The only thing I liked about the 2018 rewind is that they removed Pewdiepie due to a controversy and Jaiden managed to sneak in some stuff like his chair

The biggest problem imo is that back I'm the day, a 10-20 minute UA-cam rewind could cover enough of UA-cam to feel fair to all. Now you'd need a couple hours just to mention a tiny bit about every community.
Edit: I loved Mr Beasts rewind because he hit most of the communities that I liked, but this site is still so much bigger than that.

I think what majorly changed in UA-cam rewind was that in its beginning it used to incorporate themes from viral videos that could have been made by anyone while in its later period it relied heavily on creators with pre established brands making cameos.

german being in the rewind for the first time was the biggest thing that happened to hispanic people ever, i remember it so well, it was the best day of our lives. The good thing abt 2014 and further is that they included creators that went far from english speakers! Maybe for- english speakers- it wasnt that important, but for others (like me) was HUGE

2012 seemed unfairly low. The inclusion of Jimmy Fallon seemed ok in the context (he was HUGE on the platform at the time), as it was a small segment in the rewind as a whole, in a way that seemed balanced with the other YT exclusive creators.

As a non-american, even if things were recognizable, they werent something close to heart, yet 2017 was the first one i saw things that were a part of my daily life. The songs, the people, the themes, it was all so close to my suroundings, close to us. And then they RUINED IT but we dont talk abt that-

seeing rhett and link in the 2012 rewind gave me a huge boost of seritonin
i sometimes forget tbh that youtube had so much community to it back in the early 2010s bc i only looked at youtube for music videos (mostly lyric videos though) and a couple major youtubers that i liked. that changed around the mid 2010s and now i am on youtube kind of constantly but i have somehow managed to entirely miss most major creators and a looooot of major trends. so i recognize some of the people in each of the rewinds but with the exception of jenna marbles, it's all people i learned of way later through commentary videos or osmosis of vague internet culture.
it's just so weird to see these little time capsules and i really enjoy watching people talk about them and say what was accurate to the time or not and what was horrible or not. from what i've gathered, i think a big thing the early rewinds have going for them is kinda just that there was less going on. i've heard so many people talk about the early days of youtube when everybody knew who the biggest creators were, and then how there was a shift over time to where there are probably thousands of channels with millions of subscribers and i will probably never know of most of them.
there is such a visceral disconnect between youtube itself and what youtube executives perceive youtube to be, and that has only become increasingly apparent over time. i kinda hope youtube stops trying to do youtube rewinds. i'll take your word for it that the mr. beast rewind was good, but i think 2020 was an exception to the rule specifically in the sense that it was such a severe shared experience. 2019 and 2021 respectively both contained such drastically different individual experiences with youtube and media at large. of course there's still yt giants like pewdiepie and mr beast and jimmy fallon that most people are aware of, but there are simply too many yt channels for the widespread recognition of 2012 to be feasible again.
and yes i have too much free time on my hands, and yeah this topic is not important enough to me to warrant the time it has taken me to write all this out, but idk something in me feels unwell at the thought of responding to a 25 minute video with a comment lasting all of two sentences. anyway. great video, very thoughtful and funny :) i just discovered your channel recently and i'm very much enjoying working my way through all your videos

i enjoyed these pretty well mostly cuz it was just a massive video with lots of people i recognized and made it feel we were all a community together but the longer it lasted and grew it just became an advertisment trying to show all the "child friendly creators" and just tv celebreties and it just became nothing to me really.

The reason you didn't recognize many youtubers at the beginning of rewind 2014 is because they finally acknowledged that there are more than just the standard american youtubers. It prominently features creators from other languages including the biggest german youtuber of that time!
I liked the vid, but I honestly just feel like you weren't in UA-cam back from 2010-2015. Lots of the UA-camrs were very popular back then and even though I haven't watched many of them for years now, I still remember them. The memes back then were also many in the rewinds.
So I just think you have a bit of a bias towards the newer ones.

I would have bumped 2017 to S just because I was recognizing more international (non north american or European) UA-camrs, not SURE if that's when they started doing that, but if it was I would bump to S, I think.

As far as the talk show hosts go, John Oliver specifically I think is allowed. Mostly because I and a lot of people watch his show exclusively on UA-cam.

There's this brazilian youtuber who does a youtube rewind (animated) every year, since i think 2014? It's called Canal Nostalgia (or just "retrospectiva nostalgia" and the year), if anyone wants to check him out- they are all in portuguese and around brazilian events more than general youtube events, but the music choices are great and the animation too

I actually think rewind 2014 was pretty good. The talk show hosts being there briefly was cute and inoffensive. Yes they overtook UA-cam but the other UA-camrs were given more of the spotlight so I’m okay with it.
these rewinds remind me of back in the day when like the wb would do commercials for the whole network where they'd just randomly get all the actors together in a room, like you'd get a random shot of buffy followed by sabrina the teenage witch, and it was the most dissonate thing ever
