  • So in this video I’m pulling the front differential out of a 2004 Dodge ram 1500 I’ve done this job several times most of the time on the Dodge Dakota‘s and Dodge Durango‘s. It was pretty much the same except in this video and on this Dodge Ram I have to actually take the ball joint out of the upper control arm. And that is some really good stuff because I show you a super tip!! on how to remove it without destroying it.Also if you’re watching the video you’ll notice that I took out the torsion bar brace support. I really don’t think this was necessary but I did it prior to removing the ball joint upper control arm. With the hopes that I could pull the differential axles out without removing the wheels. That was unsuccessful. So I do not cover the torsion bar removal in the video. But it was only held in by 4 nuts and bolts. And you can simply pry it out from between the two of them. I hope the video was helpful God bless and have the best of days

    On my truck ('06 Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 5.7L Hemi) the 2 bolts at the very top of the differential were actually 18mm bolt head and 21mm nut. Not sure if the measurements you gave for those 2 were just mistaken or if this truck just had a different setup. But for anyone doing this, be prepared in case those bolts are larger than expected. The top front one is especially hard to get to. You have very little room to get a socket over it without it hititng the frame. Bad design. You need a deep socket, but not TOO deep, or it will hit the frame. I am going to cut these bolts a bit shorter, so that when they go back on, there is no thread sticking out past the nut, so that it's flush wiht the nut. That will allow me to use a shorter socket next time which will really help with removal.

    Awesome video bro! My front differential on my dodge ram 2004 1500 5.7 just broke on the passenger side where the two bolts go in , had put in on 4x4 yesterday and drove it a bit when i went to make a right turn i just heard a loud breake! Took it back looked under the truck and that image of the whole differential fell and hit the cross bar is really whats holding it up . I had changed the oil pan and gasket months ago and i had to bring the differential down to replace it. When i tried putting everything back i could not for the life of me put the two bolts that go in on the driver side thwy just kept hitting the oil pan. So i left it like that without those two bolts. And put the 3 bolts and two passeneger . Now this is what i get for not putting the bolta back. Im thinking just getting same bolts and figuring out how to get them in so it could hold differential up even with the broken passenger layour were the two bolts hold it up?

    So you accessed both top bolts from the front side of the diff? Just used and extended ratchet wrench? I’m having trouble getting the back side bolt.

    Great video. I have to change my front differential on my 2004 dodge ram 1500. Do you think it's doable without a lift? I'd be attempting it in my driveway......no garage.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Brian we greatly appreciate the kind words and we are very happy that you’re here
      No actually I took it out at the junkyard without a lift. It was relatively easy. The biggest problem you’re going to have is getting the axles out . Try to get that driver side axle out before you have the differential out if possible because that driver side differential likes to lock in place and not come off of the spindle on the inside of the differential sometimes it’s a real freaking nightmare……
      And if you try to take it out after you have it out of there it’s very difficult to hold the differential but also easier to take a hammer and knock it out when it’s laying on the ground so it’s a 50-50 thing.
      But it is a very simple differential for the most part to get out.

    I need some help with my 04 ram 1500, when I first got it I notice that it was missing the front cv axles and front shaft now I'm slowly starting to get the money together to buy them all new and get my 4x4 back but I'm not exactly sure if my front diff is ok or not and I really don't want to go installing new parts just to find out it was screwed later and have to take them back out, any advice on what I should test out / try out to know its in working condition? btw love the vid very informative and awesome camera positioning.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  5 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words Ricky,
      OK a lot of people think that these front differentials go bad because the intermediate shaft on the Driver side wares out. And yes the differential does go bad but they are not terribly expensive and are fairly easy to change relative to other front differential’s. And the pointers I gave you and the video will help you a great deal and save you a couple of dollars. I recommend getting a front differential from a pick you part. But you can pull the front cover and if there’s a ton of metal shavings or gears missing off of the teeth then it definitely needs a new one most the time even the novice amateur mechanic should be able to tell if it’s good or bad by just looking at it. I’m not saying that Looking is the only way you can tell but if you use your brain I’m certain that you’ll be able to tell if it’s bad you may have a bad bearing or something on the inside of it and realized it for the hundred or $150 it cost to replace the front differential is probably worth the money anyways. I wish I could get into it more deeply but it would be difficult to explain every nuance so I hope the little bit of information I gave you is helpful

So if you did what I did there just turn the volume down and let my videos play from front to back that’s how I get paid take it easy I hope the video was helpful for you bro

      The places that I get them from are usually the yards that let you pull them yourself
      Or I’ve Been using this website for a little over 10 years now that doesn’t collect information or cookies there called car-part.com When you open it up you just put in your ZIP Code and they will tell you all the reputable salvage yards in your area that have the part you’re looking for I tried to get them to sponsor the channel but they wouldn’t I still think that they’re the best because all the junkyards have to pay to be on their site so they’re all very reputable and it’s not cheap to be on that site it’s also super simple to operate

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  4 роки тому +1

      Well that is possible on most vehicles.
      Problems that could possibly occur
      Without the axle there it’s possible that the front wheel bearings may go bad because they’re designed to have the axle go through them to hold them together
      It is also possible that the transfer case needs the front driveshaft for it says send power to the rear wheels so first you would want to remove your driveshaft from the transfer case to the front differential and make sure it was still going to gear and move.
      I do believe if I remember correctly on this vehicle it is possible
