It’s not even that simple. For the dancers if their agent puts them in for the work and you reject it because your not getting paid you could end up losing all your work. My brother was an actor and a model and they asked him to do some work for free but he said he couldn’t afford to and he had 2 jobs after that cancelled and his work dried up almost immediately. He had to quit acting altogether because that one job was relatively high profile

I did the NFL halftime show this year with Dr Dre, Eminem, and others. I got the opportunity through a director of an all district marching band that I joined while I was in high school. He asked alumni to submit their info and as far as I know, they accepted everyone who submitted. At first we weren’t gonna get paid, during the process of signing NDA’s they kept telling us that. But then on the first day of rehearsal they didn’t tell us, but some cast members noticed that they had written it in our newly signed contract. We weren’t sure but they confirmed it on the 3rd rehearsal date when they asked us to check our emails for a verification form for payroll info. The scandal about dancers not being paid and cast working for free had happened before this and it seems like they paid us in an effort to not have backlash from the inside. We didn’t get a ton of money but i’d say it was decent pay for the job.

they also target students, or at least they did for this past year. I go/went to school in LA and over winter break our school started sending emails about an "opportunity" to perform at the halftime show this year with info about how to sign up as a group (i.e. student clubs/orgs organizing a group to perform). I was on leadership for 2 dance clubs at my school and so I know several people who did perform this past year and really the only reason I didn't join them is because the rehearsals were too much for my schedule. It took a massive toll on these friends of mine since it became the primary thing they were doing with 5+ hours of rehearsal 5-6 days a week for 2 weeks (on top of being full-time college students). A lot of them were constantly exhausted and got really stressed out between school and performing and I frequently heard about how they spent most of rehearsal doing LITERALLY NOTHING and had to just sit there because things were disorganized or the people in charge were focusing on other dancers. Like you said, they couldn't bring in food and phones weren't allowed because the whole thing is very secretive and they don't want any spoilers getting out or whatever.
Anyway, my point is that they also rely on students who are busy/overworked enough as is (not to mention are used to poor pay) and who will think of the performance as more of a 'life experience' or 'opportunity' rather than a job.
Also 2 of my friends got COVID the week of so they didn't even get to perform (and the rest were on screen for literally 5 seconds).

I understand that it is easy to say "don't volunteer" from the outside, because it seems like a big opportunity, but if "volunteers" don't stop performing and rehearsing for free, noone will stop taking advantage of them. Calling them out won't make the decision makers of these production companies more sensitive. Absense of staff to work for free will. Also, if there is not a union of dancers or extras to collectively put pressure to employers, people will always stay unprotected, thus prone to exploitation

It‘s insane how common it is to hire talents without pay. As a photographer I was shocked when I first heard that most magazine shoots are completely unpaid for anyone involved, because it is „an honor“ that your work (and face, you are the model) is displayed in a huge magazine, when that magazine would in fact have the money to pay you. Same with concert and festival photography- you don’t get payed and usually have to pay for transportation and accommodation yourself. Mostly these „free opportunities“ just end up costing you money and it’s normalizing getting hard work for free:(

In 2015 when Katy Perry performed at the Super Bowl in AZ, I was a freshman at a high school nearby (Corona del Sol) and they actually reached out and recruited a bunch of marching band kids to act as these “movers” since we already knew how to follow basic choreography and stick to a mark on the field. At the time it seemed like a cool opportunity, and our band director got us excused from classes which made it more enticing, but there were a LOT of rehearsals and they were all pretty long. I got pretty behind on homework for a couple months.
And yeah, we didn’t actually get to stay for the game, and nobody was paid (which I think is different with high schoolers for legal reasons?), but we did get to keep the black jumpsuits they had us perform in, and we all got a sneak preview of left shark (there was one dancer who always kinda lagged even in rehearsals) so like dub I guess?

I took it to make my resume look better, because right now people hesitate to hire me because I have no experience in the science field as a job and my previous jobs were temporary positions which make it look like I can't hold a job. I worked my butt off for six months, often times being the only one working while the actual employees chatted, and I got paid NOTHING. When I asked for a couple days off to go to my graduation ceremony (I had to travel to another state), I had to make it up by working a few ten hour days. They would purposefully give me the less desirable work because they didn't want to do it. Sometimes I worked weekends because then they would actually pay me for those two days, but that meant that I worked twelve days in a row on multiple occasions. But this is somehow justifiable because I was an intern?? Incredibly frustrating. Such a scam.

my friend in high school was a back up dancer for one of the smaller superbowl performances (i forget who it was, but i think he was from atlanta when the superbowl happened in atlanta a few years ago) and she was out of school for like 2-3 weeks and would come for like first n second period then leave to go to rehearsal downtown every day. she wasnt paid and also was technically doing it illegally bc the dancers had to be 18 but they never asked for ID from any of the dancers which is how she did it at 15. can confirm on the pay and no food or phone thing, at least for back up dancers, bc she would get home at 9/10ish n text me she finally ate that day. she also had to sign a long ass contract for it (again, as a minor) that was basically an NDA. for her, she wants to get into performing for a living so i can see why she did it, but its also so awful how they ran things and that aspiring artists are expected to take unpaid work that disrupts their lives for only “exposure” (they didnt even show the backup dancers on TV for that performance)

So basically they had to PAY a college tuition to perform the super bowl and massively jack up their semester grades.

I see a big problem with presenting an opportunity as volunteerism and then using manipulative and coercive tactics to get people to participate. I'm not sure if I totally agree with the thesis that all labor should be paid, because I do believe there are justifiable cases for volunteer based operations. But this is a big money making venture for the league, the venue, the network, and if they are making big money, the labor they employ should have a share.

Hey Gabi!! I definitely respect your take on this 100%. There’s one thing I would love your opinion on. So I’m someone who’s heavily involved in Community Theater in the New England area. I love what I do. A lot of these places where I’m from are small production companies that put up shows because we all love doing it. In fact I just finished a show tonight lol. I spent 3 months doing rigorous Rehearsals, worked my butt off, and put up an awesome show and it was all for free, for fun. We all volunteered. While there are SOME production companies in the area that offer pay, most don’t. But none of us ever think of it this way. We don’t get fed, we don’t get transportation. But our love for the theater, to sing dance and act, drives us to do this and we have a wonderful time doing it. Just wanted to know your opinion on that considering you said anything that you put time and work into you should get paid for. What makes the two different? Beyond the obvious “ones the SUPERBOWL and the other is a small production of a show in Mass” again, completely respect your take!!! Just wanted to open the dialogue 😊

well you didn't ask for my opinion, but I have an experience that reminds me of this. Last year I was offered an "opportunity" to work with a very big company that organizes trips for students to the US to study English (I'm from Southamerica). I know the students pay A LOT of money, because I considered doing it before finding out the price. Even so, I as a teacher who would accompany the kids travelling (they were underage), wouldn't be paid, wouldn't be told how many hours and days I'd have to work there, and the flight wasn't even included (plane tickets to US are extremely expensive). Everything they offered was food, stay in the school over there, and *experience*. So I obviously said no. I have taught for free, but in spaces that I know couldn't pay me and because I believed in my work there.
It's not the same working for a project that you believe in, which you know doesn't have money involved because nobody is making money really but you do it bc you enjoy it, than working for a gigantic production / corporation that knows they can have free labor and they don't give a shit about using your time and effort for free. The superbowl makes millions with views, tickets and advertisement. There's no reason why they wouldn't be able to pay everyone that works for the show. The fact that they don't do it, it's because they can get away with it

I was in the industry for a long time. Any dancer or actor who has ever booked a few jobs knows that you DO NOT put extra roles on your resume. It is not a thing. The people being aimed at are just people who move well and who want to experience the superbowl- you would be surprised that many people, esp. fans of the artists, loveeee to watch rehearsals. So basically it's you get to watch the rehearsals of an artist you like and you get to see their show for free in exchange for your time. Now, they should just reach out to Central Casting, pay a regular extra fare, offer their background actors Krafty services for food and call it a day. I have no idea why they are being that cheap about it and someone somewhere from the union should say something. But either way nobody is putting this on their resume and anyone who is, is so far outside of the industry that this stint as an extra at the superbowl would not get them anywhere anyways.

    • @tyler_3lz988

Science research runs on free labor. It's terrible. If you don't have perfect grades, the only way to guarantee you get a good honors thesis placement (free labor required for you to graduate) is to volunteer for free all summer in a lab. Paid positions for undergrads and grad students are based on grants/stipends so they are legally allowed to pay half of minimum wage while still require 45+hr work weeks. All of science and medicine runs on this basis of exploitative labour from undergrad and grad students.

So profile icon, notifications, emotes, overlay, etc. I said I'd see what I could come up with. After making the profile picture, they then said "oh and I can't really pay for this tbh. Can you just hook me up as a friend?" Like how about hook me up as a friend and pay me. At least buy me a pizza or something. I politely said it would have to be on my back-burner and quietly never finished it because they practically ghosted me anyway. Getting paid in "exposure" statistically only results in maybe 1-2% click through to a purchase. So if 100 people were explicitly given links and contact info to my work, maybe 1 or two would actually buy a commission.

I kinda get why artists would do this for free, it's kinda like there super bowl advertising spot and the label probably views it as a valueless opportunity to have their artist in front of millions without having to invest the labels money for advertising, especially if they have a new album or single out. but also by doing so the super bowl will get used to it an won't pay artists out for the performance in future unless the industry really turns round and demands, but then they could just get smaller artists to do it who'd be super eager to have millions listen to their music.

When I attended * unnamed university in SoCal * as a music major, we would often act as the ensemble for headliners in LA and Hollywood (Andrea Bocelli, John Williams, etc.). Several weeks of rehearsals led up to the performances, during which we would often spend hundreds of dollars on transportation, as well as up to 9 hours a day on set without dressing rooms or break areas. Meanwhile, our university was pocketing the money and never let us see a dime of it. Because we were still students and not yet members of any union for professional musicians, we were cheap labor and easy to exploit. We were expected to behave and perform at a professional level, but not to be treated or paid as such.
Side Note: The Bocelli family and J.W. were always kind to us, so I hold no ill will towards them!
