Well, seeing as how I have swapped from a Glock 19 to a CZ P01 as my carry gun..... I'd say that a Double Action/Single Action is still very relevant, and will remain so for decades to come.
Da/sa is far better for an edc gun. They are more reliable, safer, and a striker trigger will never come close to a single action trigger that’s been worked over. My pcr is sitting at a 6lb double and a 3.5 single. Very accurate pistol. Not that you can’t be as good with a striker pistol, you definitely can. I just think there’s more pros to the da/sa set up then striker for edc. Especially in a self defense situation.

I have a CZ75D COMPACT and it fits my big hands well, not as good as my 1911 pistols but better than the GLOCK. Excellent review. A lot of the younger people like those optics, and it is likely a matter of what you are accustom to and practice with. For me it throws the balance off and the esthetics of the weapon in appearance. Course I am OLD SCHOOL and favor the classics.
I'll never get rid of my P01 Omega because it's awesome but for me I carry a Glock while on duty so if I feel like carrying a CZ off duty I go for my P10C.
I like the additional safety I perceive carrying the classic CZs in DA & thumbing the hammer when I holster. The P01 with it’s aluminum frame has great weight balance & feel in the hand at only 2 oz heavier than the P10C. I do like the P10C as a modern striker fired polymer pistol, but CZ really perfected their old 75 style guns.
I have the CZ75 B full-size and a CZ 75 PCR that I love and plan to carry. On the PCR I changed out the factory sights and had truglo sights installed. I love both my C Z’s and so does everyone I let shoot them. Also changed grips to g10 thin grips for my small hands. Good video again sir.
Just got my P-01 back had it Cajunized with the pro package and added Lok Grip Slim grips and Tru Glo TFX pro sights. Feels great shoots like a dream and the sights are crazy very happy.
Thanks hrfunk. I'm absolutely sure that if I shot that comparison the P-01 would not come close. I had the chance to try a P-01 last Wed at my club practice. I liked it a lot, and agree that the longer heavier first trigger pull is a good safe measure for high stress situations where maybe the shooter puts his finger inside the trigger guard a little early. Pretty hard to just "touch one off" with that first pull on the P-01. Accuracy-wise and weight/ergos wise, it felt very familiar, which I guess suggests the folks at CZ aim toward a certain general ergonomic feel even when not identical. I didn't notice the lateral palm swells but did notice the far different texturing. The grip angle and backstrap/beavertail seemed to be very similar between the P-10C (which I shoot regularly) and the P-01. The single-action trigger pull on the P-01 was very nice, "buttery" I'd call it. But this particular fellow's P-01 had received some gunsmith care, including the trigger. I shoot 95% of my rounds with RDS and only 5% tops with irons. That would make the P-01 a big handicap, time-wise, for me. Accuracy-wise they'd be comparable, but it takes me longer to resolve the irons and the general target haze. If I wear a special pair of glasses with the reader up top on my right eye, I'm pretty quick with irons. But that's a range-only arrangement, that kind of optical solution.
Man, this is wild. I'm picking up a P10c later this evening - used but barely. I couldnt pass up the deal. This video has perfect timing as I've grown to respect Mr Funk's opinions very, very much.
Your conclusion that it boils down to what the shooter has trained most extensively with is, IMO, the correct one. Nice review and good shooting with both pistols.

Thanks Dario. I noticed the same thing. In the longer strings, the P10C caught up and ultimately got to the last shot faster. Even so, the P01 always seemed to get the FIRST shot off quicker.
What you learn earlier, often sticks the deepest. I have striker guns, but range use only. I use my hammer guns for what matters. All advantages are trade-offs. Growing up with CZ82, revolvers, P64, and my CZ-based Tristar, I tend not to trust a striker gun, always ready to fire, hoping something doesn't slip. Still best to practice with anything you have. :)
I have both of these guns also; P10C white nitride slide and a P01 Omega. I love CZ guns. For carry I would give the nod to the P10C as I prefer striker fired guns for game time use since I carry a Glock while on duty.
I love the P-01, being a steel-framed, DA/SA fan. Haven't got to try one yet; had an AP-01 Tactical years ago, but let her go as she was too big and heavy, and I tend not to just keep range toys/safe queens. Thanks Chief!
Nice comparison! The differences in the two guns were red dot vs. iron sights and DA/SA trigger vs. striker fired trigger. In my experience, I think the red dot is slower getting it on target initially but helps in follow-up shots or when switching targets. The DA/SA trigger shines when shooting 3 or more shots in rapid succession. In reviewing your results, they seem to follow these observations. No matter what the advancements, it is tough to beat a shooter experienced with his handgun.
You captured exactly what I was thinking. Clear, concise, spot on. I am an older guy, and I have friends even older than I am. Many of those guys were LEOs and military, like myself, and they are still 1911 and revolver men. They know their guns, have mastered them over decades, and their particular firearms are an extension of their hands at this point. They will never change. They CAN shoot well for sure. We get together, shoot as friends, have our little contests, and have fun. I would not want to be the home invader facing these guys for sure. It is funny, we really do not talk about who carries what very often. I think we all find that topic pointless at this time in our lives. Anyway, enjoyed your comment!
Interesting results. At close range I would have expected the reflex sight to be notably slower. At longer ranges I would have expected it to be faster and more accurate. However, the differences in performance in this video are so minute that they fall within the range of probable error. I suspect a first-time shooter would have an easier job of mastering the P10C trigger, but practice makes perfect with either system. My only recommendation is to mount a light on the P10C (or remove the light from the P01). I think this would provide a more realistic comparison. My biggest takeaway is don't get in a gunfight with H.R.
A competitive shooter would not bother to find the dot at 5 yards and possibly not at 7. The outline of the gun on the target would be seeing all that he needs to see and under the pressure of a defensive situation I think a person under that pressure would do the same
@@nomikes4392 That strikes me as a gamble considering the ramifications of a poor shot. In a match, that might be a wise strategy. In a gunfight, it could be problematic at best.
Howard I did a similar comparison p10f vs sp01 and p10f vs p09 with little to no difference in accuracy or time on target, 7 yards 10 yards 15 yards and 25 yards . I thought I would see the striker fire pistol do better on time compared to the hammer fired system not the case . Each to his own choice as you stated. I like all three of them lol! Are they tack drivers yes . Reliable yes ( only ammo related failures ) . You are only as good with what you train with . Thanks For all you bring to us K.
Seems to me that if one has good trigger control the dot will make good hits at distance quicker by a small amount. And that may be of value in competition or some rare civil encounters. If one snatches the trigger or has an unstable/unsteady grip, a dot is not going to help. For defensive shooting good mechanics and a naturally pointing pistol will allow effective rapid hits without direct focus on the sights. Just like seeing the tip of the arrow in one’s peripheral vision aids in accurate bare bow shooting, one does not have to look through the sights to use the sights
Howard, THANK YOU, this was a great video, very enjoyable, very factual, very well articulated and presented, and (at least for me) with unsurprising results. The obvious conclusion remains, “it’s the Indian, not the bow and arrow.” Both of these CZ’s are fine autoloaders. My brief comments that follow really apply more to ultra-modern versus traditional, than to these specific CZ weapons. CLEARLY, individuals should opt for what they feel most comfortable carrying and shooting, what they shoot better, what they (for solid reasons) believe provide better safety, durability, reliability, and accuracy. For me, that frequently means “older school” designs (although my current EDC is a Smith M&P 1.0 (law enforcement model), 4.25 inch barrel, chambered in 9x19mm, which is a striker-fired, polymer-framed firearm, thus not wholly archaic). Why do I generally prefer revolvers, 1911-Al’s, traditional DA/SA autoloaders, and other “well established” designs? Honestly, the fundamentally reason is I learned (60+ years worth or learning ) with these sidearms, I’m entirely comfortable with them, and I (even with aged eyes) can shoot them well, safely and confidently. Does this mean my college sophomore grandson shouldn’t enjoy, use and be proficient with “Glockish” semiautomatics? Of course it doesn’t. BUT - and imho this is an IMPORTANT “but” - neither does it mean the folks with approximately three decades - often much less - of shooting experiences should deride superior-quality traditional designs . . . OR their fellow shooters who favor them. I’ll conclude with a brief anecdote. About twenty years ago, I was shooting my S&W, .357 magnum, Model 627 Special Edition (five inch barrel) at the Quantico Shooting Club. The guy next to me was a Marine Reservist and a current FBI SA; he was shooting a Glock 17. He put essentially every shot on the target, however, VERY few in the X Ring. In double action, my six shots were fundamentally just as fast as his and (at 15 yards) were basically all X’s. He commented to me that my Special Edition Smith was a very nice firearm, but certainly not able to meet current law enforcement requirements. Snarkily, I reminded him of the FBI “Rule of Threes” and I suggested that the Bureau’s 1986 Miami tragedy might well have had a significantly different outcome, with highly accurate magnum fire from L and N Frames, rather than P+’s and 9mm’s largely from J Frames. I regret my sarcasm, but I would like to believe he might have considered my thesis . . . based on the evident results. Only hits count and virtually all handguns are quite poor instantaneous fight terminators.
@@hrfunk Thank you. It’s a VERY nice revolver. I especially like the brass bead front sight and the SA trigger pull is really crisp. Believe it or not, in Winter attire I can conceal it using a Cyclone holster. It’s also my favorite plinker; nothing like shooting pine cones, rusted cans and old fence post while walking for hours in heavy woods. And with standard pressure .38 Specials, there’s virtually no recoil. Have a good weekend.
@@roykiefer7713 I’m ashamed to admit, I could never bring myself to fire the one I had. It was new in the box when I bought it circa 2000. Whenever I wanted to shoot a 6” N-Frame .357 Magnum, I always opted for my Model 28. I could never bring myself to fire that limited edition M627. That’s why I eventually traded it. Silly, I know.
And there’s the plain truth. It comes down to how well someone trains with their chosen pistol. But what would be interesting, I think, would be for you to establish a set of baseline times for that drill but shot with your every day carry pistol or other favourite pistol. I think we would see slightly faster times right across the board because of your familiarity with the pistol. Great video, as always. Love the new split screen replay which, interestingly, showed that on that last drill the P01 was faster for the first shot even if slightly slower over all.
I Noticed that as well Alan, and I too thought it was interesting. In fact, I believe in all the replays, the P01 is as fast or faster to the first shot, but in the longer strings, the P10C catches up and eventually beats the P01 to the final shot. I think the faster first shot has to do with the iron sights being faster in terms of target acquisition than the optic. The faster follow up shots on the part of the P10C has to be tied to reacquisition after recoil. I suspect it’s linked to the grip/trigger characteristics of the P10C, but I haven’t quite nailed that down yet.
@@hrfunk Just curious which would be your preferred pistol if you set-out to shoot a set of best times for that drill. Which one do you feel most at home with?
In my mind, those are 2 different questions. I would say I feel most at home with the more traditional P01. As to which one I would select for a particular use? That would all depend on what I was going to use it for.
The impression I'm getting is you would rather carry the P01 or just depends on what you trained the most with? Which do you prefer the p01 or p10c? There is something about the grips on the older CZ pistols just fits right.
I like those grips better too. The P01, in my estimation, is more compact. Even though it's a little heavier, for a cold weather carry option I like the P01.
It comes down to weather you prefer hammer fired or striker fired pistols and polymer or aluminum frames. I prefer the hammer fired, aluminum framed P 01. The P 01 is about $200 more expensive though.
One thing I noticed and it was not mentioned was the timing of first shot. In real world encounter that is very important factor. The P01 seamed to be first on target in all the drills. So it leads me to reason not only the DA/SA system is still relevant and on parr with striker but that the RDS optic is little slower to acquire target. The place where RDS outmatches old school sights is at distance, there iron sights are still good but require longer time to aim and higher skill set to hit target. Great video, thanks!

What size dot do you have on that rds and will the dot stay in view during recoil? I do like the p01. I think it'd be close from the grip to the sp-01.
One thing I think I noticed is that the iron sights seem to be faster with first bullet placement on just about every test and being that your a good shot with deadly placement the iron sights win hands down ! Because if it only takes one bullet to kill you then the first bullet is the only one that counts!
Call me old fashioned, Chief, but having watched your videos throughout the years, I have grown to appreciate the older, vintage weapons, especially the revolvers(who are still very scarce out here in California, unless you want a 2020 Python). Plus I own two striker fired pistols- wouldn’t mind getting me something with a SA/DA trigger! Strange coincidence we were just discussing firearms with my swing shift officer who wanted to believe that higher capacity magazines on his Glock 19 was necessary compared to my Shield 1.0. My counter argument was that if he trained consistently with his Glock, he wouldn’t need a 30 round magazine because he would know where to put his shots in a defensive encounter, rather than just trying to mag dump every chance he got. My firearms instructor said that “If I need more than 10 rounds(CA COMPLIANT MAGAZINES) to defeat the bad guy then I have a problem, not the gun.”
That’s the age old debate when it comes to firearm ammunition capacity. You don’t have to look too hard these days to find 50 round drum magazines. I’m at a loss to come up with a practical application for them outside the military.
@@hrfunk Same! While the extra ammo is nice, it’s definitely not necessary if the shooter knows what he or she is doing. My swing officer’s still young- hopefully he won’t have to learn the hard way about shot placement. Plus ammo’s still expensive out here, so shot placement is definitely vital.
I've got the CZ P07 (DA/SA trigger like the P01) and the P10c, and the P07 rides my bedside table because of the added safety aspect of the trigger. I think DA/SA triggers are vastly underrated nowadays. They require more practice, though, at least for me.
Great comparison as always! While I don't own a P01 (yet!), I can honestly say my P10C and SP01, both with self-installed Cajun Gun Works performance parts, are by far my favorite and most accurate striker and hammer fired handguns. I was wondering if the P01 you highlighted is the standard decocker or Omega trigger system and if you have a preference for one over the other? I would also be interested in your opinion of the P07 vs these models.
My P01 is the Omega version, and I really do not have a preference along those lines. I've never been terribly impressed by the P07's I've handled. Given the choice, I would opt for the P01 over the P07. Thanks for watching!
@@hrfunk Your P-01 is not the Omega version. It’s the standard deckocker model. The P-07 is the omega style and they make P-01’s with the same omega system. You can really tell the difference from the hammer. Round original and triangular is Omega.
The P01 is virtually identical to my PCR (the major difference being my lack of a rail). I absolutely love the PCR and shoot it better than any non 22 handgun I own. I joke with my GNB's (gun nut buddies) that the PCR hates to miss. Be well, HR!
For me, I have found that at Seven yards or less, speed counts. Seven yards or more accuracy. I doubt that I would worry about where my red dot is when my threat is close to me. More times than not, if you're shooting at a threat, their gun is already out and being pointed at you, so you have a speed disadvantage before you have even started.
I'm currently carrying a CZ 75B, so I figure the two there are just passing fads. But then, I look longingly at my cap-and-ball revolver and wonder if innovation is really all that much of an improvement...
It seems that the polymer striker fired guns virtues are felt in manufacturing. They take less time to make and are less expensive. For a man with medium to smallish hands is trigger reach an issue on the compact da pistol?
Given the group profile of the P01, I don't think so. Then again, for someone with very small hands, any handgun with a double stack magazine might present a trigger-reach issue.
"So, wow, isn't that interesting!" 🤭 That's like driving the Japanese car at 35mph and your dads pickup at 50 because you like one better than the other! It's a handgun, a compromise at best and you get good with whatever spits the bullets you choose most often.. The only one to kinda validate "double tap" comparison is Jerry Miculek, and neither you or me are him (and he usually finds S&W to be best anyways 'cause, you know, they sponsor him). They're both fantastic guns and, though different in many ways, do the exact same job just as well. Plastic vs metal, striker vs hammer, ergonomics vs Glockish...that's a fair and quite obvious assessment for anyone that knows anything about guns. For what it's worth I'm getting one of the two for military service, and it's probably going to be the P01 for longevity and sturdyness. Or the P10C for weight. Or a G19 for reliability. Or a Phantom for capacity. I think I've made my point.
I have a P01 and a P07. I also have a S&W M&P 2.0 compact which would represent the P10c. I had the slide milled on the P07 and find that I carry it most of the 3 handguns. For me the piece of mind and safety when re-holstering with the hammer fired gun trumps the striker fired pistol for carry purposes. I also like the optic for threat focus vs. front sight focus. I do love the feel of the P01 but find myself carrying the P07 most when I’m in a situation that may dictate self defense concerns. The M&P is awesome but for carry i like the hammer. Proving once again it's the Indian not the arrow. I have found the same thing. About the only difference the RDS makes is flyers fly less especially as you move out in range. Inside of 15 yards I have found no significant difference. In accuracy and score. I have also been playing around with long range shooting at 40-50 yards. I shoot about as well in terms of number of hits but the irons are swiss cheesing the target and RDS is mostly either a good hit or a miss. The pistol does make a difference with irons. I shoot 1911s slightly better than striker fired pistol. I attribute the slight difference to the 1911 trigger.
I love my P-10c, but it is just a differently-shaped Glock clone, and the CZ-75 is only about 7 years older than the Glock. Both of them are Browning short-recoil guns - Johnny B. is the only clear winner here!
I like both, but P01 is a still produced classic metal gun small carry. I did a modern striker 9 w latest RDS vs Fiber Optic .45 people might want to look at as well trying to decide Red Dot vs Irons Modern vs Old ua-cam.com/video/fyLn8JtxJBA/v-deo.html . I really think Red Dot advantage is past 15 yard outlier shots that LE are far more likely to take (outside Outlier Hero Dicken that is)
From the trouble you've had in the past with the P10C's trigger system, I'd say it's a cursed striker fired pistol. Especially since the P01 was more or less able to match the P10C's performance.
Truthfully, I think the P10C is pretty representative of the genre. I may well repeat this exercise with some other old/new handguns. I’m considering a comparison between the traditional S&W Model 59 and an M&P 2.0. Maybe even a Beretta M9 vs. APX. I think the results may prove interesting.
Very interesting comparison, I've been shooting IPSC for about 4-5 years now and in the last years the trend of red dots on pistols seemed to be taking over and people claiming of it being a game changer, but I'm not so sure. Also unrelated, could do you do comparison like that between the P01 and a P07? I really like both of them but I feel like the P01 might feel better in my hands and for carrying eventually.

Furthermore, the Sig Sauer Academy Optics Firearms Instructors were recently contracted to teach LAPD Firearms Instructors on optics proficiencies. The Sig Sauer Academy Instructors are predominately US Marine Corp veterans.
@@hrfunk As I suggest before departments should do 1/3 (top 15% and lowest 15 % of qualifiers approximately) and track hit ratio for a few years. Red dot comes into play for the really far shots.
Why P01 has flashlight? It gives it advantage. I had both guns and there is no comparison. P01 is the nicest looking pistol but I would carry P10C - lighter, slimmer,easier to rack, flatter shooting.
Hello HR As I predicted the CZ won. You mentioned the difference in safety between the two trigger systems. I am amused by the people who freak out when they see a cocked and locked 1911. A steel thumb safety blocks the sear and a steel grip safety blocks the trigger. But they are fine with a piece of plastic in the trigger as the safety on a modern gun. Did I miss part 2 on the Eotech sight at the range?
@@hrfunk I think that is a great idea for a series!! I think people may be very surprised by something like, say, a Browning Hi Power, that has modern sights vs a glock, p-10c, or M&P. The differences are not nearly as massive as people make them out to be. I'd like to see the P-01 with some better sights get a rematch. I believe, for myself at least, red dots on handguns aren't faster than a good set of high-vis iron sights....in fact they are slower. I believe, again just my experience, that you really have to train a lot with RDS for them to be faster. Red dots on rifles are different as they don't have a reciprocating slide disrupting the sight picture, and you have four points of contact with the rifle so indexing is more natural. Where RDS shines on handguns is accuracy when the distance grows to 20+ meters. Again, great video!
HR, I guess I'm kind of a ''dinosaur'' when it comes to CZ's. I don't have either one of the guns you reviewed. I do have a CZ 75, but it's from the early 1980's, when Czechoslovakia was still a Communist country, and it was very difficult to get anything from CZ. You can't really compare the accuracy of the two when the P10C has a red dot on it. Obviously, it will be not only faster but more accurate the farther you move away from the target.
It’s interesting how at distance the p01 tended to get the first 2 shots off more quickly, by then the p10 would catch up at the end of the string. It was also interesting how the p01 shot a much tighter group at 15 yards. However, the p10 performed much better at short range when HR had to transition from center mass to headshot.
I feel your assessment was biased, which is not surprising considering the perceived difficulties you had with the P10C when you first got it. This is more a comparison of your skill and comfort level with each platform (since they are almost entirely different) than a comparison of the capabilities of each firearm. Just my observations and takeaway. I would likely perform better with the iron sights by the way, as I have a long history of difficulties acquiring the dot on open reflex sights when they are mounted on a pistol.
@@hrfunk I believe you are preferential to the P01 platform and it shows in your commentary regarding the performance of the P10C and its 'modern features' vs the P01. I'd prefer a comparison using just the iron sights on both. That would be more fair. Also, put a comparable flashlight on the end of the P10C. That way they are weighted a bit more equally at the muzzle. I am going to guess will still be nearly equal. To assume the striker fired pistol would produce any better results than the DA/SA pistol in the hands of a veteran, experienced shooter is a misplaced assumption in my opinion. I don't believe the 'modern enhancements' (polymer frames and striker systems are not modern by any means at this point, so I don't get this description to begin with) would improve the performance of one pistol over another in any meaningful way. Now, give a novice shooter both platforms, with iron sights on both, and then see if there is any differnece in their performance. Then I think we might see some significant performance differentials. Again, just my opinion.
I understand you believe I was being preferential to the P01. My question is how was I being so? I simply presented my opinion, certainly other shooters could draw different ones. As I stated in the video, I wasn't trying to present an "apples to apples" comparison. Rather I was trying to determine, in the hands of the same shooter, if the advancements incorporated into the design of the P10C would offer any significant performance advantages over and above the traditional CZ pistol design. Personally, I would not give either of these handguns to a novice shooter. I would develop their skills with other pistols, and then begin working with options such as the ones presented here at a later time. I don't think handing a novice shooter is going to demonstrate tremendous marksmanship skills with anything.

I understand you were not attempting to make an 'apples to apples' comparison. I actually don't believe I see any point in this comparison at all, other than to an attempt to demonstrate that the DA/SA trigger system coupled with iron sights and an aluminum frame is 'just as good as', or perhaps even superior to a striker fired system with a red dot and a polymer frame. I got the impression from your comments that you prefer the latter, and you believe the results support your preference. Again, just my take away. Thank you.
@@hrfunk Let's just say you gave the P01 every break in the commentary. I would too. I have been shooting dots since 1992 (Tasco P4 on a Model 14 in plate shoots). I have found to be true what was told to me by a Wilson Combat shooter who got paid to know: transitions with iron sights are faster but hits are more consistent with the dot at speed. I am open to that progress has been made with dots since 1992. More people using them and using them exclusively equates to progress in performance (see Sage Dynamics)

I just think there’s more pros to the da/sa set up then striker for edc. Especially in a self defense situation.
Also switched my full size carry from a Glock 19 to a CZ P07, love the DA/SA for appendix carry. I do however still carry a 43x in the summer months.

I have a CZ75D COMPACT and it fits my big hands well, not as good as my 1911 pistols but better than the GLOCK. Excellent review. A lot of the younger people like those optics, and it is likely a matter of what you are accustom to and practice with. For me it throws the balance off and the esthetics of the weapon in appearance. Course I am OLD SCHOOL and favor the classics.

I'll never get rid of my P01 Omega because it's awesome but for me I carry a Glock while on duty so if I feel like carrying a CZ off duty I go for my P10C.

I like the additional safety I perceive carrying the classic CZs in DA & thumbing the hammer when I holster. The P01 with it’s aluminum frame has great weight balance & feel in the hand at only 2 oz heavier than the P10C. I do like the P10C as a modern striker fired polymer pistol, but CZ really perfected their old 75 style guns.
I have the CZ75 B full-size and a CZ 75 PCR that I love and plan to carry. On the PCR I changed out the factory sights and had truglo sights installed. I love both my C Z’s and so does everyone I let shoot them. Also changed grips to g10 thin grips for my small hands. Good video again sir.

Just got my P-01 back had it Cajunized with the pro package and added Lok Grip Slim grips and Tru Glo TFX pro sights. Feels great shoots like a dream and the sights are crazy very happy.

I'm absolutely sure that if I shot that comparison the P-01 would not come close. I had the chance to try a P-01 last Wed at my club practice. I liked it a lot, and agree that the longer heavier first trigger pull is a good safe measure for high stress situations where maybe the shooter puts his finger inside the trigger guard a little early. Pretty hard to just "touch one off" with that first pull on the P-01.
Accuracy-wise and weight/ergos wise, it felt very familiar, which I guess suggests the folks at CZ aim toward a certain general ergonomic feel even when not identical. I didn't notice the lateral palm swells but did notice the far different texturing. The grip angle and backstrap/beavertail seemed to be very similar between the P-10C (which I shoot regularly) and the P-01.
The single-action trigger pull on the P-01 was very nice, "buttery" I'd call it. But this particular fellow's P-01 had received some gunsmith care, including the trigger.
I shoot 95% of my rounds with RDS and only 5% tops with irons. That would make the P-01 a big handicap, time-wise, for me. Accuracy-wise they'd be comparable, but it takes me longer to resolve the irons and the general target haze. If I wear a special pair of glasses with the reader up top on my right eye, I'm pretty quick with irons. But that's a range-only arrangement, that kind of optical solution.
Man, this is wild. I'm picking up a P10c later this evening - used but barely. I couldnt pass up the deal. This video has perfect timing as I've grown to respect Mr Funk's opinions very, very much.

Thanks Dario. I noticed the same thing. In the longer strings, the P10C caught up and ultimately got to the last shot faster. Even so, the P01 always seemed to get the FIRST shot off quicker.

What you learn earlier, often sticks the deepest. I have striker guns, but range use only. I use my hammer guns for what matters. All advantages are trade-offs. Growing up with CZ82, revolvers, P64, and my CZ-based Tristar, I tend not to trust a striker gun, always ready to fire, hoping something doesn't slip. Still best to practice with anything you have. :)
Love my P01 with CGW springs. I'll probably keep it forever as I had one before, sold it, and ended up regretting it.
I have both of these guns also; P10C white nitride slide and a P01 Omega. I love CZ guns. For carry I would give the nod to the P10C as I prefer striker fired guns for game time use since I carry a Glock while on duty.
I love the P-01, being a steel-framed, DA/SA fan. Haven't got to try one yet; had an AP-01 Tactical years ago, but let her go as she was too big and heavy, and I tend not to just keep range toys/safe queens. Thanks Chief!

Nice comparison! The differences in the two guns were red dot vs. iron sights and DA/SA trigger vs. striker fired trigger. In my experience, I think the red dot is slower getting it on target initially but helps in follow-up shots or when switching targets. The DA/SA trigger shines when shooting 3 or more shots in rapid succession. In reviewing your results, they seem to follow these observations.
No matter what the advancements, it is tough to beat a shooter experienced with his handgun.
You captured exactly what I was thinking. Clear, concise, spot on. I am an older guy, and I have friends even older than I am. Many of those guys were LEOs and military, like myself, and they are still 1911 and revolver men. They know their guns, have mastered them over decades, and their particular firearms are an extension of their hands at this point. They will never change. They CAN shoot well for sure. We get together, shoot as friends, have our little contests, and have fun. I would not want to be the home invader facing these guys for sure. It is funny, we really do not talk about who carries what very often. I think we all find that topic pointless at this time in our lives. Anyway, enjoyed your comment!

Interesting results. At close range I would have expected the reflex sight to be notably slower. At longer ranges I would have expected it to be faster and more accurate. However, the differences in performance in this video are so minute that they fall within the range of probable error. I suspect a first-time shooter would have an easier job of mastering the P10C trigger, but practice makes perfect with either system. My only recommendation is to mount a light on the P10C (or remove the light from the P01). I think this would provide a more realistic comparison. My biggest takeaway is don't get in a gunfight with H.R.

A competitive shooter would not bother to find the dot at 5 yards and possibly not at 7. The outline of the gun on the target would be seeing all that he needs to see and under the pressure of a defensive situation I think a person under that pressure would do the same
@@nomikes4392 That strikes me as a gamble considering the ramifications of a poor shot. In a match, that might be a wise strategy. In a gunfight, it could be problematic at best.
Howard I did a similar comparison p10f vs sp01 and p10f vs p09 with little to no difference in accuracy or time on target, 7 yards 10 yards 15 yards and 25 yards . I thought I would see the striker fire pistol do better on time compared to the hammer fired system not the case . Each to his own choice as you stated. I like all three of them lol! Are they tack drivers yes . Reliable yes ( only ammo related failures ) . You are only as good with what you train with . Thanks For all you bring to us K.

Seems to me that if one has good trigger control the dot will make good hits at distance quicker by a small amount. And that may be of value in competition or some rare civil encounters. If one snatches the trigger or has an unstable/unsteady grip, a dot is not going to help. For defensive shooting good mechanics and a naturally pointing pistol will allow effective rapid hits without direct focus on the sights. Just like seeing the tip of the arrow in one’s peripheral vision aids in accurate bare bow shooting, one does not have to look through the sights to use the sights

Howard, THANK YOU, this was a great video, very enjoyable, very factual, very well articulated and presented, and (at least for me) with unsurprising results. The obvious conclusion remains, “it’s the Indian, not the bow and arrow.”
Both of these CZ’s are fine autoloaders. My brief comments that follow really apply more to ultra-modern versus traditional, than to these specific CZ weapons. CLEARLY, individuals should opt for what they feel most comfortable carrying and shooting, what they shoot better, what they (for solid reasons) believe provide better safety, durability, reliability, and accuracy. For me, that frequently means “older school” designs (although my current EDC is a Smith M&P 1.0 (law enforcement model), 4.25 inch barrel, chambered in 9x19mm, which is a striker-fired, polymer-framed firearm, thus not wholly archaic).
Why do I generally prefer revolvers, 1911-Al’s, traditional DA/SA autoloaders, and other “well established” designs? Honestly, the fundamentally reason is I learned (60+ years worth or learning ) with these sidearms, I’m entirely comfortable with them, and I (even with aged eyes) can shoot them well, safely and confidently. Does this mean my college sophomore grandson shouldn’t enjoy, use and be proficient with “Glockish” semiautomatics? Of course it doesn’t. BUT - and imho this is an IMPORTANT “but” - neither does it mean the folks with approximately three decades - often much less - of shooting experiences should deride superior-quality traditional designs . . . OR their fellow shooters who favor them.
I’ll conclude with a brief anecdote. About twenty years ago, I was shooting my S&W, .357 magnum, Model 627 Special Edition (five inch barrel) at the Quantico Shooting Club. The guy next to me was a Marine Reservist and a current FBI SA; he was shooting a Glock 17. He put essentially every shot on the target, however, VERY few in the X Ring. In double action, my six shots were fundamentally just as fast as his and (at 15 yards) were basically all X’s. He commented to me that my Special Edition Smith was a very nice firearm, but certainly not able to meet current law enforcement requirements. Snarkily, I reminded him of the FBI “Rule of Threes” and I suggested that the Bureau’s 1986 Miami tragedy might well have had a significantly different outcome, with highly accurate magnum fire from L and N Frames, rather than P+’s and 9mm’s largely from J Frames.
I regret my sarcasm, but I would like to believe he might have considered my thesis . . . based on the evident results. Only hits count and virtually all handguns are quite poor instantaneous fight terminators.

Thank you. It’s a VERY nice revolver. I especially like the brass bead front sight and the SA trigger pull is really crisp. Believe it or not, in Winter attire I can conceal it using a Cyclone holster. It’s also my favorite plinker; nothing like shooting pine cones, rusted cans and old fence post while walking for hours in heavy woods. And with standard pressure .38 Specials, there’s virtually no recoil. Have a good weekend.
@@roykiefer7713 I’m ashamed to admit, I could never bring myself to fire the one I had. It was new in the box when I bought it circa 2000. Whenever I wanted to shoot a 6” N-Frame .357 Magnum, I always opted for my Model 28. I could never bring myself to fire that limited edition M627. That’s why I eventually traded it. Silly, I know.
And there’s the plain truth. It comes down to how well someone trains with their chosen pistol. But what would be interesting, I think, would be for you to establish a set of baseline times for that drill but shot with your every day carry pistol or other favourite pistol. I think we would see slightly faster times right across the board because of your familiarity with the pistol. Great video, as always. Love the new split screen replay which, interestingly, showed that on that last drill the P01 was faster for the first shot even if slightly slower over all.
I Noticed that as well Alan, and I too thought it was interesting. In fact, I believe in all the replays, the P01 is as fast or faster to the first shot, but in the longer strings, the P10C catches up and eventually beats the P01 to the final shot. I think the faster first shot has to do with the iron sights being faster in terms of target acquisition than the optic. The faster follow up shots on the part of the P10C has to be tied to reacquisition after recoil. I suspect it’s linked to the grip/trigger characteristics of the P10C, but I haven’t quite nailed that down yet.
@@hrfunk Just curious which would be your preferred pistol if you set-out to shoot a set of best times for that drill. Which one do you feel most at home with?
In my mind, those are 2 different questions. I would say I feel most at home with the more traditional P01. As to which one I would select for a particular use? That would all depend on what I was going to use it for.

The impression I'm getting is you would rather carry the P01 or just depends on what you trained the most with? Which do you prefer the p01 or p10c? There is something about the grips on the older CZ pistols just fits right.
I like those grips better too. The P01, in my estimation, is more compact. Even though it's a little heavier, for a cold weather carry option I like the P01.

It comes down to weather you prefer hammer fired or striker fired pistols and polymer or aluminum frames. I prefer the hammer fired, aluminum framed P 01. The P 01 is about $200 more expensive though.
One thing I noticed and it was not mentioned was the timing of first shot. In real world encounter that is very important factor. The P01 seamed to be first on target in all the drills. So it leads me to reason not only the DA/SA system is still relevant and on parr with striker but that the RDS optic is little slower to acquire target. The place where RDS outmatches old school sights is at distance, there iron sights are still good but require longer time to aim and higher skill set to hit target. Great video, thanks!

If I remember correctly the reticle has a 1 MOA dot inside a 32 MOA circle. That really helps it stay visible somewhere in the lens.

Most weigh empty guns? Glad to see you don't! I never carry empty guns and their loaded weight is infinitely more important to me.
One thing I think I noticed is that the iron sights seem to be faster with first bullet placement on just about every test and being that your a good shot with deadly placement the iron sights win hands down ! Because if it only takes one bullet to kill you then the first bullet is the only one that counts!
Call me old fashioned, Chief, but having watched your videos throughout the years, I have grown to appreciate the older, vintage weapons, especially the revolvers(who are still very scarce out here in California, unless you want a 2020 Python).
Plus I own two striker fired pistols- wouldn’t mind getting me something with a SA/DA trigger!
Strange coincidence we were just discussing firearms with my swing shift officer who wanted to believe that higher capacity magazines on his Glock 19 was necessary compared to my Shield 1.0. My counter argument was that if he trained consistently with his Glock, he wouldn’t need a 30 round magazine because he would know where to put his shots in a defensive encounter, rather than just trying to mag dump every chance he got.
My firearms instructor said that “If I need more than 10 rounds(CA COMPLIANT MAGAZINES) to defeat the bad guy then I have a problem, not the gun.”
That’s the age old debate when it comes to firearm ammunition capacity. You don’t have to look too hard these days to find 50 round drum magazines. I’m at a loss to come up with a practical application for them outside the military.
@@hrfunk Same! While the extra ammo is nice, it’s definitely not necessary if the shooter knows what he or she is doing.
My swing officer’s still young- hopefully he won’t have to learn the hard way about shot placement.
Plus ammo’s still expensive out here, so shot placement is definitely vital.
I've got the CZ P07 (DA/SA trigger like the P01) and the P10c, and the P07 rides my bedside table because of the added safety aspect of the trigger. I think DA/SA triggers are vastly underrated nowadays. They require more practice, though, at least for me.
They probably require more work from everybody, but I agree they work well and offer an added level of safety.

While I don't own a P01 (yet!), I can honestly say my P10C and SP01, both with self-installed Cajun Gun Works performance parts, are by far my favorite and most accurate striker and hammer fired handguns. I was wondering if the P01 you highlighted is the standard decocker or Omega trigger system and if you have a preference for one over the other? I would also be interested in your opinion of the P07 vs

My P01 is the Omega version, and I really do not have a preference along those lines. I've never been terribly impressed by the P07's I've handled. Given the choice, I would opt for the P01 over the P07. Thanks for watching!

@@hrfunk Your P-01 is not the Omega version. It’s the standard deckocker model. The P-07 is the omega style and they make P-01’s with the same omega system. You can really tell the difference from the hammer. Round original and triangular is Omega.

The P01 is virtually identical to my PCR (the major difference being my lack of a rail). I absolutely love the PCR and shoot it better than any non 22 handgun I own. I joke with my GNB's (gun nut buddies) that the PCR hates to miss.

I’m working more and more with the dots these days but I doubt I’ll ever have as much time with them as I do on iron sights.
For me, I have found that at Seven yards or less, speed counts. Seven yards or more accuracy.
I doubt that I would worry about where my red dot is when my threat is close to me.
More times than not, if you're shooting at a threat, their gun is already out and being pointed at you, so you have a speed disadvantage before you have even started.
Trying to quick draw when someone has you at gunpoint sounds dicey to me. Even if things end in a tie, you still lose.
I'm currently carrying a CZ 75B, so I figure the two there are just passing fads. But then, I look longingly at my cap-and-ball revolver and wonder if innovation is really all that much of an improvement...
It seems that the polymer striker fired guns virtues are felt in manufacturing. They take less time to make and are less expensive.
For a man with medium to smallish hands is trigger reach an issue on the compact da pistol?
Given the group profile of the P01, I don't think so. Then again, for someone with very small hands, any handgun with a double stack magazine might present a trigger-reach issue.
P01 with a laser vs. P10C with a red dot would be an interesting comparison.
"So, wow, isn't that interesting!" 🤭 That's like driving the Japanese car at 35mph and your dads pickup at 50 because you like one better than the other! It's a handgun, a compromise at best and you get good with whatever spits the bullets you choose most often.. The only one to kinda validate "double tap" comparison is Jerry Miculek, and neither you or me are him (and he usually finds S&W to be best anyways 'cause, you know, they sponsor him).
They're both fantastic guns and, though different in many ways, do the exact same job just as well. Plastic vs metal, striker vs hammer, ergonomics vs Glockish...that's a fair and quite obvious assessment for anyone that knows anything about guns.
For what it's worth I'm getting one of the two for military service, and it's probably going to be the P01 for longevity and sturdyness. Or the P10C for weight. Or a G19 for reliability. Or a Phantom for capacity. I think I've made my point.

I have a P01 and a P07. I also have a S&W M&P 2.0 compact which would represent the P10c. I had the slide milled on the P07 and find that I carry it most of the 3 handguns. For me the piece of mind and safety when re-holstering with the hammer fired gun trumps the striker fired pistol for carry purposes. I also like the optic for threat focus vs. front sight focus. I do love the feel of the P01 but find myself carrying the P07 most when I’m in a situation that may dictate self defense concerns. The M&P is awesome but for carry i like the hammer. Proving once again it's the Indian not the arrow.
I have found the same thing. About the only difference the RDS makes is flyers fly less especially as you move out in range. Inside of 15 yards I have found no significant difference. In accuracy and score.
I have also been playing around with long range shooting at 40-50 yards. I shoot about as well in terms of number of hits but the irons are swiss cheesing the target and RDS is mostly either a good hit or a miss. The pistol does make a difference with irons. I shoot 1911s slightly better than striker fired pistol. I attribute the slight difference to the 1911 trigger.
I love my P-10c, but it is just a differently-shaped Glock clone, and the CZ-75 is only about 7 years older than the Glock. Both of them are Browning short-recoil guns - Johnny B. is the only clear winner here!
I like both, but P01 is a still produced classic metal gun small carry. I did a modern striker 9 w latest RDS vs Fiber Optic .45 people might want to look at as well trying to decide Red Dot vs Irons Modern vs Old ua-cam.com/video/fyLn8JtxJBA/v-deo.html . I really think Red Dot advantage is past 15 yard outlier shots that LE are far more likely to take (outside Outlier Hero Dicken that is)
From the trouble you've had in the past with the P10C's trigger system, I'd say it's a cursed striker fired pistol. Especially since the P01 was more or less able to match the P10C's performance.
Truthfully, I think the P10C is pretty representative of the genre. I may well repeat this exercise with some other old/new handguns. I’m considering a comparison between the traditional S&W Model 59 and an M&P 2.0. Maybe even a Beretta M9 vs. APX. I think the results may prove interesting.

Very interesting comparison, I've been shooting IPSC for about 4-5 years now and in the last years the trend of red dots on pistols seemed to be taking over and people claiming of it being a game changer, but I'm not so sure.
Also unrelated, could do you do comparison like that between the P01 and a P07? I really like both of them but I feel like the P01 might feel better in my hands and for carrying eventually.

The Los Angeles Police Department is transitioning to optic mounted handguns for accuracy. Furthermore, the Sig Sauer Academy Optics Firearms Instructors were recently contracted to teach LAPD Firearms Instructors on optics proficiencies. The Sig Sauer Academy Instructors are predominately US Marine Corp veterans.
So I have heard. It will be interesting to see how that works for officers on the street.

@@hrfunk As I suggest before departments should do 1/3 (top 15% and lowest 15 % of qualifiers approximately) and track hit ratio for a few years. Red dot comes into play for the really far shots.
Why P01 has flashlight? It gives it advantage. I had both guns and there is no comparison. P01 is the nicest looking pistol but I would carry P10C - lighter, slimmer,easier to rack, flatter shooting.
How, precisely, does the flashlight off on advantage in these drills?

As I predicted the CZ won. You mentioned the difference in safety between the two trigger systems. I am amused by the people who freak out when they see a cocked and locked 1911. A steel thumb safety blocks the sear and a steel grip safety blocks the trigger. But they are fine with a piece of plastic in the trigger as the safety on a modern gun.

I think people may be very surprised by something like, say, a Browning Hi Power, that has modern sights vs a glock, p-10c, or M&P. The differences are not nearly as massive as people make them out to be.
I'd like to see the P-01 with some better sights get a rematch. I believe, for myself at least, red dots on handguns aren't faster than a good set of high-vis iron sights....in fact they are slower. I believe, again just my experience, that you really have to train a lot with RDS for them to be faster. Red dots on rifles are different as they don't have a reciprocating slide disrupting the sight picture, and you have four points of contact with the rifle so indexing is more natural. Where RDS shines on handguns is accuracy when the distance grows to 20+ meters.

I guess I'm kind of a ''dinosaur'' when it comes to CZ's. I don't have either one of the guns you reviewed. I do have a CZ 75, but it's from the early 1980's, when Czechoslovakia was still a Communist country, and it was very difficult to get anything from CZ. Good review, though, and like you, I like the older one better.

Not the same animal and P10C is not 'derived' from P01. For me I prefer the P01 trigger as I can't stand the P10C trigger cause I can't stand the glock trigger

You can't really compare the accuracy of the two when the P10C has a red dot on it. Obviously, it will be not only faster but more accurate the farther you move away from the target.
Perhaps, but I think the range portion of this video indicates just how little advantage the red dot actually bestows.
It’s interesting how at distance the p01 tended to get the first 2 shots off more quickly, by then the p10 would catch up at the end of the string.
It was also interesting how the p01 shot a much tighter group at 15 yards.
However, the p10 performed much better at short range when HR had to transition from center mass to headshot.
The P10c was not fun to shoot the ribs on the back hurt my hand kinda a wuss tho

Maybe. It has a shorter slide and barrel, so it may have risen more.
I feel your assessment was biased, which is not surprising considering the perceived difficulties you had with the P10C when you first got it. This is more a comparison of your skill and comfort level with each platform (since they are almost entirely different) than a comparison of the capabilities of each firearm. Just my observations and takeaway. I would likely perform better with the iron sights by the way, as I have a long history of difficulties acquiring the dot on open reflex sights when they are mounted on a pistol.

@@hrfunk I believe you are preferential to the P01 platform and it shows in your commentary regarding the performance of the P10C and its 'modern features' vs the P01. I'd prefer a comparison using just the iron sights on both. That would be more fair. Also, put a comparable flashlight on the end of the P10C. That way they are weighted a bit more equally at the muzzle. I am going to guess will still be nearly equal. To assume the striker fired pistol would produce any better results than the DA/SA pistol in the hands of a veteran, experienced shooter is a misplaced assumption in my opinion. I don't believe the 'modern enhancements' (polymer frames and striker systems are not modern by any means at this point, so I don't get this description to begin with) would improve the performance of one pistol over another in any meaningful way. Now, give a novice shooter both platforms, with iron sights on both, and then see if there is any differnece in their performance. Then I think we might see some significant performance differentials. Again, just my opinion.
I understand you believe I was being preferential to the P01. My question is how was I being so? I simply presented my opinion, certainly other shooters could draw different ones. As I stated in the video, I wasn't trying to present an "apples to apples" comparison. Rather I was trying to determine, in the hands of the same shooter, if the advancements incorporated into the design of the P10C would offer any significant performance advantages over and above the traditional CZ pistol design. Personally, I would not give either of these handguns to a novice shooter. I would develop their skills with other pistols, and then begin working with options such as the ones presented here at a later time. I don't think handing a novice shooter is going to demonstrate tremendous marksmanship skills with anything.
@@hrfunk By 'novice' I mean someone who is familiar with firearms and knows all the basics of firearms handling and fundamentals, but does not have a wide range of experience with several different platforms. I understand you were not attempting to make an 'apples to apples' comparison. I actually don't believe I see any point in this comparison at all, other than to an attempt to demonstrate that the DA/SA trigger system coupled with iron sights and an aluminum frame is 'just as good as', or perhaps even superior to a striker fired system with a red dot and a polymer frame. I got the impression from your comments that you prefer the latter, and you believe the results support your preference. Again, just my take away. Thank you.
@@hrfunk Let's just say you gave the P01 every break in the commentary. I would too. I have been shooting dots since 1992 (Tasco P4 on a Model 14 in plate shoots). I have found to be true what was told to me by a Wilson Combat shooter who got paid to know: transitions with iron sights are faster but hits are more consistent with the dot at speed. I am open to that progress has been made with dots since 1992. More people using them and using them exclusively equates to progress in performance (see Sage Dynamics)
