Cold snap deserves S tier (or at least A) for being *absurd* with abjuration wizards. If they hit you, they die to AoA, if they miss, they die to being frozen and stunned. If They miss and than hit, they take even more AoA damage because they're chilled. It also just gives a relevant bonus action to a character that might not otherwise have anything to do with it. I think you underrated it because you were afraid of your bias, but your bias is correct that this weapon is awesome.
Especially since it doesn't actually have a spell DC (Despite what it says) So 10 Abjuration Wizard, 2 Sorcerer (1 for Armor of Agathys and 2 for meta magic bonuses) like get Careful Spell & Distant spell, or Twin spell for 5th lvl spells CC at 2 targets without using a 6th lvl spell slot.
@TheRedAzuki I typically prefer 11/1 so you can use arcane recovery on a 6th level spell slot, but 10/2 seems pretty good as well. 10/1/1 with a level of tempest cleric for more retaliation damage is also an option
I'm trying an Armor of Agathys multiclass with spore druid since the symbiotic entity temporary hp retains the Armor's retribution damage. Not at act 3 yet but performing well through honor mode so far. The cold staff from the underdark is clutch.
@@Mhill08 Do you use the temp HP boots and the melee temp HP spell cloak? They give temp HP back on symbiotic entity, which in turn feeds the HP on Armor of Agathys. Druid 10, Sorc 1, Cleric 1 (For Heavy Armor so you can use armor of persistence & Command spell on Wis Save) gives you an immortal tank that slaps back by just being attacked. :D
I think Belm got underrated here tbh. When used in the off-hand, its damage is necessarily as good as the best possible main hand damage you pair it with. With Dual Wielder it lets you make resource-free bonus action attacks with any of the best one-handed weapons in the game, and either way gets additional value out of anything you stack onto the main-hand weapon like Magic Weapon and either of the two Elemental Magic Weapon variants from Drakethroat/Flail of the Ages. It also lets you forego the Two-Weapon Fighting fighting style as now your bonus action attack gets your stat Modifier to damage anyway, which also combos extra well with Blade Pact Warlocks. That was a lot of words, I know, but all to say that both in theory and in practise I've found Belm to be an incredible weapon with a wide scope of two-weapon builds. I'd vote for A tier for Belm. Thanks for listening to my TedTalk.
It honestly makes a good option for a dual wielding Spore Druid. Bonus action melee attack, is pretty decent for using your melee more necrotic bonus more. And if you're using the Armor of Agathy + SporeDruid Temp health with Concentration = +8 temp HP and melee range spell cloak = +7 temp HP. You can recover all your temp HP and basically be a tank with decent melee capabilities. Edit: Elf & Drow gets proficiency in shortswords, so you can use stuff like Crimson Mischief + Belmt on your druid while your rogue uses undermountain king and bloodthrist. Since Crimson Mischief is a thing you wanna attack multiple times with. You could also get 1 lvl in Cleric (light cleric) instead of Sorcerer, to get access to command scaling with wisdom. Which you can have pretty decent level with.
It's also worth noting that Dolor Amarus stacks with other items with the same effect. You can equip up to 3 items with this passive (2 Dolor Amarus and 1 Vicious Shortbow) for a total of 21 bonus damage for critical hits. Combined with Bhaalist Armor this increases to 42 damage.
Also the drs add the dmg each time, and theres also the craterflesh gloves and Crimson Mischief which is a higher dmg dice and does 7 dmg on just having advantage which is technically better. When you have a source of hold or auto crit like assassin, this gets ridiculous.
I know that initiative is king in BG3, but I believe the weapon slot is way too valuable for any character to wield a short sword that gives +1 to initiative to put it in S tier.

I assume you are going to make tier lists for all the weapon types. After you are done with those, may I suggest comparing all the items in S (and maybe A tiers) among all the weapon types? Bloodthirst dagger vs. Deva's mace style.
I also value Cold Snap very highly, mainly for my super high AC dual wielding build. 20 DEX + Armor of Agility = 5 + 17 = 22 base Cold Snap + (Gleamdance or Bloodthirst) + Dual Wielder Feat = +3 Cloak of Protection + Wondrous Gloves + (Evasive Shoes or Bonespike Boots) + Ring of Protection + (Ring of Twilight or Bracing Band) + Helm of Balduran = +6 Bard + Defensive Flourish = +4 Harper Amulet and/or Shield spell = +5 ==== AC 40.. a little overkill.. but then some slots can be swapped out for damage on your build. I usually combine with Water Elemental to Freeze anyone who missed you, then Shatter or Eldritch Blast/bombs.. to exploit Freeze's vulnerabilities. Very fun high damage combo.
Just a note, Bone Chill always prevents the target from healing, not just if they are undead. Undead just get disadvantage on their next attack. This means the fleshrender has even fewer uses than covered in this video.
I really like using Cold Snap as an offhand weapon on Gale, while he's carrying Mourning Frost in his main hand... Add in all the other cold-based items, and the combination is pretty nice.
I think Murderous Cut deserves C-tier for the simple fact that you find like over a dozen of them, and they make perfect throwing knives. I would need to test if the magic effect works when they're thrown, but it's still a +1 dagger I can give to a fighter to throw when they can't quite make it into melee range.
Hey brother, I love these videos. Is there anyway you could overlay the description card while you’re talking about each item? Really just a screen shot from the wiki is enough. It would be nice to see the object you’re describing while being able to look at the stats and the in game description.
Not that it makes a difference really, but I'd also want to point out that the justicar's scimitar doesnt require proficiency so I believe all weapon actions are available to all characters
Ahh The Sword of Life Stealing. One of my most powerful builds was turning Shadowheart into a Dex-based Oath of Vengeance Paladin. Critting a Smite with this weapon is one of the most satisfying things ever.
I know rapiers aren’t included for whatever reason but Duelist Prerogative is easily the best crit fishing Rogue weapon in the game. There’s simply no need for a dual-wield with this weapon available. When combined with Bhaalist armor, Bonespike gloves (bypass piercing resistance/immunity), other crit lowering gear, and the Risky Ring, you are hitting crits about ~50% of the time while dealing 150-175 damage per sneak attack. Probably more when fully optimized. And that’s not counting the bonus attack the weapon gives you (extremely useful for rogues). All in all, it’s about 200 damage per turn. There are alternatives which offer higher crit chance but it comes at the cost of damage. I’ve tried just about everything and nothing beats it. Even better when you’re multi-classing with fighter.
The murderous cut should be bumped up to in line with the non magical dagger because it is in fairly plentiful supply as a thrown weapon and is a strict upgrade to it
Are scimitars really rogue weapons? They aren't proficient with them, and as far as I know you can't get proficiency for scimitars besides spending a feat or multiclassing. Not saying that can't be effective, just unintuitive imo. Love the videoes though
definitely a niche use case but I really enjoy carrying around like 20 murderous cuts on my berserker throw barb. that way I can do GWM for my melee attacks and still do tavern brawler for powerful ranged attacks and be deadly at any range. better than using a bow with the weaker dexterity stat.
I Must add to dolor amarus that if you wear the 1-6d force dmg gloves, it gets +7 force dmg from dolor amarus aswell, So if u have 2 dagger and the vicious bow equipped, a and u are a half orc, u can get 40+ force dmg on crits on the top of the 120-140 piercing dmg
Frankly, The Baneful deserves to be S tier. It makes Eldritch Knight a better class, and gives Warlock and EK Fighter a super good early +2 weapon that holds up even in ACT 3. Its effect is useful in Honor Mode if you want to do every combat encounter and synergises well with Daredevil Gloves for that point blank Eldritch Blast, especially if you have 2 levels in Fighter for that sweet sweet Action Surge. If you go 3 in Fighter for EK you can go with Pact of the Tome for extra cantrips and basically have more cantrips than spells which are always nice for Eldritch Incantation substitutes. The Baneful is an amazing and GORGEOUS weapon.
Awesome tier list. I'm ashamed that I didn't realize the Poo-Scraper was missing, though it is good you realized it, however I disagree with the rating. It's S tier for its poo scraping capabilities and belongs to Shovel, one of the most important characters in BG3.
For Belm, you say other one hands weapons are better for Sword & Board but i dont know, enabling a whole 3rd attack feels like it would be better than 2 slightly stronger attacks. It felt best in slot with my S&B Paladin to me, shrugs.
Can you really call the Cold Snap's effect a stun, when it has a 1 turn duration that wears off immediately when the enemy gets their turn? I had a build like this, but the real synergy ended up being the Force vulnerability for my Monk's Resonating Blasts
“Without a shield, high armour class is harder to get” this is true, but remember Cold Snap also gives +1 AC, and for a wizard etc who wants one of the powerful staff items in their main hand, Dual Wielder feat gives an additional +1 (so you basically end up with a shield equivalent)
In addition to getting the total of +2 to AC, the Chilled condition makes the affected entity Vulnerable to Cold damage, so use the Drakethroat Glaive to give your main weapon Cold damage, then both your weapons do double damage (Cold Snap already does Cold damage). If a Chilled entity gets the Wet condition, it becomes Frozen which means that it has Vulnerability to Bludgeoning, Thunder and Force damage. If the wielder's main hand weapon with any of these damage types, then more doubled damage is gained.
Seeing my fav dolor not S is quite sad 😢. Its true that it is not universal like undermountain king or bloodthirst, but with minimal set up, you can see big sastify number on combat log.
is there a reason why the assassins shortsword is not in the list. I mean it's not an important sword in the game, as it only gives advantage on stealth checks, but I was wondering why it's not mentioned at all.
@@xenomorphgirI You right, I had to look that up, I've never noticed it in my playthroughs. I still think there's not enough. Lol. No firetooth or shortbow of gessen.
Bhaalist armor wont work if enemy has resistance or immunity to pierce. The bloodthirst will let you remove the resist/imm from the enemy. Very useful as mainhand all the time.
This is all well and good, but cold snap is clearly the best item on this list. But seriously, most fun I’ve had in honor mode is with a duo melee assassin/gloomstalker and a second character to take maximum advantage of the effect, who I switched around a few times
I keep wanting to make a poison based build with the poisoners ring and dual thorn blades, but I don’t really think there’s quite enough gear to support it and make it viable
i understand why you wouldn't include shadow blade seeing as how it's technically a summoned weapon, but due to the fact that you *can* make multiple shadow blades with the hireling exploit, i would put in in S tier for damage output alone when paired with the resonance stone
The Justiciar Scimitar blind effect does not seem to work. I've never seen it proc a single time when attacking with advantage. The Thorn Blade also does not seem to behave the way that it's suggested here. It only applies the 1d4 damage to itself, so you can't offhand it and get 1d4 on your main weapon. Additionally, when wielding two, they only get 1d4 on themselves. It doesn't stack. I'm not sure if Honor Mode changed the rules on these, but that's how they're behaving for me on my current playthrough.
Huh, the Sword of Life Stealing would almost seem to completely invalidate the Dolor Amarus, were it not for the fact the Sword's effect only applies on crits with that particular weapon, but Dolor's applies to all crits...
Not including the Shadow Blade (which can be exploited into just a regular weapon)? 4d8 psychic damage when paired with the Resonance Stone is S-tier (especially on an Assassin). Edit: There's also no Flame Blade! Base 5d6 Fire damage at lvl 11!
I know I can test this so easily but I'll help your algorithm with a completely unrelated question. Can you twin cast your bonus action spell with band of the mystic scoundrel? Trying to decide if I should go Swords 6, sorc 4 pal 2 or just swords/pal.
I'd really appreciate assistance on how to optimally use Rhapsody. On my rogue/ranger archer, I preferred bloodthirst/knife of the undermountain king; for my sorceror, markoheshkir; for my cleric, the blood of lathander, to best proc radiating orb/reverb. I suppose the last of these is easiest to replace - the cleric could trade illumination/blindness for +3 to save DC, which is decent. But I'm struggling to see how to use it on anyone else.
Maybe the list would have been too long, but I feel like maybe every finese melee weapon should have been here, like I imagine that the phalar alluve would be used by the same kind of character as these other weapons
This helped a lot but the whole category is still confusing to me. I am thinking about making some kind of paladin + something multiclass build who uses a shortsword or dagger for their smites (mostly for style). Which of these weapons would get the most mileage as a single weapon in the hands of a paladin?
What's your opinion on 2x dolor with craterous flesh gloves? That 'feels' stronger than the legendary dagger pairing as the craterous proc also activates dolor even in honour mode.
I'm in the middle of my honor run right now and got two Thorn blades and it didn't work. Also, I couldn't get the thorn blade effect to work on another weapon either. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if honor mode just doesn't let it happen.
Agreed. I remember kicking myself on my first playthrough for missing it, but Stealth Archer builds can just scoop the Resonating Stone anyway, so what's the point
Woops, you're right! Truly the stealthiest shortsword. D is probably right, you could maybe use it on a stealth archer but there's just better ways to get advantage on stealth
I'm always confused by how much gold you seem to have in all these guides. "vendors will sell these items". I pick up almost everything and sell it, but I usually have just enough gold for a few non-core items and definitely not enough to buy random +1/+2 weapons or armors. Do you get gold by stealing and pickpocketing or something like that? Because I usually don't do that stuff.
I disagree about moving the steelforged sword that high up. Anyone with access to it already has access to Dammon, and he gives unlimited access to +1 short swords. It's just significantly less valuable at that point.
@@Cephalopocalypse Oh man, I didn''t realize that rapiers aren't light! I must admit, that the DnD weapons categoryies are always confusing me. I thought every finesse weapon is also light! It's also counter intuitive because a rapier seems so much thinner / lighter than a scimitar / short sword - at least for me. So thanks for all your videos, it really helps me to have some orientation in this item jungle.
@Cephalopocalypse just realized that there were in fact no rapiers. I just immediately heard scimitars and daggers and I assumed it was just all light weapons
Personally I don't really like how you rank items that are good but outclassed. I see why you do it and I'm not going to argue that it's objectively wrong, but to me that's unhelpful for seeing the value of the item itself. Sometimes you're going to make the choice of not using the strictly-slightly-better, because you find it annoying, unbalanced, you've used it too much already, you've missed it or for purely roleplaying reasons, and in that cases you'd like to know which other weapons are reasonable replacements. I know that this guide is meant for honor mode, but not everyone listening will be playing honor mode, and even for it, I think that for example putting shortswords in A but almost identical scimitars in D is unhelpful. It's not a big issue, I just find it slightly annoying

Glad you added the poo-scraper lol
Shadowblade?
The Poo Scraper is supposed to go in P-tier. (The P stands for Poo)
What's your opinion on 2x dolor with craterous flesh gloves? That 'feels' stronger than the legendary dagger pairing as the craterous proc also activates dolor even in honour mode.
No one ever even lists shadow blade on their tier list and with the psychic vulnerability its 4d8 + modifier before crits.
I'm in the middle of my honor run right now and got two Thorn blades and it didn't work. Also, I couldn't get the thorn blade effect to work on another weapon either. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if honor mode just doesn't let it happen.
What about "Cold Snap"?
I knew I should have weighed in on poo gate
I simply cannot believe you didn't put poo scraper in it's own special S+ tier I am so angry grrr
Forgot the assassin’s short sword.
Assassin's Shortsword was not listed, probably a D tier anyway. thanks
Agreed. I remember kicking myself on my first playthrough for missing it, but Stealth Archer builds can just scoop the Resonating Stone anyway, so what's the point
@@northofself I missed it on several playthroughs because I had ignored skeletons, lol.
Woops, you're right! Truly the stealthiest shortsword. D is probably right, you could maybe use it on a stealth archer but there's just better ways to get advantage on stealth
Infernal Rapier, S tier
Is the practice sword not a short sword?
I’m so mad about poo scraper. Ahhhhhh (am I generating engagement?)
But the Steelforged Sword is free.
@@chuckchan4127 when has money ever been a bottleneck in BG3?
@Mebsuta When I wanna hoard Strength Exilirs for my Monks addiction
put some respect on poo scraper!! that should be in S++
Poo Scraper should be P tier for poo and pee jokes
Perhaps a P tier for the poo scraper
Mind and Body, not Body and Mind on icon fwiw
Why are all rapiers missing? Anybody a clue?
This list covers light, finesse weapons - rapiers aren't light!
I was about to unsubscribe for not adding poo scraper, so I guess I'll stick around
No. Duelist prerogative?
That will be in the rapiers tier list!
@Cephalopocalypse just realized that there were in fact no rapiers. I just immediately heard scimitars and daggers and I assumed it was just all light weapons
Algyyyy
Hehe B for Belm
Woah no views.
The way you repeatedly say "Knife of the Undermountain King" makes it sound like you can get one for every character in your party.
For alg
Poo scraper not S-tier invalidates this list smh
💩POO SCRAPER SUPREMACY💩
How dare you not putting th Pooscraper into the PS-Tier?
Poop knife S+++ tier >:(
poo-scraper!!!
Best rogue weapon ? Ranged weapons 😂
Try the bows tier list!
Clocking in for my “poo-scraper belongs in S+ tier” engagement 🫡
