Just like when my mom remembers a weird-ass commercial and takes me down the wildest rabbit holes I can imagine. Except Gabi wrote a script and got paid.
Hot diggity damn, it finally happened. A video about a very obscure niche thing that actually concerns me. I remember the 8 years of research I did before daring to purchase my first Indy hat. And to this day I think that I might have been too hasty. Another fun rabbit hole concerns the second-most iconic item of Indy's gear: the whip. Trying to find the perfect whip to complement a full Indy ensemble did indeed result in me learning how to make quality whips from scratch. I started learning around 16 years ago, and I'm now at a point where I'm reasonably satisfied with the results. Plus, I got to do some fun custom orders for my friend who works as a dominatrix. @@jacobsnelson1Decades ago, I saw a David Morgan interview where he also says they even made some with steel cable cores that were fastened to objects for swinging on.
I recently went to David Morgan’s website to see how much one of his whips cost. First off, insanely expensive, but I guess that’s what you get when you’re known as the guy/company who makes the whips for Indiana Jones. Second the waiting time, which I never considered before, but if you do have the $1,200-$1,500 to buy one of his whips, there’s a 12 to 14 month waiting period to get one, so they’re definitely hand making these to order.

Hey just wanted to say amazing video! I’m unfortunately one of those fans who care way too much about the hat history. I did want to say that Indygear is a great resource but it hasn’t been fully updated in a little bit so some of the pages don’t have the most recent info. A couple years ago Herbert Johnson got a new hatter, Michelle, who spent a lot of time sourcing hats from Mr. Swales during the raiders era in order to recreate the perfect Raiders hat and match weight and color of the felt. So Herbert Johnson is now back on the map and now considered THE place to get a hat among most Indy fans again.
At least his boots never changed. Always the Alden 405, still made in Massachusetts to this day, great boot. They were Harrison Ford's own boots from doing carpentry also.
I have been an indie fan since the 90's and although i knew a lot of what you shared Im still in love with the fact you so randomly dropped this video. Please, continue making random stuff for us.

I loved this! I think costume design is so interesting. I am always fascinated by channels like Mina Le or Modern Girls which break down costume design or fashion concepts and it can be so much more than just an outfit.
I am from Indiana and my last name is literally Jones. I have been obsessed for quite some time, with the franchise. I was lucky enough to live in Los Angeles from 2006 to 2009, where I stumbled across a shop the Iguana Vintage Shop, where I bought a Bailey brand Fedora. They had been in business since 1922. I had combed the Universal Studios shops and basic halloween shops for his hat. The only difference in my hat is a hemmed edge. I paid $40 for it in 2010, and it is still everything to my costume. I loved this episode, and was geeked to find out the super fans ended up making the hats for the movie. Stay nerdy my friends!! But for real if you are in LA visit the Iguana store as they get costumes off the Hollywood lots all the time. I wore my hat while watching this episode.
I have the same DVD box set😅 Also, I loved this video and the fact the new movie hats are “fan made” just makes me indescribably happy! That’s so cool!
Wholesome success story for that meganerd. We love to see it. Thanks for delving into obscure subjects. Hope your dad gives more recommendations like that.
Great suggestion from your Dad. I liked how he knew you were covering a certain topic and he gave you merch relating to it. My Dad was the same way, I'd tell him that I was looking into an musical group and the next time I visit a CD from that group is in his hands.
This was a major nostalgia trip for me. Even though I'm just barely turning 20, I grew up watching these movies with my dad. We'd even go to summits that some people on the forum hosted. They were some of the nerds that knew a lot about the different materials and makers of the hats- even getting some of their own. Dad's still got an Indie costume put together somewhere with one of those hats.
Great video! I'm one of those nerds too, and loved the mention of the site! Brilliant stuff! The hat for Dial of Destiny isn't AB sadly though, it's back at Herbert Johnson this last time out! And they did a really good job on it! Steve has retired and the director chose to take it back to the source, now that HJ have a superb block and a great hatter to nail the details! (She's a great person too!)
I absolutely love the fact that your dad sent you a ton of stuff when you said you'd do the episode 😂 Send him the best greetings from random viewer 48651 ❤
I had one of those Stetson's in the 90s. I macramed a rainbow band for it and wore it often One night I'm sitting on the front porch of a friend talking with their neighbor (fellow on spectrum) about how much I adored Tom Clancy's books, which turned to him mentioning that Ford was his favourite actor. This prompted me to run in, grab the hat, ahow him the Indy logo and give it to him. His face absolutely lit up as he put it in his head and rode off on his oversized tricycle to show it to his mom and sisters. He was so happy to have it and so proud to show it off.
You find and then make the weirdest information so fun and interesting. Love the unique niche deep dives. Also, loving the transition humming. it's very cute 😊
I seem to remember there being a behind the scenes bit during The Last Crusade where Harrison Ford jokes about the hat staying on and proceeds to take an empty staple gun and squeeze the trigger a few times while moving it about on the hat on his head.
I grew up on Dr. Jones! I remember my Dad having a box full of the VHS movies I watched all the time. I studied history and antyhropology in college because these movies sparked my interest! You got a new subscriber!
As an enjoyer of Quentin Tarantino’s movies (not a “fan” but I’ve loved every movie I’ve seen from him). He’s definitely a weirdo. I don’t think anyone is denying that. But his film expertise is pretty unmatched for any famous director. Not just techniques, but knowledge of movies in general. He’ll pull some kind of style/editing/technique from some obscure 50’s Swedish B movie he saw as a kid and use it in a film he’s working on. Great director. Does not always mean great person.
I really agree, it's very easy to just say he's "the feet guy" or "the violence guy" or "the overlong self-indulgent movies guy". None of those are wrong, but it's a pretty reductive way of looking at a genuinely creative and artistic director.
Guy's weird as hell and from what I can gather, has done and said his fair share of shit that's simply out of line, but as a filmmaker he clearly knows what he's doing, and hearing him speak about cinema and art in general is quite interesting.
wow. my mom is gonna be SHOOK when i tell her tom selick was gonna be indiana jones. so will my grandpa, as raiders of the lost ark is his favorite movie ever. he talks about how it's a masterpiece a lot. it so wholesome.
This is a great video. I am a huge fan of the Indy films and have always noticed that the hat changed over the films. It made sense to me because hats wear out. He even had various whips for each film. However... you pointed out facts I had no idea. I am now subscribed and ALSO think your dad should suggest more vids for you. Thanks for the info.
I showed the new film's trailer to my mom without saying anything. She didn't know they were making another one. When the silhouette of the hat appeared she immediately got up from her chair and screamed "INDIANA JONES???", and her eyes glued to the screen. I think she didn't even blink for two whole minutes lol. I'll be so mad if the movie ends up being bad... but there's hope. I trust James Mangold.
I think this is one of your strongest videos. Not only an interesting topic (thanks gabi's dad!) but the execution, organization, level of research, and genuine enthusiasm (rather than poking fun at) made it such a pleasure to watch! Keep up the good work 🎉
4:09 Fun fact: Lucas actually didn’t want Ford BECAUSE he used him in Star Wars and American Graffiti, and didn’t want to be a director who uses the same actors
I'm sorry but I've never clicked on a video faster! I once went on an adventure to aquire said hat when the ride 1st came to the park. I had to return years later for the whip also from Disneyland. You're dad is the best & so are you! ❤
Just a clarification about 7:55 - that scene wasn't improvised. For the nerds who care, it IS true that Ford (and a lot of the crew) were suffering from dysentery...and it IS true the swordsman has been practicing a very choreographed sword routine for several days...but, according to Ford, it wasn't improvised. He said he went to Spielberg and said, "Steven, I'm not able to stay out of my dressing room for very long at a time and this sword fight is supposed to take 4 days to film. How about we just shoot this sonofabitch?" He said Steven's response was, "I was just thinking the same thing!" and they re-blocked the scene and shot it in less than an hour. Plus, it's obvious from the actions of the extras and the camera placement that the entire scene is scripted, blocked and planned. But it's a fun urban legend to imagine that Ford improvised the whole thing on the spot.
i think a lot of "did you know this scene was actually improvised" usually translates to "the script writers came up with this, but the actor on set decided it would be funnier/easier/better if we did it this way, and so we kinda did that scene on the fly not according to the original script." same with heath ledger in the dark knight, the hospital scene has been confirmed to not be improvised, because of course it wasnt.
I remember at the Great Movie Ride at Disney World, there was a fact about Raiders that they purposely had Indy never lose his hat because the 1940s serials usually had heroes' hats stay on during any fight or action scene. There was also something about how it was considered to be poor taste for a gentlemen to be without his hat. Also respect to Gabi for being able to make a video about Indy and not resort to being one of those idiots that goes "hur dur there's only 3 films. What 4th film? We're so clever" KOTCS isn't that bad and the haters online are so annoying for trying to gatekeep the series
What? She said she got the 3 films and tons of extra stuff showing the box with all 4 films. Isn't that exactly what you are talking about? *cough* simp *cough*
The whole Indiana Jones fandom is rather unique. It spans generations, all nations, and all walks of life, and engenders a very deep love of the franchise, yet there isn't that much media to consume or that much merchandise compared to something like Star Wars, so you get people who are super into all of it and know everything about what little there is. These people often have high priced replicas (usually a collection of the artifacts) or real props displayed, they collect and replicate super detailed clothing from the films, and they have an encyclopedic knowledge of not just the films and their productions, but also all the novels, comics, the tv show, video games, and toy lines. They have the amount of love the most devoted fans of large franchises have, but it's focused on a much smaller area of culture. They also make a staggering amount of fan films, of varying quality. They train with whips in their backyards, just in case they ever have to swing across a canyon or disarm a gunman. They're dedicated, and I see hat specific posts almost every day.
This is like when you work in a restaurant and then your parents come to eat. But the youtuber version. It's really cute you made a video for your dad!
This is the perfect content for 4am when you can't sleep. Thank you, mid-90s obsessive freaks, for setting the stage for a nice factoid to soothe my brain.
To be honest, you could do an episode on every part of that iconic costume. The whole costume is true in that at a glance, it appears like something you could find anywhere, but every article of clothing is not like anything you'll find in any store. There's even a story on why the boots wound up being the boots used. It's good that there's nerds and enthusiasts for genres of all kinds. Sometimes, those are the very people productions turn to when things would have otherwise had their history lost to time.
I love that fan story stuff, they love something so much they got into the field just to enjoy it and then get picked up by the IP. Something like that happened for someone they brought on to help with the Sonic movie redesign too. Really uplifting stuff
I think the hat he wears on the steps of the government building at the end of the movie, is the grey travel hat that he wears earlier on the plane journey to Nepal. How he got that hat back from there is a mystery too. Perhaps he just gets people around the world to mail his stuff back to himself. 😃

I wore my hat while watching this episode.
hat's off to you for making this video when nobody else would dare
I have the same DVD box set😅
Also, I loved this video and the fact the new movie hats are “fan made” just makes me indescribably happy!
Her poor father, getting tortured by Gabi not making a video of Indiana’s hat
This was a major nostalgia trip for me. Even though I'm just barely turning 20, I grew up watching these movies with my dad. We'd even go to summits that some people on the forum hosted. They were some of the nerds that knew a lot about the different materials and makers of the hats- even getting some of their own. Dad's still got an Indie costume put together somewhere with one of those hats.
As a huge Indiana Jones fan, I loved this video so much. Another nice one, Gabi!
Came for Gabi, stayed for hat
I absolutely love the fact that your dad sent you a ton of stuff when you said you'd do the episode 😂
Send him the best greetings from random viewer 48651 ❤
Gabi is good at telling us cases we never knew were interested in 👀
I had one of those Stetson's in the 90s.
I macramed a rainbow band for it and wore it often
One night I'm sitting on the front porch of a friend talking with their neighbor (fellow on spectrum) about how much I adored Tom Clancy's books, which turned to him mentioning that Ford was his favourite actor.
Great video! Every part of Indy's costume tells a story, but the fedora itself shines brightest. Fortune and glory, kid!
I seem to remember there being a behind the scenes bit during The Last Crusade where Harrison Ford jokes about the hat staying on and proceeds to take an empty staple gun and squeeze the trigger a few times while moving it about on the hat on his head.
No, he actually stapled it to his head.
As a huge Indy fan and plan on buying the fedora in preparation for the final movie.. I’m so happy I came across this video.
We must all agree to protect Gabi's dad at all cost
2:27 compliment the time in which the movies take place in? Indy got the hat from that older guy in 1912
I've never even watched Indiana Jones, but now I know way too much about his hat
Here’s your chance to become the mega nerd you were destined to be
Same
wow. my mom is gonna be SHOOK when i tell her tom selick was gonna be indiana jones. so will my grandpa, as raiders of the lost ark is his favorite movie ever. he talks about how it's a masterpiece a lot. it so wholesome.
I love it when Indiana Jones says "Hey, I'm Indiana Jones"
I showed the new film's trailer to my mom without saying anything. She didn't know they were making another one. When the silhouette of the hat appeared she immediately got up from her chair and screamed "INDIANA JONES???", and her eyes glued to the screen. I think she didn't even blink for two whole minutes lol.
I'll be so mad if the movie ends up being bad... but there's hope. I trust James Mangold.
James Mangold I trust. It's Disney/Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy that I don't trust.
I think this is one of your strongest videos. Not only an interesting topic (thanks gabi's dad!) but the execution, organization, level of research, and genuine enthusiasm (rather than poking fun at) made it such a pleasure to watch! Keep up the good work 🎉
I love your dad.
Mr. Dad, if you're reading this, great job.
You deserve fortune and glory, sir, fortune and glory...
Who wouldn't want to wear a hat like Indy's, also "that's the dog's name Jr"
His hat is literally a character, that's why it's so iconic
This is like when you work in a restaurant and then your parents come to eat. But the youtuber version. It's really cute you made a video for your dad!
i love your videos on weird stuff so much, you get so passionate about it
nobody but gabi could make me get emotional about a hat
I'd argue Clint Eastwood's hat he used in western movies like For a Fistful of Dollars is the second most iconic film hat.
This is the perfect content for 4am when you can't sleep. Thank you, mid-90s obsessive freaks, for setting the stage for a nice factoid to soothe my brain.
Never miss the chance to bring up Ancient Aliens
Since I've found your channel I've been steamrolling every video you made. Truly genius stuff. Love ya gabi, keep up the good work
"things probably weren't wondering but make you go 'huh'" is the best genre of youtube
Or "wow, I hate Tommy Tallarico"
absolutely adorable that your dad asked you to make this, and the only thing that could make it better is that you DID IT
We the public demand more Gabis dad. This was too wholesome.
"Wanna watch a video about a hat?"
"Nah."
"It's from Gabi and it is ridiculously deep."
"Oh, word?"
Thank you Mr. Gabi's Dad.
Whoever edits these videos has good taste in their love for Age of Mythology music.
I never in a million years thought I would care about this.
You did it, Gabby. You made me care about an old hat 🤠
I love that fan story stuff, they love something so much they got into the field just to enjoy it and then get picked up by the IP. Something like that happened for someone they brought on to help with the Sonic movie redesign too. Really uplifting stuff
When I see a fedora in the wild, I think of Doctor Who first. But that’s just me
nah, that's fezzes
I need at least five subway surfers and family guy clips to stay stimulated, 0/10
you're right, i'm so sorry
"have you ever thought about the history of Indiana Jones' hat?"
Yes. Yes I have. A lot.
No one talks about how Indiana Jones leaves the hat behind on the ship in Raiders, and has a different hat at the end of the movie.
I think the hat he wears on the steps of the government building at the end of the movie, is the grey travel hat that he wears earlier on the plane journey to Nepal. How he got that hat back from there is a mystery too. Perhaps he just gets people around the world to mail his stuff back to himself. 😃
Hahaha, I love this video. Trivia: I´ve watched "Raiders of the Lost Ark" 26 (TWENTY-SIX) times on VHS, and a lot more in other media. I love Indiana Jones. I´ve got not one, but TWO Indiana Jones hats! BUT: man I´ve never noticed the hats were different from movie to movie. Or...you know, cared. And I was also surprised and amazed how deep some fans went when talking about this hat. So, great video! Thanks.
Thank you Gabi I’ve been thinking of Indiana jones and how it had a decent impact on my childhood and figured everyone forgot about it, till this video so truly I appreciate it.
its honestly so warming and great that your dad clearly suggested these things ebcause they were interesting to him and he watches all of your content, and wants you to make more
Indiana Jones hat da 🐐 no 🧢
so true zaqq
I love how passionate your dad was about this
Goddamn love Indiana Jones. Thank you, Gabi's Dad.
thanks for this video. i’m going to school for archaeology and now i have to buy one of these hats for archaeological and aesthetic needs.
only true gatekeepers remember when this was called "The Incredibly Unnecessary History of Indiana Jones' Hat"
Gabi: "Have you ever thought about Indiana jones's hat?"
Me: "part time"
