Is the torque converter connected with the transmission fluid flow circle ? I mean if I changed the fluid i don’t have to worry about the torque converter?
@dTamerSam , torque converter does not have drain plug
@@repairvehicle alright so I’m just replacing the fluid on transmission pan . Thank you so much 👍
The old style dipstick should have never went away. You have to check this fluid right next to a catalytic converter. These engineers just don't use their heads.
Can't tell you how many times I've burned tf out of my knuckles!
It's the greed.
Yeh it's pretty much engineered in a way you don't do it yourself and bring it in for servicing. They want more money
@@Andomosity I wrapped the converter with turbo lava wrap and SSteel zip ties...works great
I wanted to do a "FLUSH" but after finding out about the bypass valve I didn't want to waste my money so this is what I did. I first drained the pan with a brake bleed suction tool. Replaced the fluid and drove it for a day. I then repeated the same thing. At the beginning of the third time the fluid was almost back to the red color. On the third time I dropped the pan and changed the filter and the fluid. Now the fluud is back to the red color and it has a new filter too. The biggest PITA was the exhaust temps and trying to get the fluid level correct. My truck is a 2014 4X4 and getting to the bolts above the exhaust was impossible without stripping the bolt heads. So I welded a 8mm socket onto the end of an old screwdriver and it allowed me to easily access those 4 bolts without damaging the heads. But thats how I got all of my fluid replaced and the filter. Hope this helps someone in the future.
I just installed a Dorman pan with a plug. Now I can open the plug, measure exact volume and replace. The new filter put in will last the life of the truck.
@@alb12345672 I did that too and love it
Thank u for that service manual snap shot. Changed my fluid and filter checked the fluild after temp was 170F and it was pouring out the top. Now I know why. Thanks again.
You are welcome
You can buy a full length dipstick that mounts underwood. Just make sure to check the fluid level on the stock dipstick vs aftermarket
well i got a surprise when i went to change my fluid and filter and leaking o-rings on the bulkhead conn. on a 2010 f-150 (6r80). on a cold vehicle on level ground. trans. was filled to the top of fill hole!! i guess its been like that for 100,000 miles.(as i bought it new) got everything replaced and re-installed pan. will re-fill tomm. after watching your video i might not fill to overflow, and restart. will check at 3 qts. ( also changed rear diff. and transfer case fluid and front breaks)
When engine is not running it will be filled to the top of the hole. When engine is running the fluid level drops big time and then goes up with temperature.
@@repairvehicle then what good is the cold hash marks?? and where do i fill it??
Transmission fluid is always checked when engine is running. Cold mark is when fluid is cold and engine is running.
You add fluid like I did in my video
@@repairvehicle thank you for the reply. my dumbass figured that out pretty quickly and everything went great!
As long as it’s anywhere in the b box is fine since that’s the box you check while car it’s running and yes it’s a pain in the ass to do this while it’s running but you have to, to get a correct reading it’s even more of a pain to tighten the bolt back in since I have an o2 sensor right next to the dam plug in between the cat it’s like ford does this so nobody would want to service the transmission
I took some Lava wrap for turbos I never used and wrapped the Catalytic Converter securing with steel zip ties and wow, what a difference! Also, mixing half and half synthetic with the old fluid...is there any problem with that?
It depends on which fluids you are mixing together
Do you have to worry about displacing/knocking off the internal filter in the pan when you force the tube in to drain the transmission fluid?
Filter is bolted to the transmission. You not going to damage filter because tube doesn’t go through filter or touch filter
Hello brother thanks for sharing this awesome video! I currently own a 2016 ford f150 5.0 with the 6r80 transmission. I purchased it used with 73k miles, it now has a little over 78k miles. I've researched many youtube videos and read online forums about changing transmission fluid. It seems like most everybody drops the pan and changes the filter. I really like the idea of not having to mess with the pan and avoiding a big mess. I purchased a mightvac fluid evacuator pump and my plan was to suck out the old fluid, assuming i would get 5 quarts or so and use another pump to add new fluid back. As I was about to do this job, a few guys I know said I would be wasting my time if I did not drop the pan and replace filter. So I have stalled the procedure until I gather more information.
So my questions for you are the following
1. Because I don't know the history of this vehicle with 78k miles currently, would it still be ok to just use your method, with pumping out old fluid and adding new? Or do you think because of the higher milage, I should change the filter. Like I said i don't know how well the previous owners maintained the vehicle, but my guess is it hasn't been done.
2. I would obviously check the level on the dipstick first to see if it was sitting at the correct level before extracting fluid. If the fluid level is correct, can I just add what I took out? It seems like a pain to get the vehicle hot and continue to check level.
2. When adding the new fluid , does the truck need to be turned on in park? Or should i have the vehicle turned off? I watched another youtuber, who has the same method as you. But what he did was....pump half of the new fluid back into the transmission with the truck being off and the other half with the truck being on. He said pumping in the same amount of fluid you took out would overfill if the vehicle wasn't turned on. So thats why he split it up like that.
3. Do you possibly have a picture or video of how you added new fluid back into the transmission. I heard you say that you placed a funnel on the antenna and routed it to the fill hole on the transmission. Im curious to see how this works with funnel being on antenna? Or do you have any recommendations on a good pump to add fluid back? I don't want to use the mightvac to add new fluid, it would be a pain to clean and add new fluid.
Please let me know your thoughts. I really appreciate people like you, who give your time to help others. Have a great day man!
This video has answers about filter and for the rest of the questions I will answer later today
Avoid replacing transmission filter, avoid costly transmission repairs, transmission maintenance
ua-cam.com/video/Y2f7dFNP82k/v-deo.html
Thank you watched
answers to your questions.
1. Yes it ok to extract old fluid and replace it with new fluid. If this was my truck I would not bother replacing filter at this mileage.
2. when you remove dipstick fluid will be coming out of the hole and running all over transmission pan. You can add small amount of ATF while engine is not running. To additional amount of fluid engine would have to be running. You can add same amount that came out, however you need to check making sure its correct amount. You need to find out at temperature you can check fluid level, it can at cold or hot.
2. Adding new fluid should be done when truck is in park on level, with engine off. Once fluid starts coming from the fill hole, then you start the truck and keep adding the fluid until dipstick shows correct level.
3. I don't have a video or picture because it was dark and started to rain and I had to hold umbrella to prevent water from gettin inside the funnel. However, I have video that show a funnel and a hose that I have done on tundra, very similar except funnel is under the hood and not hanging on the side of the fender and attached to the antenna by the wire. Watch this tundra ATF for better understanding video ua-cam.com/video/O4aKM4svlaM/v-deo.html
You can use pump to add fluid, something like this should work amzn.to/3OpPGOp
Or something from this list depending on your budget amzn.to/3zQVEUq
Hopefully I have answered your questions.
@@repairvehicle wow thank you so much for all of the information. Really appreciate it! So at what mileage would you recommended a new filter? Or just keep doing fluid changes every 30,000 and if everything is ok just leave it?
If you are towing and hauling on regular basis, 100k miles or 7 years which ever comes first. Otherwise I would not until truck is between 10-15 years old or 150k miles which ever comes first. I am referring to filter.
Yes, 30-40k miles fluid change or 4 years which ever comes first.
What size tube fits inside. I’ve over filled my fluid when changed the filter today. 😢
I don’t remember, but this tool simplifies Transmission fluid change tool is ultimately best thing ever, lifetime warranty and ease of use
ua-cam.com/video/tuDtQoz4J1A/v-deo.html
Have you ever change fluid via Trans Cooler Line?
No, I don’t want to destroy my transmission. Drain and fill safe and effective without causing any transmission damage.
Give us a update on how the transmission runs with fluid change after 80000. I changed my car at 85 000 as soon as I bought it saw huge improvement
Definitely update will be coming.
@@repairvehicle where is the update?
Update in this video ua-cam.com/video/3T9rzPtKIp0/v-deo.html
Back when I was a fat fk (~60" waist) I was still able to easily slide under a stock height Expedition, and use an Irwin long nose offset pliers to check the fluid level without burning my hand. If one ends up fudging this procedure, they really shouldn't be working on trucks. Good video nonetheless 👍
Thank you that helps a lot buddy
Is it a good idea to mix fluids? You probably took out less than half of the original mercon but added amsoil, I'm asking cause..while on.my old 4runner i did a full flush and changed to full.synthetic on my 2016 f150 ( 50.000 kms) was thinking just to do a drain and refill..but add mercon fluid ..
yes it good idea when comes to Amsoil ATF. I have verified via oil analysis and lab results on my channel.
Thanks for the video. I should mention that the final check must be made with the fluid at 190 F degrees or hotter. This crap really expands when it heats up. The truck also must be running when checking the fluid. The tranny cooler also is valved off when the fluid is cold. If you get it anywhere near full when cold, it will be terribly overfilled when it heats up. Also, if the truck's not running when you open the cap, 2 - 1/2 quarts of fluid will pour out of the dipstick hole. Have fun. "𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘏𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘐𝘥𝘦𝘢!"
Have you seen this phone mount, available for your truck too ua-cam.com/video/gd73_dyk7UM/v-deo.html
Was it ok after this? Because I think mine was overfilled and made it shift erratically?
It was better than before.
@@repairvehicle I'm glad to hear the update
If you didn’t do a complete flush then you’re mixing synthetic with non. Just a heads up.
Complete flush still mixing both fluids
So just to get it straight. I check the cold level with engine running and fluid cold? And i check the warm level with engine running and fluid up to temp? Pretty much engine has to be running at all times?
What did I say in the video? Did you watch video without skipping?
@@repairvehicleI did watch the whole video. I just wanted to be sure I understood correctly but nevermind thanks
My 2013 f150 owner's manual says trans oil should be checked by authorized dealer and doesn't even give any info on how to read dipstick.
Of course, they want your money. It's your truck, you have the right to do anything with it.
Watch this video, I am using Nissan atf and Nissan as an example how dealers use fear to take advantage of people. ua-cam.com/video/WMVGlI5LV8M/v-deo.html
Does the trans oil get to operating temperature just by leaving it in park and letting it idle for a while? Or do you have to lift drive tires off the ground and let it idle in drive for a few minutes?
Idling in park, will get atf temperature up.
This type of fluid service likely replaced no more than about 50% of old fluid. Doing this two or even three times might be necessary to be effective... Second time would bring it to about 75%, third 87.5% etc...
Of course, but doing it once is better than not doing it at all
@@repairvehicle True!
Nice video, and hows feel the transmission now wit the new atf fluid! As this day !
It feels great. Big difference
Cool, i know now, wat kind of atf fluid that i gonna used in my next transmission change fluid!!
Now there was some old fluid still in .u weren't nervous mixing synthetic and regular b4 .I was told not good .I know it's not easy on this transmission .I'm going attempt tomorrow
Mixing amsoil with factory fluid is perfectly normal and actually works really good. I will be uploading lab results soon, maybe today.
Where did you get that picture of the service procedure at time 8:23? The picture that shows the dipstick fill levels/ hashmarks. Thanks!
I bought a service manual on DVD from eBay. Why not replace with the exact amount that came out of it warm the transmission up and then check it?
In my case it was low on fluid big time. How do you know you have correct amount in your transmission right now?
@@repairvehicle Did you find the reason why the fluid was low?
@@landoncarter6452, no did not. There's no way to find out. Who knows if it's from factory low or someone else was messing with it.
I did that and still had to add 1 1/2 quarts low. Installed a oil pan with a plug but is supposed to be the same as OEM.Still scratching my head about how come could be low from factory. Also reseted the ECM after the change.
Are you the original owner?
Is this the similat transmission to 2015 transit f-150 EcoBoost?
yes
Can u just do it using the oil lines?
?
What was the total you added ?
I don't remember, it's in the video
How fluid sir?
Excellent
Why not a drain plug ?
Ford does not have drain plug, only Toyota has it
If you’re going to drop the pan you can install an aftermarket drain plug. Then you won’t have to drop it next time. I don’t believe you have to change the filter every time either. I picked one up off Amazon.
Yah I bought an aftermarket Transmission plate on Amazon and it comes with a built-in drain plug. It's great!
Are you from.... Egypt?
No
Been hounding my father to change his fluid... He takes care of everything else but leaves the transmission because the manual seems to indicate it's ok. I said it's not in their interest to keep your now well out of warranty vehicle working. I another family member has a Toyota with "lifetime fluid" and I changed it at 60k, it was smelling fairly burnt, but not as bad as your Ford fluid looked.... That is toast.
Have you seen lab results for this fluid ua-cam.com/video/b0ar707Kx1Y/v-deo.html
Lifetime transmission fluid is basically a scam.
I put 8 qt in my … there nothing marking in the dipstick ..
how is it running?
@@repairvehicle 2nd gear is kicking …
too much fluid?
Ya a really bad and dumb way they changed the way to check it
One of the biggest mistakes Ford ever designed.
it's not even Ford. This transmission like many other transmission ford has is German engineered by ZF company, that makes transmission for German cars. Instead of buying complete transmission from ZF for bough the rights/license to build them in house.
What do you have and year?
@@repairvehicle Thanks for the video, 2011 Expedition just buttoned it up after watching your video. I think it will be interesting to see what the future holds for repairs on EVs and current gen 4 cycles.
Electric cars have very bad future in terms of repairs. Aftermarket parts not available and they will never be available until patent released.
Just let it cool down first
You supposed check fluid level when it's hot and engine running.
If (as you indicated) at 81,000 miles the transmission fluid on your 2013 F150 had never been changed before you performed this service, why didn't you just insert five quarts of new transmission fluid to replace the five quarts you extracted?
Atf fluid evaporates overtime. However, if you changing more frequently, you could just add same amount that came out. Thank you for questioning attitude.
@@repairvehicle Bwahahahaha! Evaporates???
@@eegg6954 , you have never seen project farm videos where atf evaporates during his testing?
@@repairvehicle Well I'll be.
@@repairvehicle That may be true, but the 6R80 operates under vacuum and is not a vented transmission so evaporation would not be an issue.
