Making a Wooden Walk The Dog Lure

  • One of the first types of fishing lures I learned to make was a walk the dog (AKA 'spook') lure. Topwater WTD lures are easy to make and very effective on largemouth bass and spotted bass. If you've ever thought of getting into lure carving, these wooden lures are a good choice to start with. Join me as I make one of these classic lures from start to finish.

    Thats a great simple lure design, such nice work, I am a keen fisherman and just in the last 3-4 months got into making my own lures for me to use, I find it very interesting and rewarding, it is amazing what can be done with a simple piece of wood and an outline of what you want it to look like, keep up the great content 👌👍

    The benefit to using 2x2 is being able to line up holes and and other cuts with the square ends still on. You can also drill the line tie and rear hook hanging on the router or by standing it up on the drill press. This make a line through really easy.

    Lathing a hardwood lure is much nicer to do than most other methods for making hardwood lures and probably at the end of the day catch fish just as much as most other lures, of course depending on how and where you weight them plus wood density.
    I think we sometimes overthink what will work the best and imagine the best looking will work better but that's not always the case.
    Saying that, I couldn't catch a Pike at all once after going through all the lures in my box and I had quite a few but a guy up stream was catching every 15mins. I asked him what his secret was and he showed me a small Pike lookalike swimbait that was sold in the local tackle shop.
    I left and headed to the shop and ended up purchasing two, a dark one and a light one ( for cloudy or clear water ) and caught Pike repeatedly that same day with the darker one, I didn't even try the other one as I was too busy catching.
    I guess the more lures of different types the better if fishing different unknown waters. Those lures were lifelike and not that cheap. I also think asking someone that is catching what their secret is, is worth it too, especially if they'll share it with you 🙂
    I'll subscribe now after All that waffling I have done 😆

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  2 роки тому +1

      The trick is to put weight on the bottom axis of the lure. Assuming you've done that, you may need more weight to add stability. If adding more weight makes it sink, you may need to try a more buyoant wood like basswood or balsa. Hope this helps.
