The Problem with Milling Heavy Logs

- I cut a large heavy log on my Woodland Mills HM130 Max. At one point I could not turn the log by hand so I used the tractor to help out. From inside the tractor I did not have as good of a view as the camera but you will see from the video that it was a little hard on the mill. I won't be doing that again.

When you build a sawmill shed, build it tall enough and strong enough to put a winch above the mill. It's not as fast as a hydraulic log turner, but it is a lot cheaper and easier on the body.

Agree 100%. I thought the one that "Our Dream in the Woods" did was pretty slick. Hopefully, my mill shed gets built with a similar set up this summer.
@@claytonnicholson4639 Yes, his works really well. If the shed roof was about 2' higher it would give it a little more room when he lifts. A brace on the top would take some of the flex out of the top arm. Also, mounting the winch on the pole and running the cable through some pulleys would make for a neater setup.
How many HP does your tractor...lifting capacity? That is my problem, my tractor is to small

I use an old style bumper jack modified with a shallow hook welded onto it. I made mine from a broken jaw of a crescent wrench and sharped the tip. Have a wedge piece of wood to hold the log in place as it usually takes two goes to turn a big one.

I have the same mill and find that moving the log away from the stops helps a lot, also I use a strap wrapped around the log like a chocker, hook it over a grapple tooth and lilt up.
I got a new stop from woodland mills and it has a roller on top, so I'm experimenting to see if that works better.

I spray my bunks with non stick cooking spray it helps. You got some nice lumber out of that big log you really had to work for it 😮💨

You could lift your log off with the tractor, sit it on on the ground, turn it over, then set it back on the mill. I’ve done it that way for years…..slow, but it works.

Great vid...It looks like your second last bunk is missing its stainless steel cap. Did WM short you?
No. Tractor got that too. Grapple managed to get a hold of the backside when I was placing a log on the mill and bent it slightly. I hope to straighten it out and put back soon. Thanks for watching.
I have run into that same situation,and my Peavy is much shorter than yours, what I have resorted to is using a long nylon lifting strap with one end wrapped around the log in the direction I want the log to go and gently lifting it straight up with the tractor. And Bob's your uncle!

A friend of a friend was selling a log splitter and he threw that in with the purchase. He had made it himself. I actually had the peavy before I bought a mill.
