Right on, Slash' s guitar is spiritual.!! Not just his solos, the entire songs. Being a guitar player myself...I was just totally blown away just watching him plain go off on that thing for 2 straight hours ... non stop when I saw them live.
Slash' guitar work on Guns and Roses albums is phenomenal he has a great ear for melody his choice of notes is just on point there's a lot of players that came after guns that are influenced in some way by him, he's definitely my number one player show me a player that's wrote as many solos that are so recogniseable
Shannon Hoon is the vocals that makes this song. He passed away in '95 and his band "Blind Melon" changed my life. Every song on the first album is full of deep lyrics.
Like Shannon. Or liked. Very sad. But he most Definitely didn’t MAKE this song. 😂. I get he changed your life….which is why music is so great. Give props to Axl for even having him on the song. It would have been a big hit no matter who sang background. Axl Made Shannon. Both from same town, along w/Izzy. Shannon has been missed tho!!!
The high pitched voice that’s harmonizing with Axl is actually the voice of Shannon Hoon from the band Blind Melon. Axl knew Shannon from their home town in Indiana, and Shannon had a beautiful voice. Unfortunately Shannon, like a lot of his contemporaries, died of a drug overdose. I would highly recommend reacting to some blind melon songs as they are a unique band from the 90s that do not get enough credit. My personal favorites of theirs are “Dear O’l dad” and “tones of home”. Shannon had a really unique and soulful voice, and the duel guitar work in Blind Melon is really beautiful.
The orgin of this song goes back to 1985. Izzy Stradlin ( the bands rythm guitarist and song writer) was dating a girl Axl had a big crush on. When Izzy and the girl broke up, Axl tried to date her. Later that night Axl and Izzy wrote the song in 5 minutes and became the first official song of the new and legendary line up for Guns N' Roses, recorded in 1985. Slash is very underrated even with the recognition he gets,he is fully capable of ear shredding solos and crazy riffs but he serves the music,he writes solos that advance the song and deepen the story, almost dramatising them which makes you just get swallowed by the song,he's an incredible guitarist and incredibly creative with his writing,he doesn't sound like any other lead guitarist because of this 👍🏻 he's my favourite lead guitarist of all time, you can tell he takes a lot of care and thought into writing these solos, even his lead guitar riffs stay very very close to the core of the song, guns and roses strength came from the fact that every single member of the band was immensely talented at what they do,duff was the same on bass where he stayed very true to the music and stayed within the boundaries of the song,Matt sorum on use your illusion 1+2 is one of the best drum performances ever because if you listen his drum lines stay very close to the guitars or the bass,it's phenomenal song writing across the board . . . Greatest rock band in history in my opinion
Guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Gus G, etc etc etc. Would blow Slash outta the water, technically speaking. NO doubt. What makes Slash GREAT in my eyes however, is when he plays. You can FEEL IT in your soul. He conveys so MUCH emotion in his playing. Tough thing to do. Being a teen myself in the 80's, I heard the stories of Slash being so drunk(or maybe high) at concerts, he could barely stand. BUT, he NEVER missed a chord. Even while throwing up. Now THAT is talent! LOL. GREAT reaction. Keep it up Brad & Lex! \m/
I love GNR. Had most of their albums on cassette but listening to this track now, the first half of the song sounds like a rock and roll boy band. When this came out though there weren't many boy bands.

That's not Axl layered, he's singing with Shannon Hoon of Blind Mellon. Believe it or not it's one of the first songs they ever wrote as a band. Before Appetite for destruction.
I remember hearing this on the radio when it first came out and thought the lyrics were "cause we're having a ball here, baby", not "cause there's heaven above you, baby"
Lex knows slash play rather than being super technical with fancy licks, has more of a feel style, very melodic, with notes that evoke emotion from the heart instead of wonder the mind. He reminds me of David Gilmore, or Santana, very feel like with tasty melodies.
Guys watch don't cry alt lyrics live from prague, there's a clip around youtube with about 1:30 minutes that shows Axl's talent live. It's a rare performance of the alternative lyrics to this song
The song lyrics came from a episode in Axl's life. He'd had a crush on a woman that Izzy, the other guitarist had dated for a while and she became single so Axl asked if she'd be with him; She turned him down and he started to cry and she said "Don't cry" and that is the basis of the song's lyrics and feel.
Lex, I noticed back then that GnR was one of the bands that incorporated a lot of duel vocals singing one octave above the other simultaneously to give that layered sound. Axel did that a lot.
The albums followed a story, along with the videos. It was a long progression that not many kept up with. There was this myth back in the day that there was a tragic romance in the music. Which played out in real life.
You gotta do "Used to Love Her", Slash has two acoustic solos for Lex and Brad will def get a kick out of the lyrics. Nightrain also is just a badass tune!
