      @fordtechmakuloco if you have the time to possibly answer a question of mine I had to change my transmission lines and radiator , tranmission cooler and a few other miscellaneous parts after completion the transmission wouldn’t register reverse or 1st gear. After about 20 minutes or so of idle the transmission would allow me to drive shift perfectly fine go into all gears. No grinding no bad smells no hard shifts nothing . If I let the vehicle cool down I have to repeat to drive it again since this happened I haven’t driven it more than 2 miles total to avoid any potential damage I checked my fluid I was almost a quart low so I followed your steps to top it off. Currently waiting for it to cool again to see if I have all my gears now. Is there anything else I should do or some kind of advice you could please give me

      Regardless what it's based on, automakers are so cheap nowadays they gotta save the $3 per car or whatever to create a dipstick tube..!!? and yes it is absolutely possible for this vehicle really just make a hole instead of threads and put a dipstick and tube... ..

    Just did my second transmission fluid change this past weekend on my 2010. It's only been 65,000 kms since I had it in a Mr. Transmssion for a new torque converter and they serviced the transmssion too (I can only assume they used Mercon LV, *it's been nagging me to change it since and waiting for nice spring weather to do it*), and the old fluid came out pretty dark red. Not as bad as the first time I did it when it had over 300,000 on it >_< my mistake on that, that time it came out about as black as used oil (thanks Ford "sealed for life" hahaha). I found this cool "1 Litre Bottle Pump" at Princess Auto here in Ontario, Canada.. With its blue push down pump handle and it has the cool 45 degree hook end on it. It fits the top of a 1 quart Mercon LV bottle perfectly!!! Makes the refill part a breeze. Even taking the pan down isn't too bad of a chore following your other video; I have a HUGE clear plastic under bed tote I use as a catch pan, an old bed sheet and a tonne of old cardboard boxes laid around to catch any other drips. I'll prolly turn a transmission fluid change into a yearly thing now seeing how bad the fluid was at only 65,000 kms though, wow! FWIW I put about 70,000 kms on the truck yearly these days for the work I do.

    For working around a hot cat, I grabbed a flexible "nut grabber" claw to hold and manipulate the dipstick, welding gloves, and an articulating ratchet wrench so the 19mm socket can be flipped over 180deg, and to avoid melting the fill pump hose, hooked it front of the coolant lines back to the fill. No burns!

      I checked the fluid this morning after about a half hour of in-town errands (ambient temp - 32*F). I'm guessing that I overfilled if, when I took out the dipstick, fluid spilled out of the hole? I quickly recapped the fill/dipstick after loosing maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 cup.

    I changed the fluid and filter in my 6R75 in an expedition. I opened that cap today after a drive and fluid came pouring out, I started the truck hot in park at idle and checked it after it poured out and the dipstick says the fluid is right between the hashes. I checked it because my trans has been acting odd, are these dipsticks that incorrect? It says the fluid level is perfect but fluid comes out when you open the dipstick cap. Should I put in a new transmission now since its acting up?

    I have a 14 F-150 EB. I just recently serviced the trans at work dropping the pan fluid and filter. My question is what is a suitable temp to check when hot, and the reason I ask is because the service manual in Mitchell mentioned a minimum temp of 200 or 210 degrees which seemed a little to high to me.

    Used my welding glove, and a backhand heat shield. Made checking full hot a piece of cake, even on jack stands. Any risk of damaging an 07 6R60 by using the LV going forward, and is there cross contamination issues after a filter change? I know SP is in there right now.

    7.5 quarts for drain & fill. At first it will overflow at about 6 quarts, then start it and shift to D, R, and then Park. It will then take another 1.5 quarts. Check fluid while running, level and in park. Only use Motorcraft Mercon LV. Don't burn your hand.

    When I was loosening fill cap to change fluid/filter, a few drips of fluid immediately started coming out. When I took the pan off and drained the fluid I only got about 5 1/2 quarts out. I don't get why it seemed to be so full but yet only got that much out. Sat overnight and engine was cold when I drained it. Thinking truck was not level enough and there's still fluid in the front of trans because back end was up to high?

    Can someone explain the concept of "vacuum" in the unit? When I did mine, I removed the plug cold and nothing came out. Now I'm surprised because when I filled it up, it was on the top of the stick(cold), then ran it, and the level dropped. Therefore, I can add more fluid. I should be overflowing with the motor shut down.
    Is the vacuum the reason why I didn't get an overflow when I originally pulled the plug on the cold unit? Oh, I didn't hear any air movement either.

    This video helped me a lot. For some reason it took 8 quarts but when it’s on the dip stick shows no fluid. This didn’t account for the new torque converter. Hopefully this fixes p0731. As there no burning smell to the fluid or bad discoloration.

With Not changing out the filter , I’m I still looking at adding 4.5 quarts, warming and then adjusting the level up to 7.5 or will it be less? Also, is it a good idea to buy a filter and have it on hand in case the oring gets damaged or can I buy that separate? Thanks again. Also I’m not opposed to just replacing the filter every 30 if needed?

    Big problem with mine. Any help would be great. .... I did my trans filter and fluid but that plug over the dipstick was very difficult to remove. Once I got it out, I noticed aluminum threads on the steel plug. The top of the trans housing female threads had stripped. Putting it back it just won’t get tight and is slightly cocked so the o-ring won’t seat. Now I’ve got a leak after driving. I’d like to drill it out and put in something oversized but can find anything aftermarket. Any ideas?

    I'm having a hell of a time finding a dealership who will change my filter and top my fluid off ('13 F-150). So I guess I'm going to try it myself. I found the hook part of the tool in this video...but it doesn't seem to be threaded to fit onto a bottle or pump. What's the deal with that? It's going to be very hard to not get burned by the catalytic converter while trying to adjust the fluid. This is going to suck.

    • @4-LOW
      @4-LOW 8 років тому +1

      Ok so I used a cheap fluid pump from the auto parts store and put a longer hose on it and that worked great. I bought a heat resistant glove off Amazon and that was definitely necessary to finish this job. But my problem is that I put 7.5 quarts in and it started running out of the fill hole with engine running. It appeared that I got about 7 quarts out maybe a little more. I put 7 quarts in, checked it, and it was at the bottom of the stick. So I put another quart in and as I was pumping it came running out of the fill hole. What's up with that?

    FordTech, just replaced my bulk head connector based on another video of yours and and all seems well. Just one thing about the fluid level adjustment.
    I am getting inconsistent results on the dipstick. May latest attempt to check was while running after driving a few miles. While running I checked and it showed as if it was over full. Tried again and one side showed as if it was over full and the other side was low. So, I thought maybe I am sliding in on the side and it is not a true reading. Tried yet again and looks full. Not wanting to be over full, I turned off the motor thinking if it is over full it will run back out the fill spot when the engine is off. Is that not the case? After turning off none came out. Any suggestions on how to get an accurate reading? Seem to drive and shift well. thanks.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  8 років тому +5

      +trailscavenger It wont necessarily run out no. Tow different levels on the stick are common with automatic transmissions. What I generally see is the lower reading sometime on the backside of the stick is the actual reading. What you have to realize is fluid flowing around in the pan can splash or wave onto the dipstick and create a higher mark where as creating a lower mark is not possible.

      Exactly, man Im glad I read this. I'm having the exact same issue. I've checked it cold and hot and I cant ever seem to get an accurate reading. This has become suchban aggravating endeavor and simply adjusting the fluid level accurately shouldn't be this difficult. I check it warm and get it to the bottom of the hash marks,then drive it till operating temp and check again and it shows over full.Drain half a quart out,drive again,check again and it shows low.What a screwed up system. I wish Brian would make a video and say whether the vehicle is running or not and if the transmission is warm,hot or cold. Hell man,dont worry about the engine sound we can get past that.Accuracy is more important especially when a new transmission cost 2500.00 or more. I guess I can always quit bitching and takebit to the dealership. SMFH!!!!!!!!!

    I have a 2010 F150 5.4L 6R80 with 148,000 km, I had my transmission flushed by a local dealer back in the summer. Recently I noticed it is starting to have the hard down shift from 2nd to 1st and when it's cold there is about a 2 second delay when shifting from P to R but not going into D or any other gear. When up to temp the trans shifts normally. Could this be caused by a low level or is there more going on with the trans. I asked the dealer to drop the pan and change the filter but the advisor told me they don't do that and the service manager reiterated the same thing which is weird seeings how the trans has a filter. Any info would be appreciated.

    First off Brian, thank you for ALL the excellent vids, much appreciated... Just did the pan drop and filter change on my 2016 F150 5.0 with no issues. Im a little confused with the level check though. You explain to adjust the fluid level for the bottom of the hatch marks while trans is warm. My 2016 has two sets of marks A and B on the stick. Could you tell me which I should aim for... Bottom of A or B. The shop manual stipulates top of the B dotted marks (perhaps that is at op temp) but I would stick with your experience and knowledge. TIA

      My stick has A on bottom and B on top
      your bottom set of hashes is for cold fluid aim for the middle the top hashes are for when your fluid is hot again aim for the middle. These two sets of hashes are to help determine your fluid level whether the transmission is cold or hot.

      Transmission will hold back some fluid. You won't be able to completely empty it.

  • @pelle8632
    @pelle8632 6 років тому

    As you fill the transmission through the fill port, the fluid will flow out once it’s full. Does that get you to the correct level or do you have to go back and add more after running it. I have 14 Mustang v6. Is this same trans?

    • @chrisoffutt8968
      @chrisoffutt8968 4 роки тому

      When you drain the trans you'll have extra fluid in the pan since the vehicle isn't running and pushing fluid. Just like with an engine oil will seep back down into the pan without the engine running to pump the oil. Filling it to where it starts to overflow and shifting it through the gears pushes the fluid back into the trans and will show the actual fill level.
