For me, Jeff Goldblum’s performance is easily one of the best in any horror film I’ve seen. The way his mannerisms evolve over the course of the film to resemble The Fly and how heartbreaking he becomes by the time it’s too late is what sticks with me
Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis got married a year after the movie's release but called it quits in 1992. He even dated Laura Dern while they were filming JURASSIC PARK, but ended the relationship in 1997.
They built a tumbling room for Brundle to crawl around on the ceiling as they glued and nailed down everything to create the effect. As a matter of fact, THE THING almost had a sequence where the Palmer Thing was going to run across the ceiling and drop down on the character Windows, with its jaws wide open, but it was scrapped.
One of the best Sci-fi Body Horror Thriller Films ever made! It won the Oscar for Best Makeup. It made $60 million dollars against a $10-11 million dollar budget. It's also one of the best horror remakes alongside THE THING and THE BLOB.
The fly doesn't take hold immediately because it's mass is so much smaller than Brundle, whereas the door of the pod is more equal. Think about if you place a small drop of food colouring into water, it will slowly disperse into the water eventually colouring it all over time. Whereas if you drop in a shot glass worth it will colour the water immediately.
There was this great period in the 80's where there were terrific remakes of 1950's horror classics, such as "The Fly" and "The Thing". In the same vein, PLEASE also react to "The Blob" 1988, which also has outstanding practical effects.
Cronenberg's actually a surprisingly good actor, he just doesn't do it a lot. He's FANTASTIC as the main villain in Clive Barker's Nightbreed, he genuinely gives me chills every time I watch that because he presents such a spin-chillingly effective portrayal of a soulless psychopath masquerading as a functionally rational human being. I also really enjoyed his turn as a very eloquent conspiracy theorist in Disappearance At Clifton Hill.
Absolutely! I love the character of Decker and Cronenberg's portrayal of him! That's how I immediately recognise his voice as the doctor in the giant maggot dream sequence
This was the 2nd movie that Goldblum and Davis worked together, the first being "Transylvania 6-5000" (1985). Davis and Goldblum would marry one another in 1987.
25:30 ‘But where’s the fly?’ … ‘And also are we ever gonna answer that question?’ … ‘I think we gotta answer it.’ Oh yes, Roxy, Coy, we definitely get that answer.
If you want peak Goldblum you need to watch Earth Girls are Easy, also featuring Geena Davis along with Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans . Came out 2 years after this masterpiece.
If you want to see more classic Goldblum react to Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). And if you want to see more incredible full body makeup but shown in a very moving story react to The Elephant Man.
i think Jeff Goldblum was a bigger name than Geena Davis when this was made. Fun fact, she would read “the Accidental Tourist” to Jeff while he was in makeup before going on to win her Oscar for her role in the film.
OMG YES ROXY & COY !!! Been looking forward to this reaction ever since you mentioned it months ago 😂This is probably my favorite body horror film. Jeff Goldblum did an amazing job he's phenomenal!
(1) Love this Rejects pairing! Glad you both didn't spiral into your Boston accents... but I wouldn't have been mad. (2) We owe Coy his comedy! You two should definitely follow this up by watching Goldblum and Davis in 'Earth Girls are Easy.' (3) "Is it live or is it Memorex," is from an old commercial. He should have followed it up with, "Beats me" (Ella Fitzgerald). It wasn't so much VHS back then, but cassettes. (4) My favorites of any of your actual reactions are when movies roll credits abruptly. You should do a compilation.
"I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the insect is awake." On the surface some of the most amazing body horror ever made, but ultimately a beautifully tragic love story where the *sshole ex boyfriend is instrumental in saving the day. And Jeff Goldblum should have at LEAST had an Oscar nomination if not the win for this performance.
There's a conversation to be had about actors who stop acting and just start being exaggerated versions of themselves in films. I love Jeff Goldblum, but this was back when he actually performed. Now, he goes hard on what people call the Goldbulm-isms. But if you watch his early stuff, he's an incredible actor when he really goes in for a performance. Not that he's not good in his recent performances, but pretty much after The Lost World: Jurassic Park, he started leaning into the Goldblum-isms.
Cronenberg tried out four different epilogue scenes but wasn't satisfied with any of them, so he finally gave up and decided nothing could follow the actual death of Brundle.
Just to be clear the relationship has been taking place over 6 months. Also, watch Part 2 if you think there's still something you're missing from the end of this one. It is a good movie in its own right. Just not the same as this movie.
This is no horror film, it's a tragic love story. You really feel sorry for what happened and want Seth to reverse the effects and just as bad for Ronnie watching him deteriorate.
"Be afraid. Be very afraid." was also used on the poster. "Is it live, or is it Memorex?" was the slogan (used in commercials and print) for Memorex cassette tapes. "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" is a children's folk song written in the 1940's. Though horrific, I think this movie is more of a tragedy than any other genre.
The Fly is my all time favorite body horror. I always see the film as a body horror/tragedy. The practical effects and fly makeup is so amazing. I also love the music.
There's a sequel: THE FLY II (1989). There was never a third. There's an original trilogy: THE FLY (1958), RETURN OF THE FLY (1959) and CURSE OF THE FLY (1965)
"I don't think this movie is that kind." No, it's not. Not at all. Also, the film is a commentary on oldage and degenary diseases and how it changes our loved ones and the pain it causes to see them changing into something else.
Always love to see reactions to The Fly. One of the most intense films to watch for the body horror. If you are interested in seeing Cronenberg in an acting role, I highly recommend watching “Nightbreed”, written and directed by the great Clive Barker. Personally my favorite 80’s horror film.
My favourite horror film of all time and favourite monster transformation done in any film. The combination of Goldblum's incredible performance and the award winning make-up effects made such an iconic and tragic character who you feel bad for every time you rewatch this classic.
I think ye misinterpreted the 'the flesh makes you crazy' line. They weren't talking about the effects of eating flesh. They were talking about the look, feel, heat taste etc of flesh while it's on another person and the effect it can have on other people (in a non cannibalistic way).
I remember seeing this in the theater with my mom when it first came out. We were just about the only people who were still sitting upright at the end, almost everyone else had slid down in their seats so we could only see the tops of their heads. One of those rare remakes that surpassed the original, and still one of the best body horror movies ever. To this day, I’m still really upset that Jeff Goldblum wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for his performance.
The trifecta of '80s remakes of classic '50s sci-fi horror includes THE BLOB, THE THING, and this. Cronenberg's body horror take is truly unsettling and heartbreaking all at once thanks to the fantastic acting by Goldblum & Davis (who were involved and shortly thereafter wed - sadly their relationship ended in divorce) with Oscar-calibre performances and Chris Walas' Oscar-winning make-up f/x (he also created the beasties for GREMLINS) still proving practical is always the best way to go. Grotesque and poignant - um so not a horror-comedy - yes there's a dark sense of dry humor (like 2%) the rest is classic sci-fi horror (the original is so worth a watch co-starring the iconic Vincent Price). Sadly during production Cronenberg's mom was dying of cancer - which reflects strongly as a metaphorical parable of disease as well as during the AIDS epidemic which was in full-bloom at this point in history. I hope you continue to check out all of Cronenberg's canon - THE BROOD, RABID, SCANNERS & VIDEODROME drip with his characteristic body horror tropes. RE: the 'fly-baby' there is a direct sequel (directed by Walas) THE FLY II starring Eric Stoltz (miscast only because he's a ginger and looks nothing like his 'rents ;d) Indeed you have nothing but sympathy/empathy for Brundle and his tragic outcome (how the fuck could you not?). John Getz' slimy ex has arguably the most compelling character arc redemption in cinema IMO (you absolutely despise him yet are horrified for his aftermath and then dumbstruck that he does the heroic thing in saving Davis).
25:17 Memorex also made (and was probably more famous for) audio cassettes. The tag line "Is it Live or is it Memorex?" was geared more toward audio recordings- that they sound so good you couldn't tell if it was being played live or not.
I love that you can tell Roxy has become nearly totally desensitized by the past year is horror movies. She nearly watched the whole fingernail/ bathroom scene without batting an eye
I love it when the only thing people know about a movie is wrong. Definitely, not a comedy. Way before League of their Own. This is Goldblooms movie not Geena Davis. Roxy asked Coy if he knew anything about this movie 3 times before it started. Its fun to watch Roxy squrm for all Purging she does to Tara.
Guess what?! I think I'm starting to see why you two were grounded from each other, but I also love the dynamic, so I hope you get to do more reactions together.
Was the one 1 year and months ago The Thing? That was a great reaction. You guys should have made a big deal about which one that was to drive more views back to it. Great one. 116k views as of now.
I never thought of this as a comedy, I suppose. I think Roxy said No 40 times in less than 20 seconds. Coy looks like he's about to burst with vomit, mans face can't get more red.
How a fly eats is that it throws up it's stomach acid on the food to break it down, then they suck it up. If i see a fly on my food i'm throwing it away.

If you wanna know what happened to the baby please react to the sequel the fly 2 great reaction keep up the great work
Guess what...
For me, Jeff Goldblum’s performance is easily one of the best in any horror film I’ve seen. The way his mannerisms evolve over the course of the film to resemble The Fly and how heartbreaking he becomes by the time it’s too late is what sticks with me
He should've gotten an Oscar nom for this movie.
Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis got married a year after the movie's release but called it quits in 1992. He even dated Laura Dern while they were filming JURASSIC PARK, but ended the relationship in 1997.
Surprised he didn’t go after the woman who played his wife on Independence Day
So he wasn't really acting when he was playing Ian Malcolm. He's always on the lookout for the next future ex-Mrs Goldblum.
This is a remake of a 1958 film but with Cronenberg’s spin on it. This is a great horror film.
Normally, I dislike remakes of older movies, but this movie is one of the few exceptions to that. "Night of the Living Dead" from 1990 is another one.
That makes so much sense given the way Palmer randomly flies to the ceiling at one point for no apparent reason
One of the best Sci-fi Body Horror Thriller Films ever made!
It won the Oscar for Best Makeup.
It made $60 million dollars against a $10-11 million dollar budget.
It's also one of the best horror remakes alongside THE THING and THE BLOB.
The Blob remake? I didn’t know that was considered a good remake. I’ll need to rewatch
this is probably my favorite body horror film of all time
Its up there for me but the substance is right up there now too
The fly doesn't take hold immediately because it's mass is so much smaller than Brundle, whereas the door of the pod is more equal. Think about if you place a small drop of food colouring into water, it will slowly disperse into the water eventually colouring it all over time. Whereas if you drop in a shot glass worth it will colour the water immediately.
The Fly 2 (1989)
I thought i remembered a sequel. Roxy & Coy should definitely react to Fly2!
Roxy and Coy together again!!! The Fly, still one of the best horror movies ever made and a favorite of mine from director David Cronenberg.
What was their previous video that went wild?
There was this great period in the 80's where there were terrific remakes of 1950's horror classics, such as "The Fly" and "The Thing". In the same vein, PLEASE also react to "The Blob" 1988, which also has outstanding practical effects.
Yes!!!
Another amazing 80's remake of a 50's film.
Also, "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" it had Jeff in that as well and Donald Sutherland. Excellent interpretation.
Thanks for reminding us to not drink and teleport.
It was the 80's, having your own espresso machine at home was pretty baller.
I'm very impressed that Coy got the "Memorex" remark, considering he was quoting a popular commercial from the 80s.
For Rick And Morty fans, in season 1 episode 6 when Rick accidentally turned everyone on earth into Cronenberg’s, THIS is what he meant.
You never forget the first time you watch The Fly. I sure didn’t.
Roxy and The Fly is an excellent combination.
Not in "the pods", but rather in a reaction sense.
It would be great if you gave the sequel to this movie a chance!
It's got great practical effects and a truly satisfying ending!
Oh yes, Roxy, Coy, we definitely get that answer.
11:56 Bloomberg and Gena Davis are also in "Earth girls are easy" also features Damian Wayans and Jim Carry.
Earth Girls was 1988 and Carrey was in a few films before Earth Girls incl The Dead Pool, the final Dirty Harry film.
Earth Girls Are Easy is NOT older than The Fly, and that is NOT Carrey's first movie lol
If you want peak Goldblum you need to watch Earth Girls are Easy, also featuring Geena Davis along with Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans . Came out 2 years after this masterpiece.
Yes!!! Roxy and Coy!! I've been wanting their team up again for ages!! The Thing was so fun!! Here we go!!
"I think even the Supreme Court would say you could get rid of this one, Babe"....👍
Great line!!!!!🤘👽🤘
😂😂😂😂😂
Indeed it was.
Of course, it would take the court 3 years to render a decision.
If you want to see more classic Goldblum react to Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).
And if you want to see more incredible full body makeup but shown in a very moving story react to The Elephant Man.
"What is Memorex?"
Jeez, I feel like I need a walker and some false teeth now ...
i think Jeff Goldblum was a bigger name than Geena Davis when this was made. Fun fact, she would read “the Accidental Tourist” to Jeff while he was in makeup before going on to win her Oscar for her role in the film.
I certainly hadn't heard of Goldblum before this but I remember Davis from Fletch (1985)
@ He started in the 70’s but i knew him specifically from the hit “The Big Chill” and “The Right Stuff” 3 years before this.
OMG YES ROXY & COY !!! Been looking forward to this reaction ever since you mentioned it months ago 😂This is probably my favorite body horror film. Jeff Goldblum did an amazing job he's phenomenal!
Sooo good
You want to know what happened? Watch "The Fly II" . It continues the story.
What's your FAVORITE Body Horror Movie???
Watching Greg and Roxy’s reaction on The Substance🤢
The Substance
Bone Tomahawk
The Thing (1982)
The hills of eye 1 and 2 is amazing
The Thing
Awesome Movie and Work Guys, Thanks!!!😎👍👍👍 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
15:04 sorry Roxy, but you're wrong on this one. "Computers are fast but dumb" is still the case today. It has not changed
More Coy and Roxy reactions! 🤘🏽I watched this recently myself for the first time and it was a trip.
The addict comparison is a good one. The other is to consider him as a person discovering he has a terminal illness.
It’s gross, sure, but so good. Jeff Goldblum is phenomenal and Geena Davis is just luminous.
(1) Love this Rejects pairing! Glad you both didn't spiral into your Boston accents... but I wouldn't have been mad.
(2) We owe Coy his comedy! You two should definitely follow this up by watching Goldblum and Davis in 'Earth Girls are Easy.'

This movie traumatized me as a kid
Us fans hereby remove Roxy and Coys probation and henceforth they may regularly record videos together 👨⚖
Love that
The scariest part of this movie was her hugging him right where his ear fell off
We need more practical effects today
"I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the insect is awake."
On the surface some of the most amazing body horror ever made, but ultimately a beautifully tragic love story where the *sshole ex boyfriend is instrumental in saving the day. And Jeff Goldblum should have at LEAST had an Oscar nomination if not the win for this performance.

Why is everything considered camp, do the ones saying it even know what it means.
This is no horror film, it's a tragic love story. You really feel sorry for what happened and want Seth to reverse the effects and just as bad for Ronnie watching him deteriorate.
Tragic scientist story
It can be horrific at times though when he's changing and people get messed up.
I don’t know - the teeth and the fingernails dropping out/off are pretty horrific. But otherwise I agree.
I think it's both. It can be both!
Right?
My favorite tragic love story is Event Horizon.
The special effects in this version are very advanced compared to the original with Vincent Price. I still love the original it's a classic.
man i love Roxy's pants the stars are so cool and hair nails colors are so cool
Thank you!
It's funny how Roxy always questions the obvious and logical. Great reaction video!
Another, one of my favorite films. That the rejects, are reacting too.
Roxy and Coy are a great team. Love them 😂😂
Bostonnn forever
The Fly is my all time favorite body horror. I always see the film as a body horror/tragedy. The practical effects and fly makeup is so amazing. I also love the music.
Omg Coy and Roxy again!!!🙌🏽❤❤…”guess what?” Haha…twisted and gross but one of the better remakes…hope you guys watch the sequel.
There's a sequel: THE FLY II (1989). There was never a third. There's an original trilogy: THE FLY (1958), RETURN OF THE FLY (1959) and CURSE OF THE FLY (1965)
This movie is great, a true classic! I’ve had a crush on Geena Davis since i saw her in this and Fletch
"I don't think this movie is that kind."
No, it's not. Not at all.
Also, the film is a commentary on oldage and degenary diseases and how it changes our loved ones and the pain it causes to see them changing into something else.
Been following you two since the movie news podcast days. So glad to have you both together again
Haven't even pushed play yet and I already know this is gonna be a banger reaction! The Fly is such a good movie!! 10/10 Goldblums!
I made the grave mistake of watching the behind the scenes on this as a teenager. Seeing how they did some of these effects scarred me for life.
Geena Davis is one of the most beautiful actresses to ever bless the silver screen.
More Coy & Roxy please!
I think ye misinterpreted the 'the flesh makes you crazy' line.
They weren't talking about the effects of eating flesh. They were talking about the look, feel, heat taste etc of flesh while it's on another person and the effect it can have on other people (in a non cannibalistic way).
It's not a horror it's a tragic love story.
It is horrific and tragic.
It can be both!
Fun fact: The obstetrician in the dream sequence was actually the director, David Cronenberg 😁
I remember seeing this in the theater with my mom when it first came out. Daaaaaamn Roxy! You looking FLY in those pants!
Please remove Roxy & Coy from probation!! They’re Bostonian gold!! Good team 👍🏽💯🏆🤩
Love this
Goldblum was completely robbed of an Oscar nomination for this.
The Boston Duo is back! ❤❤❤❤
As soon as Coy said Comedy I knew this would be an epic get you back on probation review!! Thanks in advance you two rebel rejects
My favorite romantic film, sweet.
This is definitely one of the better reaction channels W
"I just want to eat you up"
"Strange line"
/Sigh Too gone to save. And he had already tried the steak and wanted her opinion. God help us.
Yep, Stathis is the hero, who'd have thought?
I don’t know why in the world you two were put in probation. I like you two together.
This movie is a classic
Love this movie! I'm excited i get to see your reaction
Guess what?! I think I'm starting to see why you two were grounded from each other, but I also love the dynamic, so I hope you get to do more reactions together.
PETA absolutely goons to this movie, 100%.
Was the one 1 year and months ago The Thing? That was a great reaction. You guys should have made a big deal about which one that was to drive more views back to it. Great one. 116k views as of now.
Coy and Roxy👏👏
Can you do Independence day resurgence?
I never thought of this as a comedy, I suppose. I think Roxy said No 40 times in less than 20 seconds. Coy looks like he's about to burst with vomit, mans face can't get more red.
Maybe because it isn't.
There is a Fly 2 (1989) which is also very good, but good luck finding it.
41:38 I'd know that voice anywhere...that's David Cronenberg himself as the doctor delivering the larvae!
Cronenberg direction journey! Scanners, Videodrome, Dead Ringers, The Dead Zone, and Nightbreed (actor with Wes Craven directing).
First The Substance, then The Fly, now it’s time to watch Raw and Titane next.
How a fly eats is that it throws up it's stomach acid on the food to break it down, then they suck it up. If i see a fly on my food i'm throwing it away.
Roxy I love your pants! Queen of the Rox Stars
'A history of violence ' is my favorite Cronenberg movie
Don't do science with chatgpt.
Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum starred in Earth Girls are Easy a couple years after this which is a must watch imo
