positives, essentially unused potential.
Its a shame because the creators were so talented and really did deliver a great show with some unbelievably great moments and stories despite all the background setbacks. Hopefully the new announced avatar movies and shows can be completed in a better working environment with enough time to deliver what we know they can : ) soz long comment, i try to avoid fandom debate these days so may have blabbered on for a bit here hahah
Season 1 is great, it may seem slow cause the 1st season like any show is always about building the world and getting to know the characters.
