  • To embrace the work from home dad life, I decided to build myself a backyard office space. Check out how with the help of family and friends, I create this new workspace.
    Mistakes are made, the struggle is real and the end result is 100% worth it.
    Thanks for watching & hope to hang out again in the next video!

    Thank you to everyone who's watched this video and shared such love in the comments. At times I almost put the camera away and I'm happy I was able to put this video together. I'm now in my 2nd winter and still enjoying all that hard work from the build, love this space. The comments bring me back to this vid and make me smile so thank you again!
    For anyone who is thinking about building their own space - my mindset was its going to be hard and cost me no matter the time so I might as well do it now while I know i can. My other advice would be to get a nail gun and knee pads.
    Much Love
    - Drew ❤

    Man, you did a great job! It brought back a lot of memories from a few years ago when I built my little off-grid shed/house -- both the parts where it's like "yay! I did that!" and also the parts of "no. never again." Excellent job, and I really enjoyed the video itself, too.

    It's something about watching people in their element that gives me a warm feeling and these concrete guys were on point! You made the right choice. If the foundation isn't perfect, nothing will be and you had the cutest little apprentice. Very nice build!

    I'm a stay-at-home dad as well and a father of 2 sets of twins. I am glad to see you do this project and know exactly what you went through. We built one for my wife during the pandemic and the sheet rock and insulation was a pain and tedious. But once it's done it's well worth it and they can be a great value to your home. I do regret putting in too much insulation because in the summer it's extremely hot and a portable AC is a must-have! I'm now ready to build a floating wood deck on the outside.

      I’ve grown up around residential construction so it’s not new me. The challenge I run into is dealing with planning and zoning red tape.
      When covid hit I decided to indulge my interest in architecture by designing and having built a new foyer onto out house, followed by a total renovation of the separate garage building behind our house. Transforming it with out altering the foot print from a dark, freezing cold art and wood shop into jewel box music studio/art gallery with an art studio( which I’ve out grown). I’m always day dreaming and planning what I’ll do next.

Just curious, what did you use to secure the stud walls to the concrete slab? Also, did you use drip edges or gables on the edges of the metal roof? Last question, did you have a set of plans you followed or did you plan and build it out yourself? If I decide to move forward, I'll have to get some of your artwork on the wall when it's complete.

      Thank you and awesome that you can relate to the dad life! I used concrete anchors for the base plates. I did put drip edges on, but I might have done them wrong. I basically just looked at lean to style sheds and followed pro builders on youtube to get myself a plan. I had some great friends help me out with this part too. Good luck and enjoy the process if you get after it!

    Cool build! I like that you included the trenching and landscaping work. One question: between putting up the drywall and mudding, it looks like you put some green-colored filler around the ceiling beams. What is that green stuff?

      Oh, never mind. I see it is masking tape. I guess what I’m really asking is what kind of sealing did you need to do inside and outside around that lumber?

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  9 місяців тому

      Yeah exactly! i used tape since i knew my mudding would be a mess since it was my first mud job 😂 I caulked around the rafter seems and the seems between my siding. That helped cover up some of my novice finishing touches. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    Does your city require zoning approval and a building permit?? With the shed at the bottom of that slope in the yard, does water runoff pool at that (low end) end of the shed? Any termite shield below the bottom wall plate and concrete slab? Any roof venting (I guess not)? Rafter ties?

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Рік тому

      I was under the size requirements for a permit. I added more drainage around the perimeter and I haven’t had any water issues. I added a barrier under the bottom wall plates for bugs. No roof vent but did add rafter ties.

    Awesome work. 2 years later, any insights / issue with the slab foundation?

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  5 місяців тому

      The only issue i've had was from a big rain storm, had to reroute my gutters away from the shed. Probably an obvious fact but the floor does get cold so less efficient heating in the winter. In the summer I dig the cool floor. Overall i'm still happy with it. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    Awesome build! One question though. Don't the outside walls usually get T&G, then weather barrier, then siding? Was there a reason you just did weather barrier then siding?

      Thank you! I used a product by LP Smartside that doubles as a sheathing and exterior for the structure. So I weather wrapped the studs and put the smartside on next.

    Awesome shed.
    With the high back yard. How do you deal with drainage? All that water flowing down to your shed and house.

    • @Elseweyr
      @Elseweyr  Рік тому

      I have drainage around the shed and then in the yard by the hill. I haven’t had any issues yet but do plan to add more drain tiles just for those crazy rains. Thanks for watching!

    Really cool, man! Just curious, since I didn't see it in the video (or maybe I missed it) - what did you guys anchor the walls to the slab with? I didn't see any bolts or anything in the concrete. Wasn't sure what you guys used?

      We used one of those concrete hammer nail guns. It was fun to use and loud! Thanks for watching!
