The Meira Paibi are one of the most highly respected if not revered institutions in Meitei society. They have a history that goes back decades. In their early years they fought against alcoholism. Then, in the 1980s, they struggled to get the Armed Forces Special Powers Act revoked in Manipur. Now they are at the forefront of the struggle between the Kuki and Meitei communities. Although they insist that they exist to serve all sections of Manipur’s population, they are widely identified as a Meitei organization and, certainly, the accusations and charges they face are of obstructing the Assam Rifles and, even, forcing AR to release Meitei militants accused of killing army soldiers in an ambush in 2015.

Anyone who has followed the events in Manipur, what, even the interviews by Karan Thapar could easily understand where the problem lies. One Meitei group leader in the interview with Karan Thapar declared to the world without blinking an eye that he and his people would exterminate the Kukis. The subsequent events vouch that. Where in the world do you hear women asking their brothers and sons to rape other women to settle scores? And women crowd stopping the army from doing their duties?

Meira paibi is not a single entity all over Manipur, but every locality has its own. In my locality actually the meira paibis are the one who saved few students from getting lynched during the initial phase of reactionary violence in Imphal. Their were lots of disagreements between the mobs and the meira paibis atleast in my area.
If Meira Paibis were neutral, they can neutralize this war in the genesis. In lieu, they put more fuel to the burning fire and they are one of the main reason for this conflict escalation

In Sugnu, an agreement was made between the two warring communities not to attack each other. However, just like Hitler, who inspite of signing a Pact with Russia not to attack each other, invade Russia, the Meiteis broke the mutual agreement and attacked the Kuki-Zo people, burnt down their houses and properties.
