BAL Hide A Spare - Great Spare Tire Solution - Complete Install!!!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 чер 2019
- I've been eyeing this accessory for awhile hoping someone would do a install. Sense no one has done one, I decided to take a stab at it. Overall it's an easy install but you will have to check for clearance before you start drilling holes in your RV.
Supplies I used:
Hillman Full Thread Hex Bolt Stainless 5/16-18 X 2
Hillman 5/16-in Standard (SAE) Split Lock Washer
Hillman 1 Count x 7/8-in Zinc-Plated Standard (SAE) Flat Washer
Hillman 1 Count 5/16-in Zinc-Plated Standard (SAE) Hex Nut
This video is for informational purposes only. Please do not try to install this unless you are certified to do so!!!
One tip is to install tire with valve down - that way checking pressure is easy, and don't have to slide tire out.
Good point! I need to grease bolts and paint some other areas of the bracket so I will add this to the list, Thanks!
Or carry a compressor with you at all times like I do. Then it don't matter if its low, you top it off before installing it.
Excellent video, comments, and camera angles for clear visual understanding. I like how you commented and listed the bolt sizes since the manufacturer did not include them. Great job!
You did a really good job explaining the install and showing exactly how it works. I hope you enjoy getting out there and using your home away from home. About the comments saying this should be installed form the factory. Hell yea it should. Better yet a spare tire winch that pulls it up to the underbelly like most pick up truck and SUV's have. I'm going to the junk yard and cutting one out and welding it up under the utility trailer I'm about to by. The idea came to me out of nowhere when I was watching this vid. Anyone who can weld or can find a weld shop can do the same.
Thanks man! We use our fiver at least once a month even if it’s a short trip and we love to travel! It’s a pretty simple design so I bet it wouldn’t be too hard to fabricate. I just bought the rack for $100 bucks so it’s priced pretty well too! Thanks for watching!
Good video, thanks for showing us the bolts, nuts, washers we need. Nice work!
No problem!
We have this on our Bighorn and what sucks about it is when I went to use the spare tire, those two bars had worn holes into the sidewall of the spare, rendering it useless. It wore through the cord on the sidewall so bad that the tire would have blown out. Had to buy a new spare as west lake tire and heartland wouldn’t honor the warranty. I know have a round piece of wood, the size of the spare under the tire and between the tubes so it won’t where another hole in the tire.
Thanks for sharing this!
Great video! Show the install very well and good to know the bolts you need that aren't included. We just bought a Cougar 5er and I was looking at the same issue with the spare taking up precious cargo space. Thanks again!
Excellent video, watched it before installing mine on our 2018 Winnebago Minnie today. The bolt sizes and descriptions were a huge help also. Thanks!
The tire mounting bracket can be loosened and moved closer to the edge so you don't have to slide out the pipes so far.
Didn’t know that, thanks for sharing!
Great fix for that spare. I have same issue. Nice to see it working. Now I’m gonna do it.
Still going strong!
Came here looking for ideas!! Great video and great work! Imma try a DIY bracket and put my truck and trailer tire together!!
Thanks let me know if you post this 👍🏾
This is what I was looking for my Trailer. Excellent job
Glad it was helpful 😃
Thanks for the video and clear instructions. I am definitely going to install one.
No problem! They have a few types so be sure to order the correct one! Some are for trailers with/without enclosed underbelly.
Yeah, I just saw that. Thanks. Happy camping.
Thanks for this!! Very helpful!!
I’m not as agile as I used to be so
I would rather slide the tire out instead of crawling under the RV to check the tire pressure. Also, I carry a 12 volt air compressor so I would probably not worry about tire pressure. Pressurize when I need it.
Great video. I had a retract a spare mounted close behind the rear axles and lost it on the first trip. Planning to get this and mount it in front of axles for clearance. Is it still working well for you. I’m seeing this a couple years after you posted it. :)
And no problem with it dragging? I wonder if this would be ok on a travel trailer or if it would be too low. I imagine I would have to put it as close as safely possible to the axle.
Nope, It sits pretty snug on the underbelly and I couldn’t imagine it dragging unless you went up a very steep incline 👍🏾
There’s a pretty steep incline on the way into my MMJ dispensary. ;) I’ll park down the road and walk over.
Gotcha, I put mine out back to reduce pin weight on truck but you could mount it fire of the axles and be fine, just have to check the underbelly that nothing gets in the way! Good Luck
Maybe I’ll just keep it in the back of my truck 🛻 like it is now. Way less work. It’s a second spare. I always have two.
What is the distance from the underbelly enclosure to the top of the tire frame? I would like to add my sanitary tote to it as well.
Excellent video
Thanks Dwight 👍🏾
Nice job. The only one thing I would add is a lock next to the thumb screw.
Thanks, appreciate the suggestion!
Thank you! Great video. I was looking for something exactly like this. My spare takes up way too much room. My only question is why this does not come as standard equipment? I will be sure to add this to my rig. See you on the road!
Thanks! Some rv’s from Keystone are starting to have them and it really does takes weight off the front of the rig and give you additional space!
I would put some antiseize on the "knob" bolt. Mine came with my trailer and the other day I went to get the spare and that bolt was rusted in place. so I had to find a tire place to replace my tire that blew instead of using the spare.
Good stuff!
Thanks for the video, very informative and helpful.
Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
You will be in BIG trouble when my other RV Quilter friends see that you used a lovingly made quilt as your oil rag.
🥲 it was used with care
Thanks for the video
What a pain that BAL can't see fit to include the mounting hardware. All in all though, a good video on the install. I'm still on the fence on whether I want to do this with my Arctic Fox 25Y travel trailer.
MrTommy001 I agree! If you want to move it off the bumper or out of the storage compartment I recommend it! Be sure to spray paint the bolts btw sense I never mention this in the video and thanks for watching!
Great video! Thanks for posting!
I have a dodge caravan minivan..the cable underneath rusted n broke off..i live in my van and have zero room for a tire in the back..cant afford 4-500 bucks to replace the system..you think this would work under a minivan? Thx much for this video✌😊
Unfortunately this hangs down to low and it would be too wide in order for it to work. It may be cheaper to replace the cable and have someone lubricate it so it doesn’t rust again. Stay safe!
I wonder if this could be used under a truck.
Possibly with some customization. Problem is it may sit too low and it may be too wide. I also wouldn’t want to drill into the framing of a truck either 👍🏾
Good video. I'm thinking of doing this but was concerned the tubing looks a little flimsy. What are the chances when you pull this thing out with the spare on it of the tubing bending.
Thanks and very unlikely. Although this product is cheaply made, it works well and if you do some prep work you should be able to use it without issues.
I would spray paint all the bright bolts that allow the product to move, grease the tubing so that it slides freely, and grease the bolts for the spare tire so they don’t seize. If you do this it should last a long time!
Such a good video. Thanks man!
Thanks 👍🏾!
Great job. I'm about to install mine. I guess you simply put back the nails you took out with a hammer or did you use new ones or screws?
Thanks! Hammer them back in and they will hold as originally!
Good idea!
What did you use for the tire? Mine did not come with that hardware
It should have come with mounting hardware for spare. Give them a call and have them send it out to you
Thank you
Great info by the way.
Glad it was helpful 👍🏾
That should be installed from the factory.
Daniel A I agree! I don’t understand why they would put this inside of a storage compartment when beneath the trailer protects it from the sun and if you cover it, protects it from debris. Thanks for watching!
They are on many models, several Cougar and Montanas.
Looks kind of flimsy.
