After working with Nikon for the past 15+ years, I just switched to Olympus, Thank you for the videos I am learning this new camera really quickly, all thanks to your hints and tips, Very much Appreciated
Robin, I have to echo what Rich D. said below. I'm a newcomer to Olympus digital and the MFT system, having just a Pen-F and several lenses at this time. I'm a 50+ year Nikon shooter and, always will be but, my evolving MFT kit is my 'personal' photography/travel kit. I have watched many of your videos as we sit out the pandemic and they are, without question, the best Olympus education videos. Thank you!
Excellent tips. I love the OK button for accessing the Super Control Panel, but I had no idea that a long press would "zero out" all those adjustments. That's awesome! Thank you, Robin.
I was a Nikon shooter and I am so comfortable with nikon's OK button bring focus point to the center feature, I have been using OMD-EM1MKII for couple of months and the only thing which I couldn't live well with this fantastic camera is there is no quick way to bring the focus point back, after this video i think I am saved, thank you Robin!
Hi Robin. I just wanted to say thank for the terrific videos . I am Olympus camera user and I personally have learned so very much. Bill from Palm Coast,Florida.
Anytime you use focus peaking on an OM-D, regardless if it is auto-triggered when you do manual focus, or after triggering it with a button, as long as it is active, if you press the info button, a pop up menu allows you to change all the params whilst in live view so you easily can choose something that works for the current scene. It is not mentioned in the manual, and any time I have seen a youtube tutorial talk about focus peeking, they always go deep into the menus to adjust peeking. I find this ridiculously silly since it is much more meaningful to do it in live view so that you can actually see how it will work with your current scene.
Thanks, Robin, for more great tips. I didn't know about the 'OK' button reset or the C-AF issue. I couldn't even find the C-AF information in the manual!
In playback, there are two other features I found by playing around. 1 pressing info moves you to the next view mode. Keeping info pressed and turning one of the dials, will allow you to scroll both forwards and backward between viewing modes, so if you have enabled a lot of modes, info, and back turn is a lot quicker than repeatedly hitting info until you get back to the previous mode. 2. When you are zoomed in the arrows only moves the zoom sector, the info button lets you choose by three different modes A) move the zoomed area B) toggle between photos, if you have taken multiple shots with the same composition, you can quickly find the one that has the best exposure on the zoomed-in area C) temp zoom out so that you get an overview whilst you move your zoom window
Excellent stuff again Robin. I've been using Olympus for 10 years plus and never knew about the OK button tips. Been re-assigning the red button to reset the focus point for years...
Nice tips, the Hold OK to reset is a pattern that is not always mentioned on the screen .. it was mentioned on the Highlight/Shadow in the bottom right though.
That OK long press is a very good idea. I imagine that is probably stated somewhere in the manual but you make it so easy. How about some Malaysian outdoor nighttime shooting for your next video?? I need a virtual holiday this year and Kuala Lumpur is exciting. Happy Holidays!
Great tips, thank you for this video Robin! My favorite feature of the omd body is to enable the live view warning of highlights and dark clipping. This way I nail exposure ever time, and know which areas will be clipped, if any - all without having to look at a histogram
Robin this might be a useful note for some users of the EM1MK2 who have customized their dial functions. For example, if you have moved exposure compensation to lever position 2…then, the return to 0 is disabled. Exposure compensation must be assigned to and in lever position 1. Super video, thank you.
I agree completely,… lever function off is a much more secure shooting arrangement. Maybe saying it this way is a little better. It is in choices of assignments available in the dial function menus that one can unintentionally disable the “ok” reset option. In the dial function menu exposure comp + - must be assigned to the lever position 1 setting. It will not matter if the lever function feature is in fact set to on or off. Merritt & Cheryl Johnson
Oops forgot to add: Love the end of video "blooper". How great to be recognized! 😄😄😄 Behind the scene stuff can be fun to see sometimes. Have to admit, I go to your youtube videos more often than I read the blog. 🙈 But both mediums have useful info, so I still read!
I think the world has moved on to video, and also micro-sites like Instagram and twitter now. Full websites are not so popular anymore, hence I do have to adapt and change my way of sharing photography too.
can you make a tips for post production file? especially concerning the sharpness and noise iso and another best setting for this camera? (lightroom). Congratulations continue so your videos are very interesting
Thank you, thank you, thank you Robin, love these tips. The only one I knew about is the CAF mode, because I called Olympus and asked. I shoot mainly birds and shoot exclusively low silent getting 18fps which is fine 98% of the time, however when shooting extremely fast moving birds it would be awesome to have 60fps with continuous focus. Oh well, in my opinion still the best camera on the market. I can handhold my 600 can't do that for very long with any other brand.
Shooting 60fps with full C-AF, I don't think any camera in the world can do that yet. Even at 18fps, Olympus is among the fastest (just behind Sony A9 I think).
Hi Robin, I know your blog for some years now, didn't know that you also have a video channel wich is cool btw. Very helpful tips, especially the "ok" button and the AF + the burst sequential mode. You have another subscriber. :) Keep up the good work! Cheers from Germany
Thank for your tips, I like this vedio and these tips can help me change the setting easily and quickly in EM1-MARK II. Look forward to seeing your next vedio.
Thank you Robin. Another great video and very helpful. A couple of your tips do not work for OMD EM10 II, I have no such button you showed for tip 5. Also, my menu is different. No D2 on menu and no "review default" setting in the menu D. Lastly, to get to the small target focus area via shortcut, I first have to press the info button before I can turn the dial to adjust to the different focus areas. Trying to turn the dial without pressing the info button, just moves the focus point up, down, left or right. Anyway, keep up these videos. They are so helpful. Much appreciated.
Just got my hands on my very own 5mkii today!cant recommend it enough for video shooting!forgot to put different video settings on function 1 and 2!so I had to change every time I switched between full hd 60fps and 120 fps in 720p!my D750 got less than half the video functions although it had cost about 2.2 times more!
@@Rebla01 I only periodically use Custom settings. For example, shooting night sky, I would set M, shutter speed 30sec, ISO1600, F2.8, manual focus, live veiw boost On2, and store those settings in one of the Customs, so I can call it up easily without fumbling in the dark when shooting.
I’ve long known about the re-centring of focal point using the OK button but I didn’t know about the exposure compensation reset trick. Thank you! Now, any tips for getting program shift rest quickly rather than scrolling hopefully until the ‘s’ disappears (and not going straight past it)?
Nope, I have no idea how to quickly reset the Program shift mode. What I do, I turn the mode dial away from P and the come back to P again. That is not necessarily the quickest way but it does work.
Great tips, thanks Robin. Could you tell me...in your blog spot shooting the Malaysian WTA Tennis Open 2017 with an E-M10 Mark II you stayed with mechanical shutter speed of 1/4000. Just wondering why you did not utilise electronic shutter that day, so you could go up to 1/16,000?

Great video. Is there a way of seeing the SCP while using the EVF? I had a problem with my screen with my first OMD EM10 markii (the cable got loose) and I couldn't access the SCP.
When you are shooting through the EVF, press the OK button. That should call up the SCP. I have not tried this in a while, but let me know if it works. No camera near me to verify this at the moment.
Hi Robin, can I present a concern about the continues auto-focus part? For e-m1 (mark I), it is officially announced that the c-af can work effectively up to 9 fps (from firmware ver. 3.0), which only appears at HIGH sequential burst. In fact, the upper limit of L burst rate is only 6.5 fps. In this case, the c-af should work at HIGH burst rate as long as we don't set it to over 9 fps, right?
@@alessandrochiarello2776 enable auto switch on. Meaning that the camera will activate EVF only when you put your eye to it. Press the switch (don't long press, just press), this should enable full time SCP on your LCD when you are not using the EVF.
