Today we’re cleaning up a heavily used 15” Apple Macbook Pro from 2006. This was very expensive when it was released and has seen a hard life. So, let’s restore it and see what it’s still capable of :) #apple #laptop #restoration

Thanks for watching 🙂 A few of you mentioned that you've also seen the weird pitting on the palm rest. Meaning it was just heavy use combined with sweat 😅
I always thought it was from heavy use with a watch on the wrist. Could just be sweat!

@EpicXDavo.Mp4 yeah that’s your own problem. People will still reply all they want. Which is understandable. You can also just disable notifications or delete your comment.
Here I am on my M1 MacBook Pro, waiting until the year 2036 to watch Psivewri review it as 'the first M1 Mac from 2021'!!!
I often use a relative's M1 MacBook Air and would love to see a review of it in the future too!
Keep it until then and post it to him!
trouble is, M1 macbooks are very unrepairable and not upgradable one bit. the RAM is part of the M1 and soldered to the board. the storage is also soldered. and the batteries are usually glued or require a proprietary driver. not good!
@@TheSpotify95 I’m sure an M1 even after 17 years should run fine assuming it’s been taken care of. I’ve got an iMac that’s the same age and it too runs great to this day. I can see the battery being a pain to fix though, once the system gets old enough to not be eligible for official hardware support anymore.
@@hunterjay8331 ummm had you heard of the ssd issue with the newest m1 MacBooks
I had the 17" model and it lasted me 10 whole years with me only having to swap out the battery once. It actually never actually died but it was so outdated i had to get a new one. Definitely one of the better pros ever released by Apple.
I just replaced my 15 inch mid 2010 macbook pro. Bought it new in the fall of 2010 and have been through two batteries and two chargers. It still works OK but im going back to school and figured it would be time to update to the new 16 inch m1 .. hopefully i get another 10 years out of this one! Great products!
yeah nowadays the macbooks only last a year or two before becoming unusable...
A testament to the sheer reliability of old Macs…
While the maximum OS X it's able to run is ancient, it still works perfectly fine under Windows 10 while drivers for everything are available ;-)
Snow Leopard's still useable too. I use it daily.
@@insertnamehere6559 what can u do with it?

@@MyDaumenHoch Linux doesn't work properly on a lot of these older devices thanks to the graphics cards being unsupported. I got debian on a 2006 imac but the brightness was stuck on max and the graphics ran horribly, sadly.

I had this Macbook Pro and it lasted 8 years. I once woke up and it was laying flat [AND open] on the floor - I stepped on it and it was still working and worked for another 5 years. 8 Months ago I bought the new Macbook Air and now going through a new upgrade.... Good old days.
I so remember back in that time that running 4gigs was actually a little overkill back then. Since, rarely did you even really need that much ram. Now here we are questioning whether we need 8gigs or 16gigs on a MacBook or more is really needed. Crazy how far we really have come. :)

This is the same model MacBook Pro I bought for myself in early 2007. It was a beast. I paid $4750 AUD with Apple care and an elgato USB tv tuner card. I threw a 120ssd in it in 2015 and gave it to a friend in 2016. He still uses it. Such a solid machine. It ran half-life 2 just fine back in the day
the pricetag seems really real for apple
I remember when someone I knew showed up with one of these back in the days. It felt 3x as fast as other laptops we've had at the time
Had one of these in Year 11/12 in 2007 and 2008, but the Santa Rosa version - what a machine. Picked it up at Mac Centre Norwood. Kept it till the retina models came out in 2012. I basically completely replaced my desktop at the time as these things were so powerful. Nice video, cheers!
What a coincidence, I just finished fixing my Dad's MacBook pro from 2007, and just got my hands on an 06! Great video!

I have one of these in my office closet but it no longer boots. It was my favorite machine, and definitely has the best keyboard of any laptop I've ever owned. I got many years of service out of the machine, and extended it's life by installing an SSD as well. I'd love to get it running again.
I just got an early 2008 17" model and for a while, your video tripped me up, because the internal layout of both is incredibly similar, while it's pretty hard to understand scale through a video
I HAD THIS MacBook Pro! If not this model it was a refresh released spring/summer of 2007. Solid machine. Ran bootcamp and Windows XP/early 2000s games amazingly well. I think it was one of the last ones before unibody and you should still get a matte screen instead of gloss. I loved this laptop. Almost as much as my old PowerBook 17" 1.6GHz. Which I bought right before they switched to Core 2 Duo machines. Even now I type this out on a i7 MacBook Pro 16" which of course I bought right before the M1 announcement... hah!
You know they're Australian when they have a can of EUCALYPTUS spray on the side of the table.. 😂😂

The 17" version was my daily-driver through most of my teen years! I got it secondhand of course. I ran Windows XP with BootCamp and played CS, Left 4 Dead, Battlefield 2… It ran them great! Also one day it wasn't enough obviously.
The unit we have at home is still working. But its battery is dead and the screen is very dim. That's an odd way for a screen to age nowadays, but it seems to be recurrent with these machines.
I personally never liked the keyboard and always preferred the then new external keyboard that came with iMacs. But I often heard people liked it, yeah
Nice video!
Left 4 dead is amazing. 😃👍
My old high school has been buying Apple computers for probably 18 years now. I remember when the stainless laptops came out and you had like 2 or 3 teachers complaining how the computer burned their laps when using them. One kid asked if she was naked..

I had a 17" one around that time. The build quality has really got a lot better, a few things of note,
- you used to get an almost static shock from resting your palm on the edge of the laptop, where the top case joined with the bottom (the good old days).
- I miss the battery icon charge/ standby lights or rather the laser cut LED holes in the aluminium that you could barely see when off. They killed them off after the first lot of unibodies for some reason.
the original owner watched alot of people have a good time. we'll go with that
Ah yes, the good ol' days killing cows for money on RuneScape. NOW I really feel old.
Great video Nathan!

Still baffled at how good these machines look, I think they were designed so well they'll never look that outdated.
I just bought a 17” one to use for older devices that need legacy IO like FireWire, and the thing looks nicer to me than my 2017 13” pro
my dads a graphics designer and had one of these when i was growing up. I remember playing minecraft on it and having my first experiences with after effects, premiere and photoshop on it. I think in the end he was offered an upgrade but I really don't remember, even when being used up until 2013 (when he got the upgrade), there being any noticeable lag or performance issues. I loved that thing, I'd love to get it back but its probably gone to the dump at this point.
My mum still use the same laptop, she upgraded it with 4gb of ram and ssd, I also installed Yosemite with a patch tool and it’s actually pretty usable even in 2021
The bezels and aspect ratio are surprisingly modern! I've seen way worse at the local best buy tbh!
I love how it was easy to upgrade. I wish today's MacBook Pro did that
I own the late 2007 model and I love this Mac. It's one that originally shipped with Tiger but went all the way to El Capitan. I need to get a new drive for it so it can run a little faster. I also maxed out the RAM at 6GB.
Looks satisfying to optimize and clean it manually

Ok, fine, I joined the Eucalyptus Oil squad. I love these reviews of old laptops, especially old Apples. Back from when things were built to last and meant to be fixed, not with "survive until warranty expires" as the designers' goal. Thanks for the great content!
I have both the 15" and 17" versions of these MacBook Pro's, used in my studio to provide long obsolete synthesisers when I need them. Wonderful machines and it's nice to see someone giving them a run out (other than me 😂)
the black splotches on the palm rest actually reflect an issue of these older TI/AI cases (including the older Powerbook G4). Salt excreted from sweaty palms routinely corroded the top case!
Ah, it's always nice to see a well used computer. They always have a story to tell.
Yeah like an old, well worn pair of trainers.
mine: gaming, word, excel, UA-cam, chrome.
LMFAO, a dull story but a story nonetheless
My old 2005 laptop played around 1500 hours of WoW and lived to tell the tale.
I found one a 2.16GHZ Core Duo model at a thrift store for $30 CAD. I downloaded windows 10 on it using rEFit. All I have to do now is get all of the right drivers and it will be my new productivity machine!
I bought one of these used (almost 6 years after release) in middle school, super cool to see someone using it years later.
I had my first Mac in 2007 it was the Macbook // I still miss those 3D Icons!! Especially with that 3D white base!! 2 of the features that really impressed me at that time was the Garage Band, and the Chess game. I don't think I'll ever forget that machine!! it was a whole experience for me! That 3d processing Turkish blue bar is another thing that I miss about it.. It brings me lots of memories.. I am a X Gen dude who grew up with a Commondore Vic 20. I'm pretty well adapted when it comes to technology and social media apps; to the point that I could have a long conversation with a Z Gen person regarding trends, technology and other things. But the advantage I think I have over Gen Zs and millennials is that I appreciate a lot more this new technology, since I grew up without it, and damm! I still remember perfectly how it was when we used to still have a rotary phone. or the first time I saw a Windows 3.0 PC ... I also remember attending a Windows XP conference in Tucson in 2001.. Hell!! Was I impressed!! mi first Mac experience was in 1983 while taking "Logo " Drawing classes during a Summer camp in my hometown.. Proud to be old! lol
I had this MacBook Pro back in the day to replace the PowerBook G4 that I bought in 2001. Wonderful machine that lasted me many years. Love the fact that both my PowerBook and MacBook Pro had an average life span of about 5-6 years.
Watching this on a IBook G4.
Lol
My first Mac was a 2006 MBP. Still runs great, that thing was a beast.
14 years later, still looks better than just about any laptop out there.
15 years!
So satisfying when seeing you cleaning up the dust
I did similar work on a 15-in MacBook Pro (early 2008), adding a 4 GB RAM module to the existing 2 GB unit. The horrid 200 GB 5400 rpm HDD made way for a cheap 240 GB SSD, those two features making it a much more usable proposition. It has 10.6.8 on it when I acquired it and getting it upgraded to 10.9 Mavericks was a real trial, the only way possible was to temporarily put the SSD into an external FireWire case and do the installation another Mac. It now has 10.11.6 El Capitan (which installed with no problem) and Safari is no longer supported by most websites. I have usable versions of Firefox, Brave and Chrome that can't be upgraded. The battery was replaced five months ago, alas I paid $120, not $60 as you did. I really do love that "type" of keyboard.
I still believe that old macbooks are very usable and good looking
Great video
Thank you
Let me give you a simple tip. Instead using a plastic card try using your finger and a plastic bag. Insert your finger inside the bag and put the thermal paste in your finger and just use your finger to apply the thermal. Is the easier way to apply and distribute the thermal paste and not get dirt in your finger. 👍🏻
What was so crazy about having a computer like this back then was that you yourself might not have had fast internet but you could take this computer with you, because it was a laptop. You could take it to different places that did have DSL and Cable modem wifi connections and really enjoy all of things we take for granted today like youtube, video porn sites, blogs and limewire. That was the real selling point for these types of machines but I promise you most of us hardcore pc gamers just wanted an a 360 and an alienware. Rich college kids lusted after these.

I swapped the display on a 2006 MacBook Pro for an LED panel from a later model. They're actually compatible, and it definitely solves the brightness issue with these old CCFL panels. The process of swapping it was *hell*, though. I sold the computer for a good profit, but I wouldn't do it again. Too frustrating.

It´s actually funny to see how such old laptops are still running fine while modern devices will fail after just a few years of use.
I have a few old compaq laptops and they´re 23 and 25 years old (according to release date) and still work excellent.
One of them even can run Windows 7, not great but it was installed successfully using only this machine, a windows 7 recovery disk (cdrom, no dvd drive) and a external ssd connected via usb with the setup files (can be run via cmd from recovery disk).
Took "only" a hour to install and first boot the OS on a pentium III 500Mhz machine.
as far as i can remember wayback 2006, 4gb Ram is OP, because wayback 2009 to finish my Thesis and have a new Windows laptop, 1gb for me in that time is Good. now i can see,, time flies, im old
I was recently given a basically nos 15” 2007 mbp. Original battery has 27 cycles. I updated to El Capitan, 240 gb ssd and 6 gb of ram. I use it for editing a couple of very very old websites that a client hasn’t upgraded yet.
I have this 2006 model. Bought it second hand some seven years ago for €250,-. It still runs perfectly. Thanks for your video!
I had one of these. I used it to play World of Warcraft while traveling for work. It was a great machine.
Damn, what a gorgeous machine. Those keyboards are far better than any of the newer ones. I love they are chunky also
I still use from time to time a similar model (C2D 2.16ghz, 4gb ram and a SSD, running 10.6.8 ) I bought new in 2006. It´s very much like new.
I had this!!!! it was my graduation present!!!! it crapped out around 2013. Lasted a good while though!
This is an excellent video. It was fun getting to watch you fully refurbish a laptop which, I have in my collection. Like you, I enjoy the screen and keyboard on these units. In addition, there is a great selection of ports: expansion card slot, external monitor port, audio-in port, audio-out port, two (2) USB "A" ports, Fire-wire 400 port, and a Fire-wire 800 port. Plus it still has a built-in DVD super-drive. Prefer to keep mine on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard because with Rosetta, you are able to run older Power PC OS X software titles. Also, using the Apple white remote control makes Front Row a lot of fun (smile...smile).
My first MacBook Pro, I still have mine and will be restoring it soon.
Just wanted to let you know you are one of my favorite UA-camrs!
Caught myself a refurbished latest m1 pro 512 ssd 8 gb at 1299$ price range. Runs smooth as butter no hiccup or nothing
"Lego-style connector", ah, love the JerryRigEverything reference :)
When you do these videos, you should try installing a linux distro on these old computers to see if they can run an updated OS from nowadays.
I just installed peppermint os 32 bit on an 05’ pentium 4 3.06ghz and it works fine. Only hang up is a cpu that old has a hard time running UA-cam’s code. (Nvdia Quattro 600 1gb, but that’s not the bottleneck). But great for light office work/video/emulation gaming and some light web surfing.
Great vid, thank you! :-)This model was my first Mac computer, and a great machine that followed me through the school of architecture. Great for dual booting Windows XP and running Rhino and V-Ray :-)

Nice work. I'd love to see more before & after comparisons in terms of system boot-up time, temperature under load etc just to show what a bit of TLC could do for an older system like this.
I would absolutely have stuck with Snow Leopard on a Macbook of that era because of that low RAM ceiling and because SL is simply a far-superior OS. The difference in performance on my Late-2011 MBP 13" running 10.6.8 was astounding. Under 10.6, booting to a usable desktop takes about 20-30secs. In 10.7+, it's upwards of a minute (this is with the stock 5400rpm HD). Perhaps with an SSD the difference would be less extreme, although 10.6 is also way less RAM-hungry.
When Lion was new, 4GB of RAM was workable, if you were militant at keeping a minimum number of applications open (a browser, Mail, iCal, plus one or two MS Office applications...). In 2021, with newer browsers and other software, it would be close to unusable given the OS' larger footprint just by itself. These days, my trusty MBP is on Sierra, and just with Chrome and Mail in use, we're sitting at 5.5GB used RAM. Thankfully we've come a long way from the days of Mavericks and its sloppy RAM Management & Compression, where all 8GB would be used caching great swathes of rubbish, and the system would behave like Vista on a 486.
its always nice to see the history of laptops keep them coming
Cool for use with old firewire cameras and sound interfaces.
Would probably try to find a cool sticker to hide that damage on the wristrest
You gave a lot of love to that old computer.
My dad had one of those, installed windows 7 on it the madlad.
I always thought the unibody model which replaced it looked clunky in comparison. Only after the 2012 retina models they got some of the sleekness back.
I bought my first computer in 1986, a desktop Compaq that cost $5000. It ran on a dos program and had orange writing on the monitor. And I think it had 20 mb ram
Nice restoration still a very useable machine with not bad battery life these are a great looking laptop .
I used to have that one! Maybe not the top of the line but def that generation. Ahhh good memories
My dad bought one for about £2000 in 2006 and it died in 2017, utterly reliable
I have a couple first gen macbooks that still work, and putting an SSD in them makes a huge difference in usability. The other thing that makes them much more usable is installing linux, you can actually run a modern operating system on them with no old unresolved security issues, and all the modern features. Ive even gotten one ofthem running windows 10 that was previously installed on an old hard drive.
Just wanna say thx for the content you and hugh really inspired me for saving old tech
linux lite 5.2 is a modern version of linux that completely supports the x1600 and will give you modern, secure browsers and applications. i've been using one of these 2006 macbooks forever with linux.
I have one c2d the problem of that era was the GPU that was soldering with uv and with the time crash.
Ah memories, I remember when these come out, I was working for a third party authorized service centre, pull so many of these apart, those cables sucked, but you learn tricks..lol
