    Good for you! This was a fun video. I know what you mean, it’s such a weird and difficult task getting rid of books - I just remind myself that if I really want to read it later, I can always use the library - or - just buy it again!

    I relate to this struggle. So many of my books, realistically, have sat I unread on my shelf for years. But I still feel like I fully intend to read them, so just calling it like it is and getting rid of them is tough.

    Always good to see you, including when it's to see you *not* read books. Idk why book unhauls are so entertaining, but it's just fun seeing what doesn't make the cut and why.

    I bought a Kindle back in 2008 and have not looked back. When I moved recently, I had to get rid of 75% of my physical books, I think I had about 3,000. Because I was able to replace those books that I had to "keep" with digital copies, I found that it wasn't too hard. I have kept my most prized books, like the Riverside Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and some of the Loeb classics, I am very happy with my collection now.

    • @InsertLiteraryPunHere
      @InsertLiteraryPunHere  2 роки тому

      Wow, 3,000 books! Incredible. I had a similar feeling when I lived abroad and could only access English-language books on my Kindle--it really simplifies things. Now I really like having a hybrid system where I own some books physically, but others (especially new releases) I only borrow electronically through my library

    Well done - almost half of them gone! But three things spring to mind: first you must read Levy’s Man who saw everything - it’s brilliant! Second is you can’t just read course materials during your masters - have some lighter reading to see you through. And thirdly, I am definitely NOT going to follow suit - this week I am reading Alias Grace which I bought in 1996 and there are lots more like that on the shelves!

    • @InsertLiteraryPunHere
      @InsertLiteraryPunHere  2 роки тому +1

      Totally agree about having some lighter reading during the course, but I think I'd rather have it be spur-of-the-moment choices based on casual visits to libraries and bookstores! I guess I'm realizing that I don't want my own shelves to function as a bookstore, and I only want them to act as a library for rereading

    I also struggle to unhaul books I haven’t read yet (but am ruthless once I’ve read it-I get rid of most of the books I read unless I truly love them), so I applaud you for unhauling 9 tbr books!!

    • @InsertLiteraryPunHere

      I'm definitely more on your page now and getting much more comfortable unhauling certain types of books I've already read. But the whole time I was editing this video I was like "who even am I??" because I never do this kind of thing with unread books! It was freeing though, I won't lie to you

    So sad to hear your thoughts on Sally Rooney … I read Conversations with Friends and did not enjoy it. But I am glad you were able to unhaul! I wish my husband would be willing to do this, but on some level he thinks he will read all of them!

    • @InsertLiteraryPunHere
      @InsertLiteraryPunHere  2 роки тому +1

      Haha I totally see where your husband is coming from! I had this conversation with a friend the other day--I was saying that one half of my brain thinks I'll read every book near the top of my TBR list, and the other half knows that's actually impossible, and the two halves don't acknowledge each other at all

    • @InsertLiteraryPunHere
      @InsertLiteraryPunHere  2 роки тому +2

      Oh Emily this was just my majority English-language contemporary fiction--I now have about 65 total TBR books on my physical shelves. (Totally agree with you though, can you imagine how freeing it would be if this were all?) BUT 65 is still pretty manageable, and maybe one day we'll both get down to 11 for real ;)

      @@InsertLiteraryPunHere My current tbr is 95 books and I'm hoping to be under 60 within the next two years. 11 books would be so freeing so here's hoping we both get there!

      @@InsertLiteraryPunHere I promise it’s less employable than you think lol. And yeah we got reading but a lot of my classes was stats and coding and stuff. But weren’t you working like full time in Russia as teacher?? (still going thru your backlog lol) idk maybe I’m being optimistic but if you was doin 40hrs a week I honestly think masters might be a load off..though part time work and learning 2 languages *on top* of the coursework might push it over the edge.. and grant/intern applications do admittedly suck ass. Is all your reading scholarly though ?? Last I left off you were debating the merits of being well-read v specialized (I know way too much about you 😂😂) surely you can incorporate some of the Central European lit you read into the channel ?? I think people would fuck wit that
