The way they interweave all these characters and plots together is a very economic use of the limited episodes. Like how James Cameron took the first three volumes of the Battle Angel Alita manga and interconnected them into the movie Alita Battle Angel.
I like it and I'm old school ATLA, watched since the beginning, waiting so long between seasons. I was one of those who used to ship Zuko and Katara as Zutara and we used to debate online with fans who shipped Katang. I hated the M. It's crazy how they managed to merge 3 arcs in a way that makes sense, like i thought they would be rushed as hell but they actually are very good in the live action
It helps that they were filler episodes originally, developing characters but story wise they were empty besides tiny bits (Jet is an ass, The Mechanist is a traitor, Uncle gets captured). By taking the key character pieces and blending it into one it rounds out the stories to do away with the blank space.

Personally I really like the changes, it makes the LA it's own thing. If I want a shot for shot I'll just watch the cartoon, it's also on Netflix anyways. 😂 Combining these 3 different episodes/arcs in this way is really cool and they did it in a way that makes sense.
I watched the original cartoon years ago and I only remember some of the story beats, so when I saw this episode I was pretty convinced all of this happened in Omashu. I couldn't really remember how many storylines this was merging. If anything, this was the first episode that felt almost like clockwork.
20:44 Jaby and Achara, don't worry about Katara. I had the same fears, but about episode 6, you'll find that it is an intentional choice to start her (Katara) off a bit timid and small. She builds into the authoritative Katara pretty well. She was stellar in episode 8. It is good casting, just altered character development.
I love LOVE the understated approach the actress chose for katara. it goes so well with her kindness and compassion. it leaves room for her character to build and omg I cannot wait until we get to the southern raiders.
I have high hopes for Katara as she is a local girl. Our entire county is excited about the project. I even know her personal hairdresser who styles her hair for events. So I am hoping that her performance has been a result of the director more than her abilities. It’s also hard because having seen the series about 5 time we know her voice and character so well that any deviation is immediately identifiable.
The whole series is Asia inspired. Fire Nation is China-esque. Kyoshi Islands were Japan. Earth Kingdom is legit India, atleast Omashu is, Bumi is an Indian kid. Bumi literally means earth/land/soil in Hindi like Bhoomi.
Guys, Azula was completely logical and rational when she was first introduced in the cartoon. She wasn't unhinged until the end. This actress does a fantastic job. She even speaks in the cadence of Azula.
20 episodes at 20 minutes each still equates roughly to 8 50 minute episodes. It only seems like it's fast paced because you're used to the cartoon format. They really only removed filler and replaced it with expanded lore.
I haven’t seen the cartoon series. But as someone who is watching this franchise for the first time - I love this show. I find every episode gets better and better. The performances are getting stronger. And I’ve heard it combines a few plot lines into this one episode but I didn’t feel the pacing or story was off or cramped. I found it easy to understand and the stories blended well. I loved when they walked out to save the mechanist and the fire from zuko hit the ground. It feels epic.
I personally think the casting for katara is good - the actress irl is very much like her personality-wise as seen in interviews and she has a lot of knowledge about the show and comics. I think it was an error om the writers' part because they completely wrote out her rage, so the actress had to work with what she got 🤷♀️
I loved this episode, I thought it was very clever how the interconnected all the different episodes into one. I ranked episode 2 the lowest. They assassinated Sukis character by making her simp for Sokka without a good reason. In the animated show she saw him be humble and come ask for her help training after she proved that she could beat him. She gained respect for him, then she spent some time with him, then she showed mild interest before he left. In the live action she immediately is attracted to him because he’s good looking before establishing any connection and it really feels out of place for the bad ass leader of the Kyoshi Warriors
It makes sense to cram together several of the "filler" episodes that are great for character but not much on plot. Each of these bring their own unique things that create a whole
I Think Katara is good. She has stood her ground several times already. However I think her character is still growing to the full passion. She is also new to water bending so its gonna be sloppy.
Because I recently rewatched the original, seeing all these storylines mashed up in Omashu just felt so, so weird. Everything felt out of place and it was hard to accept it. Rewatching the episode now knowing what to expect, it makes way more sense as it's own thing. And just hearing "MY CABBAGES!!!" brings such joy to my heart

It funny how the fans who hold ATLA as a scared cow are so critical and unforgiving to the live action, but when One Piece did it, the fans were so open-minded to the changes made. Book 1 has 20 episodes stuffed into 8 episodes. The early parts of the East Blue Saga has 60 episodes and were crammed into those same 8 episodes. If Ine Piece fans can handle things being changed and different for adaptation purposes, I don't see why ATLA can't seem to do the same.
Well, One Piece fans HAVE to accept more changes because a lot more changes had to be made. Here, it's kind of frustrating to see they change some things because they didn't need to.
The Live Action is not protraying Zuko as bad but just misguided which means we need an actual bad guy. So they give us more of Dad and sister. We could get more of Zhao but no one wants more of Zhao.
I honestly liked that and I think it sets him up for his redemption a little smoother. This version made him seem so much more his character's age than the animated version. I think it makes sense for him to be more confused early on because the trauma of his agni Kai and banishment is still something he's working through.
@Eh......... Zuko isn't just a regular teenager though. He's a 16 year old kid who's whole life was turned upside down because he "dared" to show compassion for human life, after struggling up until that point competing for his father's love and respect and losing it to his psychopath prodegy sister, losing his mother in the middle of night with no warning, etc. Then he gets banished from the only home he's ever known, sent off to do something impossible with the empty promise that he could come home someday. He had to grow up so fast and he's always been morally conflicted. He saw at a very early age how ruthless his own nation could be, to even it's own citizens. He's always questioned things and is UNDERSTANDABLY very upset about it all. Combined with him being, again, 16 which is already a tough time in life. Idk what you have against teenagers lmao but having been one myself I can say that the experience was just as nuanced as any other age group. 🤷🏾♀️ I think it makes perfect sense to show him at this stage more visibly confused. I also don't think they took away any of his spark/rage. He was pissed the whole time lol
The only character I’m concerned about so far is Azula I’ve stopped after this episode because I don’t want to binge it all in one weekend. Maybe I’ll hate her more and find her to be insane and unhinged and scary enough later but right now she looks like a cute little girl.
I love the series it comes with the true emotions of children learning to work through trauma. I expected Katara to act motherly due to the way she lost her mother and Zuko fatherly because needs to prove to his father he can be a leader. I love the fact that they are growing into their characters. Also, don't forget Daniel Dae Kim plays in the Hawaii 5-0 series.
in the animation, Azula seemed to come out of nowhere - she was already kind of crazed - here we are getting a backstory to help make her believable in the real world and hopefully by the time we reach the point we were introduced to her in the original she will be the crazy Azula we all came to love.
Everything is working so well, especially Sokka and Zuko's performances, there are some flaws, but the series is a solid adaptation so far, but Katara's performance is very uninspiring and monotone, it's sadly concerning.
I don’t blame the actress for her poor portrayal of Kitara I blame the producers for holding this actress back and hindering her true potential of how she is truly capable of playing Kitara in this Live Action Series it’s criminal.
I'm glad we have the same opinion on Katara. Of all the casts, she is the one I find the most lacking. Especially when she waterbends, especially when she was just learning , I need to feel tension. Also when her life is in danger or when she's fighting Zuko, I don't feel danger from her.
they already sped up her water bending it took her forever on the show to be able to even do Basic fighting she was just annoying enemies in the early episode.
I don’t like that the son and father are in Omashu. Because it makes King Boomy look like an idiot that he doesn’t know that people are making weapons for the Fire Nation under his nose in his own city. I wish they would’ve visit the Eastern Air Temple first and then Omashu.
The issue of Katara isn’t the actress, it’s the script and direction, they are not letting her really be fierce, they are making her soft spoken. The actress can actually deliver the fierce energy, but for some reason the show is not giving her the lines and the direction to do so. Hell, they even removed the scene in the first episode of her getting pissed at Sokka and being so angry enough to summon energy to break Aang out of the ice. The writing for Katara is deliberately too soft and taking away a lot of her firm assertive nature, this is totally not the actress’ problem. They are not directing her properly.
it's funny to see reacters give notes on acting as if there was any chance the actors would improve their performance in later episodes. umm, the show's already in the can. 😄
this episode really is crammed full jet the mechanist and I just realized the great divide with siblings taking sides of two different camps. not a bad episode really
As someone that never watched a single episode of the Avatar, the pacing and story is alright. It feels rushed from jumping from one location to another and introducing and dropping characters constantly, but it's not to the point of confusion. And with the actors and casting, nothing stands out as horrible. If they have different personalities, there's no way of knowing. So to recap, it's a beautiful show with a strange mix of adult and child themes, and to compare to other mediums is an apple to oranges comparison that can never equal out.
The show is hitting it for me so far. If they're able to keep this up I will definitely be looking forward to Season 2, but there's still a ways to go before the end of this season. I don't have any prior knowledge from the show so I don't know what's supposed to happen so I can completely have fun with what they are giving me. If this show does its job right it will make me want to watch the animated series. So far it's doing just that. Zuko's sister once she revealed herself I instantly didn't like her. She seemed like one of those "Mean Girl" types and I dislike people that have a bully or A-hole personality. I'm not that fond of Zuko's character, but I dislike him way less than her and she is going to be a problem. There's almost always a better way to deal with a situation and Jet had time to come up with something that wouldn't put innocent lives in jeopardy. I hope he becomes better than that in future episodes. Not everyone handles loss the same, but it doesn't mean you stop trying to be better than those that wronged you at least a little. That fight with Aang and Zuko was nice and I hope to see another fight with them again. The Cabbage Man was interesting, but I feel like I'm missing something about why he's so liked. Maybe they will show more scenes with him in the next episode. Although I'm enjoying the main hero characters and their allies right now my favorite character is Uncle Iroh he is the person that I'd be wanting to have as an ally and mentor in this world. He's the only character that hasn't done anything questionable in the show. At least that I can remember with any other characters. Enjoyed the reaction 👍👍✌ out.
I’ve noticed a lot of people getting upset/confused by storylines being meshed together… there are only 8 episodes what did you think was going to happen? If you want to watch the original it’s still available, but this is clearly a very different show.
The bending in this is considerably better than the live action film, but it still feels a little slow & stiff imo. I know powers are much easier to do in animation (i.e. ATLA, Marvel, DC, LoVM, etc), so it's a bit of an unfair comparison, but it's hard not to compare it to the animated show tbh.
I understand the criticism because you’re comparing. But for someone who doesn’t remember too much of the animated series, I don’t care for Sakka’s acting. You’re asking for more energy but I think they’re trying to be less over the top. I like this a lot.
I don’t know if it’s fair to say that it doesn’t come near the brilliance of the cartoon after only three episodes. Granted I am just beginning my watch of the animated show but you’re basing an opinion of 61 episodes and love of nostalgia of almost 20 years on something you’ve seen of three hours of something new.
They mashed up a lot of episodes in one and I assume its budget or plot-wise. The effects looks good but i feel iffy about some of the dialogue. Im not complaining i love it so far, its better than the first one, but I guess it would have cost a lot more money to do more locations and add more episodes. I don't like the changes they made to the story so far( story wise).
The one thing that bugs me is...except firebenders, for other type of benders they jst manipulate nd bend the already present element for eg....water benders use water near them, airbenders use air around them nd earthbenders use the earth around them for bending but the firebenders alone jst spawn the fire out of thin air😂 I am still scratching my head unable to find logical reasoning behind it😅😅

The instant I saw the flamel symbol in the mechanist work shop where Sokka had the magnifying glass I thought of Full Metal Alchemist.
Oh shit we get the mechanist jet and Azula oh man!!!!
Ive never seen the animated movie and I really love this show.
MY CABBAGES!!!
I'm glad we have the same opinion on Katara. Of all the casts, she is the one I find the most lacking. Especially when she waterbends, especially when she was just learning , I need to feel tension. Also when her life is in danger or when she's fighting Zuko, I don't feel danger from her.
I agree with the Katars thing. In the cartoon she is the mom. But here she is more the little sister.
I feel like zuko not being there would have made it better and look less messy but it does work somewhat considering 8 episode limit
Am not sure where you have kept your "expectations", somehow it keeps coming back 😅
I really liked Azula, she immediately felt like Azula to me.
Yeah, I love Azula she’s perfect in character
I think for the live action series They are building Katara up to have more confidence and get that power I believe that is what is going on.
they already sped up her water bending it took her forever on the show to be able to even do Basic fighting she was just annoying enemies in the early episode.
Oh no to Katara
I’ve never seen the cartoon and I’m loving the series
Achara looks a lot like Mai (Thalia Tran)
this episode really is crammed full jet the mechanist and I just realized the great divide with siblings taking sides of two different camps. not a bad episode really
I never watched the cartoon but I'm really enjoying the new series on Netflix it's a lot of fun!
That one moment quickly showed how much stronger Iroh is than Zuko.
Lowkey achara looks like an elder sister to asula and her gang 😅
Don't worry baby, Jet will wipe out that nasty town for you
Maybe Jaby can voice Appa next season? Or season 3? o.O
I have watched the cast interviews, the problem is definitely not casting . That girl is katara in real life , the issue is writing .
What did they do to bumi?! Why so much spoon-feeding? Literally everything.
That's what I was wondering. Bumi's deal was all about making sure you figured his riddles out yourself.
They massacred my boy😢
Oh no and oh no to Katara
I understand the criticism because you’re comparing. But for someone who doesn’t remember too much of the animated series, I don’t care for Sakka’s acting. You’re asking for more energy but I think they’re trying to be less over the top. I like this a lot.
I don’t know if it’s fair to say that it doesn’t come near the brilliance of the cartoon after only three episodes. Granted I am just beginning my watch of the animated show but you’re basing an opinion of 61 episodes and love of nostalgia of almost 20 years on something you’ve seen of three hours of something new.
I really liked katara actually. Maybe its just that i think ahe looks really the part and i have not seen the show in a LONG time
Did anyone recognize Danny Pudi (Abed from Community)?
THANKS, folks!!! I'm trying to take my time with this *great* series, but y'all UA-camrs won't let me :)
Damn azula shows up early as shit
They mashed up a lot of episodes in one and I assume its budget or plot-wise. The effects looks good but i feel iffy about some of the dialogue. Im not complaining i love it so far, its better than the first one, but I guess it would have cost a lot more money to do more locations and add more episodes. I don't like the changes they made to the story so far( story wise).
Wait you mean to tell me that the people of the fire nation never saw their princess before?
0:50 jaby traumatized
Honestly I didn't like the casting of fire nation kids Zuko, azula and her friends 😂
I actually really liked Katara in this episode. And I haven’t as much.
The one thing that bugs me is...except firebenders, for other type of benders they jst manipulate nd bend the already present element for eg....water benders use water near them, airbenders use air around them nd earthbenders use the earth around them for bending but the firebenders alone jst spawn the fire out of thin air😂 I am still scratching my head unable to find logical reasoning behind it😅😅
THE ZUTARA SCENE
NOT MY CABBAGE CORP!
One Piece Live Action had 45 Episodes of Anime while Avatar Live Action had 20 Episodes of Book 1🤔
oh, my cabbages!
5:38 Aye!!!!! 😂💪
