I'm currently 62 and I remember back when I was in my early 20s thinking that I really like music (couldn't play it other than an LP or a cassette) and that I really want to continue to find current music, as it changed through the decades, that I liked and not be stuck in the 70s/80s (Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Deep Purple). I'm glad I made that promise to myself because I've found so much great music through the decades. For a while, I was listening to classica and opera, now I'm listening to Jinjer, Lovebites and Nightwish and now Gacharic Spin. I'm finding that these reaction channels are great sources of new and innovative and interesting music because like you, I'm exposed to such a variety that I would never have found.
This is a little bit late maybe you've already found them but I listened to the same music growing up that you did. So you definitely definitely definitely need to check out Band Maid.
Lessee if I can give a clear and comprehensive but not overwhelming overview of the band (pronounced like Gotcha-Rick Spin). First they’ve undergone a lot of lineup changes and some tragedy. Bassist Koga and Drummer Hana are the original members. They went to high school together. Guitarist Tomo-zo is their 2nd guitarist, replacing the original. The original singer Armmy left due to health issues and eventually passed away a few years later. Hana the drummer took over vocals, and they also added Oreo the keyboardist as another vocalist. Because Hana as vocalist was stuck behind the drumkit, they decided to have dancers up front on stage to be the “frontwomen” and connect with the audience. There’s been a few different dancers over the years, but Angelina (pink hair) is the most recent one, and she’s actually become more of a vocalist. Now that there isn’t a true dancer anymore since Angelina is doing more singing, Hana has moved from behind the drumkit to rhythm guitar, and they have a new drummer Yuri (who wasn’t present in this video due to pregnancy iirc). Hana still drums on occasion during concerts, but is mostly on rhythm guitar now.
Their image has changed over the years, but they are known for wild costumes and an insane stage show. Recently they’ve become a tiny bit more subdued, but that’s only in comparison to what they used to be like (I’m talking dresses with built in flashing lights and pinwheels that shoot sparklers, or dressed up as a hamburger complete with ketchup and mustard pigtails in their hair).
The non-dancer portion of the band (Koga on bass, Hana on drums, Oreo on keys, and Tomo-zo on guitar) have a side project with Fuki (vocalist for symphonic speed metal band Unlucky Morpheus, and many other bands/projects). This side project is called Doll$boxx and they have two albums together. Take the pop funk of Gacharic Spin and blend it with power metal, and you’ve got some idea.
Have fun exploring more of Gacharic Spin. I think their recent stuff is their best, and they’ve really found their sound; their early stuff is bit more chaotic and unfocused in my mind, but the creativity and musicianship can’t be denied
Man. There is so much to keep straight. I don't know how all you guys remember all the connections and names etc. I guess it will come with time.
@@PrymalChaos We all started from scratch. Gachapin has one of the most chaotic career indeed - and they even stars in a movie, the hilarious and very rockish zombie movie "METALCA" ua-cam.com/video/GZa1dBW5s8k/v-deo.html . I recommand their live performances!
Ga Cha Rik (reek) Spin (Speen) ARGH! I think I'm saving this one for the next reactor I have to update... lol. When Angelina (Angie) started she was only 17 years old... But she looks almost like Arrmmy's (Ahmee) twin, but a bit younger. Angie has a magnificent clean voice, but can scare the crap out of you when screaming/growling. All of them together are ENERGY Personified!
I wish I is another awesome song to listen to. It's a song about wanting people to accept those who are different. And it goes harder with Hana and Angela 1/3 both growling in it.
Yeah. I added it to my video short list. 😂
Yet more proof that Japanese musicians are not just almost inevitably very skilled musicians but also know how to have fun and feel joy when playing their music. Reminds me of early 80's post-Punk, like Talking Heads.
Clean, crisp, perfect recording. What a nice thing, excellent musicianship. I wish more bands could pull this off. They've been around since 2009 and have had a bunch of lineup changes especially where vocals are concerned. One iteration had them with two dancers to rev up the audience because the vocals were being done by the instrumentalists. This is my favourite lineup. A related offshoot project is DOLL$BOXX (this band plus a few more members), also a fun band.
Doll$boxx more specifically is this version of Gacha but with a different lead vocalist. They have a music video on UA-cam for every song in their discography. Have fun
These girls are awesome!! Interesting how most of the Japanese bands have so many side projects that are so good. Great reaction!!!
Mind blowing talent.
Yes! Gacharic Spin are one of my favorites and I've been hoping you'd get around to them. Easily in my top uhhh... I forget how to count. They have a complex history that I don't feel qualified to relate. There are plenty who are and will I'm sure. Other end of the spectrum from other favorites including Band-Maid, Nemophila, and MTH.
Their live shows are madness and chaos. Playing keyboards strapped to each other's backs, Hana (drums) playing cowbell attached to a helmet on her head, Tomo-Zo (guitar) wearing an illuminated witch's hat, Oreo (keys) dressed as a cheeseburger. These things only scratch the surface. Hana is a Swiss-army knife and plays whatever she wants, moving from drums to guitar to plastic ruler and toothbrush.
I'd suggest recent lineup live performances like "Redline" live 2019 or "Tamashii" live 2019. In "Tamashii" Hana plays drums along with their new drummer, Yuri.
Thanks for the fun!
^^^^^ all true! Read it again slowly, and visualize… lest I have to post link of proof for each!
😂

A lot of wisdom here. Getting into japanese music the past 3 years has done the exact same thing for me, it's great. Keep on with Gacharic Spin, they have been around over 10 years, countless amazing songs
They may be my new obsession. I won't rest until everyone has heard them. 😂😂
In that case......
Welcome back to the Music Exploration scene. I'm happy to walk the journey with you too. Looking forward to what you find.
Thanks mate! Glad to be here!
The new lead singer and 2nd drummer are in their very early 20s. The rest of the band are in their mid-thirties. There have been several lineups since they formed in 2009. The older members, the drummer, bass, and guitarist are from the original 2009 lineup. The original lead singer left because of illness at the end of 2011. They added a keyboardist/vocalist at the beginning of 2012.
They are VERY eclectic, and the influences have changed with personnel changes.
Thanks John.
Sadly the original lead vocalist passed away shortly after she left the band
Yes the drummer (Hana) can sing. You can check out Gacharic Spin's song "Tamashii" live where she sings even more while playing drums. Or you can simply react to the band DOLL$BOXX with the song "Take My Chance" to see her shine even more. DOLL$BOXX is basically Gacharic Spin with another singer (Fuki from Unlucky Morpheus).
PS: The second prononciation of Gacharic Spin was correct. It's like "Gatcha Rick Spin"
Thank you!
A lot of people miss the meaning of this song because it seems so happy. In reality the song is about a young bullied girl contemplating suicide (on the overpass). In the end she prays "please let me live and die when I'm supposed to". "I want to live". Look at Angies face until she cuts her hair off. Resentment, anger, sense of hopelessness, trodden down. Let's call this video a sanitized version. However on their "I Wish" about people trying to put you down the aggression goes to 11.
Thanks for pointing this out. I suspected as much, but it adds so much dimension to the song.
I discovered and listened to this band like ten years ago, then lost track of them. I was floored back then over their musicianship, and the fact that the drummer was doing lead vocals...absolutely insane.
I'm glad they're still chugging along, and I now have a bunch of catching up to do!
Nice!
They are all in their mid 30’s. Except for the lead singer who is 20. I would recommend their song I Wish I. It shows off their heavier side.
Should be posting that one this week.
Female Japanese bands are the country's next great export after Anime and Sushi. There's just such an eclectic mix of flavors and such a uniquely cool spin put on foreign influences screened through a Japanese filter.
Been where you are: wasn't feeling new music for quite a while until I stumbled on this new generation of bands (also through Band Maid, just two years ago), and it was just so much more than most of the staid, paint-by-numbers J-Pop and rock I'd heard on and off over the years. It was then I realized that there was a whole generation of new Japanese bands that were really kicking it hard.
So loving the opportunity this pandemic has given us to find new and exciting music.
Couldn't agree more. I am actually excited to get back in the studio and create!
Not really, japanese bands are a niche outside of japan.
The only bands that really are internationally known are like x japan, one ok rock and babymetal if you can consider them a band.
I am sorry but japan has always had great cinema nd literature.
These girls are amazing. Incredible live performances. I think of Faith No More when I listen to them.
Band-Maid is my number 1 band, but GS are my number 2. Love these girls.
Awesome.
I completely agree with your speech about people that "listen" to music and people who "seek out" new and amazing music. As a musician I fall into the later and am of the discussed age as well. As a young parent in the late 80's early 90's music was a connection with our kid that moved and progressed with him and kept us discovering new instead of getting "stuck" in the 80's like so many. Now he's a multi instrumentalist way more talented than I'll ever be:)!! I cherish music for everything it can do!! It's a connection with people you've never even met!!! KEEP IT UP!! Thanks for the knowledge and understanding!!
Thank you for that insight. I am finding similar stories all over the place. There seems to be a network of people who seek out new music and it is highly refreshing.
A perfect and just song.
amazing and fantastic.😆👍
They're pretty good. I've never heard of them before, but I like them! Great review!
Nice! It's my dream to guide people towards new music.
Well you have done it now.. Prepare for a Red bull/Monster ride.. Love this band.. So much energy.. Enjoy the ride.. Best wishes from France
😂😂 I am ready!
@@PrymalChaos Cool. I will be watching.. Enjoy your reactions and breakdowns..
Great first reaction and this band is very underrated but the more you dig the more you find just how great this band is. Gacharic Spin is a group that is best described as loosely contained chaos on stage and all the musicians are some of the best in Japan. Gacharic Spin is one of my favorite bands. The band was formed in 2009 by bassist F Chopper Koga after leaving her first band, Pink Panda. Koga was looking for musicians for a new band and asked her friend from HS the drummer Hana first. At this time, Hana was playing bass in another band and switched to drums (she is a multi-instrumentalist). Together they found guitarist Eita and singer Armmy. After a few concerts on their first tour, Eita left the band and they needed to find another guitarist so the recruited Tomo-Zo, who was the guitarist from the band Eu Phoria, that also included the keyboardist Oreo, had just split up so Tomo-Zo could start at Gacharic Spin. Oreo supported the band with keyboard at concerts in 2010 and 2011 until becoming a full member. Singer Armmy left the band due to health issues (she later passed away). They have also had a number of support members, mainly for dancing around, sometimes playing instrument. In 2019 they switched up the lineup and Hana switched from drums to rhythm guitar, added drummer Yuri and new dance/vocalist Angelina 1/3 (pink) hair and she was 17 at the time, she's now 20).
Very concise yet covering everything important. Nice.
I really need to see some of these crazy live performances I keep hearing about.
I own about. 3000 vinyls and not-as-many CDs, but stopped years ago buying new stuff. Just some very few things like Amy Winehouse or Amy MacDonald. This changed some years ago - thanks to UA-cam. I rediscovered the Japanese music world and noticed, that Sadistic Mika Band, Japan X and Ryuichi Sakamoto were long gone and now i have CDs of Band Maid, Baby Metal, Scandal, Sheena Ringo, Rekishi (レキシ), Ladybaby, Gacharic Spin, PassCode, Bridear, ..
I still have a ways to go in my rabbit hole, but I’m definitely chipping away at it. Yeah think I’m due for another Band-Maid reaction.

I hope you will do Tamashii live reaction. They are using 2 drum kits for that one. Hana the drummer is multi instrumentalist and great show case how talented she is and how she hears sound in a different way is her cover of Smells like teen spirit with household items.
Double reaction: Tamashii live, followed by Tamashii played on toy instruments. Can’t hide when the drums are only ounces and inches… but melodica and great bass tone are forever

+1 to both of these and great idea suggesting the toy instrument version as a double-header.
Exactly what you said!
When I discovered Gacharic Spin with this song several months ago, it sparked a renewed interest in discovering new music. Japan certainly is the lode stone for that, currently, and I think GS are amongst the very best, in their current lineup with Angie front and centre. She certainly has brought a new level to their performance.
Their live stuff is so energetic too. I have a live version of mindset uploaded and scheduled for release soon.
I recommend checking out "I Wish I" next.
Perhaps next Japanese reaction you can do Ningen Isu. You could pick any of their top songs. Though Namahage, The Color Out of Space, and Heartless Scat are the most popular for reactors.
Edit: As for non Japanese, maybe you could try Iron Swan by The Sword?
Oh my, yes.
I'll take a look!
Ever since I got hooked on Band-Maid I've found so many great new bands from Japan. New to me anyway. And not just the all female bands. It's just amazing how many there are there. But also BRATS, Polkadot Stingray, Glim Spanky, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, and more I can't think of at the moment. All totally different but all so good! It's even led me to find bands from other countries like Elephant Gym (Taiwan) and Voice of Baceprot (Indonesia).
Tim here, to steer you wrong again. Elephant Gym, a sibling / HIghschool trio from Taiwan that won international fusion awards straight out of school, are awesome enough. But the show I want to be at? Well the best elephant gym?, is a drunk elephant gym

Thanks for the suggestions!
What about Rolling Quartz from Deagu , South Korea
@@kevinshaw3675 Yes! Good one too!
You said some great stuff there! I've never been through that phase of not liking new music but I understand how it happens to other people and, yes, bands like Gachapin and Band-Maid are the catalyst for older people to get back into new music. Well put!
Thank you!
The spearhead of innovation in rock music are Japanese bands, most of them made up of only girls. Gacharic Spin is amazing.
Agreed.
I was lucky enough to see Gacharic Spin in Houston, along with LadyBaby. It was a great show. I don't know what's going on in Japan to churn out all these amazing female musicians and bands, but I'm so happy for it.
Jealous!
Wow, that was amazing. I'm gonna have to climb out of the foxhole and dive down this rabbithole. Cool.
Hahah. It's definitely doesn't lack impact. Great song.
The story i read was way back, bass - F Chopper Koga was in another band but was discouraged and thinking of quitting. Some said she should start her own band. She agreed but only if her best bud Hana (drums) came along.
Around 3 years ago they reimagined the band by adding in Drummer Yuri and vocalist Angelina. In some recent songs Hana has moved up front (from drums) to vocals and guitar.
The original members are around 32 years old ( Dr. Hana -- Gt. Tomo-Zo -- Ba. F Chopper Koga -- Kb. Oreo) The newbies Angelina and Yuri are around 25 years old
As mentioned below. Tamashii is a great song of theirs. Unique in that it has two drummers playing at same time. Another song i like from them is Redline.
born '86, '86, '86, '88 (Guitar TomoZo), '95 (i believe, drummer Yuri), and xmas 2001!!! "Angelina 1 of 3" (3 because she's japanese/spanish/filipino) was recruited from the halls of her junior year in HS, 17th bday 2018, they explicitly need infusions of "17 year old's Power" ! Ok then...
I"m picking up what you're putting down about that Saturday Morning Cartoon Energy. Yeah, its the feeling of anticipation, excitement, not having a care in the world, just living in the moment while eating your Cocoa Puffs dude.
Nailed it!
It’s groovy to!! Haha
Gacharic spin is one of my favorite of all time. So many great albums. You will never pin down their sound they seemingly reinvent themselves every album. They do it all. Rock funk metal jazz pop psychedelic space punk . Very high level musicianship. I wish sometimes reactors would check out some of their early stuff such as
Winner
Gangdang beat
Imawoiketeru Spring 2013
Redline
For real 70’s funk fun generation gap
To name a few
Winner changed my life... and it was a damn good change :)
@@cbilljones glad to hear it
Love that song
Very inspirational
What about Lock On.
Others have covered the band's history in detail, but I'll add that the "Saturday cartoon" vibe is a result of the widespread influence that anime has in Japanese culture. Also, funk bass has been popular for a long time in Japan, and it isn't uncommon to hear a bassist add some slaps and pops while playing the root, or full out break into a funk solo like KOGA is prone to do. (BTW, KOGA's influence is Les Claypool of Primus). And finally, the Japanese music industry was criticized for slavishly copying Western music styles in the 70's and 80's so it decided to adopt an attitude that encouraged more creativity (and some quality control), which is why outrageously bizzare but extremely talented acts like Maximum the Hormone, Gacharic Spin and the Wagakki Band were not only able to get started but also find a large enough audience to survive.
Ok! Awesome. That's great insight. Thank you! Also I was definitely feeling Primus, but just never got around to saying it.. (I think. Can't remember)
Angie has a smile that could melt a man.
It's just joy!
Next Has to be Asterism for sure.Mind Blowing trio.
Love ur take on music. I'm 72 & always look for something new & have spent the last couple of years listening to mainly female rock/metal bands & love the youth reinventing rock. Watched several japanese female bands including gacharic spin & loved them all. Finally got to band-maid, My favorite. It's not just japan. the warning (mexico), voice of boceprot (indonesia), rolling quartz (s. Korea), plush (us). Young female rockers are kicking it worldwide. Rock n roll ain't dead , it's just coming from different directions. Not all female (2/3) but, kinda like me some nova twins (england). Great reactions. I've watched a few of urs lately & u do an excellent job. Thnx so much.
Thanks Glen! I appreciate you watching!
One thing I've noticed listening to Japanese music - that high energy is real common all over the place, whatever the style of music. This song's obviously an extreme, but it feels like stuff is generally higher tempo, and all the instruments are way more likely to do bursts of interesting stuff that I'm used to seeing as "technical", instead of settling for something simple most of the time
That technicality seems way more normal than in stuff I'm used to hearing - outside genres like metal or math rock where the speed and complexity is "the point" to a large extent, and something to show off about when you can do it. It feels like we're getting a lot more slap bass in pop now, but still it's all a lot slower than the speed these guys absolutely send it on the regular
If this is the kind of thing kids grow up hearing and learning to play in Japan, no wonder they're turning out so many kickass bands. I learned grunge songs when I picked up the guitar, I dunno if I could have handled this
Watch out for that hot mic during the ad break mate ;)
Oh! I normally mute it. 😂
Thank you for your insight! Everything you said seems to jive with what I've been seeing in my limited experience.
Fantastic band that's been around for quite a while (2009). Excellent musicians and amazing performers, their live shows are crazy and I love them so much! :) Thanks for your reaction and I'm hoping for more! Perhaps "I wish I" next?
I wish I is done, will upload in the next few days..

Well next you have to do "I Wish I" and "Gold Dash"
(Gotcha Rick) Spin. I describe them as George Clinton and P-funk meet Sybil (Multiple personalities). If I were you I'd react to an older one followed by their other incarnation "Doll $ Boxx"
+1 Doll$Boxx. First time reactions to "Take my Chance" are almost cliche, but that's because they're fun!
great video! I've been a fan of gacharic spin for a long time now but really fell out of listening to new music in general a few years ago and just decided on a whim to check out this album last night, and it has seriously made me feel so re-energized about seeking out new music again, like you were saying. I've never checked out band maid before but I'll give them a listen!
I could say so many positive things about gacharic spin (and often do, to anyone who will listen) but I think it really speaks to how talented they are that they make me so excited to look for new stuff and see what how much more cool stuff is out there that I haven't heard yet. thanks for the thoughtful commentary!
Thanks for watching! I have a reaction to their new song scheduled for 3 or 4 days from now. Keep your eyes peeled!
You looked straight at the camera and called me out!, but I’m too sick to write the usual novel… drummer Hana is the multi instrumentalist arranger genius, had her 20th anniversary industry party in 2019, signed when she was 13. Bass FCK, F Chopper Koga is the organizer/heart, high school and bands with Hana (and BabyMetal drummer). Guitar TomoZo is hard working committed to her craft, loves wacky Judy & Mary, was on guitar backing boy bands on tv by age 16. Each frustrated with state of art in 2009, got together. Keyboard eccentric Oreo officially in in 2012 (from TomoZo’s prev band).
They’ve explicitly always used “17yr old power” to keep themselves fresh, since adding a 15yr old dancer in 2013. Angie is the 4th such “performer”, the third has keyboard skills, Angie is becoming “lead singer” (that all sing except Koga). Angie joined at 17, HS junior, in 2019, mid album cycle. This (latest) album tho def has her influence, “hip” is not wrong. 19 in this vid, In Japanese terms she became an adult by turning 20 (approx xmas).
Def try 2012, they were insanely productive then including screen capture work for anime, a zombie movie, toured Europe, continuing an album a year, (filmed) behind the scenes coaching “idol group” AKB48 “how to rock(&play)”, PLUS the infamous Doll$Boxx project with singer Fuki of Unlucky Morpheus.
Here’s an early vid, the introduction of Oreo and the first two dancer/performers, very different, “Next Stage” 2013 ua-cam.com/video/FPHOhw-ArKs/v-deo.html
, most recently also performed with two drummers, a la Tamashii (“Soul”), see links in other comments…
They literally have toured, but then gone onstage in veils with only Guitar TomoZo talking or singing, the TomoShow. She’s hilarious, their 2013 dvd delicious includes her bit roasting the other band members. And they’re all comedians, lots of slapstick in their shows
My fav TomoZo guit solo; she doesn’t always get love from shred-lovers? But she does from actual shredders… Doll$Boxx - Merrily High Go Round, tell EVH to suck it 🤪 ua-cam.com/video/LzCWuLu-Jq0/v-deo.html
Here doing their annual job of hosting Takayoshi Ohmura’s bday/Xmas concert; this is the 2017 encore with KamiBand (BabyMetal) and GS all onstage at once doing Judas Priest; Ohmura’s the Japanese Yngvie, and the guy far screen left is HIS teacher, GOAT (that tone! and expression!), who sadly died days after this… TomoZo gets out shredded, but she can hang, and they literally hired her band to entertain, when they already had two worlds-best shredders, Respect. ua-cam.com/video/wgTh6wZjtGE/v-deo.html
Oh, and how could you get theu, without knowing TomoZo “came out” in 2013?! Until then she’d insisted she was a 17yrold pirate witch, but with this song revealed her true identity as a 100,000,014 yr old alien, finally satisfied after scouring the galaxy for the ultimate popRock band … “Final Na Fantasy”, part of the Fantasy series where she sings a song per album… ua-cam.com/video/bsmn-YUPRX8/v-deo.html
Obviously follow that with 2016’s instrumental about traffic jams at her planet, “Nicorin(planet) Commuter Rush”, here live 2018 ua-cam.com/video/VXAB83r0lbQ/v-deo.html
Musically, compare that directly to BandMaid’s Onset, which came out soon after. For that matter, check Doll$Boxx vid Take my chance, and consider that BandMaid was formed on the “gap” (servant maids doing masterful rock) concept approx 6months later, hmmm (note: neither were the first, Saki(Nemophila) was wearing maid outfits in band Mixx in … 2011?)
That's the short version? :) Love it.

@@PrymalChaos J-Rock is a deep, vast rabbit hole. Bring lots of snacks!
The band was founded in 2009, but its core solidified in early 2012, (Koga: bass, Hana: drums & vocals, Tomo-Zo: guitar & vocals and Oreo: keyboards & vocals) since then they have had many minor changes, but they have shaped the character of their live performances.
To understand the evolution of the band it is more enlightening to look at the interpretation through the years of a song like "Hunting Summer".

@@PrymalChaos Shame we won't see the reaction for that!
Check out their song "I Wish I" and be even more amazed!
This is exactly what I would expect if Primus was a female Japanese band in the 2000s. Straight BANGER!
Primus was definitely on my mind and I never got a chance to spit it out.
I agree with you about music. Had pretty much given up on listening to music. Around 3ish years ago up pops a suggestion here on UA-cam. Baby Metal. Cute Japanese girls. What can go wrong. That started the slide down the rabbit hole. Shortly there after two more bands popped up. Aldious and Band-Maid
Fast forward to today where i now have almost 500 albums from around 140 unique bands on Apple Music. Almost all of them Japanese female or at least female vocals bands.
They have all brought much joy and happiness to my ears.
yup. cute prodigies. oh look, LisaX is playing in an ensemble. who are they? members of Cyntia, Mary's Blood, who are from Destrose (that really exploded!!!), and of course TomoZo, my first fav from them, and MurataTamuTam, who later reeled Saki into Nemophila... That was 2017, LisaX was 11... fast forward, Tomo's my fav creator, Kanami's got the biggest shot, Saki's gone international (Amahiru international supergroup, check it), and LisaX Band has comember Hazuki w Nemophila, Yoyoka (prodigy drummer) has arrived, BillySheehan on releases by both LisaX Band AND KanaeiYoyoka band, etc... Found BabyMetal days later (YouTub algo-rhythm), to learn later that TomoZo bandmates GS/DB's Hana & Koga went to HS w BabyMetal's Hideki Aoyama, which led to GS hosting Takayoshi Ohmura's (fellow BM-KamiBand members) annual BDay/XMas concert... and he also jammed at an ESP guitar conference in China, with LisaX-album-featured Chinese prodigy Yoyo... Damn you cute prodigies and your Kawaii Metal, just take my money! Destrose of course leads to Lovebites, FateGear, Mardelas, Octaviagrace, everything Ibuki has done (Disqualia, w Hazuki of Nemophila, Narumi rocks, they went to Rami, of Aldious, it's all connected!). Bridear must've been a YouTub recommendation, but a great one; they now have ex Telecide drummer Natsumi, and guitarist Ayumi who was on a later year's ensemble (Naon No Yaon, by ShowYa (esp singer Keiko Terada, also "Teradaric Spin", & Scandal), World Guitar Girls' Collection, annually organized by Saki since 2017...). Soooo much to track down if you have too much time like i do...
Onward and upward! Gotta keep the passion alive. It always pains me to see people who are in their 40s and still obsessed with the three bands they loved when they were 14.
It's fine to appreciate those bands, especially for the nostalgia. but if you take the time to branch out, there is so much joy to be found.
Bravo Sir. Your comments about how Band Maid and other Japanese bands have reinvigorated our listening enjoyment is spot on. I was just listening to the same old bands and the same old songs time after time again and again. Since one day I forgot to turn off UA-cam's Autoplay and I first heard Band Maid's Freedom, then Onset. I've been hooked. I'm now seeking out new music from reactors I have come to trust such as you are becoming, like Champ, Tank, Chase, Ryan, Wave Potter and others. One thing you will notice, most of the reactors I trust are MUSICIANS. I don't need someone who watches a video and goes, "Oh, yeah that's good" and the video is over. I want someone who is going to break down the music, explain things, point out things I might not have noticed. Especially with my damaged hearing. So I find myself looking for these new to me bands and trustworthy reactors for my listening pleasure.
Oh if you haven't heard of Mary Spender, giver her a listen. Especially both version of Sultan's of Swing she does. The Metal one and the new one she just released.
Thank you for your kind words and the recommendation!
I was going to type something here, but your ending monologue captured to a tee what was bouncing around my brain, so I'll just put the word "EXACTLY". Thanks man! 🕊
Thanks Jeremy!
Ga.cha.ric spin. Please…
Hana, the drummer writes the music. She is derivative of the world. She went to Tokyo rock and roll high school with the bassist, koga who was a gavure idol .
That a jr high bikini model.
They decided to make a band for apr stunt and they needed a bass player. So she learned bass while Hana was learning everything, including all the instruments.
Seven years later the of koga’s band pink panda decided to change their style which didn’t really require a bass. Koga hooked up with Hana and then pulled in armmy and her sister eida. Before they had chance to record eida got booted and tomo-zo was brought in to play guitar. She was in a band with Oreo a keyboard player and a year later when armmy went nuts/got sick she came on as back up singer, keyboard player and Hana add lead vocals to her drumming duties. They also add a couple of dancer to keep the crowd excited as the two main vocalist were usually stuck at the back of the stage.
Thats how they stayed til recently they lost their last dancer. In an effort to find a new pair they instead got a tiny drummer that let Hana come out and play rhythm guitar and a vocalist/performer who has the energy of a energizer bunny and is quickly becoming the lead vocalist. Also they found her singing in the high school choir.
Rest of the band is early thirties.
Suggest you check out the other video on this album,”I wish I”
If you loved this vid, the next will blow your mind.
Hana seems like an amazing talent! The whole band is wildly brilliant.
I really hope you check out more from Gacharic Spin and their other project Doll$boxx!
You need to check out I Wish I, or live versions of Redline and Tamashii to understand the diversity of this band, and their energy and talent. Yuri, their normal drummer was out on maternity when Mindset and I Wish I videos were filmed.
I did I wish I. Should be up this week!
Check out their newest song "I WISH I" - a lot of metal elements.
Great song. Reaction should be up in the next few days.
Well well, actually got me to subscribe there. A lot of the things you said there are my thoughts exactly, (and i'm sure the feelings of quite a few others) who at some point just stopped "actively" listening to music. Liking what you always liked and then the mainstream, "popular" music you get exposed to everywhere and pretty much constantly. For whatever reason some years ago I did start to seek out new and interesting things, and lo and behold, pretty much all my favorites are "new" to me.
Still blows my mind how much awesomeness is going on all over the world (including my own country Germany), that i never knew existed because i didn't actually look.
Also as has been said, since you liked this one, "DOLL$BOXX" is a really cool side project they had with singer Fuyuki Tenge (Fuki), it's Gacharic Spin goes metal and pretty much every song is great at least. Of course, Fuki leads into "Unlucky Morpheus", that introduces one to guitarist Shiren, who also played in "妖精帝國" (Yousei Teikoku), and the web just goes on and on until you spend days listening through the entire back catalog of bands like Sokoninaru and of course ASTERISM, and so on and so forth and it's a great ride!
Thanks mate! Looks like I've got my work cut out for me! It's like an unending spiderweb of connections to further greatness. Glad to have you on board!
This could lead you astray, less technical, longer video, not their hit (maybe try Astral Dogma?), but this vid best shows the cult appeal of Yui the self-proclaimed Queen, of Yousei Teikoku (The Fairy Kingdom), or some such. But it’s just one of those clips, I wish I was there! Not really a huge band, but what a production! “Patriot Anthem“ live ua-cam.com/video/HK3ZN5bpr-M/v-deo.html (subtitles recommended)
I only came across them a couple of days ago, myself - goes to show there is a LOT we have still to discover in music and performers.
It's weird, but I get a sort of "French punk" vibe from these ladies. 😎
Yeah I'd say that's fair to say. It's just a cool disjointed energy that's surprisingly diverse and colourful.
One of the founders of the band who in this video is playing the drums also plays guitar, bass, keyboards and sings. This is a clip from during lockdown in Japan where she covers smells like teen spirit by Nirvana and uses boiling water, jars, balloons, a ruler, toothbrush, straws, hairdryer etc etc to cover the song. She is an amazingly talented musician. ua-cam.com/video/HbXmA7pvHbU/v-deo.html
so that'll cover the ruler and toothbrush questions (I warned you I'd link them! but others have it covered...) The keyboardist Oreo's cheeseburger outfit (all of 2018, give or take) is featured in the Instrumental 2018 live that i know has been linked. Highly requested Tamashii (Soul) will cover duel drumming. Witch's Hat? In the old days (09-13+) they put LED lights on Everything, hats bras guits drums amps etc, so when you get to old stuff, or specifically into costuming history, you can miss it... And Helmet-CowBell is featured in at least 2 (3?more?) drum solo videos, one immediately before Instrumental 2018 live, the other in 2013 i believe, called "drum solo", it includes a dramatic re-introduction of singer Fuki (which confuses people... who? what band is it? (Gacharic Spin featuring Fuki of Unlucky Morpheus et al, thus equivalent to Doll$Boxx), was it before or after Doll$Boxx (my best info? while still supporting both, within the first year of Doll$Boxx release...)
Ah ha! Man. I have so much history to sift through. Thank you.
Man. That video took me on a journey. I got worried with the scissors.
It's completely understandable how people get busy with jobs, families, etc., and stop keeping up with current music, just listening to old favorites - which carry a lot of emotional weight since they're from one's formative years. The problem is that music keeps evolving and if you don't keep up, a few years go by and most of it just sounds completely alien. 18 year-olds don't go "Argh, the music today just isn't like it was when I was 13, I don't get it," because they're immersed in music for those five years. From 25 to 30 is often a completely different story. By 35 it can be like waking up from a coma: "What the heck happened while I was out?!"
That is dead accurate. Well said. If I hadn't started this channel and forced myself to critically analyse some of these songs, I never would have rediscovered my passion.
“I’m come for the funk, and stay for the joy”
You should react to their song “ i wish i” , and its gonna blow your mind 🤘
I hadn't heard of this band before and I appreciate the talent. The70s cartoons you are looking for are 'Thundercats' and 'He Man / She ra'. I remembered being a kid in the 70s too. WRT influences all over the shop and to cheer up the soggy eastern seaboard of Australia, I'd love you to react to the Italian metal band Nanowar of Steel with Norwegian Reggaeton. To appreciate this song 1) turn on subtitles - most if it is in Spanish with some English, 2) if you are unfamiliar with Black Metal (which I'm sure you already are - I wasn't) have quick look into it as well as 'Varg' and Fantoft Church. Other Nanowar of Steel songs that can't be passed by are Valhalleluja and La Polenta Taragnarock. As an Australian I appreciate the expert level of piss-take as well as the sheer joy and exuberance
Valhalleluja has crossed my desk before. I must investigate further!! Thank you mate. And, contravercial opinion time.. which Voltron? Vehicle Force or Lion Force?
PS ThunderCats was a game changer for me.
@@PrymalChaos Ahh Voltron! I'm ashamed to say I can't really remember. Though I did play The Dickies playing the Banana Splits the other day and took a friend back to early childhood trying to remember what show it was in
BTW If you do Valhalleluja it's in English, but the other language that is sung/comes up on screen is Hebrew and have an Ikea catalogue ready. If you do La Polenta Taragnarock subtitles essential (in Italian), polenta is a corn meal usually cooked with milk/stock and cheese, look up who Giorgio Mastrota is - known for selling stuff on Italian TV, and be the very first presenter to pick up on the science joke about nixtamalization (during the Irish potato famine they tried to introduce corn meal products to prop up against starvation, but they didn't know about nixtamalization and so created a vitamin B deficiency - causing Pellagra)
To me, Gacharic Spin is even more of a WTF experience than Babymetal. With Babymetal, you obviously have cute girls/pretty young women and their outfits and dancing contrasting with the heavy music. It's something unique and polarizing, but if you like them, you get used to it pretty fast. I've heard Gacharic Spin more than a few times now and I still don't feel like I'm used to them, like they're so unpredictable in every song that when a new one pops up, I have no clue what's coming. That's not a bad thing, not at all, but the combination of their chaotic energy, obvious musicianship, and colorful presentation always catches me off guard.
They always seem to keep me guessing. At least so far!
Very interesting (and insightful) take on a great song by a wonderful band. You're right, of course, about their musical background, starting very young in a family setting and going on to study music and music history at uni. What would you make, though, of someone extremely young and entirely self-taught (from within a musical family, admittedly) like Amira Willighagen (she won Holland's Got Talent) who destroyed all the preconceptions about age and training by singing opera with a proper soprano voice... at the age of 9, having learned from watching UA-cam videos? Where does that level of excellence come from?
I've got a theory about kids. They can achieve amazing feats because no-one has told them that it's too hard. They can also focus so much more of their attention on whatever their obsession is.
The reason I suspected Gacharic Spin had some kind of music college experience was less to do with their ability and more to do with their musical choices. There is an acid jazz element to their composition that, to me, seems to often originate in music colleges like Berkeley.
If you haven't already checked out Unlucky Morpheus, they are well worth a listen. They have the same lead singer as Doll$$ Box , Fuki, and feature killer violinist Jill. Who would have thought violin could go so well with heavy metal?
It’s one of those ones I want to get to, but keep getting side tracked! This channel is a blessing and a curse, because it’s exposing me to some amazing music, but I have so little time to work on it! 🤣
I can see others have already given most of this info, but i already wrote it all out for another video so i'll just drop it again:
I have tried to summarize the band line up chronologically. I've not included every detail
F Chopper Koga: Bass, band leader (2009-present)
Hana: Drums, Vocals (2009-present)
Tomo-Zo: Guitar, Vocals (2009-present)
Armmy: Vocals (2009-2012, died October 15, 2015)
Armmy left in 2012 for health reasons, and later passed away in 2015.
Oreo Reona joined as a touring member after Armmy left, then a full member
Oreo Reona: Keyboards, Vocals (2012-present)
From 2013 the band employed a couple of performers to improve the stage show
Mainly dancing, they also took on some vocal duties
Arisa: Performer, vocals (2013-2015)
Mai: Performer, vocals (2013-2018)
Nenne: Performer, vocals (2015-2017)
After the last performer left, Hana switched to guitar to better front the band,
The band hired Yuri on drums and Angelina (pink hair) as performer (and gradually becoming more lead vocal)
Yuri: Drums (2019-present)
Angelina: Performer, vocals (2019-present)
This is the line up you see in this video (Koga, Hana, Tomo-zo, Oreo, Angelina, Yuri)
Hana is on drums in this video because Yuri was on maternity. Not sure who actually recorded the drums
The sound varies quite a lot through their catalogue, for example when Tomo-zo is lead the songs tend to be much more poppy
『Lock On!!』 (the music video) is a good early song with the original singer Armmy
Ok, witch hats & LEDs and all... this was hard to re-find! user DMight pieced together live performances of LockOn! from DVDs 2010, 2013, 2014?, 2015, & 2016, as good a history as we could want ua-cam.com/video/_EVX0pK7UvY/v-deo.html
This translation gives a good idea of original singer ArMMY's sexy ideas for lyrics, and in general the amount of english they (and many/most japanese bands) sprinkle into their songs, a lot i'd say, and having it pointed out helps get over the accent barrier when bands like lovebites, bridear, fategear, telecide, aldious, even bandmaid attempt (or exclusively use) all english songs... lyricstranslate.com/en/lock-lock.html-0
Music by Koga in 2009(08?) when she was realizing that The Pink Panda just wasn't gonna let her get out enough funk-rock. And don't know if the pun is intentional (it's Hana who is pun obsessed, not me!), but R & L are notoriously confused in asian languages, so the title works as RockOn!, tho the lyrics are clearly locking on to a "target" pretty-boy toy, so...
Awesome! That actually explains a lot. Especially why Hana bounces around so much between instruments.
Thanks Tim. I added the link to my watch later playlist. I appreciate you taking the time.
This band is so amazing, and the more you dig, the crazier they get. Fully capable of going from bubblegum Japanese pop to hard metal to "what the fuck just happened" instrumental work without blinking an eye. I have bands I like more, but very few bands impress me more than these girls.
Oooo good choice. Genius Musicians :) Hana, err whats she playing in this .... alright, drums , plays anything you can think of including EWI. F Chopper, bassist, has her own bass instructional dvd series. This line up all but the front performer ~35, kinda met in High school . Angelina , v. Early 20's, front of house. Not really in my wheelhouse BUT infectious music. As you say Sat Morning Carts. God I love Japan ....
I can't stop thinking about this song.
Hana, Koga, and TomoZo all put out instructional DVDs “together” (smart management) at approx the same time, 2010-11?, so ages 21-24?!

That would be cool!
Love that you found them--they get too little attention. GS started in 2009, with a lead singer called Armmy (Takae Ashitomi). They did a sort of highly technical punk-pop, but crossed genres a lot. They started to have some friction within the band, and then in early 2012 Armmy left for health reasons. She died in 2015; their work with her is very much worth seeing-here is an early one: “Setsunaku” ua-cam.com/video/vfzIt20_xXg/v-deo.html The girls were all just out of high school, and you can see they were already very technical.
When Armmy left, GS had tours lined up in both Japan and abroad for 2012, and needed a lead singer. For the Japan tour various singers (including Fuki) filled in for different shows, but they couldn’t find someone good enough who could also commit to the band full time For their overseas tour Hana (who was doing drums and vocals and was effectively the co-leader of the band) took the lead vocals on herself. She also happens to play several other instruments.
GS had had a great chemistry with Fuki when she filled in for them, so while they were figuring out what to do with GS they contacted Fuki about doing a more metal project. This became Doll$Boxx. They wrote and recorded their first album at the end of 2012, then picked up GS again full time in 2013. They are still active, but occasionally pick up the Doll$Boxx collaboration again when they and Fuki have time in their schedules.
Gacharic Spin have added more personnel (a drummer, allowing Hana to focus on guitar and vocals, and dancers who also sing). It's impossible to define them by genre. You'll find everything in their catalogue from metal and punk to electro, dance, pop and ballads. Most of their recent work merges multiple genres.
Core personnel (these are also the members of Doll$Boxx along with Fuki):
Hana (Hana Sano): vocals, drums, guitar, keytar, other instruments
Tomo-Zo (Tomoko Midorikawa): lead guitar
F-Chopper Koga (Michiko Koga): bass
Oreo Reona (Reona Suzuki): keyboards, vocals
Several other performers have rotated in and out of GS. Currently they list Yuri as their drummer and Angelina doing dance and vocals.
Thanks for the info.. I have so much to check out!
When GS was first stating out they copied a lot of idol things as a sort f parody. They made list of the their likes, dislikes, etc. under influences koga listed primus, Hana said pantera and Oreo liked deep purple. I’m sure they were also listening to Japanese bands.
Hana writes the majority of their music and I must say her music is very derivative, derivative of every mtv video ever made plus a whole lot of jazz/blues standards. She is also very good at writing to the strengths of her fellow band mates and for each and every lead vocalist.
Hana seems to have listened to everything. I sure her dads musical abilities as a trumpet player influenced her creation of a R&B song called generation gap as well as it’s very creative video.
Did you not recognise the faces from Doll $ Boxx? they have just exchanged Fuki, borrowed from Unlucky Morpheus, for Angie with the pink hair, now they have two screamers Hana, drums on this track, and Angie pink hair, what a band xx
So this was my first ever reaction to these guys. At that point I hadn’t even heard of Doll$Boxx. In fact this may have been one of my first two or three Japanese reactions! So glad I found these guys!
Gacharic as in “Charlie””. They’ve been around for 12 years. Not a funk band. This is just one funky song.
The song is about breaking free of the constraints and expectations of Japanese society.
Try the other video from the same video: I Wish I.
Hana, the drummer, also plays guitar and is co-founder of the band. She hired a second drummer so she could play guitar and sing at the front of the stage.
I am becoming increasingly more enamoured by Hana's talent. What an accomplished musician.
Don’t worry about swearing here.
Angie’s dropping f bombs
Left and right…
Also…as far as Saturday morning cartoons …
gacharic spin would be the Amazon version of the herculoids…
Actually, the founders were in fact just high-school classmates who started jamming together. Believe it.
Although they each independently diverted thru other signed bands before reuniting…. I think the HighSchool band was Heian? Never heard of any recordings… Hana: Precoci(pop dancer), 12.Hitoe (ska singer), TheSpade13(guitar or bass?, blues?), Armeria(bass, vocals). Koga: Pink Panda. TomoZo and Oreo: EuPhoria.
That just blows my mind!
@@timgove5337 Heian was a post-high school "pop-idol" band that existed while KOGA was in Pink Panda and Hana was starting Armeria with Hideki Aoyama (Kami Band). From what I found they only together for about 1.5 years and they opened for Pink Panda quite a bit. The Heian guitar player was RINA from Panda and the keyboardist was Florence Asakura from 12.Hitoe. Not sure which one was the singer.
@@PrymalChaos It becomes a little less mind-blowing when you know that all Japanese schoolchildren are required to study musical instruments K-12, and they also have a lot of after-school music clubs, so the pool of talent is enormous. Many of the insanely talented new bands are forming when the kids are still in, or just out of, high school. You have to check out Hagane, Hanabie, and Asterism. They all blow away most Western bands and they all formed while teenagers.

Yeah. I feel like Flea left some kind of a mark on Japan. Would I be correct in
assuming that Maximum the Hormone are are still a major influence on other Japanese bands?
@@PrymalChaos Flea was a big influence on a lot of Japanese bassists (including F Chopper Koga in this video, although her biggest inspiration for her highly technical slap style is Les Claypool from Primus - she often gets called "The Flea of Japan" however).
Maximum the Hormone are definitely still a major influence on Japanese bands! Ue-chan from them is obsessed with Flea and he was also an influence for Koga. Also Akane from Band Maid is heavily influenced/inspired by Nao from MTH.
