J-rock and J-metal are a never ending rabbit hole of amazing bands and exceptional musicians. Since I started down it with BAND-MAID in December 2019 I had this constant sense that Japan has seriously been holding out on the rest of us for decades. The nerve! I hope you enjoy the ride. xD

Been a big fan of them for many years now! And yes they really play around with many genres over the years. Pop, funk, jazz, rock, electronica, metal. They really can do it all. I hope you check out more songs from them :) I'd recommend their song Gold Dash

Thanks Sabina - watching these ladies always makes me smile. Their energy is definitely infectious and I’m sure you’d enjoy their live performances too. The core of the band are actually in their early 30s, having started in 2009, but the pink haired lead singer on this one (Angelina) is a fairly recent addition - she was about 19 when this was released.

So glad you've checked this band out! They've been my favourite for many years! Insane skills, incredibly varied and creative output, full of joy and life, and with one of the most amazing stage shows going!
If you've got an open musical mind you can check out anything else from them, their output includes genres like prog metal, prog rock, pop rock, party rock, latin jazz funk, speed metal, EDM, nu metal, cute pop songs, 70's disco...the list goes on! They've even written jingles for a number of Japanese adverts and their track "Don't Let Me Down" was the closing theme for the anime Dragonball Kai. They're also one of the hardest touring bands in Japan regularly performing 200 shows a year pre-COVID, and they've managed to fit writing an album in every year since 2015 as well.
Regarding ages, they're mostly in their mid 30's. Drummer and bassist are 35 (born in 1986), keyboardist is 34 (born 1987), guitarist is 33 (born 1988), with the pink haired singer the youngest at age 20 (born 2001). They also have a drummer (who didn't appear in this video as she was off for maturnity leave) who is about 25. The pink haired singer and drummer who didn't appear are relatively recent additions to the band both having joined in late 2018/early 2019.
I also whole heartedly recommend any live footage of them, I see suggestions for TAMASHII from others and that would be excellent. Hunting Summer is always a blast live too and there's about 5 different versions of it from different concerts on UA-cam.

All four of the musicians in this video (Hana on drums, F Chopper Koga on bass, Oreo Reona on keyboards and Tomo-zo on guitar) have also been involved in a side project called DOLL$BOXX, along with a lead singer known as Fuki (from Unlucky Morpheus, etc.).
That band has a bit more of a Hard Rock focus.
Probably their most WTF? music video is the one for 'Take My Chance'.
Definitely a few surprises with that one. It starts as a kind of spoof of Idol girl groups, and builds from there. : )

Good Club mix. Hana (the Drummer not only has excellent drum skills, but her voice is to die for... and she does growls...!!! Update: 11/1/22: I just saw a video with their original front person (Arrmy (pronounced Ahhmee)), she and the current (Angelina (Angie)) could have been sisters! The interesting thing I have discovered in my reading about GS, Angie was only 17 years old when she started with them, and I think this was her first video with them. Angie is an amazing talent and has an absolutely beautiful clean voice. She also screams/growls, I don't believe she plays an instrument, yet; but that might change, or just be wrong. These ladies are ENERGY Personified!
1/11/23 Update: just watched this again, and really enjoyed watching you "dance" along with the music. The guitarist on the right is Tomo-Zo, the Bassist on the left is Koga, and the Keyboardist is Oreo Reona and they are ALL excellent talent. I read somewhere that Tomo-zo and Kanami from BandMaid are contemporaries of each other, meaning that one may have actually taught the other, but I don't remember which way that went. I do know that Kanami taught Miku Kobato (Founder and 2nd vocals of BandMaid) how to play guitar, or at least I read that somewhere. I love both bands, they are like musical crack cocaine... and almost as addictive. Hana is the oldest in the band, I don't know her age presently, but when I first started watching their videos, I read that she was 26, then. Young to me (I'm 64, 65 in March 2023), but age is just a number, or so I've been told.

Gacharic Spin occupy a unique place in Japanese pop music; they are not like any other band I have heard. See some of the many concert videos to understand their over-the-top live performances. In addition to the high energy music in Mind Set, the lyrics are about having the strength to reject the constraints and expectations that Japanese culture imposed on young women.
Another video, I Wish I, from the same album is even more astonishing and carries the message that “the world is very beautiful”, if you approach it with the right attitude, and it’s up to you to find your harmonious place in it.
Three more all-female Japanese bands to check out are BAND-MAID (any live video), Nemophila (a new band with one album out and many wonderful cover songs of their favorite bands), and Hanabie (four young ladies who graduated college this month).

These girls jam with so much energy it's crazy! They are originally from a band called Doll $ Boxx that are a banging metal band. This is the same band members playing different instruments and experimenting with different styles. Great reaction! If you want to hear an all women rock band from Japan react to Band Maid Domination live official video. You won't be disappointed! 👍😎😉

I'll give a very condeced introduction.
They are actually not as young as you would think. Angelina 1/3, the singer with the pink hair is 20 years old but the rest of the band are quite experienced musicians. Gacharic Spin started in 2009 when basist F Choppa Koga (they use kinda silly band names lol) was in a band called Pink Panda where she was super unhappy and was about to quit music all together. Lucky for us, Hana, the drummer and her ex classmate convinced her to start a band together. There has been a lot of line up changes with drama and tragedy, but it ended up with a situation where Hana and keyboard player Oreo Reona doing most of the vocals. They didn't like to have a statick band so they hired "performance": dancers and hype girls. Eventually Angelina 1/3 ended up to be a great lead singer and lyricist so she was promoted to one of the lead singers. I haven't introduced Tomo-zo, yet, she does the lead guitar. While Hana plays drums in this video, she'd a multi-instrumentalist and often plays rhytm guitar. The main drummer is yuri, but she's on maternaty leave.

Hi from someone well down the J-rock rabbit hole, what a palace of delights it is! Mindset and Gacharic Spin are just two of the treasures on offer, you should check out Doll$box (Gacharic Spin plus another vocalist), especially Take My Chance. More girl power and more of the marvellous contrast between how these women appear when they take the stage and what they produce in terms of musicianship and performance skills. My personal preference is for Band-Maid, who have a seemingly endless supply of energy, melody, power and talent. Their MVs are exquisitely produced, but their live shows feature their playing skills even more. Try Domination or Warning as a first taste. If you liked Mindset a lot, prepare to be overwhelmed and captivated! (the obsession part I will leave up to you...)

You should react to the Japan's premier Math Rock group (admittedly a cool version of Math) tricot. They admittedly have a male drummer. They have been playing for a similar length of time to GS. They will be touring Europe in September, and I have a ticket. Here is their latest MV ua-cam.com/video/JCm99M7FtFE/v-deo.html Japan has such a diverse range of bands who are not afraid to bend genres - apart from the recommendations on the postings I can see here, also awesome are King Gnu, Necry Talkie, 88 KASYO Junrei, Polkadot Stingray, Maximum the Hormone, Atarashii Gakko, AiNA the End, Wagakki Band, Sokinanaru, CHAI, Senri Kawaguchi, Ano, Kaho Nakamura - the list could be endless

Japanese language is strange for singing. The language has this thing about all syllables having to be the same length, so without many truncated or protracted syllables it becomes staccato like, sound like raps. But still cool. If you are moving into japanese, you can't get around Babymetal. I recommend "Megitsune", my favorite.

Nice thing about being Japanese is that you look like a teenager when you are actually in your thirties.
The only young one was Angie the pink haired singer who just turned twenty.
Now that you’ve made it through mindset and appreciated the bands creativity, you need to watch
“I wish I” the other video off of this most recent album. Mindset should have brought your power levels up to the point where you can appreciate I wish I.
    Hope you continue to enjoy

This has a feel of Gangham Style by Psy, some similarities in the style of music. Slightly avant garde in parts. This though allows the musicians to shine. I didn’t think I’d like this. But…I did. Great music pick Sabina.
