    I have been involved with Olympus for more than 10 years, and for almost 5 years I was working officially for Olympus Malaysia as their Product Specialist. Over these years I have dealt and handled hundreds of Olympus OM-D cameras. Each time, I will ensure I change these 10 default camera settings, and I am sharing them here, and my reasons why I modify the settings. These are only suggestions on how to optimize Olympus OM-D cameras that may possibly lead to a better shooting experience, but they are not hard guidelines and you may choose your own preferences. I have also shared a number of these setting changes as OM-D tips over my past many videos, but for these specific 10 settings, I will change them immediately whenever I am handling a new OM-D camera.

    For those of you who made it to the end of the video, don't panic, both myself and my gear survived the violent thunderstorm.
    I found out minutes later (after filming) that trees were falling and properties and cars were damaged, just several miles away from where I was filming. There were flash floods happening around the city, causing traffic jams everywhere.
    Also, a tree fell onto the train tracks and effectively suspended the entire train service for that particular line, which happened to be the one I need to ride to get home. I found alternative means of transport of course.
    However, when the tree fell, the train service was halted immediately and the passengers were reportedly stuck in their respective trains for almost 3 hours before emergency evacuation process started.
    Apart from minor inconveniences, I am just thankful I am ok, and unharmed.

      Hi Robin. I have an old E-M5 Mark 1 which doesn't have anti-shock (0) as an option. What do you suggest I set it to in this case? I shoot landscape and urban.

    • @ottomellar6774

      I was impressed how wet your glasses were!
      I also wear glasses and the only time I really don't like them is in the rain.
      Usually, in the rain my hand is above them and people think I am shielding from the Sun, so people helpfully tell me that the Sun is not shining.
      Hmmmm. I may shoot more one-handed and shift the power button ...

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 роки тому +1

      @@gaoldias try taking a few shots with the normal shutter, do you see any softness/unsharp images? Shutter shock is not that common and you should not have to worry about it. If you are shooting landscape then you can set 1/8s delay for the anti-shock, since your subject is stationary.

    For tip #5, here I give kudos to Panasonic cameras. If I want to set a button to do something else, I simply hold that button for one second and the selection screen pops up automatically, no need for digging inside the menu.

    This is a brilliant video. I made these changes immediately I got my camera years ago. What I don't understand is why these aren't the default settings as they improve the out of camera results you can achieve from these amazing cameras. Most people who got these cameras have been shooting lower quality "out of box" experience compared to most other cameras and maybe this was why they didn't sell too well? I for sure when first using the camera wasn't impressed at all with the results it gave me up until i discovered these settings and changed them. It's like Olympus marketing made them poor out of box shooters from get go, why I have no idea. Great video my friend, well done and thanks for making and sharing this despite the terrifying weather!!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 роки тому +1

      No worries, glad I can share, and glad you found them useful. I think Olympus, or any other camera manufacturers have a very "safe" default camera settings. They are configured for those who may not be too well educated on photography technical controls. But once we know what we want, we do want to customize our camera and optimize it for our own shooting workflow, and I am glad Olympus makes their cameras fully customizable!

    Hi Robin. Another great video, this time with a dramatic ending! My favourite setting for the E-M1 Mk II is the AF Targeting Pad. That being said, I recently had a surprise when it stopped working altogether. Every time I would want to move the AF target, I would get an icon telling me that Touch was off even though the setting said it was on. I finally found out that, according to page 112 of the User Manual, drag operation can be disabled or enabled by double-tapping the monitor while keeping your eye in the viewfinder. I thought it was worth mentioning as others may get the same problem.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Guy, thanks for the kind words. I honestly did not expect the storm to get that much worse, and I was a little worried. Thankfully everything was ok.
      The video was meant to be a quick quide, and as much detail I tried to squeeze in the video is pushing 15 minutes long. People are not interested to watch anything past 10-12 minutes, so I have to decide to exclude some dettails. Unfortunately, you are right, there are some important information, but I guess that can come at later videos.

    For me, one of the most useful videos to date. In addition to the core content, I found myself pausing the video each time a custom menu was displayed and checking your settings against mine, which provided additional value (i.e., permitted me to recheck my settings vs. yours and also provided re-orientation to many settings I don't use frequently). Thanks much.

    Hi Robin, I use the same configuration than you except for the on/off button cause I've always be a two hands user to maximise stability... And I always shoot in raw + jpeg (L-Sf) as memory size and cost is no more a problem for years.
    The other important tweak, for me, is to separate AF and light metering : I make the focus in afc mode with my thumb on AF-L button and keep it memorized when I stop pressing, then shutter button is just half-pressed to memorize exposure before shooting, using exposure compensation if needed or simply switching to Manual mode (witch I rarely do except in rare cases like doing panoramics or using flash).
    Thanks for your sharings, even in stormy times... 👍

    Great job again good sir! I actually laughed about #1. As someone who has his 300 f4 on the camera and it hanging from a cross-shoulder sling most of the time, I really treasure having the on-off lever easy to read, and on top of the camera, so I don’t have to lift it up to turn it on or off, the way I had to with the older Olympus dslrs. The AEL button on my camera is already dedicated to back-button focus, too. I pretty much always use all of the others settings you demonstrated. It was a good review for me.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 роки тому

      No worries, as I said in the beginning we set the camera to suit our own shooting workflow and preferences. I suggested changing one of the buttons, any button to ISO shortcut, since the AEL/AFL was the one clearly shown in the video frame, I chose that.

    great video as ever ... the on/off tipp and the AF targeting pad didn't work on my older OMD EM5.2, but I don't bother ... I love how calm you dealt with the thundersotrm ;)

    I have just seen your video. We never get such crazy rain storms here in Denmark. Very interesting to see and a great video regardless 😉🌱

    Bought EM-10 II last week and exposure meter in manual mode was annoying, so I was shooting mostly in A-mode, but knowing for live view boost to turn off, finally shows me what I want to see! Thanks man!
