Longtime silent fan here who relates deeply to everything you said (in this and in countless other videos). I’m teaching at Columbia right now and often watch you & Claire before class just to get the rhythm of an intelligent and engaging voice in my head before going to the podium. Your audience’s enthusiasm is definitely alive and well!

Hello, a message from a fairly recent fan that doesn't comment, and you might not have considered part of your 'core audience'. I can't overstate how much I enjoy your videos and thoughtful comments/reviews/general remarks! The precision with which you tease apart what a book achieves was truly revelatory. It has multiplied the various avenues of curiosity I approach books with, and therefore deepened my reading enormously. So, yes, I am extremely enthusiastic !! and very happy your life has taken a turn that makes you excited for it again :)

Yet another longtime fan here who has come to your channel for your choice of books and the outstanding reviews - you manage to combine depth, detail, understanding and literary knowledge with such clear expression and lightness of touch that they have always been my favourite reviews and they have helped me learn how to read. Your review skills should equip you perfectly for a masters (I used to teach on one).
When you grow to love a different part of the world it can become an overwhelming passion - I was like that with South America but interestingly my wife followed a similar line to you. She began in English teaching in Eastern Europe, did a masters in Slavonic and East European studies here in the UK, then worked for Amnesty, then for the OSCE. Then she went elsewhere in human rights work. So there’s a lot of things you could do with your life after.
I have always advised my students to follow their passion so this is a fantastic move for you and I wish you every success with it.

Thank you for sharing. I can really relate to having depression and when you said its easy for a negative thought to become so big & feel so true - those pervasive lies can really rip us down. There's nothing better than breaking out & starting something new that excites you! Just remember, your value is immense! (yes because Hope said so loI) love your channel, hearing your intelligent discussions on what you're reading. Best to you in your studies. Hug & please keep posting!

Had a breakdown, went to grad school. That seems to be a pretty common trajectory for people who take on higher ed. That certainly was what I did! But in all seriousness, congratulations! You deserve to be doing something fulfilling and that makes you happy :]
I am so glad you are doing better and working on something you're excited about. That's how I feel too, coming out of a pretty dark place mentally and finally feeling like I'm working toward something good.
We should definitely meet up sometime soon 💛

I resonated so much with what you are going through. I graduated in May 2020 and absolutely spun out not finding a job and trying every single thing I could think of to be able to move out of my parents house and none of them worked. I'm now about to move across the country with a job that isn't in my career field but will sustain me while I can figure out what's supposed to come next. The bravery of planning again is so difficult and imagining the future is brave in a way we don't talk about enough. Thank you for sharing and no matter what anyone else went through what you did was very difficult and brave on its own terms.

Not much to say that others haven’t already said and I have also been unsure how to word it but as someone who has had severe depression and anxiety since 2019, there has been such a comfort in watching your videos during these three years.
15-20 minutes where I know I’m going to listen to a passionate, articulate, and thoughtful discussion on books which, when you’re struggling to care about most things, is so important to find things that spark an interest, spark a movement, spark part of who you used to be, and I’m so grateful for your content.
To know that you also were struggling but still managed to give so much means more than I can say.
But also I just have to say thank you for all the book recommendations :) My bookshelves are straining but I like to think they enjoy the extra weight.

Beast, you are a beast. You sing, you review books in front of a sizable audience, you are a freelancer, you are *getting your master's degree at Columbia!* (With a focus on Central and Eastern Europe. "That's a surprise, I think I'm gonna have a heart attack from not surprise" ~Iago the parrot.) Obviously, it's sad you've been dealing with depression, and it's true there's a lot of reasons to despair, but I brightened visibly when you announced, "I feel great." I am in a similar position, I had some rockiness a while back but now I'm doing fine. I do still hope you join Patreon someday if time ever allows. However, I'm delighted that you've joined ko-fi, thanks so much for providing a way for us to support you. ^-^ I also appreciate you continuing to support Ukraine. I can't begin to express how much I related to your story. A few years ago, I felt like there was no future for me, and I didn't feel like I was living life, I just felt like I was simply existing. I went back for my second bachelors degree; this time in English. It was a great decision to make, because I have more life experiences under by belt, and to discuss and analyze works with other people in a classroom is amazing. I graduate this June and I'm hoping to attend the masters program in the fall. It takes a lot for person to rebuild again, and you should be really proud of yourself, Jen! Here's to the next step!

Magnifique 🤩 amazing news ! You are so lucky and you were definitely right to listen to your inner voice. It’s going to be amazing and life changing. So proud of you ! As someone else mentioned I would love to know more about the cursus and the books you will be reading or studying ? Because as you know I am also very much into Eastern and Central Europe. So yes please keep us posted ! I am also glad you’re doing better. I can’t believe you felt worthless. Our brain can really mess us up. We watch you because we like your reviews and input and your personality. I remember your first videos in Russia !
As for the war in Ukraine, we feel so terrible. Except for the Presidential elections coming up, it’s the number one subject. And at work people, even today, celebrate Easter and spring but always end up saying “but not far away people are dying” As a European it has definitely changed our lives and Ukrainians are fighting so hard. As a longtime student of Russian language and history, I have had some qualms about reading Russian authors. Would love to have your input on this. Your cats are so cute. And finally I told my friend last Tuesday I wanted to go back to studying and was looking for a subject and how could I have missed it ! thanks ☺️

It's been a rough few years for everyone. I think we often don't see how affected other people are. Life has it's ups and downs and often those ups and downs even out to a fairly straight path, but I feel like there have been less ups during covid and the net affect has been feeling more down. It's not that there's more downs, just less ups to cancel them out.

Echo what others have said, I am happy to see that you are doing well. I stumbled across your channel a few years ago because I love hearing about people's experiences reading books. I have no connection with you and I'm from the UK so I don't know if I qualify for the 'ride-or-die' crowd but I've been watching your videos for a number of years now.
What's kept me around is your style of discussion. You're very clinical and precise in the way that you dismantle and interrogate the themes and passages of books. I can't remember which specific video it was but there was one in particular that I remember watching where you had prepared passages that you wanted to read with little sticky notes. I think it might have been your Elinor Oliphant review? I'm not sure. I thought that it was really cool, especially when a lot of people in my real life talk about books but never remember or reference specific passages. Your reminder that the content of the literature is just as important as its broader themes was a learning moment for me. I think a lot of people think that in order to sound smart about a book, you have to talk in grandiose terms, which I now see isn't always very useful.
Anyway, I just thought that if I kept watching then maybe I could learn from you, because I admire the clarity of thought that you have when talking about the things you care about. If this is any insight into the confusion you have at those that want to stick around then I hope I have helped!
