  • Learn how to make the best homemade soft pretzels right at home!! These are soft, salty, buttery and melt in your mouth. Absolute deliciousness! If you've never made homemade pretzels before, give them a try. They are so easy to make, there's no reason not to!
    What you'll need:
    1 cup milk
    2 Tbsp white sugar
    2 tsp instant dry yeast
    2 Tbsp butter, softened
2 1/4 cups all-purpose (plain) flour plus more for kneading
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 cup water
    1 1/2 Tbsp baking soda
    2 Tbsp butter, melted
1 Tbsp pretzel salt or coarse grind salt
Heat milk to 100-110*F and pour into a large bowl. Add in sugar and sprinkle yeast on top. Let 'proof' for 10 minutes. Add in salt, softened butter and half the flour. Stir to make a batter. It does not need to be smooth, lumps are fine. Add in remaining flour and mix. Once it starts to come together, knead in the bowl for a minute or two to get everything into the ball of dough. Dust a working surface with flour and turn down out and knead an additional 2-3 minutes. Don't add too much flour to your bench. The dough will be and is supposed to be soft. Put dough into an oiled bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
Meanwhile, heat water to a near boil, add to a small bowl and whisk in baking soda to dissolve. Set aside.
Once dough has doubled in size, turn out onto a work surface and cut into 6 equal pieces. Roll each into a 30" long rope. Shape into the classic pretzel shape and submerge into the baking soda solution for 10-15 seconds. Transfer to a greased or silicone baking mat lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle with pretzel salt and finish remaining dough.
Bake in a preheated 450*F oven for 9-11 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and brush with remaining melted butter. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for later. Serve with cheese sauce or mustard. Makes 6 soft pretzels. Enjoy!!

YOU HAD CREATED A PRETZEL WAR IN MY HOUSE. THE PRETZEL TURNED OUT SO DELICIOUS THAT OUR DAUGHTER AND MY WIFE STARTED FIGHTING FOR PRETZEL. UNFORTUNATELY, I END UP WITH ONLY ONE PRETZEL. NEXT TIME I HAVE TO DOUBLE THE QUANTITY. Thanks for uploading a great recipe.

@@StephenKershaw1 in the United States, there is a popular snack that is small and crunchy called a pretzel, therefore we refer to these larger dough pretzels as 'soft pretzels.' It's not a matter of existence, it's just a difference in lexicon and language.

Mine turned out good, too, but I used pretzel salt, 1 tablespoon was way too much. also, I added at least one more cup of flour. I had to scrape some of the salt off. all said and done. It turned out good.

I made this just now and it were so good and easy to make. Your instructions is so clear and easy to follow. The dough is so easy to handle and this is so astonishing as most recipe video I've tried will have much more difficult dough as showed by the respective chef. In fact, this is my second try on pretzel recipe after I failed so bad on another recipe (which supposed to be no knead and super easy). I'm truly thankful and look forward to try more recipes from you.

This is simply the best tasting homemade pretzel recipe I’ve found. Not complicated. Easy and good. I used kosher salt for the topping. Regular pretzel salt is a bit harsh and too salty for my taste. This is a keeper. Highly recommend trying this recipe. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful video.

OH my what a wonderful recipe.
I use this recipe to make pretzel buns for sandwiches and I bake them on a pizza stone; talk about tasty.
I have substitute the white flour for wheat flour and the white sugar for brown sugar (light).
I don't know why I need to mix the soda in hot water because it dissolve better in cold water just like cornstarch so I mixed it in cold water then heated it up.
I also place the soda solution in a deep mixing bowl as oppose to shallow. That way I was able to cup and submerge each pretzel in my hand and transfer directly to the baking sheet.

I was watching dozens of videos and reading recipes and formulated an idea of how I wanted to proceed. Then I came across yours and it’s 100% what I envisioned for my recipe. Some recipes had bread flour, brown sugar, egg wash and even to use a lye instead of baking soda. Also love how a stand mixer (to mix) and stovetop (for baking soda dip) was not used So happy I came across your video. Thank you for sharing 🙏👍🤩

Great recipe! This is on our to bake list now. While traveling through Amish country, we picked up some fresh pretzels at a road side stand. They offered to either dip the pretzels in melted butter ( as was done here) or they offered to to dip the pretzels in a butter & brown sugar mixture. And those were great. I think we will try this recipe with both toppings.

Great video! I made these today and they turned out perfectly. I wish I would have made a double batch. I switched the butter with oil because I don't have butter and had to use almond milk, and they still came out browned and crispy on the outside and with perfect pretzel goodness on the inside.

Putting the pretzels in boiling baking soda water gives them a much chewier soft pretzel texture!

    • @croutoncrackerjacks
      @croutoncrackerjacks  5 років тому

For those of us that like our pretzels to have a slight chew without being so hard as to rival chewing on a car tire, just warm water will do. But if you like yours chewier, by all means, boil them.

I made this recipe and it came out absolutely delicious. I used 2% milk and unsalted butter. I let them rise for almost 2 hours.
I did not use all of the rest of my butter for brushing over them, only about half.
After calculating everything that I used, I figured out that each pretzel should be anywhere between 130-140 calories depending on how evenly you divide the dough. Just thought I would add this as I know people like to know how many calories you are looking at.
    Great and easy recipe!

These came out so good! I had a moment of panic when I stuck my hands in the dough to knead and found it pasted to my skin, but after a harrowing several minutes scraping the goo from my fingers, I got a little more flour in the mix and it worked out fine. Delicious, easy, and pretty fast!

This is a great recipe. Follow the recipe and they will turn out just as in the video. They are great! I plan on using this recipe to make dinner rolls. Do just as directed except: After proofing, flatten the dough out just a little bit more. Then cut into squares or different shapes. place in the water/baking soda bath and add salt to taste. When done baking, brush a butter and garlic powder mix on top. Serve. Great dinner rolls!
