- At last ! the steering rack is off and ready for inspection - what should I do with it ??
Welcome back guys to my Porsche 928 restoration! I bought the cheapest 928 in the UK and its going to be a battle to bring her back to life...
... and to make matter worse, Im not a mechanic! Im just a regular guy 'having a go', and it doesn't always work out!
Please remember to like the videos and subscribe to follow my story! and watch until the end where I show the costs of the project! - Авто та транспорт
The Stanley knife is with the oil pump washers.......
lol, most of my tools are...
I have a 79 928 that I bought for $400 US dollars, and have started working on it again, thank you for the inspiration Todd.
Thats great Jeff! what condition is she in?
@@MrToddgibbs Hello Todd, when I got her, the instrument cluster and ignition switch were missing, the passenger door lock was broken and the driver door was dented, there was very little rust, the interior needs quite a bit of work, I was told that it ran when it was parked, the engine turns freely and has what appears to be clean oil and antifreeze, all of the hoses will need replacing, I am going to do a compression test soon, that will determine how I will proceed.
Thank you again for posting your journey, and I am looking forward to seeing your progress,
Cheers,
Hey Jeff - it sounds fairly similar to mine, theoretically it works... its just doesn't yet. Well, mine now doesn't have the engine in, but you know what I mean :) ... I will do a compression test before I put the engine in, might do it soon for a video.... Thanks for watching!
The track rods unbolt inboard of the ball joints (under the bellows). They'll be bloody tight. A big vice and stillsons is often needed. To get the new bellows on... heat them up, lubricate them with silicone and push (and swear)
Thanks Howard, I'll have a crack at them :)
again...I'll get the answer in future videos but the flats are where you unscrew with an open spanner..plus although you couldn't feel any wear, inner ball joints shouldn't flop around like that, you should be able to push in all directions but not flop them
Love that you have included your helper in the project. Keep it up!
Lol it wasn’t by choice :)
I'm enjoying the content!
Thanks Andy, appreciate you watching!
Good one Todd👍
Yes I know what you mean when the box of “Goodies” arrive
In the time I have been working on mine same applies✅
Apprentice is doing a great job,you can’t stop enthusiasm 😃
Cheers Todd
Frank😷
Hey Frank! Hope yours is going smoothly! Thanks for watching :}
Another great vid, still amazes me how many components are packed into a small footprint . I know it's the complicated end of the car but still only 1/3 of the whole vehicle. Getting the rack rebuilt is relatively cheap so do it as insurance.
yeah I agree Gary - I'll get the rack rebuilt, it appears to be weeping from one side. Lets hope the other 2/3s of the car are less complicated :)
I actually did exactly the same but I think i just tried to remove the bolt a little bit earlier :) Great videos Todd, love watching it, you are fast, I have been working on mine for years (engine out and completely done, fuel system, steering rack etc). And you are almost done with that :) My advice, also refurbish your master brake cylinder, and your cooling reservoir with the engine out. I still don't know how I managed to do it after I got the engine in. Take your time with checking the steering rack, it started dripping oil after I replaced the tie rods (they were much worse than yours), but i think i killed the 40 year old seals while installing them again. Cheers From Rotterdam!
Thanks Wopfe, I've slowed down recently with the kids at home, but hope to speed up again soon. Yes I need to do the brake cylinder and was looking at it in wonder just the other day... Im sure that will be another adventure!
Thanks for watching !
I've steered my way through 4 more suspenseful episodes
You're getting into the nitty gritty bits now, glad you are not replacing everyhing and resuiing what looks OK to use again
Good to see your employing cheap labour, my kids now late teens are less pliable to help out with these kinds of jobs
Spoiler alert, they only help once :(
@@MrToddgibbs It doesn't get any better when they get older
Both mine into cars and Mr Muggins is called in for fix its jobs
Fix your 928 and then there is no time to do theirs :)
I was yelling at the screen..."remove the bolt!!!"...;) make sure you review the WSM before each thing you tackle and get a grasp on the parts, it will help a ton.
Tip it and let it rest on each end and see if it leaks fluid. Rotate it so the input shaft is facing down (gravity) and see if it weeps or leaks.
Was there fluid inside the boots? Washing it down first probably removed most of the evidence you would be looking for. I would have done the investigation before washing for future reference.
Hey Dan - yes, I also was yelling at it (you didn't see just how long I fought with it before removing the bolt!). I find the workshop manual too awkward to navigate, its more luck than judgement if I manage to find the correct section!
Ok, will test the rack and post back here. Yes, I should have held off on the washing :(
@@MrToddgibbs "Anything worth doing on a 928 is worth doing 3-4 times." Dan Garner 928 owner/amateur mechanic.
Lol. :). I tested the rack…. I think it’s leaking from the driver side(closest to the mechanism) - rebuild time ….
@@MrToddgibbs Tis the breaks...as they say. ....at least you didn't put it back in. Keep up the good work.
I've been told a proper rack rebuild is over $1000. Do your research before going cheap.
I'd put new bellows back on that rack and chuck it back in. It looks fine to me.
Hi Howard :). I did Dan's test - stand it on each end and wind it back and forth. Im pretty sure one side was weeping. Will check again before I send it off. From what Ive found it seems to be £275+Vat, which doesn't seem too bad for the peace of mind.
Is it easier to use a Stanley knife blade when it's housed in a Stanley knife?
Lol probably… but I can’t find where I put it down!
