‘Can still feel the blows...Imphal murdered my family’: Manipur violence survivor recalls escape

- Twenty-year-old Jamngaihkim Gangte’s life has altered over the past four weeks. A college student in Imphal, her mother, a government servant, and her brother were murdered during the violence in the state.
Jamngaihkim witnessed their deaths, she said. She then fled to Delhi, where she spoke to Newslaundry’s Shivnarayan Rajpurohit about what she went through from the evening of May 3.
Over the course of 24 hours, she said, she and her family were chased by vindictive mobs, grilled for their ethnic identity, and compelled to lock themselves in a building’s terrace room for five hours before squeezing into a car’s boot to safety. By the end of this ordeal, they would witness unparalleled loss with the killing of Jamngaihkim’s mother and brother.
“They did not spare any of us,” she said. “They hit us any way they could.”

Please asked yourself from where they using the snipers, how can a normal citizen have the sniper rifle in their hand. Some of the deceased bodies are lying over near such villages open area even the Police personals are not able to get over to that places because of the snipers. Please search more the ground reality.

Your brother was my friend when he took ssc coaching around 2016-17 in Delhi. He was a regular visitor at my place in Vijay Nagar, I ate and laughed with him. I still can't process how this is happening. Sang was such a gentle and kind soul , he deserves better than this infuriating ending. Rip Sang😥 May God let you rest in his bosom!

This is a pure sign of trauma, I can see that she's become numb 😢 I couldn't help but imagine myself in her situation and the immense pain and helplessness she and her family went through experiencing all of the horror. I don't think I'll ever be able to heal from an experience like that. Losing your loved ones in front of your eyes in an unnatural way.

Kim, my prayers are with you and your family. I met your brother in 2019 and have been known to him since. We last met on the 26th of November, 2022 during IBPS PO mains examination at NIELIT, Imphal (he forgot to bring his Prelims admit card and was sent back, don't know if he managed to reach back on time. I should have contact him at least after the examination was over. A lesson for me to learn)

I belong to a meitei community and i am extremely extremely sorry for her loss...no human should ever go through what she is going through... people in both the communities are paying the price and the innocent once r the hardest hit.....today i want to speak as a human...not as a i or they belong to this or that community....what happened in the last 40 days is extremely unfortunate and preventable if the government did their job but they fail to act at the right time...the violence escalation so fast that the government did not anticipate to this level... transperancy of the governing body right from the top officials to the bottom failed miserably and the innocence has to pay the price on both sides...few people are responsible for the level of violence that broken out like someone had just opened a Pandora's box...

In Churachandpur,no meiteis were treated like this even students were safely escorted to their home but Kukis in Imphal were hunted like dogs.

Unforgivable and unimaginable. Very sad listening to what has happened to you and your family. Those person responsible must be interrogate and give capital punishment for causing so many lives. This cannot be forgiven and forgotten.
The trauma this poor lady experience may not even heal with ages, but would literally haunt her throughout her entire existence. I feel so sad for her to ever re-live this terrifying memories till the day she die. I hope she seek councelling and may God be with her through it all.

In this whole situation as much as my heart goes out to this kid and her family, I cannot thank those two angels (whom she addressed as A and B) enough for the presence of mind and humanity in such a dire situation.

Her eyes were filled with anguish and her voice trembled as she recounted the horrifying ordeal her family had endured. The pain she must have felt, losing her beloved brother and mother to the hands of a violent mob, was unimaginable.
After watching the interview , the tragic loss of her brother and mother at the hands of a violent mob, I was deeply moved. As a Mizo, it struck a chord within me, reminding me of the pain my own parents endured during the 1966 Mizoram unrest. The memories of that dark period, filled with trauma and suffering, resurfaced in my mind.
Witnessing the victim's anguish and hearing her story made me empathize with her on a profound level. I felt a deep sense of compassion and solidarity, knowing firsthand the scars left by communal violence. As a Mizo, I cared deeply for her and her family, understanding the long-lasting impact such tragedies can have.
The Kukis didn't hurt and harm any of the women and childrens like the meiteis did. In fact in churachandpur they tried their best not to hurt the meiteis there so that they can be escorted safely to Imphal. We might not be the best but we would never ever hurt women's and children's. This is something we r still proud of. God will punish them that's all i could say.
Exactly, I am from Churachandpur and the morning the Meiteis left, I was there watching. Infact many people were. We were watching and not a single Meitei was touched, let alone harmed. I took few videos from my phone.

Do you guys know who started all of this drama. If not please shut up. It happens to both community not only one side. So I will not say any further. We want peace but don't try destroyed a state which was living peacefully by some hypocrite mind. Now we can't step outside from the house. Do you how many house are burning everyday and dead toll rises. But due to internet ban it was not spread in social media. Only some people have internet. Both sides suffered so much. So don't talk about only one side. Instead of commenting and listening one sided news there are only 2 or 3 channel who reported from the ground talking both sides. Listen to them. Now a days news channel also reports many onesided news without verifying just for views. So the truth are kept hidden and violence just kept on instead of stopping.
That was what am really afraid of. Many Tribal from Manipur came to my state with empty handed. My heart cried for them..😢

I was saddened - and outraged - as I listened to her. The mainstream media has largely ignored the dreadful events in Manipur. As always, the inevitable questions arise: Was this created by politics? Could the response of police and security forces have been quicker? Again, as always, we will never receive a full or truthful answer.
On a different note, I wish the interviewer had shown more sensitivity, rather than ask questions like: "What were you thinking when you hid in the boot of the car?" Indeed? The interviewer seemed to treat it like any other routine event. I wish he had begun by offering heartfelt condolences for the loss of her family members and the anguish they endured.
They had more important things to do. Like Karnataka election and Kerala files.

My hunch is that the interviewer acted that way out of his own controlled emotion inside. It is not easy to be an interviewer too to hearing such a tearful, heartbreaking story. If Im in his position, I might have interviewed her with tears and emotion. I will not judge him.

Being a local do you think the violence could have been avoided if AFSPA was still there in Manipur.
I won’t help avoid but it could definitely help keep the meetei militants from burning 1000 houses in broad daylight. I will also be useful in preventing the burning of 100s of poor unarmed tribal villages.
