Re: insomnia, a friend of mine told me she spent years trying to improve her sleep, practice sleep hygiene etc and now her philosophy is that it’s up to the gods and you get the sleep you get and do what you can with the energy you have the next day. I hope you do find something that helps you.
I remember watching Closely Watched Trains for my film degree, I wish I’d been diligent enough to check which films we watched had literary counterparts at the time!
Honestly your friend is a mood. Most days I go through the motions of"correct" sleep hygiene and do everything the way I'm advised, but some days I'm like, whatever! I'm going to have this latte after 4PM and read manga online in bed because it makes no goddamn difference either way!

Loved seeing a slice of your week. My mom’s also had insomnia for years and it’s really nothing like just missing a night of sleep. Most doctors just chalk it up to menopause and leave it be. So frustrating
"It's really nothing like just missing a night of sleep" - this exactly! And the menopause part of the conversation is increeedibly frustrating. My mom slept like the dead before menopause but has had serious sleep problems ever since, and no one has treated it like it's a significant health issue, which kind of boggles my mind

I enjoyed how, as you say, mundane this is. It was peaceful. It charmed and amused me that you think Matthew is a more prolific reader than you, (and of course he is prolific) when you are such a dedicated reader yourself. I'm sorry about the insomnia, what a truly unfortunate thing. Speaking of Szabo, The Door is excellent. When Emergence said, "a dead person is a zero" it was like a thunderclap. Of course she's right and that's both unsettling and liberating. One needn't be afraid of a zero. The dialogue in that book! Till next time, all my fondness and admiration.

I have coeliac disease as well and I understand soooo much when you speak about being tired... I was diagnosed when I turned 30 but I believe I always had it, because I had symptoms even when I was small.
Liz, you're like a celiac sibling! I think I've had it since my late teens, and was only diagnosed at 29. Your experience sounds even wilder given you had childhood symptoms
Hello. I found your channel thru Matthew. The Eastern European Lit thumbnail grabbed my attention as it's my favourite, that and Middle Eastern/Arab. (I've more or less lost my interest in mainstream contemporary North American and British literature these days.) Anyhow, thanks to your great footage of the new stock at McNallys where I got a peek at a couple of unknown to me translated writers that I'll now check out here in the UK. Can I ask is it just a mere coincidence that both you and Matthew show viewers personal care practice (face washing) in your Vlogs? Interesting, not seen anyone else do this whilst talking about books. Anyway, gonna now keep an eye out on what new translated books you're reading as our tastes might overlap. Cheers.

Stanisław Barańczak is an excellent translator (if not THE greatest in the history of Pol-Eng translation), his Szymborska is almost as good as the original. Drive Your Plow is honestly the best place to start with Tokarczuk, I'm glad you have that to look forward to :)

If you're on the fence about where to go next with Alexievich, I'd recommend Zinky Boys!
What a wonderful bookstore! I also read Iza's Ballad which was such a sad book. Also am sad that this is my last Magda Szabo book in English. For WIT also read Memoirs of a Polar Bear by Yoko Tawada which I enjoyed, and Lucky Breaks by Yevgenia Belorusets. Trieste takes a while to really get into, but worth it when you get in the flow.
GREAT news: NYRB is publishing another Magda Szabó title in English next April (her second novel, The Fawn) :)

Which Magda Szabó do you recommend starting with out of what you've read so far?
It's a tricky question because all of them are so different in tone and execution. I think The Door is probably the place I'd recommend most people start, with the understanding that if you don't love it, that doesn't necessarily mean you won't love her others. My order was The Door (most sophisticated, from later in her career), Abigail (bridges adult and YA), Katalin Street (multiple perspectives used in an interesting way), and then Iza's Ballad (most similar to Katalin Street but even more melancholy). That order really worked for me personally
I read and loved The Door. Strangely I didn't appreciate Katalin St at all, in fact I gave up on it which is a pity.
