Restoring and upgrading 17 Inch MacBook Pro and eGPU test!

- Hi everyone, thank you for 21:55 of your time. In this video I restore the MacBook Pro mid-2009 17". Upgrades, from 4GB DDR3 1066 to 8GB DDR3 1333 and from HDD to 256GB SSD. The laptop is working fine and still good for basic daily tasks. It's old but still okay. GPU's that I test: NVidia GT 9600 1GB, NVidia GTX 960 4GB and MSI RX 580 8GB Gaming X. In this video I Install macOS Catalina Public Beta.
UPDATE: MacBook's with NVIDIA GPU can run much newer macOS!

eGPU on ten years old macbook pro, dude you gain a new subscriber
Hey Andrew, nice video. One tip if you install an aftermarket SSD. You should enable TRIM in the terminal because MacOS doesn't enable SSD TRIM automatically for 3rd party SSD's. It's really easy: Just run the command "sudo trimforce enable" in terminal and reboot your MacBook. Check in system information if trim is enabled after rebooting. Cheers.

I have the mid 2010 model with Catalina running good on an ssd. I still can't believe I found it on a pile of E Waste. I think reason they threw it in the trash was because it didn't support the latest Mac os or maybe because it was very slow. I always try to give new life to computers that a thrown in the trash by companies or random people.

*Pro tip: The fan blades can be pulled up and off, making them easier to clean

Ok some are yes and some are no. Sunon fan blades cannot be removed. Some brands like delta are yes
The heatsink design from 2009 to 2011 is why so many of these have died. Who was the engineer who thought moving the heat through one pipe was a good idea. They should have been separate pipes.
when you clean that dry thermal paste, it's usually a good idea to soak it with some isopropyl alcohol for a short time (maybe 30 seconds at least) to soften it up before scraping or brushing.

Hi! May I know the smc version of your computer(in the system report)? I have the the similar version of MBP 17 (early 2009) and believe the laptops have the same SMC originally. I restored the smc with a wrong version. And There is no information about this smc firmware across the whole internet...

I have two of these Macbook pro 17" laptops. One with T9600 @2.8GHz and one with T9550 @2.66GHz and 8GB RAM respectively.
These MacBooks are still great, with a stunning quality
Well done! Nice video. I am currently running a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 17 inch with a 512 SSD & 8GB of RAM. It’s an absolutely pristine condition and runs as fast as it did from the day I bought it. Works out to about $25 a month Canadian on a MacBook Pro for the last 10 years. Sure beats the dickens out of windows PCs and their costs.

@@brandonphilander661 yip it can take 16gb thats what i have..works well. i have a ssd and new thermal paste that helped the fans not to always spin..
ssd. 16gb. and new thermal paste gives it a new life. it runs as good as my 2019 mackbook air

On this Mac Its possible expand the Ram memory to up 16gb on ddr3 an you easy running Catalina. Try to change for SSD 3D Nan technology and if is possible for you, get one SSD whit 1Tb and your MAC RUNS LIKE 💨

I agree after the 2015, I couldnt get the 15 touch bar 2016-2019, I tried it out for a month but returned it after, was not satisfied the same. But this 16 inch MBP I am using with 5600M right now is a masterpiece of a computer.
Did you try installing windows to get those e-gpus working ? A little gaming test in that combination would be pretty interesting
BOOTCAMP doesn’t support eGPUs unfortunately
The cards may not be supported but shouldnt there be 3rd party drivers? What if you dual boot Windows?

Why did I watch this video? I was completely happy ignoring the state of my MBP 17 early 2009.
Now watching this video I thought I should at least clean my Macbook for the sake of it. It was getting easily warm and kernel panic.
Now it lays on my workbench in pieces. Thermal past was hard as concrete. Now the logic board it is Dust free with one blown capacitor and some corrosion.
Fixing clients laptops is always easier than my own.

Apple should bring back this 17-inch flagship. Maybe the rumored 16-inch will do similar job
The 16 inch is just a slight increase in body size. It by all means just increase in screen size and it's rumored to be bezel less so the body won't be much bigger than the 15 inch one.
And the 16 inch one is said to replace the 15 inch. So there's that.

currently watching this video on my Mid 2009 17 inch Macbook pro, I'm using OS X lion and to be hones ArcticFox browser really brings this os back to life, and I also have all the app I need to complete all my tasks, I cleaned it replaced the thermal paste, upgraded the ram to 8GB 1333mhz and anice 240gb SSD made it run like a charm, still not blazing fast but good enough, I only got it for 40$ so I really can't complain.

kinda screwed it up, yo didn't really give a step by step on what you did to install it. it looks like you went to the start up part but then you were able to choose Catalina as I was only given the option to install Yosemite
You can also install a fresh operating system to a new drive over the internet by holding command r on boot up. This will bring you into disk utility where you install the os over the web

Hi bro, I the ram is Samsung, but you can use some other brands, also i think this ram is low voltage, not standard 1.5v. You can check which ram is in your macbook than you can get other but with the same voltage

An RX 580 should work under Catalina, I guess Dosdude’s patcher removes official drivers and only leaves patched stuff for your machine during install
There is actually tech inside the head of the charger that tells the computer how many watts can be supplied, so your 80 watt charger is now only supplying 60 watts to the MacBook, as it has the replacement head on it.
not true. It works over a 1-wire protocol and a chip inside the charger tells the head what to report to the motherboard :)

Looks too much work for me. I’d be terrified. Mine has had a lot of knocks (I got it second hand) the optical drive no longer works and it’s not upgradable anymore. I saw someone swapped out the dvd drive for a Blu-ray I’m not sure if that was the same model. The hinge is also shattered. I purchased a replacement but was too nervous to fit it.
Now i had great times of using the Catalina patcher than the High Sierra since the High Sierra was 32-bit while Catalina is on first 64-bit ever run on my older Macbook Mid 2010..
I was worried that Catarina would damage my Mac 2011late how I see it is possible without any patches. Also I noticed the GPU was up to par and didn't percent any problems

Hi bro, is easy, not hard as is looking, I made 3 partition and every single is for a different OS, btw if you cannot downgrade than you need to make full data backup and make clean install of macOS version that you want to have, ( Make FULL BACKUP, Clean Install will erase all data )

Nice idea but the parts are so old that they could fail easily. I had a 2008 which I used until 2018 - screen went and I didn't want to go through the trouble to replace it. I used it with an external monitor but the battery bulged and damaged the MB and that was the end of that. I will eventually upgrade to a 16 but I just use my 2014 and 2015 15s with external displays.
