    This was a major reason I went to mirrorless for the live view boost mode in flash macro photography as it was terrible and dark on DSLR's when stepped down to f8 and beyond.

    Good tips Robin. Perhaps you could spend a moment explaining to newcomers when and why they would want to use "SN" as a JPEG setting (for example, they intend to email the images or send via messaging app). Also for lens info: I found that predefining all my manual lenses one of the most useful features on my E-M5 MkIII. I have several manual lenses and it's so handy to be able to "select it and have the proper EXIF info tagged with the image, as well as set the focal length of the IBIS.

      I should add, it was chiefly because of you that I bought a brand new Olympus EM 10 Mk 2 just before Christmas from Olympus and it is living up to my expectations perfectly . The menus are not difficult , because your guide to setting them up I studied before the purchase . So, anybody in doubt that a five year old camera with 16 mp cannot produce great images or big prints should look at the videos there online . Save the pennies and get a great lens or two and there will be not much that you can do with it. The key is to work to the strengths of your chosen gear to minimise the weaknesses it may have. And finally, take it with you as often as you can. Thanks again Robin.

    Hi Robin, Always enjoy watching your videos. On the subject of "Live View Boost", I am one of those who use Nikon DSLRs for work and mirrorless for pleasure (Sony, Panasonic, Olympus and Leica). I think in the leica and Panasonic worlds, they use the term "Aperture Preview". They all have the faciility to turn off the "Aperture Preview" (i.e. the same as turning on the "Live View Boost"). That said, Leica T, TL and TL2 are the exceptions. I have both the T and TL2. Just love their design. Unfortunately, there is no way to do the equivalent of "Live View Boost" on them. Quite frustrating when you try to use a flash with them. I know this is not a channel for Leica but just wanted to let you know that we do have some overpriced mirrorless cameras which can't do "Live View Boost" or "Aperture Preview Disabling". Perhaps Leica forgot to ask Panasonic to add that feature for their T/TL bodies.

    Now, a question: I cannot seem to take a high res picture of the moon. Settings are proper, shutter is pressed, camera thinks for a while and then tells me that it is unable to take the high res shot. What?...

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 роки тому

      No worries, glad you found the videos useful. I am assuming you used a very long lens shooting the moon. And your high res shot was set to hand-held mode? When there is too much lens movement (more extreme the longer your lens is), the pixels cannot be aligned correctly, hence error.

    Mr Robin, first of all thanks for all good information about Olympus.
    I have olympus omd em10 mark iii and I always think night pictures become over exposure. I always put ev - 1, or - 1.5. What do you think about it? Any way to change the exposure automatically in another way when it becomes darker?
    I planing go to Malaysia later this year

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 роки тому

      Thanks, and I am glad you found my videos useful.
      The reason the photos appear underexposed is the metering averaging out the exposure calculated within your frame (depending on which setting you used), and since night time, there is more blacks, the camera thought it was too dark and tried to overcompensate by raising the exposure more than necessary. Perfectly normal. As long as you understand this, just adjust the exposure compensation as you have figured out accordingly to get the desired outcome, which can be previewed even before you shoot. That is the reason the exposure compensation was included in the camera.

    When would you use S-OVF instead of live view boost?

    • @Centauri27
      @Centauri27 3 роки тому +1

      S-OVF and Live View Boost are very similar and can be considered virtually interchangeable I think. I read about the difference at one point, but now I can't remember the exact details. I believe S-OVF gives a more muted representation, like a real OVF, whereas Live View Boost still looks like an "electronic viewfinder". Try both for yourself.

      This can be tricky. You have to input the focal length that matches your current zoom setting in your lens before taking the picture. Thus, you have to re-input the focal length info each time you have adjusted your zoom lens's focal length before you are taking the picture.

    I learned something, even though I knew it already (in theory): Live View Boost can be set differently for different shooting modes! I always wondered why I didn't see the exposure settings in manual mode. My main problem in certain situations is the histogram: It is coupled to what we see on the screen, not to the image after taking it; so, if I want to see the histogram distribution in the final image (without taking it), Live View Boost has to be off!
    On my cameras, light balance is always set to "Sunny", as I'm shooting RAW and this setting gives me a "reference" view for the colors. Nice side effect (even though this should be acchieved through the Keep Warm Color setting too): Sunsets and blue hour look right all the time … ;-) Can be changed in RAW processing afterwards when needed, but most of the time I'm fine with this fixed WB setting. (Old color slide film shooter sitting in front of the screen. ;-))
