I’m mid-life and just started an undergraduate degree, so when you talked about being around a bunch of bright young things who are much more accomplished: oh yeah, I feel you. The 17 and 18 year olds in my classes are so smart and full of energy, and some of them have done so much already. I feel privileged to learn from them - but also very old, lol!
I’d love to hear anything you’d like to share about the reading you’re doing for your MA classes, it all sounds incredibly fascinating. And thanks for the Gospodinov recommendation too, his latest novel sounds right up my alley.

Hi, Jennifer! As an Ukrainian, I'm so glad to came across a foreigner on UA-cam who really cares about Eastern Europe and my country in particular. And I'm really interested in your school-related content and especially the way in which universities in the US are trying to deal with the war in Ukraine and dictatorships in Russia and Belarus.
As for the Polish language, the pronunciation is really hard to master, I struggle with that too.
Also thanks for normalizing not reading because of heavy workload.
I wish more booktubers raised this topic.
P.s. The mercats (it is even a word?) on your shirt are just precious💕

I’m so happy to live vicariously through you re. this academic program. Polish language and literature is a lifelong passion for me so please talk more about learning Polish. I also studied some Czech but came at it after Polish, and tbh I think I could have saved myself a lot of pain by staying there! 😂 so I’m fascinated to know how you continue to find it. Thank you thank you thank you!

They're VERY expensive sets so I basically get one every year and a half ;) They bring in new prints and colors all the time so I don't know if they have the mercats at the moment, but they may bring them back next year

OMG so cool you're learning Polish. Powodzenia ;) I've read two of Gospodinov's novels, Physics of Sorrow and Time Shelter. He's quite known here in Poland, blurbed by Tokarczuk and published by the same publisher here. I really like his writing although it's fragmentary and some stuff I just loooved and the other parts not so much. Definitely an interesting writer.

A previous career of mine originated with cold war era science education funding. Unpacking how gov't policy objectives have shaped education post-ww2 has to be a whole field of study in itself. Enjoyed the video and am definitely here for school or books or schoolbooks, which seems a likely possibility. 😄

Your classes sound so intense and fascinating. You're really in the perfect program for you. Recently I discovered a publisher in Brooklyn, Akashic Books, that has a collection of global noir. They are short story collections. I read Zagreb Noir--dark and twisty stories. There are ones on Moscow, Prague, Belgrad, Berlin. These might be good for you as a break from scholarly reading.

I haven't made it back to Manhattan since our last missed friend date (mostly because it's been so hot and I haven't really been going outside) but maybe when the weather starts to get cool now we can get that coffee!! :) If you're not too busy with school of course.

I hope your new courses will continue to be interesting for you and the workload will not take away the desire and joy of learning new things ^^
Your classes sound super interesting like a literary-political-language mash-up. People like you (I also have a work friend who recently finished a passion-lead Masters Degree) make me wish to go back to school myself but then I remember that I don't really want to go back to school xD
Funny to hear you describing Polish as sibilant - a lot of people have it grouped with Russian which to me is much more melodic and different sounding than Polish. I myself usually go with describing Polish as rustling and the fact that rustling in Polish is "szeleszczący" only further proves my point xD
I love seeing that you're doing well and I hope your face will greet us here from time to time

Good morning Jennifer, always a pleasure. I am in my pajamas and need to get ready for school myself, ha ha. So I won't be making a thoughtful comment on your classes just now. I will just say I always enjoy hearing you talk. Because of the hours I've spent bonding with you over hearing you talk books, it's just pleasant. Also, you are a beast, taking five and a half classes your first semester. All the best.

When you were talking about the history of regional studies programs being intertwined with government interests, I couldn't help but think about BABEL by R.F. Kuang! It's a historical fantasy that is all about the way academic institutions like Oxford were complicit in British colonialism - I think you would really enjoy it! Of course, you probably don't have time to read a 500+ page tome while in school, but just something stow away for the future! :) re: the channel, I personally love hearing about people's master's programs, what the cohort is like, and reading lists!! A lot of students assume other people don't want to hear about what they're reading for school, but I've discovered so many fascinating books I wouldn't have even heard about otherwise! So please talk about what you're reading for school! Thanks for another lovely video!

I was in a road trip with my sister in Oregon and Nevada (and a bit of California) for three weeks. Back in France. Twice a month sounds perfect ! Even if one video isn’t scripted, just a chat about the classes what you’re learning and reading, the other books or events, documentaries, etc.
I’ve come upon old textbooks and printed e-mails I wrote in Bosnian/Croatian back in the old days. I have decided to study it again. I can still read Russian and would love to study Ukrainian 😊 As for Polish, congratulations because it’s tough ! I can recognize it easily because it sounds different. Câlins to your kitties ! And please let us know next time how the conference go ! Belarus 🇧🇾 is forgotten. Slava Ukraini

Can you do a vid on the difference's in the book awards. I've always loved the Pulitzer winners but can't find any other sure bets. The Bookers all seem strange, the Women's Prize winners are hit and miss (for me). What are they all looking for that the winners would vary so wildly?
