The greatest thing was how he just stood by, serious, unapologetic. When people disrespect you, don't go as low as they, stand your ground, keep your posture. That's how you prove to the rest who is the better person.

@Ander P well seeing as racism exists, obama couldn’t be re-elected, hilary had her fair share of scandals, media covered trump 25/8 (ex. him being on SNL), and ironically trump was a huge figure in black culture because of his wealth- yea obviously he won.
Hasn't worked for over 20 years in US politics. Time to rethink things.
@Ander P nice. Somebody else connected the dots xD

Yes! He memorized it. You would think the school would know that a valedictorian, would memorize their speech.
I was thinking the same thing. I mean there's a reason why they become the valedictorian of the school. I bet that principal didn't even reach to accomplish and talk up stage during his high school graduation.
Haha touché!
Actually ahaha, it's not too common for valedictorians to memorize their speech. The convocation takes place at a busy time, so personally speaking, there's other things to tend to before the speech which comes last in your priorities. Most valedictorians simply don't care to memorize it, and they quickly throw together something to get through the ceremony. It was lucky that this valedictorian was devoted enough to his speech to memorize it in advance and take these precautions.
Lol
@@teagan8908 It's alright, kiddo. This is a safe space to rant. (I'm totally kidding, try journaling or yelling into a bottomless void) But either way.... I hope you have a nicer post-high school experience. It always kinda sucks and girls like that probably hate their own lives.

@Jared Wiens to be fair...just because this moron principal cut the mic and told the kid to read the "pre approved" message doesn't make him a homophobe. We can't imagine what educators have to deal with when finding the balance between each of the students' and their parents' wishes. I'm confident that even with all the applause there were many angry parents calling this man's phone.
Do not misunderstand me...I am not at all condoning the actions of this administrator or anyone like him. Not even close. But to call him a homophobe detracts from the other truths. It shuts down anyone you are attempting to convey your own truth and then we end up right where we currently are: both sides screaming accept me and I dont accept you.
Nobody wants to be labeled anything.

In a twist of irony, had the principal just let the speech go on, it would've probably gotten lost in a sea of content and never reached a wider audience beyond those at the graduation. But, because of this man's pettiness, this young graduate's message is amplified tenfold.

George R.R. Martin,
This is a beautiful quote .
I graduated from Eastern in 2015. Tull was a terrible person and that doesn't seem to have changed. He wants nothing to do with his students and keeps away from them until faking support for those students who do only what they are told; any stepping out of line was not tolerated. Tull made that highschool a place of oppression that reminded us all that we were seen as just academic cattle. A lot of us talked about it, but there was nothing even those on the councils could do to change anything with him as Principle. Eastern Regional Highschool was not a supportive environment for me or anyone I knew that went there and it is painful to see that that hasn't changed since. They had a couple of good school counselors, but a broken system and an incompetent Principle in Tull.
I hope you went to a place with a better environment after graduating from that school.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience at the school, with that principal.
Thankyou for sharing. If you're comfortable I'd recommend passing your experience on to Superintendent Robert Cloutie or a higher education authority to bring more evidence and pressure on removing him.
@@islandsunset Thank you, I'm doing well now. After years of struggling with depression and trauma (not from my highschool experience but it wasn't exactly helpful in that regard) I'm in my final year of college and am a straight A student with a dual major, currently setting up internship programs for improving Neurodiversity in social welfare organizations. My college experience was rough, though was definitely a better environment. My college is now trying to make itself a better place for Neurodiversity so I get to help others go through at least a better college experience, and the university is really trying.
Highschool failed me, I was a D- student then because of how dysfunctional my education was and now have plans for attending a dual-doc program at Columbia University next year. My growth was stunted and honestly, I do blame Tull and people like him, these could've been much better times where people could have flourished rather than trudging through 4 extremely important years of their lives and having to work things out as adults.
@@akondar That's a great idea. I'm currently making connections with NJ state-wide social welfare programs in establishing greater Neurodiversity and internship experience for psych & law students. Most of these organizations have interest in bettering our state's education system, so I could probably get some pressure on this from some significant organizations. Thanks for the push, I think I'll do that.

1).... Let someone speak without interruption and no further incident...
or...
2).... Attempt to Silence someone, then bring full focus and attention onto your self, have your name spoken out in public, have an investigation started against you, have high ranking officials standing up in support for the defendant, have world wide coverage of the incident......
The system: Follow the rules or else!
Valedictorian: or else what?
The system: we’ll cut you off
Valedictorian: again?
You would think that a middle aged black man would know more about, and be sympathetic to, an oppressed minority and the need to have a free voice on their plight!
This made me cry. I am so grateful for his message and for the beautiful light that he is. Well deserve standing ovation
the principal needs to be removed from this school. it is unhealthy for such person of power to do such thing.
Embarrassing, but the superintendent's response is promising. Let's hope that review (hopefully not run by friends of higher ups) actually takes place. It seems like can be easy for higher ups to respond with all sorts of pretty, reassuring rhetoric in the immediate aftermath of an incident like this, weather the PR storm until it subsides, and then go back to doing nothing. Things like that happen in my home city all the time. Seems like we really have to push appointed officials to get anything done locally, and then hope that those officials aren't just there because they were friends or family with a mayor or someone on the school board.
That is RUDE!! You NEVER should cut someone's speech!
Why can't you keep your personal beliefs or identity aside and just concentrate on talking about education that school provided you?
So you want him to say nothing?
@@Piffle-riffle He can go onto youtube or to his close friends/family and can say anything he want but he cannot force others to listen who has different thoughts and ideas about this sensitive stuff.
@@cryptocurrclub I meant that in a way that school doesn't really help to teach all that much, or at least in my case, which is why I said "so he should say nothing?". Either way though, he was definitely allowed to say what he said. Or at least that was what the superintendent in the video claimed.
I wanna remind you that the entire audience disagrees with you
You go dude, and you keeped speaking after your turned off and you memorized your script too that is so cool. I also love your graduation gown.
That graduation gown makes a mockery of the graduation ceremony.
If people can only get a few words out stating the subject of the speech before having their mic cut it's still a successful speech. It empowers others to do the same. Figuratively speaking, he's got more balls than the halfwits who are trying to silence him.👍
He memorized his speech but submitted another speech for approval. He should have just submitted his original speech. It sounds inspirational. People get nervous when you go rogue, off script.
