    Ummm, they did show the gassed family in the theatrical release, which I saw at the cinema. Ari Aster is a master, he makes Christian so unlikeable that we ultimately cheer his end.

    First off, I love horror and emotionally devastating movies, and Midsommar is one of my favorite movies in that regard.
    The opening scene with the parents and the sister was one of the worst, most disturbing things I've ever seen. It was so incredibly sad and awful to think about the amount of pain someone must suffer (caused by their own brain) to take actions like this. She thought this through, planned it meticulously, and made absolutely sure she can't back out even if she should change her mind The shot of her with the duct tape haunted me for months after my first watch.
    It actually made the gore and weirdness that followed feel tame in comparison, and I couldn't stop thinking about Dani's family throughout.
    It's an incredible movie.

    Sweden and Norway are so so beautiful and the people so friendly, i couldnt help think that only the swedes would be ok with a film that portrays a sun cult and doesnt start screaming about ruining tourism lol yeah 24 hour sun in summer but also 24 hours of dark in the winter months! i visited top of Norway and arctic circle on a cruise in march and was absolutely stunning, i would love to go in the summer - but snow biking myself over a lake to go crab fishing and then spending a night in an ice hotel and dog sleighing across countryside at sunset was so awesome lol, even had dinner with Vikings old style - would love to do again :)

    Off-topic, and tl;dr, but as a 65-year-old who grew up with things like Blade Runner (one of my favorite movies) showing "when she says no, she means yes" and the seduction of too-too young people, and how icky, really, the huge age difference between, say, a vampire and a teenager...I really appreciate and applaud younger people calling that stuff out and in groups. I thought I was cognizant, but I've learned so much from reactors. I may have felt uncomfortable about some representations but wouldn't necessarily had the words to explain what I thought was wrong about something like the down-right abusive the boyfriend was, nor would calling it out have been supported in friend groups. So. I lurve me reactors and love the discussion here, in particular. Thanks.

    For anyone interested in the meanings of: the runes, the location, the real traditions, the colors chosen, the 9's, the paintings, the way ppl were killed, the bear, and anything else or any other questions you might have about this movie; all of it is answered in this video: ua-cam.com/video/xZQv1_oosZg/v-deo.html . I strongly encourage everyone to watch it in full, or you can skip around to the things you are interested in specifically as there are very convenient time stamps in the video description. Almost all of the information comes from 1st hand sources so there isn't a bunch of speculation on what things mean. For those who think they understand what the runes mean (like the woman in this reaction), you are mistaken, as a lot of those shown in this movie do not have their traditional meanings and have meanings that are specific to the Hårga cult in the film.

      @MarcosElMalo2 20 днів тому +1

      100%.
      I’m not sure if I’d just call it bizarre, though. There are different levels of reality going on here and the boundaries of those levels dissolve. The story is told naturalistically for the most part, with heavy doses of surrealism. The mis en scene is awash in symbols, ones that we don’t understand but that we understand are symbols.
      Imagine that instead of this having the context of a horror film, it was instead being told as a folk tale or fairy tale. We might ask what the various elements of the story represent psychologically.
      So how’s this for an alternative title: How Dani Got Her Groove Back. 😂

    I find it incredible when anyone thinks because a character is stupid or rude they deserve to die. Nearly any horror film has both types. The boyfriend and all the others didn’t deserve death. But I suppose the may queen may have psychological issues since she has similar dna as her sister and the same family. She lost her family and boyfriend and eventually with mushroom tea, she accepted her new position in the commune.

    This is a break up movie.
    There’s many levels here, but first and foremost this is a movie about breaking up from a bad relationship with a toxic partner.
    Is this also a horror movie about a cult with murderous rituals? Yes, maybe, I guess. I have two thoughts about that. One is that this is a mirror to our own cult-ture. We have our own ritualized murder and sacrifice that is so deeply embedded in our culture that the majority of us don’t really question them. We don’t understand our own rituals as rituals. They are just how things are.
    The other thought is more of a fascination with the idea of an ancient religion, centuries old, maybe millennia old, that survives hidden away in our modern world-and also preying on us moderns to perpetuate itself.
    This movie also contains a criticism of how we practice Anthropology. The principle of the detached observer did not help these grad students see what was going on.
    All in all, this is a weird, trippy, very beautiful movie. I am glad that it has a happy ending, even if it’s hard to grasp that it is indeed happy.
