Before my Core2Duo Mac Mini died (or the PSU did) it was already unusable for UA-cam and Netflix because it neither had the CPU power or hardware acceleration to decode the video. It was great for running emulators, as a music only media centre and I half made some music on it with Pro Tools LE and Reason but even with 8GB, an SSD boot drive and an external 7200rpm FireWire drive, it wasn’t very usable with later OS versions. Especially as I couldn’t even use Pro Tools LE anymore or the Mbox2 it came with using the last OS it supported. It felt super fast at first when I’d had a G3 Desktop and Dual 800Mhz Quicksilver G4 before it though. A guitarist friend uses a 2009 MacBook Pro with 8GB and an SSD boot drive with GarageBand to record entire songs including mastering using only an USB interface, his looper and outboard effects so depending on your needs, they’re still useful systems.
I have 15-inch MacBook Pro Late 2006 and I upgraded to 4GB of RAM(But it can use 3.5GB because of the chipset) and installed a SSD. With Core 2 Duo T7500 processor, Windows 11 is slow but working!
Very nice. Honestly not bad for a machine of this age. I remember back then it was claimed the MacBook Pro was the best Windows laptop on sale at the time, especially for Vista.
I have the same 15.4. MacBook Pro 2006 A1150 the os stuck at 10.5 and so unfunctionable so i install windows 7 works well but some hardware not function due lack of drivers support and plugging usb stuff solve that issues like audio,webcam and Bluetooth while graphics,wifi works fine
You need to use a leopard or snow leopard dvd and install the bootcamp software.
It can run on Sorbet Leopard Patcher since it was the least supportive for this kind of version and it uses the Windows Vista 32-bit system in it..

This particular eta of MacBook Pro’s are definitely the most unique, all be it troubled models that exist. Many of them have the common GPU problems specific MacBook Pro’s suffer from, but if you take care of them, they can survive. I actually have a 2008 unit that’s still running without any GPU issues somehow.
There was a repair program for the faulty Nvidia 8600M GT and the new revisions of those GPUs was actually decently reliable if you only use it for desktop work and not gaming 24/7. It was also supported for a really long time granted you fitted a proper SSD and 4-6GB of RAM.
This 2006 model is also decently reliable, with it's ATI X1600 graphics, which was sadly supported for a relatively short time due to it's older architecture.

If you fancy a full teardown you could find out by looking at the bare die of the chip. Revision A3 is what was installed on the new logic boards. But honestly, it it works, leave it alone. Lol.

I have thi exact Macbook. Mint with the box and everything it cme with. Even the remote control that still worked with original battery. Great video. Wonder how much these are worth MINT and Fully working perfectly?

What is oldest (no Mac Pro) Macs you can upgrade 4gb ram? I have 09 Mac Mini. This is 4gb ram.
The oldest Mac is the late 2006 MacBook Pro, all Core Duo Macs are limited to 2GB.
I HAVE THIS MODEL BUT DOESN´T HAVE THE BATTERY MODULE... I´M TRYING TO FIND
Apple stoppes making batteries for these years ago. You’ll need to look for third party batteries.
A lucky find!👍👍 It would run well with Linux Mint the Mate version as it suits older hardware, I mostly use the Opera browser as it can be set up for individual preferences.
If one would actually want to daily a machine like this, that’d be a good option, yes. I prefer to keep older versions of OS X on here for fun, as I have plenty of other more modern machines for the real daily duties.
@@nelizmastr Yes, that makes sense. I enjoy seeing the new lease of life which older computers get when the maximum amount of ram., and an ssd., and a modern Linux OS., are installed, a good clean and new thermal paste and a new Cmos battery also help.

The current gen 16" MBP comes somewhat close in terms of design, the overall shape is not unlike the pre-unibody like this 17". I'd love to see an M2 chip in one of these, though.

Will it work good with Mac OS Yosemite or El Capitan ?
No. You’ll need a late 2007 or early 2008 for those systems to work due to unsupported graphics in the 2006 models. The ATI X1600 is only officially supported up to Lion 10.7.5.

Core Duo will only run up to Snow Leopard. Only Core 2 Duo can run Lion and unofficially beyond that.

os x mavericks one of the best versions in my opinion its the last version to run decently on a hard drive I remeber when I put el capitan on my 2009 mac mini and it was on mavericks when I got it and el capitan ruined the performance by a ton it was unusably slow almost
Yep Mavericks was my favorite of those older OS X versions as well. I had a Mac Pro 2008 when Yosemite came out and it ran a good bit worse than Mavericks did. Ended up getting an SSD. In 2014 they were becoming cheap enough.

How did you upgrade to USB 3??
By fitting an expresscard 34 expansion card with a USB 3 controller. Mind you USB 3 doesn’t work under Snow Leopard or older.

With the Parrotgeek guide. Keep in mind you need a 64-bit processor, so it won’t work on the Core Duo model
