  • I am by no means the first and will not be the last person to cut down a broom pole and head to some water. But sometimes the simplest lures are the best or just ok.

    I just found your channel a few weeks ago and I'm now completely obsessed with your videos. I especially love the videos like this one where everything is done with simple tools and materials. I think I'm going to have to try this myself though I have no illusions about anything I make turning out as nice as yours do.

    Grandpa Stubelt Rip had 2 finishing lures. As a farmer in SW Michigan he only fished evenings. He fished while wading and used a rowboat to get to areas to wade. He used a home made popper from broom handle which he painted black with a recessed cup up front that he painted red. Gramps documented for years on average he caught a minimum of a hundred bass. His other lure was a black rubber worm. He said he liked to Wade because he fish the area more thoroughly and slowly.

    My Grandfather still makes broom handle lures to replicate old wooden Heddon Lucky 13's. They are still made today but they are plastic and the action just isn't the same. I'd love to see you make one, and they're deadly on Pike. Keep up the great work.

    Great video and instruction once again! If you take a piece of the broom pole and put a shallow trough on the nose, it makes a great top water popper. I make a smaller one from 1/2 inch dowel rod and paint it in a frog pattern. The bass love it!

    Paul, When fishing the Sea Of Cortez in Baja Mexico. The go to lure is the CEDAR PLUG, the simplest of lures, but very effective, would love to see you build one !

    • @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
      @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman  8 років тому

      I have some, cedar, lead and a bit of brass, that might be a project, do you fish using them often?

    • @rrmerlin3402
      @rrmerlin3402 8 років тому

      Yes, I've used them for 20+ years. And I'm headed down to the East Cape in Sept and will use them then. When on the Hotel fishing cruisers you have a wide range of lures to use, and by trial and error by far my favorite is the cedar plug. We catch many different species and no other lure is so simple. After watching you engineer lures to swim properly I'm sure they are more complicated in their build then they seem. Thanks for your channel, because of this ,I'll build lures someday.

    Very good. I like the vids with more hand tools. Not easy carving the end-grain on that broom handle but you did a nice job of keeping it symmetrical. Wouldn't take much to turn that into a popper. I grew up about 10 miles from the Heddon factory. Have a nice day.

    Awesome video matey, I don't think many people like IKEA but we still end up shopping there especially when the wife is involved 🙄
    I've decided to try and make one from a cheap rolling pin I brought whilst in a bargain style shop the other day for £1 😂 we'll have to see how that turns out. As always yours look awesome, it's crazy how the detail in the tail makes such a difference in the action!

      yes, too much of my life has been wasted there, they should just go the whole hog and make it Woman only. I also have some lovely beech rolling pins that I am saving for the lathe. The tail was a revelation, i actually cut the second one out on the bank. thanks

    Maybe try and remake some of your older videos with the broom handle. Like the old school lure, and the spook looking one you covered in jog skinz. I think it would be a welcome challenge that you'd be willing to tackle. (This pun was also unintended :P)

    • @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman

    suggestion: design a lure (your choice of style) that has tiny spinner blades (6-8?) around the neck of the lure. large spinners have been around forever and work, you could even work with some of the newer materials. it would add weight/flash/noise. mentioned this to Jord as well to ask you. he had your back, and told me how busy you've been, so I let it go, but now, since you referenced? cheers!, Chris

    • @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
