Here's a little trick i learned with a popper like that hold the rod tip almost straight up and pull back to make it pop instead of holding it low. Works much better that way (it kids pulls it up and out of the water making a good popping noise

Any advice to keep birds off my poppers?! Usually I just stop working the lure. Gulls, osprey, I have to look around before casting.

Lures are all very similar. It makes sense to make your own.
