One thing I appreciate about Raymond's characterization is that he is a criminal yes. He makes no apologies for what he is, there are no false sides with him. But he is a realist in the fact that he recognizes he can portray whatever he needs to be, to people. He makes them understand he can and will do horrible things to them if he deems it necessary. Red is a scoundrel,,, and I love him for that. Imagine him speaking to you so casually and knowing that he is very capable of doing horrible things to you
I'd try to be chill and say, "do you remember that weekend in Budapest when we try to convince Viktor Orban to relocate the location of the IIB, and we tried to hide from Nikolai Kosov? boy what a weekend that was".
I'd argue that he is far from being a scoundrel. The definition of scoundrel: - A dishonest or unscrupulous person. A person, especially a man, who treats other people very badly and has no moral principles - this doesn't fit who Red is.
The show got soo much better when they dropped the off the rails, all over the place needlessly convoluted arc about Liz' parentage. It was a great ongoing B plot for about the 1st half of the series, but just got mired in complexity for the sake of complexity instead of creating meaningful intrigue. So glad we're back to Red just being Red again.
I agree: it became painful to watch. An FBI agent supporting her "mother", who has just has two FBI agents murdered, made no sense. In fact, it was total bollocks.
We needed to understand why Raymond specifically asked for Elizabeth. The parentage and uncovering the backstory is what separated this from a typical FBI informant drama. As much as we say we didn't need Elizabeth, we actually did need her until we became so invested in just watching Red be Red, we didn't care about Elizabeth. Let's be real: Once Elizabeth was gone, the focus for Red shifted to keeping the Task Force active, which was made the show a little one-dimensional. The last two years survived solely on the strength of Reddington, which was never intended to be (and really couldn't be) a long-term solution.
No, Reddington is True Neutral. He has no particular adherence to order or the idea of it, nor a revulsion of it; instead he uses it when it's useful to him, and undermines it when it isn't, so clearly Neutral on the order/chaos axis. As for the good/evil axis, he does what benefits himself and his family, and nothing more. If he were greedy, sadistic, or willing to kill innocents with nary a second thought, he could be neutral evil, but he is none of those things. And he's definitely not good, so he's neutral on the good/evil axis. True Neutral. Just like many mercenaries, mobsters with codes of honor, assassins who refuse to kill innocents, etc. etc.
Id argue chaotic good, if not chaotic neutral. He cares for people and can empathise, but is ofcourse a crime lord. His overarching goal of completing the blacklist is what tips the scale to good over neutral. IMO. as previously stated, this is up for discussion amongst smarter people than me ;P
