- I can't believe the effort and trouble I had to remove the bushes on my Upper Control Arms! only to discover the simplest way ever...
Welcome back guys to my Porsche 928 restoration! I bought the cheapest 928 in the UK and its going to be a battle to bring her back to life...
... and to make matter worse, Im not a mechanic! Im just a regular guy 'having a go', and it doesn't always work out!

I'm no metalurgist... but I'd avoid applying lots of heat to an alloy suspension component. You may be changing the properties of a part that you're going to re-use and is safety critical. On my "can't live without" tool list is a my big bench vice. I use it all the time. Nealr as good as a proper press.
Hi Howard - ah, I didn’t even consider this! Well, hopefully ok! I need a stronger bench before a bigger vice…
Good job. Press and pullers are essential.
Now you tell me :)
Thanks for another great video, you won’t need a jack for the front end soon. Not a big fan of those ring spanners you’re using, they only grab the edges of the nuts/bolts rather than the whole profile but you’re nearly finished stripping at this point anyway. Using the puller was a good idea,I'd just suggest a ratchet strap or something to avoid bending the two arms apart.
lol I laughed at that Gary :) Which spanners? (that time in video?)
Sorry didn't explain that very well, when you were using the seperator and puller a socket set with the bolt profile is better than a ring spanner.
If you've cooked a ball-joint with heat you need to replace it. It's not just the rubber dust cover. They have a nylon part under the ball and that will be toast. I'm not a massive fan of heating things (you can probably tell). There's a time and a place. Exhaust fixings and when there's nothing else to lose typically :)
I think the ball-joints should be ok - I didn't use that much heat - but I'll check them over. Thanks as ever :)
Excellent progress Todd. Your perseverance is paying off as that isn't easy on an old car.
Greetings from Taiwan.
Hey Terry- thanks, you’ve been quiet for a while :(. … yes slowly getting there
@@MrToddgibbs Yes indeed I've been too quiet due to work.
I'll try to make more time to catch up with you in future.
Good one Toddd✅
Your progressing nicely and will be fun when your parts come back from the sandblasting
Haven’t progressed with mine, but that’s ok 👍 just building up strength
Cheers
Frank😷
Thanks Frank - Im still waiting for your channel so I can see how you get on :)
@@MrToddgibbs Hi Todd
If I had the time I would as it may be helpful to other owners👀
I have a business which is very time consuming and sadly the 928 doesn’t get the attention it deserves
There have been ( so called experts) do work on the car, with bad results 😩 and I’m rectifying that as I go along
At least with you working on your car Todd,it will be done correctly ✅
Oh Frank, now you put the pressure on I will have to do it properly! (don't hold me to that!)
Well done Todd, perseverance is the key. The puller was a good substitute in the absence of a press. Just curious, a home shop press goes for about $150 AU down here in OZ, have you ever considered purchasing one? I would if I was doing all the bushes on my Mondial, which is something on the horizon for me. Cheers, Marc
Hi Marc, I don’t think I would need it often enough tbh. I may need one soon but the local garage will help :)
Hi Todd. Thanks for another great vídeo. In no time I will start with the front suspension on the 79 928 I am rebuilding. I am currently taking care of the brake system. If you find time to check on my videos and give me your opinion, it would be great. About the upper control arm, what is your plan for the ball joint? you will keep that one? do you know if it is removable? I can only find complete arms and I have one with the rubber totally destroyed. It would be great to have your opinion on that. Thanks one more time for your great videos.
Hey GoForIt. I’m already subscribed… will watch your brake video tonight :) my ball joints feel ok. But I also need to replace the dust boot/cover. I’m just about to measure and find a UK source. I watched a video about repacking the all joint with grease - will dig it out and post. Thanks for watching :)
@@MrToddgibbs it would be nice to know how you manage to solve that. I am not sure if my ball joint is toasted or if is just the rubber. Anyhow I will be watching your development. By the extent of your intervention in the car you are far more brave than I am, but if you feel I can help with something just let me know.
@GoForIt - braver or more stupid, Im not sure yet ;). Thanks again :)
Leftie lucy righty tighty
Or is it Lucy is right, left is looser? Who knows :)
