Raymond Reddington is on my all time great characters list. He’s complex, well read, kind and full of crazy stories, while being incredibly devious, one step ahead and totally ambiguous about whether he’s an evil , sociopathic mastermind, or a loving father with a deeply subtle awareness of ethics, who is just immersed in a spy vs spy world where the craziest decisions are necessary and unavoidable.
He's playful and evil. Kind and silly. Knows when to discipline and when to give leniency. He's the epitome of the laughing/crying face.
well said.
He was never a father ;-)

TV Show "security" with guns all in a crossfire with each other that would become a keystone kops circular firing squad if they actually had to pull the trigger.

I put it up there with justified.
Both hooked me into the series from the start
I agree
I watched this and i went, "You have my attention."
You've reminded me of Mr Robot. Welp the first few episode were just mind blowing.
Equalled only by Lost. They're on the beach with a wrecked plane around them (we don't know why) and a random man gets sucked into the still spinning plane engine.
I like how the alarm goes off before everything locks down so he could have sprinted out the door if he wanted to. I also love how the guards stand directly in each other's line of fire.
Yeah, theatrics. But the first time when I didn't really notice...... ohhhh that shit was cool 😎 😅
it is a tv show..not reality
in all fairness if a guy walks into an FBI office and gives his full legal name and starts giving himself up willingly chances are hes not running
I love how he’s always so dramatic, surrendering on the emblem of the FBI 😂 James Spader made this character great, just like Johnny D did to Jack Sparrow
Why are you comparing Spader to a chronically lying alcoholic wife beater?
Reddington is one of the greatest characters of all time and it’s only possible because of Spader’s portrayal. The show as whole though, leaves a lot to be desired. A few seasons in and it became glaringly obvious that there was no endgame or even an idea of how to end things.
A tight 5-6 seasons with a clear, plausible explanation for who red is and a neatly wrapped up version for how his story ends (or doesn’t), could have made this show one of the greatest of all time. Instead we got loops of contrived identities, pointless shadow organizations/enemies, and one of the most frustrating characters of all time in Liz.
Absolutely nailed it. And the redarina theory makes everything even worse
Thank You. Thaaaaank You🤠
It's an open secret that Spader had to go to physical therapy after each filming because his back hurt for carrying this whole show.
Yeah, I stopped watching after 5 seasons. It was pretty good in 1-3, at season 4 I was suspecting the writers had no idea where they were going, after season 5 it was just a soap opera with variations on the same plot repeating over and over.
This show drove me crazy. Great main character, but then what does the FBI do? Oh, here's a wanted criminal, armed and dangerous. Let's send a couple of agents. Gah! You call *everyone* and carpet bomb the area with feds, SWAT, whatever it takes. It's not like they have anything better to do than catch someone on the most wanted list.
No joke when I say this is the single greatest pilot of any tv show ever.
For me it was both The Blacklist and The Mentalist

I WAS LOST FOREVER to this man!!!
He took possession of the FBI, too. They just didn’t know it yet.

Nah, Riddler has to have a funny side, like Jim Carrey portrayed him. Ultron was the perfect comic book villain to be played by Spader. I wouldn't know who else could fit the bill. Cold-hearted, rational to a deathly extent, well-spoken and to the point.

I love the psyhcology behind this series in order to catch the bad guy u have to think and sometimes be the badguy...
Who knows more about criminals then criminal themselves
He surrenders like a boss. I just love that scene 😂
Liz was the weakest character in the whole series.
The writers did her dirty. They wrote her so bad
Reason?
Just poorly cast…but given that the character wasn’t what she should’ve been
just like carl in TWD and cripple boy in breaking bad
No , she was the most important character in fact when she left the show , the show lost the plot ( the Connection between him and Liz ) and was ruined
"You have my attention". Best line of the clip
imagine being the girl that work at the FBI headquarters and not knowing the 10 ten most wanted list....
The ten most wanted list is a PR stunt that no one at the FBI cares about except the ones actively working on them.
It's just her job, and she is a recepcionist. Most people work for companies and don't even know the CEO's name.

looking back on every role James has had, had led him to this. His masterpiece.
Totally agree. He should win another Emmy for this role already. I think his talent and skills are for an Oscar if he decides to return to the big screen again with a main role. He has the same talent as Denzel Washington in my opinion. Love both.
this scene still holds up.
It legit feels like a movie
Just imagine the first group of gaurds...
"Free...wait, he froze already..."
"Put your han....well, his hands are already up..."
"Get down on...he's already on the ground, jesus christ..."
"Fuck, this is anticlimatic..."
I'm imagining the first set of guards all opening fire simultaneously and shooting each other as they're standing exactly opposite each other.
Someone should have told the actors about gun safety.
Finger on the trigger, pointed at the head without any signs of threat. Jeez.
I get it … hollywood but still.
@@Slithermotion It could be argued that Reddington was flagged as such a high risk suspect that there was a shoot to kill order on him if he resisted arrest. But yeah, certainly not the first time tv/movies didn't get gun handling right.
“Stop resisting! Stop resisting!”
😁😁😁
This character fits James Spader so well and in my opinion, it’s the best role he’s ever done!
The Concierge of Crime. No character is better than Red. He's just too good.
The dude legit has time to put his stuff down, position himself on the FBI logo and legit put his hands behind his head as if he planned the whole thing. LEGENDARY!!!!
He did plan the whole thing. Red kept saying that what he values above of else is loyalty. We keep seeing how he was the most loyal person in this entire show. No matter what Elizabeth did and how much she betrayed, he stayed loyal to her. Pisses me off.
well he did plan the whole thing and much much much more then just this moment so .... yeah
This is just phenomenal. I have seen movie scenes that are really brilliant like the John Wick's introduction but this, is just SICK. Raymond Reddington is just something else.
john wick was good though that was really good i would compare it to this opening any day
Him and joker
I love how at 2.31 when the are looking through his file they show you a you Raymond Redington and they use as young James Spader
In this scene I knew I was in love with Raymond Reddington and I would never leave him.
What a fabulous show. James Spader is spectacular!
One of the greatest openings to a tv show ever, gives me chills every time. It’s just so simple but so effective and masterfully well done and acted
The finale was quite sad... After 10 years, thank you Raymond Reddington
It sits differently with you after watching the first 3 seasons. All of this, the surrender, the torture, the risk.... all of this he did for his Lizzie. We love you, Red.
And yet Lizzie is the most annoying character. If I was Red, I would have packed the hell out of there after spending a day with Liz.

only problem i have with this scene is that you would NEVER surround a suspect like that, you're literally putting yourself in each others line of fire
But when you’re watching the show for the first time and you see that scene, it certainly makes an impression of what’s going on and I really need to continue watching.
@@johndoe-xv3wb
You do understand it’s a TV show and they weren’t really law-enforcement officers. They were a bunch of actors with plastic guns.
This scene never gets old
I like how on the Wanted Poster at 1:04 under Occupation, it simply just states: Name an Occupation.
Either someone in production forgot to give Raymond an occupation, or he has so many that you can just name any occupation and Raymond has probably done it.😂
I saw that. Also under scars and marks it says none and then in the next scene it says his tattoos match the records.
You'll remember this as the day you almost caught Raymond Reddington.
"Who the hell is Elizabeth Keen?"
That was the last time those words were ever mentioned 🤣🤣
Perfect casting.

One of the coolest opening scenes to a TV series I have ever seen.
this will forever be one of the best ways they have ever started off a show
This is the greatest introduction of the main protagonist in any TV show I swear !
I remember watching this scene for the first time. It was so good and I was thinking "The sheer audacity. I love this show!"
I've seen Spader in several roles over the years, but this is the one that made me love him.
James Spader is such an amazing actor. Loved him in Boston Legal.
Probably the one man on earth that could intimidate John Wick. So smooth, so charismatic, and so incredibly powerful and ruthless that entire governments cringe at the mere mention of his name.
He probably has markers from the entire High Table and all the Continentals.

The Concierge of Crime!!!
As much as I love the show, it should have ended with Season 8 (maybe with a differently written ending)
Agree. Although, I think it should’ve ended with season 6 (without the last minute twist ending).
(SPOILERS ALERT) Actually I think the death of Elisabeth is a good ending, but personally I really disliked seasons 7 and 8 so yeah, I think it should have ended in season 6 (and also in my opinion season's 6 explanation of who Reddington is was much better that the whole season 8 "he is katarina" story, although I think both stories have flaws)
@@laidamaria_ My thoughts Exactly. The series should’ve just stick with Raymond actually being Katarina’s childhood friend Ilya Koslov and should’ve ended at season 6 with Raymond/Ilya reuniting with a present day Katarina.
Should’ve ended at season 6. MAYBE 7
although I have to say I enjoyed the last season bc there was no Elisabeth in it. Unpopular opinion (or perhaps not) but I couldn’t stand her. She always acted like a 5-year-old who couldn’t take no for an answer.
I still can't figure out how he got through the metal detector with those big brass balls.
Honestly, from the first time I saw it, even till now. The whole scene Raymond Reddington surrendered himself to the FBI is the most badass shit in all the shows, movie, etc I have seen.

That boom when his face came on the screen. Epic. He just ruled the room.
This scene grabs you and hooks you in to one of the best shows ever created❤
The only thing more criminal than Reddington is the lack of merchandise available for this incredible program!
What are you talking about? His website on the deep web has everything.
His voice is always the masterpiece 🎉🎉🎉
Agree that few shows open so well, but there have been some. Like the character emerging naked and covered in cryptic tattoos in Blindspot.
I think it's weird how everyone looks at him as he takes his hat and jacket off, like its the most strange thing happening in the world.
You can also tell whose had training by how they're holding their gun. I saw one or two guys who are about to have a broken thumb if they pulled the trigger, and only a couple actually had their finger off the trigger.
One of the best pilot episodes EVER ! Got hooked and have watch the show 4 times.
the level of crossfire in this scene makes me very uncomfortable.
The infamous circular firing squad.
That's how you make an entrance.
Also, someone really needs to tell the Feds about crossfire.
The worst thing about the opening scene is that they started shooting, they would not only hit Reddington, but they would be hitting each other with all the rounds flying around.
Arguably one of the best scenes in the entire series!
My favorite series of all times, gets my blood pumping every season every episode every scene. Sometime I wonder if the writer's are human or 👽 every season made sense.
Harold : Zamani is a non-existent threat
Red : Hold my beer

That front desk must be shit at her job, FBI:s most wanted walks to her and tells her his name and she still has no idea who it is.
This is another great part that only James Spader could play to its fullest, that intro is one of the best tv series character starts ever.
The series began in the climax. This opening scene is full of adrenaline, every time.
Probably one of my favorite introductions to a series
This scene was a on a level of its own 🔥🔥🔥

Funny how all of the weapons are pointed at each other as much as Reddington. It would have been mass suicide.
