• _Undying_ was a great, very memorable game, one of my all-time favorites. I want to re-play it, but my OCD makes me do the shooting-range at the start, so I can't make any progress, so I keep putting it off for later. Regardless, it's still a great game, with great atmosphere, and felt very full and satisfying (not too long, not too short). _Jericho_ wasn't bad, it was just buried. • The spells remind me of the ter'angreal from _Wheel of Time_ (which was pretty good, but too long); also some of its maps. • 12:36 - This part reminds me of _American McGee's Alice_ . The cistern reminds me of _Tomb Raider_ , other parts remind me of some of the _Painkiller_ games, and some _Return to Castle Wolfenstein_ , and even _CoC: Dark Corners of the Earth_ . • 15:00 - This part reminds me of _Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem_ . • 18:47 - Would you still hit it? 🤔 • 20:37 - And some _Watchmaker_ and/or _Scratches_ . • 28:18 - And now _Barrow Hill_ . • 29:00 - Kraven. • 31:47 - Shame. :-\ _Undying_ is reminiscent of many games (some before it, some after), as well as some Lovecraft stuff, particularly _Dunwich Horror_ . Overall, it's extremely memorable and a fun play.
Thank you, Civie. Sincerely. This was one of my favorite games of all time. I had no idea that you were aware of it and wanted to suggest it for a while. But you really did it justice. Couple of pro tips: - you can dispell the killer plants - you can electrically charge the crossbow BTW, you didn't mention how bullets ricochet, which was quite awesome for the time. Now go play Jericho. It has some flaws, but it also has a lot of memorable moments / set pieces... I mean, it's Barker...
I haven't even watched the whole video yet, but mixing footage from one of my all-time favorite movies into a review of one of my all-time favorite games? Dude. You're so awesome. And so, so, so funny.
@@h4724-q6j I like the slow burn better. It gets under your skin. In this game things don't tend to jump you so much as you hear them, aren't sure where they are, and even when you see them you feel tension because they tend to be stronger than you are XD
"That scythe" is one of my favorites from any game, ever... XD You also neglected to mention the fact that it'll drink enemies' blood puddles if you get it close enough... like some sort of twisted drinking bird thing. ...and the lightning bolt spell works with the crossbow or whatever it was to make some sort of rocket launcher type thing that was supposed to be good for killing something or other.

There's something about these old games... the graphics look more crisp than today. They also tried a lot of different things back then, not worrying about what would stick and what wouldn't sell.
Civvie you actually made me cry with the EA assimilation skit when I saw Westwood studios. I didn't believe you could actually make me cry.Just imagining something similar happening to the Westwood studios made me scared and sad.
Damn civvie, you too have really dabbled in the good old 90s pc game era. This was my childhood and you pretty much covered all my favourite hidden gems. Jedi academy even being referenced. Why cant I hear these references in modern discussion.
It's probably not worth commenting on a 4 year old video but this is really impressive for UE 1 tech. The texturing on the low polygon count models is especially good. Really good work work within the limitations they were working with.
Doomguy is left-handed ;) Holds his pistol in his left hand and leads with his left when unarmed. He only holds the shotgun right-handed because many left-handed soldiers still train to use rifles and shotguns that way.
That's a cool detail, but it was clearly made for gameplay reasons: if your character can dual-wield, it's better to have the left mouse button fire the weapon in your left hand (those who have played The Darkness II know what I'm talking about), and since in Undying guns are treated as a primary fire and spells as an alternate option, it made sense to have the main character be left-handed.
@@mariuszj3826 I haven't played it in a while so my memory is a bit fuzzy. But, from what I could remember. The time limit wasn't too bad. I think all that really did was just affect the game's ending and made the game harder the longer you took. And even then, you'd have to spend a ridiculous amount of time in the same area for that to happen. On a side note, be wary playing this game at high volumes. The audio is a bit scratchy and low quality, so it might hurt your ears.

Postal 4 just released on Steam in early access, with Jon St. John... I'm sorry for 90% of your comment section being about that
I mean, I reminded him an hour ago but yeah.
@Stix N' Stones I have some problems too, but it's a first build alpha, gotta expect that to happen
Pro F.E.A.R. WHEN CIVVIE??!?!?!?
Pro FEAR3 too?
Nah, that one sucks...
@@Gruntvc O.G. FEAR and the 2 expansions...i dont want to talk about FEAR 3..
@@Gruntvc I actually kinda like that game. Sure, it completely loses any semblance of being spooky and god damnit that whole story campaign is a clusterfuck, but no other game lets me gib dudes in bullet time quite like F3AR. It's the simple things in life, man.
Embrace your inner boomer shooter, the early 10's were a dark times for shooters.

@Stix N' Stones New Doom though, so, eh.
@@Jebsucks meh at best. No proper level design or resource management.
@@aNemetZzZ I don't know, there seems to be plenty of ressource management and the levels are plenty open in doom 2016.

Good memories
Are we just not going to talk about Civvie's hand reveal
gnaw right? It just so lewd

Wait, what? I’ve seen this video a couple times, and I don’t know what you’re talking about. Do you have a time stamp for it?

@@papayer Yeah, never mentally occured to me that that's civvie's hand. thanks
• 20:37 - And some _Watchmaker_ and/or _Scratches_ .
• 28:18 - And now _Barrow Hill_ .
• 29:00 - Kraven.
• 31:47 - Shame. :-\
_Undying_ is reminiscent of many games (some before it, some after), as well as some Lovecraft stuff, particularly _Dunwich Horror_ . Overall, it's extremely memorable and a fun play.
Also remember dual wielding on bioshock 2, this seems like the progenitor to it
When you gotta squint to hear the Irish accent
It's like the VA kept forgetting what accent he was supposed to have so he had to keep correcting himself.
I'm Irish and he overshot it by a mile and went Scottish

Thank you, Civie. Sincerely. This was one of my favorite games of all time. I had no idea that you were aware of it and wanted to suggest it for a while. But you really did it justice.
Couple of pro tips:
- you can dispell the killer plants
- you can electrically charge the crossbow
BTW, you didn't mention how bullets ricochet, which was quite awesome for the time.

Patriks god damn smug face when he did that
I love this game! It's not so much 'scary' as it is atmospheric, and it actually kind of has that unsettling atmosphere thanks to the janky graphics
Honestly "scary" for games usually either means atmospheric or obnoxious jumpscares. I know which one I prefer.
@@h4724-q6j I like the slow burn better. It gets under your skin. In this game things don't tend to jump you so much as you hear them, aren't sure where they are, and even when you see them you feel tension because they tend to be stronger than you are XD
@@bloodrunsclear yeah I prefer that too.
Deserves a solid remaster by Nightdive Studios. This and Soldier of Fortune.
@@Gruntvc A remake would be interesting, looking a bit like Evil Within maybe?
"That scythe" is one of my favorites from any game, ever... XD You also neglected to mention the fact that it'll drink enemies' blood puddles if you get it close enough... like some sort of twisted drinking bird thing.
...and the lightning bolt spell works with the crossbow or whatever it was to make some sort of rocket launcher type thing that was supposed to be good for killing something or other.
The books of blood have some of the best shorts I've ever read.
I just read the midnight meat train to my wife about a month ago. Good stuff
omg that assimilation is so true :(
EA is the Thing confirmed.
EA is not The Thing. They are literally the Devil.
Though to be fair, Blizzard, Activision, WB Games, Ubisoft, etc are giving their best to be terrible too.
I thought EA fired their acquisitions after they were done with em.
🅱️estwood 😭
Legit one of my favorite games ever. Nice to see this old gem getting some love. Now how about a remaster and a sequel?
Remaster maybe; I think Unicronic Arts killed all hope of a sequel though.
Thank you so much for talking about this, it's a criminally underrated title that no one remembers. I have a lot of younger friends who didn't really get into the PC gaming scene until I met them in university and I keep telling them about how great this game was. Damn shame we're never getting a sequel.
I genuinely felt a twinge in my chest seeing all the logos. RIP games companies, gone but never forgotten.
Lizabeth is giving me some Mileena flashbacks that I don't mind a bit.
Okay, that The Thing clip needs its own video.

You sir are as of now my favorite youtuber, and not just for all of those brilliant pop-culture references.
Adding Westwood Studios and Pandemic was a nice touch to that burn scene. I miss them
An awesome game. When I was younger it literally scared the shit out of me, so that I finished it almost 15 years later after rediscovering it. a true classic in horror Gaming.
This is one of my favorite FPS games of all time. Everything was perfect in this.
The most underrated horror game ever released.
Pretty scared there when the necronomicon was tossed on camera, thought alternate universe Civvie might've summoned some weird apocalyptic creatures and doomed his world. Thank god that we got a Undying popsicle stick show instead.

This episode made me feel, and I quote:
"Holy crap, the intro is back."
I have, honestly, been afraid that this channel is going to end after reaching 100k subs and doing the DNF material.
Good to know Civvie isn't done with being the pinnacle of online entertainment.
They extended his sentence.
And unlike a certain other pinnacle, he’s earned that title.
I just love how in the Brutal Doom clip he's actually playing Trailblazer.
This is more Dark Humor than Horror, but not bad...
Lovecraft always improves somethin'
This deserves a Remake.
“Where will Jon St. John show up next?”
Postal 4 surprisingly.
When will this comment appear again?
FuNnY yOu ShOuLd SaY tHaT
CallOfCody lol yeah!
Once he gets into Jericho, it will be like DNF all over again.
Jericho was GOOD though. It's that stupid, shitty, cliffhanger ending that sucked.
(Remembers repeated bosses, enemy swarms, dull visuals in most levels)
Oh no wait, Jericho sucked. The only good thing about it was GUIIIIIIDED PSYCHIC SNIIIIPER BUUUUULEEETS!
Jericho at 200k subscribers then?
@pkleaf, Both Singularity and Bulletstorm did guided bullets too. And both were a lot better than Jericho.
That teammate AI...
@@Gruntvc I know they did, but Jericho was the first game I played that had them. And yeah, the AI was so trash it was obvious they wanted co op multiplayer but scrapped the idea for some odd reason.

Just want to say, I stopped watching halfway through the review so I can play this game without spoilers. Civvy11, you are amazing keep up the awesome reviews.
There's something about these old games... the graphics look more crisp than today. They also tried a lot of different things back then, not worrying about what would stick and what wouldn't sell.
Just watched Grim Beard's review of this game from three years ago and now you cover Undying too. What a great time to be alive
This and _Eternal Darkness_ are the big Cthulhu-but-not-Cthulhu games of this era. Plus the actually-Cthulhu classic _Dark Corners of the Earth_
loved this game, so atmospheric- especially 20 years ago. I like how the skull storm fully charged sounds like Beavis on a sugar high
It's probably not worth commenting on a 4 year old video but this is really impressive for UE 1 tech. The texturing on the low polygon count models is especially good. Really good work work within the limitations they were working with.
8:30 I just realized; Patrick is LEFT HANDED! That's gotta be a first in FPS history!
Maybe, but I remember that the terrorists in counter strike are left handed.
Doomguy is left-handed ;) Holds his pistol in his left hand and leads with his left when unarmed.
He only holds the shotgun right-handed because many left-handed soldiers still train to use rifles and shotguns that way.
Is he? Or does magic require more dexterity, which is why he uses his right hand?
I thought, "Samus Aran," but that was obviously after this. Just figured I'd mention her.
This game reminded me about Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi, I could hear a thing or two about it from You
That reminds me. I have it on steam never started. I need to very soon.
@@mariuszj3826 Recommend it. A bit clunky but good. It's a nice love letter to the Dracula films in my opinion.
@@frug5629The global time limit to finish the game sort of turns me off. Is there enough time to take it easy?
@@mariuszj3826 I haven't played it in a while so my memory is a bit fuzzy. But, from what I could remember. The time limit wasn't too bad. I think all that really did was just affect the game's ending and made the game harder the longer you took.
And even then, you'd have to spend a ridiculous amount of time in the same area for that to happen.
On a side note, be wary playing this game at high volumes. The audio is a bit scratchy and low quality, so it might hurt your ears.
That one's been sitting on my GOG wishlist for a while. I need to get around to it.
Don't know why, but it just pleases me to no end that he's a leftie with a left handed revolver.
Love this game.. despite its age it still plays pretty well - and the atmosphere in some places is VERY effective. Certain parts gives me goosebumps every time. Great video...
