A Meitei Professor, speaking by Zoom from Imphal, has strongly and unequivocally condemned the viral video of 2 Kuki women paraded naked and molested in May in the Thoubal district of the Imphal valley by a Meitei mob estimated between 800-1000 people. Prof. Homen Thangjam said it is “indefensible” adding “I strongly condemn it”. He said “certain acts cannot be justified even in a time of war and violence”.

Those two are "girls" not "women" who are between the ages of 21 to 23 . We Naga also strongly condemned this inhumanity of brutal kills.

I listened to Barkha Dutt's show where it was learnt that two young girl students were dragged out of their rent house brutally raped and murdered and their parents cannot even claim the bodies. Also in another incident when a small boy was shot ,the mother being a Meitei married to a kuki took her child to hospital thinking she being a Meitei nothing will happen to her. I could listen to the professor on these topics for hours. This is a lesson to hardliners and majoritarians in India.about the profound diversity and complexity of our society - even a geographically small and contained place like Manipur has so many, many, almost countless differentiations and unique manifestations. It is an unspeakable tragedy that the magnificent and noble possibilities of Manipur, its search for itself should have been so mindlessly cut off and twisted in the direction of division, hatred and violence. This is the result of the BJP's politics. Manipur carries a message for the whole country. I am absolutely confident watching these interviews that Manipur has the capacity to pull itself out of the present situation and put this terrible time completely behind it. I just didn't know how to label the mob of hundreds and thousands belonging to the same community playing part in one specific crime. They walked two women naked for I don't know how long and then a bunch of rapists from the mob did what no one would wish on their daughters or sisters.

I wish he live upto his interview which he spoke up... I have Meitei friends. They were very chill and nice to hang out with during our college days. But ever since the conflict began, I regularly called and asked them about what was going on. I had Kuki friends in contact too.
I immediately noticed the difference that my Meitei friends were bloodthirsty and forgot all about their Kuki friends. They showed psychopathic and violent tendencies from the beginning. I suspect it's because of propaganda and brainwashing.
Meanwhile my Kuki friends were shellshocked with how the situation was unfolding. They were more worried about their friends and relatives stuck in Imphal because of how the Meitei mobs were breaking into Kuki houses and Manipur University premises to apprehend innocent Kuki students and Kuki people in general.

The incident took place on May 4 in Kangpokpi. At that point, ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities had just begun in the state.
The horrific video which forced the Biren Singh government into acknowledging the scale and type of violence in the state and apprehend an accused months after the incident took place, shows two women stripped naked and being paraded by a mob. One of the survivors in the video said, “Manipur’s Police were present there, but they didn’t help us.”
Another survivor said that she saw four policemen sitting in the car and looking at the violence. “They didn’t do anything to help us,” she said. Her father and brother were killed in this mob attack. The first survivor said that residents of the B. Phainom village in Kangpokpi received information from their Meitei neighbours that Meitei mobs were making their way to the village. Kuki villagers knew they must run out of the village, but the families of the two women seen in the video were unable to and were captured by the mob.
The complaint to police, which The Wire has seen, claims that the Meitei mob were armed with sophisticated weapons.
“I was thinking about the other survivor…but the attackers were not thinking of anything. They took us to a bushy area. Three people held me and one gave out a call, “Those who want to torture them, please come’,” the survivor said.
The woman said that there were people who helped them among Meitei community members too. “Some of them asked us to take off our clothes, but there were also people who wanted to save us,” she said.
The FIR registered on June 21, 2023 speaks of three women-survivors in the incident of May 4, 2023, who were stripped naked and paraded. The FIR records a gangrape of a survivor.
The other survivor told The Wire that no rapes took place. “We were not raped by them - they just took off our clothes and touched our bodies,” she said. As noted before, the complaint and FIR allege the gang-rape of one woman.

The Meitei Professor, has strongly and unequivocally condemned the viral video of 2 Kuki women paraded naked and molested in May in the Thoubal district of the Imphal valley by a Meitei mob estimated between 800-1000 people. Prof. Homen Thangjam said it is “indefensible” adding “I strongly condemn it”. He said “certain acts cannot be justified even in a time of war and violence”.
Very truly he has expressed! We must thank him for such objective and very sensible explanations, being a Meitei himself! It is very difficult for a person to say such thing objectively in the time of ethnic or religious conflict, such as in Manipur, which is very motivated. Our sane people in Assam, who protested against the unjust mass killings of Nelly, during the Assam Movement also were the victims!. So the people of loving India must prove themselves to be above the narrow politics of BJP! Jai Hind.

Very good interview. The professor has made a valid point. The polity of India is extremely complex. But it should not be above humanity and its upto the government of any civilised country to ensure this. Sadly in the case of Manipur the government has miserably failed.

This started on 3rd May , Ccpur , the kuki dominated area. They called peace rally and brought weapons like Ak47, M16, Sniper etc. Chased down Meiteis from there. Molested , and few news of rape was also there( the video are currently not available).
This spread like fire all across the state on 4th May ... So on.

I can confirm that, the Christian Church in Napat was demolished to the ground by the Arambai Tengol themselves.
(Just to be clear, this was the day - BJP MLA Letpao village “Aihang” was ransacked and burnt down by the Arambai, while on their ride back to Imphal.)
I know you are trying to justify the act of your fellow meitei. But, your fact sources are wrong.
Never will a Kuki Christian burnt down another fellow Christian Church irrespective of any community he/she belongs to.
I want to believe you, but common sense is objecting. There apparently still no internet in Manipur, and the professor had to come to a judge's house just for the interview. How are you posting online if the whole state still does not have internet access? Here is the details (a-z) of what happened that day.
May 3rd was the start of the clashes between the two ethnics.
And on 4th May, the Arambai Tengol in large numbers came to Sugnu area {point to be clear : Sugnu bazaar lies in the point where 4 districts meets, Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Chandel, Thoubal -- Bishnupur and Thoubal is where the meiteis resides and Ccpur and Chandel is where the Kukis reisdes}…
The locals in Sugnu area from both communities agreed for peace and there was an agreement that even if there is clashes on other part of Manipur. Here in Sugnu, we will maintain peace which was the agreement. Even-though unfortunately, on 28th May (2:50 am), the clash eventually broke out.
Coming back, Napat - meitei village is connected with Makhao-Mollum and M. Bongmol village (a kuki village)
The christian church in Napat is a tin roof, mud wall (Kacha Church), with the capacity of around 30-40 peoples only.
The meitei christian in Napat consists of just few households (less than 10 households if I am not wrong). This is the only meitei church ever in sugnu area.
The meitei locals feared that the Arambai might spark the clash even here in sugnu area. So the meitei locals in Napat themselves demolish the church under the pressure of the Arambai. (And mind you, not all Napat residents are christian, just around 5-10 households).
****** point to be clear : the Arambai Tengol themselves was going to demolish the Church in Napat … But since, the church was barely 10 metres away from a kuki village (Makhao Mollum).. Fearing that the Arambai demolishing the church might anger the Christian Kuki - so the residents of Napat themselves demolish the church.****
And about myself, it is evident from the fact of me using an internet and typing comment here shows I am outside Manipur currently. I was in Manipur till the last week of June, and witness the ground reality and everything there.
And after reaching the place where I can access an internet. Then, I get to see and witness the baffling lies of the Meiteis in Social media and news channel.
These mountains of lies and fake news of the meteis compels me to comment, otherwise, I am not a person of politics or such..
In fact, I am an athlete and a student.
In fact, If I am to talk about internet use there. In Lamka (formerly known as Churachandpur), only government offices uses wifi. In facts, the meitei in the valley on Social Media mocked us by calling us - the dark zone (no internet zone)
Judging by this, I am speculating that - the internet or wifi is widely used there in the valley area where all the telecom offices and infrastructure are based.

As a person who has failed in doing his job, should no longer held that position. The start of peace process should start with resignation of cm. And there's no if and but on this. Everyone suffered just because of cm . And it is not just about fight of ethinic identity , there's larger political goal that he wants to achieve.
I can clearly see the pride in the professor for being a Meitei, though adequately shielded in intellectual broad-mindedness.

I am truly grateful to Karan Thapar and Prof. Heman for their insightful discussion on the current situation in Manipur. Yes, those who involved in the crime must get punishment as per law.
Regarding ST demand, Prof. Heman rightly pointed out that the Meetei community never wishes to be categorized as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) as they take pride in preserving the dignity inherited from their ancestors. However, due to the pressing issue of safeguarding their land, especially in the valley region, they find it necessary to demand ST status.
On the other hand, the only Kuki community seems to have concerns regarding this matter. It is worth noting that they resorted to violence in Churchandpur while pressing for separate administration, a demand they have been planning for some years now. Karan Sir, do you recall that Dr. Mary Grace Zou spoke about this tragic incident during your interview on 14th June, narrating how the Meitei group of women handed over the two young women to the Meitei men folk and instigated to rape them both which they not only obliged to rape but killed one. The Meitei women who handed the young Kuki women to the men folk are equally guilty as the one who paraded and raped the Kuki women. Those Meitei women must also be investigated and booked without any mercy.
