In the documentary, they explain that the pilot had to be really kid-friendly because Nickelodeon premiered the pilot to a child test audience and if they didn’t receive it well, the show would’ve been canceled/delayed.
As someone who grew up with the show, the way I saw the first two episodes has really evolved. They went from being lighthearted fun, to me seeing them as childish, then to me realizing they were actually horrifying. Sokka as what, a fifteen year old? The spector of that warship constantly on their horizon, the perpetual fear of invasion. This show introduces some pretty heavy themes, right out of the gate.
Book 1 is kinda slow to get into, but i think Books 2 and 3 have some of the best written episodes of all time, especially for a nick show, the character development is incredible and the overall story is near perfection, and being a mid 2000s show it holds up very well

Fun fact since you mentioned the patriot, the creators modelled Commander Zhao after Jason Issac's character in the patriot and were very excited when he was able to voice their character. Alson in case your friend didn't know or mention it to you already, all the different bending styles are modelled after different martial arts and they had a martial arts master to help them choreograph the fights and the animators even had to attend some martial arts classes themselves so that they could get a good feel on how to animate the fights fluidly.
I fell down a hole of watching reactions of Avatar The Last Airbender and Harry Potter about 2 weeks ago, found you guys through your Harry Potter reactions and now you start this masterpiece? Holy Moly... This is THE best show ever made.
I love how ~ready, willing, and able~ this channel is to branching out and watching things that you never would have considered on your own. I joined the Avatar fandom very late and binged this show while I was pregnant with my first son (who is now about to turn 10) and when he was around 8 we watched this whole show together ❤ so glad to be apart of this journey with my favorite band of big brothers! 🌬️
My husband and I first watched this after college, and when our daughter was about 4 we shared it with her. She's 6 now and it inspired her to take Kung Fu. We both started Hung Gar style this fall (the style that earthbending was modeled after)!
OMG when I saw you guys were doing this show I literally wanted to cry. I love Avatar so much, it's so nostalgic and I'm so happy ya'll are gonna go on this journey. 😭❤ Hope you enjoy it!
I LOVE that you guys are starting this journey. It's one of the most consistently good series I've ever seen. Even the worst episodes are fun to watch. And this is one of those rare series that knew where it was going from beginning to end. So there really isn't any wasted space. Excellent world building, excellent storytelling, excellent characters. If you're already digging it now, you're gonna LOVE it later.
Be careful of spoilers in the comments. This show is so good you can't help talk about it. If there's something you don't understand, chances are the show will explain it for you, but hopefully we can keep you guys on the same page without affecting your viewing of the show. Of course, Answer is there to talk about it, too, so I think you guys are in good hands. The fan base is super chill too.
So glad you are doing this series! It does take a couple episodes or maybe even a season to get invested in but Zuko's character arc alone is worth it. The fight scenes between the benders get really good too. I've rewatched this series maybe 3 or 4 times through.
rewatching your reactions to this is so funny cuz oak goes from "i might not have watched this if i saw this on my own" at the end of ep 1 to "if it wasn't for you guys i would be binging this right now" at the beginning of ep 2 😭😭
Love how the Appleton Oak described the first episode as being kind of like opening chapter of a book. I know there are people who don't like the first couple of episodes as much because they're a bit slow-paced, but for me it's kind of like when I read the first few chapters in The Lord of The Rings that take place in Hobbiton. The plot itself doesn't move along very fast at first, but that gives you time to get to know the world and the characters inhabiting it better. A lot of people forget how important character and world building is, but laying out the setting of the world itself is what informs how immersed you are, and solid characters are needed to keep you invested. Spending the first episodes just laying those things out really builds up a great foundation for the series going forward.
I’m happy you’ve been enjoying it so far! This is one of those shows you’ll rewatch after watching it to the end! And i can’t wait for you to learn more about Katara and her brother
one of the little details I really liked in ep 4, is that the movement katara uses to pull the water from aangs lungs is the same movement we see her practicing earlier in the town. it's a small thing that they didnt have to include, but it's nice to see her powers growing through practice.
I just came here to say that Captain Zhao is voiced by Jason Isaacs who plays Lucius Malfoy! Thank you for watching this, the Oak will definitely love this lol
Just found you channel because of ATLA, can't wait to rewatch it with you guys and check out your other reactions! I started watching this when it first came out, I was about Aang's age and though I caught things as a Kid once I rewatched it as an adult I really appreciated it's messages.💜 Edit: The benders of each nation use fighting moves that are based on real Martial art styles. I think you guys would enjoy watching the videos of the Martial arts expert breaking down the different styles and why they chose those specific art styles for each element.
I LOVE this show. I typically look up new reactions to the show every few months. I don't know how many times I've watched other people watch it by now. It's ridiculous. I didn't expect you guys to ever watch this, so I'm thrilled. I called out sick today and this was just what I needed.
Very excited for you guys to go on this journey! You’ll soon find out it isn’t just a kid show ! It has the best life lessons and the craziest adventure you could ever watch unfold, this show is the definition of character developments. I’ll be here with you guys every step of the way!!!!! I am SO HAPPY you guys decided to do this series!!! I can’t ever get enough of this show and I’m sure you all will love and appreciate it for all that it is
I'm so glad we're watching this with someone on the bench who watched it before. A lot of times when people reaction for the first time they misunderstand some things so I'm happy we have someone who can explain it. Excited for this series guys!
I'M SO EXCITED! This show as a whole in my opinion is one of the closest things to perfection and you're gonna be in for some heavy lesson drops so I really look forward to all the discussions!
I really hope you guys keep this up because the show really picks up and the animation even revises itself! I'm glad y'all are going into this thinking of the big picture, because although the beginning of ATLA is more kid-friendly and kid-paced, the show shows it's vibrant colors and deep storytelling later on as well as demonstrating its roots in it's lightheartedness and fun. I also can't wait for y'all to experience the character developments that occur! It's my favorite show of all time and I'm glad I get to watch and hear y'all perspective on it!
OH MY GOD NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY!!! I was already a huge fan of your channel before this. NOW?! I think this has convinced me to get the patreon, you guys watch ONLY bangers. If you can’t tell this is STILL one of my favorite shows ever and I’m 23 years old. You guys will love it, I can’t wait to watch it again with y’all.
Something a lot of people may not realize, is that focusing on the balance of his foe is something Zuko might have realized after fighting Aang for the first time; as controlling your opponent's balance is a key part of airbending technique.
Really amazing that you are reacting to Avatar and already like it so much. The show might start out child-like but just like Harry Potter matures over time and only gets better, really a story-telling masterpiece. The Avatar Cycle is based on the actual seasons: Water/Winter to Earth/Spring to Fire/Summer to Air/Fall. This gives the natural order in which an Avatar should learn the elements.
I love Avatar! I started watching this when I was in my early 20s with my 4 year old nephew and he and I kept on arguing about who the best character was. Hehehe
I've seen Avatar all the way through multiple times, it's become a bit of a comfort show for me. I recently introduced one of my kids to it a few months back. After the first couple episodes he said he liked Sokka and asked who my fav character in the show is. I said 'Zuko' he says 'the bad guy??' I told him to wait. Further into the story I ask who his favorite is now and he says '.........*sigh* Zuko.'
I love that y'all are doing this series! It's amazing and I know that you'll enjoy the story! With that said, Captain Zhao isn't Zuko's "bad uncle." They're not related at all. Iroh (the older gentleman with gray hair) is Zuko's only uncle
i was not expecting this, but like other people have already said, i'm PUMPED!! this show flew under my radar for some reason when i was younger, but even watching it now as an adult, it's so good
This is gonna be so good! Yep the beginning starts out my “kiddish” but as the show continues it just gets better and better. Season two is where it REALLY hits it off But I’ve got someone like my dad who sees an animated “kids” show and automatically assumes it’s gonna be bad and not worth watching as an adult, so it’s nice to see you guys being open about this. I know you will love it more as it goes on and you’re gonna love specific characters ;)
I still remember watching the first episode on TV as a kid and hearing a main female character call out a boy for being ‘sexist’ - just straight up calling him on it! No one did that in TV - for kids or otherwise - that I was watching at the time. Hell, no one even did it at school, we just constantly saw people letting boys get away with it. This is always such an interesting memory for me when I rewatch the series. Episode one, the creators knew what they wanted to do - we’re going to make a cool show for everyone and you better LISTEN 💪
The arrow tattoos are a symbol of achieving Master status. Aang earned his airbending tattoos and the status of an airbending master by the time he was 12, for exhibiting impressive talent with his native element (and with his invention of the air scooter), making him the youngest airbending master in Air Nomad history.
Foaming mouth guy was a brilliant way to hide the other Kyoshi townsfolk cheering on loop, our attention is brought to him instead lol, and we love him for it
Well, here it is. I started watching this channel when the Harry Potter series dropped and considered getting patreon for the full reactions... Now this just sealed the deal for me. Thanks for watching one of my all time favorite series and I can't wait to see how much everyone (especially Oak) loves it.

yess!! I'm so excited to see you guys watch this show, it holds such fond memories for me growing up. I remember sitting down with my siblings for every new episode premiere, laughing, crying, and being fully invested in each of these characters and their stories!
OMG!!!!!! My Badd Medicine guys watching my favourite cartoon show!!!! Trust your audience, this is one of the best shows I've ever seen. It does start a bit more childish but gets serious pretty soon. This is like wine. It just gets better and better every season...
This show has one of the best storylines/plots I’ve ever seen! All of its messages from genocide and war to unity and peace, the development is just amazing. Not to mention including topics like misogyny, child abuse, disability, and sacrifice. On the surface this is a kids show but that’s really only because the main characters are children, everything else is so intense! When I watching this series on tv as a kid a lot of the messages went over my head because I didn’t understand. But when I rewatched as an older teen I saw how sad and amazing this story was. I’m really happy to see you all reacting to this and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
My excitement cannot be understated at how excited i am for you guys to see the later episode's... The unbelievable amount of development these characters go under over these 61 episode's, some of which you will genuinely surprise you... Some moments in this show still make me cry... Years later now, i love this show..

Edit: Btw loved it guys, I grew up watching this eventhough it came out before I was born, but it gets a lot better and there is a lot of character building over the next two seasons and there is a movie coming out in 2025.
PS don't watch the live action adaptation it's just painful.
At this point it's a tradition for reaction channels to watch the live action after they finished the show so I would they definitely have to watch it.
What a queen 😌
Dont even start to spoil stuff
@@AbuHajarAlBugatti
It's not spoilers. Those things are not in the show and they are not going to read the comics and the novels so for them it's just some plus lore that they wouldn't know otherwise.
@@az639 it is definitely implied in the show and anyway you mention something about a character not even mentioned so far. Just wait until this character is mentioned and then you can do you fun facts. I would appreciate it atleast If I viewed it first time
holy shittt no way you are doing this show! 😳
you may think I'm overreacting when I say that now but this is really one of the best shows I've ever watched.. the world building and how the characters are written is beyond perfection .. man I remember when I was a kid Nickelodeon would air these whole weekend Avatar The Last Airbender marathons and me and my parents spent the whole day bingeing the show 😌🙏🏼 haha everyone was so addicted.
Prepare yourself for something you'll truly love❤
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Your not overreacting I had the same reaction LOL I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who grew up watching this show I love it so much even when I was a kid.
@@Alex-tx2je right? It’s just so good. The first time rewatching it when I was older was l was just as blown away as I was as a kid first time watching the show
Fun fact since you mentioned the patriot, the creators modelled Commander Zhao after Jason Issac's character in the patriot and were very excited when he was able to voice their character. Alson in case your friend didn't know or mention it to you already, all the different bending styles are modelled after different martial arts and they had a martial arts master to help them choreograph the fights and the animators even had to attend some martial arts classes themselves so that they could get a good feel on how to animate the fights fluidly.
If Oak’s favorite character isn’t Zuko by the end of the series. I’ll be devastated. His character development is INCREDIBLE.
Rewatching this and I was struck by oak saying @49:15 “it’s not something I’m gonna be super crazy passionate about”. Famous last words lmfao 🤣
I fell down a hole of watching reactions of Avatar The Last Airbender and Harry Potter about 2 weeks ago, found you guys through your Harry Potter reactions and now you start this masterpiece? Holy Moly... This is THE best show ever made.
This Channel is one of the best recommendations UA-cam has ever made to me. You guys are guys are awesome.
Cheers!
@@alharairah2214 that’s so lovely 🥰
Oak is gonna love this so much ! This show shaped an entire generation . The LESSONS in it !! Thanks guys ,this is gonna be an emotional ride !
OMG when I saw you guys were doing this show I literally wanted to cry. I love Avatar so much, it's so nostalgic and I'm so happy ya'll are gonna go on this journey. 😭❤ Hope you enjoy it!
This is in my top 5 of the best series I've ever watched, animated or not. The whole story is so well thought out it's crazy
4:38
"I DON'T NEED ANY CALMING TEA!"
That scene with Zuko's tone of voice and the gong in the background kills me every time 😆
I LOVE that you guys are starting this journey.
I love that you guys are reacting to this. Watched this show growing up and LOVED it. Beautifully written show that i can rewatch over and over
rewatching your reactions to this is so funny cuz oak goes from "i might not have watched this if i saw this on my own" at the end of ep 1 to "if it wasn't for you guys i would be binging this right now" at the beginning of ep 2 😭😭
"I treated you like a girl when I should have treated you like a warrior"
"I am a warrior. But I'm a girl too"
I love this line! One of my faves
I showed ATLA to my husband a few months ago and it’s one of his favorite shows ever now❤
I just came here to say that Captain Zhao is voiced by Jason Isaacs who plays Lucius Malfoy! Thank you for watching this, the Oak will definitely love this lol
Holy shit YES. I'm excited to see your reaction to my favorite show of all time!
Just found you channel because of ATLA, can't wait to rewatch it with you guys and check out your other reactions! I started watching this when it first came out, I was about Aang's age and though I caught things as a Kid once I rewatched it as an adult I really appreciated it's messages.💜
Edit: The benders of each nation use fighting moves that are based on real Martial art styles. I think you guys would enjoy watching the videos of the Martial arts expert breaking down the different styles and why they chose those specific art styles for each element.
Thank you and glad you gave us a chance! Keep the tidbits coming 😁
Excited !!!!!!!
"This isn't a kid's show" is like the catchphrase for all ATLA blind reactors lol
I’m glad I watched this show as an adult, I wouldn’t have nearly appreciated it as a child as I do now. So excited for your journey!!
I am SO HAPPY you guys decided to do this series!!! I can’t ever get enough of this show and I’m sure you all will love and appreciate it for all that it is
This show is absolutely timeless!
I love how the Answer just stares at them during the episodes to see how they'll react..
I enjoy seeing you guys go into this journey so open minded. This show definitely gets more mature as the show progresses
"Uncle's got some skills there"
That's one way to describe Iroh :D
"Since we started the channel, I just haven't had any time to watch anything outside of what we do here for you guys."
Me: That's rough, buddy.
I'm never gonna get tired of all the "Titanic door" jabs. 😂 Keep 'em coming
OH MY GOD MY FAVOURITE SHOW!!! I CANT BELIEVE IT 🤯
On the series being "Bingeworthy"... I introduced a friend to the series once via a full marathon of the entire series. It was GLORIOUS!
'This is a kid's show'
episode 3: genocide 💃
Season two is where it REALLY hits it off
But I’ve got someone like my dad who sees an animated “kids” show and automatically assumes it’s gonna be bad and not worth watching as an adult, so it’s nice to see you guys being open about this. I know you will love it more as it goes on and you’re gonna love specific characters ;)
You guys keep picking all my childhood faves 😭 LOTR, HP and now ATLA...I can't take it!!
Foaming mouth guy was a brilliant way to hide the other Kyoshi townsfolk cheering on loop, our attention is brought to him instead lol, and we love him for it
Commenting again to add that I am absolutely loving the unbridled joy on The Answer's face rewatching this. This show does that to ya.
49:12 saving this for later when you’re invested trust it’ll happen and you’ll never notice the shift
Well, here it is. I started watching this channel when the Harry Potter series dropped and considered getting patreon for the full reactions... Now this just sealed the deal for me. Thanks for watching one of my all time favorite series and I can't wait to see how much everyone (especially Oak) loves it.
"just a good kick back show, no cliffhanger anxiety, no anger at the show, no drama" this show is gonna get yall on the edge of your seats
This alert just improved an otherwise shitty day by 1000% I’m so excited for this- you guys will love it ❤
I've been binging your movie reactions because I just love how invested you are in everything you watch. And I've only now discovered this. One of my favorite shows of all time yooo I'M SO PUMPEDDD
I watched this for the first time when I was already in my mid twenties (in 2020) and it seriously transcends age, it’s just perfect. It’s my absolute favorite piece of media I’ve ever watched. Seriously cannot wait for this journey you’re about to embark on!
Still love this show in my 30's. I rewatch it every few years.
I first watched it as an adult too. It took me until episode 6 to *really* get into it, but now I'm a huge fan, this show is amazing!
My wife made me watch these about 3 years ago. I'm glad she did. So good. Prince Zuko is voiced by none other than... RUFIO! RUFIO! RU-FEE-OOOOOOOOO!
yess!! I'm so excited to see you guys watch this show, it holds such fond memories for me growing up. I remember sitting down with my siblings for every new episode premiere, laughing, crying, and being fully invested in each of these characters and their stories!
YOURE KIDDING!!! IVE LITERALLY BEEN BINGING AVATAR REACTIONS AND YOUR REACTIONS AND NOW YOU GIVE ME THIS??? INCREDIBLE
OMG! This is one of my favorite shows ever!!! I'm so happy you guys are doing this! You should also try to watch arcane after.
Definitely in the plans!
@@BaddMedicine Cool!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. Best kids show of all time. One of the few you appreciate more when you're an adult.
Dude...the fan base for ATLA is deep and serious. Great to see you doing this series.
OMG!!!!!! My Badd Medicine guys watching my favourite cartoon show!!!! Trust your audience, this is one of the best shows I've ever seen. It does start a bit more childish but gets serious pretty soon. This is like wine. It just gets better and better every season...
Oh my god. I immediately had to click this video! I can’t wait for this series and to see you guys experience this show for the first time!
This is hands down on of the best animated series of all time!
My excitement cannot be understated at how excited i am for you guys to see the later episode's... The unbelievable amount of development these characters go under over these 61 episode's, some of which you will genuinely surprise you... Some moments in this show still make me cry... Years later now, i love this show..
I LITERALLY JUST SEARCHED FOR THIS VIDEO AND YOU POSTED 30 SECONDS AGO AAAAAA
Omg samee
Hope you enjoy!
this show was a HUGE part of my childhood and for a "kids" show its got so many different heavy topics. i didnt realize as much as kid but rewatching it as an adult. this show really was ahead of its time.
Oh I can’t wait!!! (Haven’t even watched the reaction yet, I’m just so excited that I had to comment 😂) I am 33 years old and I can honestly say this is my favorite TV series of all time. Like others have probably mentioned, it starts out leaning more heavily into the “kids show” aspect, but once the show hits its stride, it is AMAZING. Especially the last season. It’s an absolute masterpiece and I can’t wait to see you guys experience this crazy ride!
I’m SO SO SO EXCITED YOU GUYS ARE WATCHING AVATAR. You’re going to LOVE IT.
That’s great news I’ll enjoy watching your reactions to this show it’s a great series 👍
As soon as I saw this on my UA-cam page I yelled YESSS at the gym while I’m doing stationary bike. So glad you guys are doing this! You bring me great joy throughout my day!!
Am I about to watch 10+ hours of 3 grown men reviewing a kids show? YOU BET YOUR ASS I AM. BEST ANIMATED SHOW OF ALL TIME.
i am so glad youre watching this .. i started watching in my late teen and still would go back to binge on netflix now in my 30s .. the story is one of a kind and heartwarming and such a comforting watch to come back to during hard days ..
