Wood turning - OSB and Pine Bowl

  • After some interesting recent projects with plywood, I thought that the next product to try was OSB wood! Needless to say, there was loads of splinters and dust. I am probably going to use the rest of the board to make a shelf, rather than try to turn it anymore!!! The finished bowl is 10 inch by 2.5 inches, and makes quite a nice fruit bowl. Pretty good for construction pine and OSB

I am blown away at how this turned out! I have to admit when you first started I wasn’t sure the OSB would finish very well. Boy was I wrong!!
    Well done my friend!!!

Thank you very much. It was made out of curiosity, and I expected it to fail, but it’s very unique. Cheers 👍

WOW, who knew you could turn OSB board. I personally hate OSB, so brittle and splinters like hell, but you have turned building site first fix timber into a beautiful bowl. Well done and thanks for sharing

Thank you very much for the kind comment. Yes, it was left over timber in my garage, so I just gave it a try. Thank for watching 👍

OSB, of all things. Who would have thought it would have turned out as it did? A sign of a true artist, to think out of the box. Brilliant!

Many thanks. I’m thinking of going one further soon, no pine, just osb!

Great looking bowl RDM. I used OSB as a column filler for a resin project and that was a mistake. OSB + resin was rock hard and it happened to be at the base of the vase making hollowing a nightmare. Love the effect with this one! All the best. Ray

Good to see that you broke up the somewhat plain grain of the pine with something. Not sure I would have ever used OSB though. But you left the bottom a little thick. That was your saving grace. The issue with OSB is that it has a tendency to delaminate at the wrong time. But keeping the bottom a little thicker you have come up with a beautiful piece. What we are able to see, the porous OSB sanded and finished very nicely. This is a good one. Thanks for sharing it.

Glue ups, and combinations really help bring simple pine to life ... plus they are cheap, so if it doesn't work out, it just goes on the firewood pile!

I admit it looks better than I expected. Unfortunately, OSB is very prone to moisture retention when not completely sealed. I would be surprised if the bowl holds up to any use. Then again, I thought OSB would look horrible as a bowl. LOL

Thank you. I was in two minds to completely seal it with varnish. Fingers crossed that it lasts! 😀

That's cool I would not have thought OSB would work for turning how are the edges are they rough I know how it is when you cut it with a saw it looks really good great job on thinking outside of the box thank you for sharing this have a good day. James

The parts you describe as OSB actually appear to be chip board, a different animal altogether..

Thank you for sharing your work-a rather different approach with your mix of readily available dry timber’s. Do you use the plain PVA wood glue, it looks like it. The special wood glues based on PVA but with other additives are pretty expensive. Do you have any of the glue you use, fail over time? I am about to start wood turning as a change from my metal machining and this looks a great way to start that is cost effective. Regards from a Leeds Pom living in Tasmania. Stay safe.👍😁🇦🇺🦘

Thanks for watching. I’ve used exterior evostick (blue bottle) for a couple of years and it’s fairly reliable. Although I’ve switched to gorilla recently and it feels really secure too. Good luck 👍

Why do bowl turners always seem to spread glue with their fingers?

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  2 роки тому

Perhaps a bad habit! I just like picking the dry glue off my fingers later on 😂👍

I have and use a great non-stick silicone glue brush. It works like a charm, keeps ones fingers & workpiece free of the stickiness and keeps me from wiping my sticky fingers on my pants!

Bernard, it is Superglue or CA Glue. He used it to strengthen the mortise.
I hope this translation works out. "Bernard, c'est Superglue ou CA Glue. Il l'a utilisé pour renforcer la mortaise."
