That's great, here's a story. I was 20 when those things came out, was in a meth house, wrote a hot check at Target, got one and Mortal Kombat Trilogy and played the game for 3 days straight & realised just how stupid drugs are. Good parents are great, know we don't all get to have 'em. I woke up one Christmas eve to find my dad playing the Atari 2600 Pac-Man I wasn't supposed to see yet. Blessed to have good parents. I run Nintendo 64 off a PC these days, love that system.

It actually is retro now. It came out 20+ years ago, the graphics do not hold up very well in todays standards, controllers not even wireless.. Like how is it not retro in 2022? We already have the PS5 now.
@KT Thats you being entitled to your own opinion. Game graphics now are much better and higher quality than before and theres no denying. Of course, not all games have great graphics. But games like God Of War, BOTW, Uncharted, The Last Of Us etc.. have beautiful graphics that literally stomp old games. Newer game graphics are much better than old games whether you like it or not. Old games, like I said, do not hold up in todays standards with graphics. This will be the same in a couple of decades with the current games we have.

I was telling my girlfriend the other day how the n64 was the first console I ever bought with my own money. It was the summer of '97, and I was 12 years old heading in to 7th grade. Having a birthday in June greatly helped my money situation but it was still tough. I also had to buy an RF switch for the console when I bought it so I wasn't able to afford a game. I could only play rentals until Christmas of that year when I got Diddy Kong racing, and the first game I rented was of course Mario 64. I had a friend who let me borrow wave race 64 so I played a ton of that. funny how my memory of this console are so clear even 20 years later. definitely a special time.
gaming was so special back then man, I have similar memories. Renting games was an event. Spend all weekend getting in as much time as you could. No stress or worries. Just good times actually playing with the person next to you. Modern gaming is cool but some special elements of yesterday have vanished with it.
+mrkyle316 The biggest one being buying a game, pitting it into your console, turning it on and just playing. No download to system or day one patches.
you know it, I had to go without 6 whole cans of Bud Light or whatever other trash I drank in college. Sacrifices. Though I did sell my CIB Ogre Battle 64 back then, in perfect mint condition, for like $60. Could kick myself. Probably just spent it on pizza and beer, what a waste.
Yep, trying to clear the single player as fast as possible, and there was so many different ways you could approach each stage, I lost so many hours on the multiplayer though, game was too fun, and still is just as fun today. The sequel is nice too, feels like traditional Bomberman combined with the original 64 game but crazy expensive, and I have a soft spot for Bomberman Hero, was a pretty simple mascot platformer but had a really good soundtrack, and was simply fun to play.
What an iconic system. As a dude in his late 30s I grew up with Nintendo and the changing of the video game landscape. The jump from Super Nintendo to the 64 coincides with me hitting high school in 96’ lol very great memories. Thanks for this video guys!!!
Great episode, the N64 released in September 1996 in the U.S. I pre-ordered it and picked it up day one at Electronics Boutique. The console and Mario 64 were groundbreaking! I love Kinsey, great personality and I love her ‘Betty Rubble’ laugh!
Still love playing my N64! Lucky enough to get one Christmas 1996 and because it uses cartridges (No lasers or moving parts!) it still works fine and can last a very long time!
If you want to buy a n64 and really don't know the games, consider this buying guide instead: For multiplayer purposes: Smash bros. Goldeneye Perfect Dark Mario Kart Pokemon Stadium 1,2 Single player: Zelda Ocarina of Time Zelda Majora's Mask Star Fox Banjo Kazzooie Super Mario 64 Others that I think are good: Wave Race Win Back F Zero X Donkey Kong 64
I just stumbled upon MetalJesusRocks less than a month ago and I just wanted to say this is easily one of my favorite finds on UA-cam in quite some time. I appreciate how wide-ranging your topics are, the down-to-earth nature of you and your collaborators, As a N64 lover this was a great guide... definitely recommend for those who didn't grow up with the console!
Man. I agree. I still love my N64. I am trying to collect for it a bit as well. I recently bought a couple racing games he mentioned in one of his videos for racing purposes, and I will agree. I love the racing games in general to be honest. N64 or not. But N64 does have a bunch of them. They are simple, elegant, have some interesting twists to them. One I remember, and I still have is hot wheels turbo racing. Was fun trying to figure out the levels and get all the secret hot wheels cars. Just an awesome system all around. It also has the coolest looking logo to. That triple 3 dimensional N thingy. Just looks legit. I honestly feel like the Gamecube is the coolest looking console overall. I just wish the gamecube had more colors. But it also had a cool logo as well.
I also love metaljesus vids. Found him recently as well, and I got more knowledge and incite about collecting as well. No idea about some of these facts and tid bits. In particular in regards to some of the games getting rare, and more sought after over the years. I never would have guessed that.
Greatest Ever I can tell by the way you type that you're under the age of about 15 at most. If not, you should honestly grow the fuck up, because you sound really immature.
I have a cheap knockoff controller, Harvest Moon 64, with already janky movement, is way harder than it usually is. I always end up throwing my crops away from the selling box and they go splat :(
As soon as he said racing games I instantly thought of Beetle adventure racing and I'm so glad he mentioned it. I LOVED that game and I still own it, it was really challenging but very fun.
Donkey Kong 64, Gauntlet Legends, Mario Party 3, Tarzan, Mortal Kombat 4 and Diddy Kong Racing are definitely my top picks for someone first picking up the console!! great vid metaljesus
Kinsey, you so silly lol. I think lots of nostalgia folks here remember playing Star Fox 64 with the Rumble Pak for the first time. Such a great experience and Nintendo needs to do right for Star Fox games.
My dad got this for me at one point for.... 600 deutsche marks. Which was really a lot at the time. I literally played Mario 64 for a year, every day to try and finish it. As well: Diddy Kong Racing was aaaaamazing. The exploration, the races themselves. The music ? Oh the music, I can still hear it, no joke, 20+ years later. Its such a shame that it has not gotten the Spiro treatment and a full remake. It would sell so well.
Any idea why the N64 library was so racer heavy? Not that that's a bad thing, some of its best games are in that genre. EDIT: kudos for your mention of Mischief Makers. What a gem of a game. The community is beginning to catch on and the price has been rising lately, so you might want to grab a copy sooner than later.
The controls took a little getting used to, but Blast Corps was a really good (and underrated) title for the console. Shadows of the Empire is also worth a look.
I am so glad that Banjo Kazooie made your list! Super Mario 64 was the groundbreaker for 3D platformers; Banjo Kazooie is the one that got it just right! I LOVE it! And I'm also glad that you picked Diddy Kong Racing over Mario Kart 64. I'm a huge Mario Kart fan and have tons of hours logged on the newer ones (Double Dash and newer), but Diddy Kong Racing is where it's at for N64!
When I first held a N64 controller, I HATED it. Up until that point, I played on the NES, SNES, Genesis, and Saturn controllers. So, as you can imagine when I first held it, I was like "....what the heck?". It felt great holding the both ends of the controller, but holding the middle and the right side, FREAKIN' WEIRD! But once I got past that awkward phase, I don't even notice it. It became 2nd nature.
Before watching, I'm gonna say that this was the perfect recommendation from YT. I recently acquired a SNES and a GameCube and started collecting games for those and the NES (that my parents had since before I was born, has been my most used (non-handheld) console throughout my child- and teenagehood and is now in my possession), but I'm still looking for a reason to get an N64 in the future, to complete the retro console collection. Unlike the GameCube and SNES, I neither played on the N64 with friends who got it, nor does the console itself look very attractive to me, in terms of it's Design. So it has to be the games that can make it desirable to me, but apart from Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Star Wars Podracer, (which I got on PC, but couldn't get running properly since way back when my family upgraded to a Windows XP computer and emulation hasn't worked out so far), I could use some more interesting game recommendations that I'd wanna play on the system. So let's see!

Used they want like 50.00 for Banjo Kazooie, and more for other games that are used. You can download it to xbox 360 for 15 bucks, I did and having played it on Nintendo the only difference I saw was in the intro movie on mumbos instrument where Nintendo was before they put Microsoft. Other than that it was literally the same game. Nintendo screwed that pooch really, losing RARE.
9:00 I've had my N64 grey controller since '97 when I got the console as a present for Christmas. The controller's stick is floppy, obviously. But still works fine for every game I throw at it. 😁😁😁
The N64 I picked up today had an expansion card in the system. Super happy that it did, the seller didn't mention it so doubt they even knew that whoever sold it to them had one in there
@@rembert0319 Why Gamecube? Component cables are like $200... Nintendo Wii is $10-$20 component cables. And backwards compatibility. And overall cheaper.
Core Hazard as tall as "shit mountain " lol I actually just bought in box with the strategy guide for 105 plus tax and shipping, that's actually a pretty decent deal. I look forward to playing it for the first time.
@@f12got49 conker reloaded detail was shit conker n64 was dark that why they not popular ya know that and oh also conker n64 graphics was way more awesome.
The HDMI cable is nice because it allows you to use modern tv's and to see details that you might not have seen back in the day. On the other hand, it allows you to see details you weren't supposed to see back in the day. Those jagged edges would have been smoothed out with most period analog tv sets.
I remember when I finally got my own N64 at Gamestop in 03 for 30 bucks, after years of playing it at my cousin's house. I still have that console and eventually got the games that I sold off back. As for recommendations that you didn't mention I guess Star Wars Rogue Squadron is pretty much it, though you can get the PC version on GOG nowadays instead. Though honestly I would recommend folks stay away from Perfect Dark on the N64, as even with the expansion pak it's still really rough, and only gets rougher if you turn on Hi-Res, and widescreen on, on that note the 3DS versions of Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask are fantastic, same with Perfect Dark, and both Banjo games on XBLA. Also one game I forgot to mention, the original Paper Mario, which to me is still a fantastic rpg, and now I really want to replay it, and The Thousand Year Door too, lastly guess Star Fox 64 as you mention the rumble pak.
Go easy on me please. I obviously saw the flipping finger. But i thought it means "Oh, superman 64, you're a quite retarded game but we still love you, and we are including you in honorable mentions section anyways"
ahmet çavuş knowing nothing of the Superman game at the time of watching this video, I took it the same way, you suck, hard as shit and frustrating but oh so good. so I understand your stance completely. after watching some gameplay videos, I can't think of a game on the console that looks that horrible. I'm kind of surprised jetforce Gemini wasn't mentioned, but I haven't seen the hidden gems video yet either. I'm excited to play donkey Kong 64 I wasn't aware that it even existed, it looks so freaking awesome, can't wait!
Mario Kart 64, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron, Pilotwings 64, Killer Instinct Gold, StarFox 64, Gauntlet Legends, Ready 2 Rumble, Madden 64, Madden 2000, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 4, NFL Quaterback Club 99. NFL Quaterback Club 2000, WCW vs NWO World Tour, WCW vs NWO Revenge, Turok, Turok 2, Waverace 64, Bomberman 64, 1080 Snowboarding, WWF WarZone, Wrestlemania 2000, WCW Nitro (better on PS1), WWF Attitude, Nuclear Strike, and for fun South Park lol.
I was so disappointed that the 64DD failed, I was really looking forward to it, especially when Earthbound 64 was announced. Unfortunately that ended up being cancelled for other reasons.
I just started getting into the earthbound games I'm almost done mother 2... or earthbound whatever you want to call it. But I don't see how this game isn't more popular it's absolutely amazing.
Skullkid Majora There are a lot of theories about why it failed, but it's actually extremely popular now, it's a cult classic. It's gotten to the point where a complete in box copy will run you upwards of $1,000 on ebay. Which is actually a shame and really stupid, it's anything but rare. At least it got a re-release on the virtual console but unfortunately the Wii U failed as well.
+necrogenesis1981 the only reason I got into the game was because ness was a interesting character and I wanted to learn more about him. I never heard of earthbound any other place outside of smash which is sad because nintendo had a real winner with this game. Its now my favorite turn based rpg.
Yeah, that was the case with most people, especially if you come from a younger generation. I'm 35, not sure how you are, but I was fortunate enough to own it when it came out. For me it's more than a favorite, it's sentimental.
There's actually a pretty decent amount of awesome games, depending what you're looking for. A good amount of them weren't super popular...stuff like Body Harvest or Beetle Adventure Racing etc.
Jason Avocado i was sure bar was going to be in the list, they must have made an agreement, one odd game each, bar and snap, otherwise cbfd and 007 would be in their place.
Ya, when I think of day 1 buying guides, its the more collective favorites for the system and not really personal favorites unless it comes to a tie between 2 games. So Goldeneye would have to be #3 or #4 on the system. Even though I'm not a fan of all these games, I would have put: Mario 64, Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Zelda OOT, Smash Bros, F Zero X, WWF No Mercy, Star Fox, Pokemon Stadium, and Banjo Kazooie. Maybe swap in Donkey Kong 64 in place of Banjo Kazooie, or Pokemon Snap in place of Stadium. But there you have your Mario games, Zelda games, arcade racer, wrestling, Pokemon, Star Fox and another 3d platformer, basically cover all the series and genres that were popular on the system. Some of my more favorite games on the system would just be put on the honorable mention list: Harvest Moon, Paper Mario, Majoras Mask, Resident Evil 2, THPS2, Episode 1 Racer, Rogue Squadron, Shadows of the Empire, the Goemon games, Perfect Dark, Conker's, etc.
The World is Not Enough is better than Goldeneye tho, Goldeneye was only so popular back then mainly becasue of the multiplayer which hasn't aged well obviously.
Goldeneye was definitely better than TWINE. I've been playing TWINE recently since I am reviewing all 007 games across all consoles and doing a side-by-side comparison, Goldeneye was much better (no wonder I didn't really get into TWINE back in the day while playing at friend's houses). Comparing TWINE on the N64 to the Playstation is the bigger debate.
Loving your content and approach, MJR! Thanks for all your efforts. I started with all this game content from AVGN years ago but wanted to expand elsewhere and just subscribed today! Thanks so much!
I still have my N64 connected to the tv. My kids prefer all the family friendly games om the console instead of all the action packed games on Xbox One and PS4.
families shouldn't be desperately hanging on to one company in order get thier KIDS *_V I D E O G A M E S_* stupid over grown weaboos feel like they need to prove how they're adults by playing m rated games and throwing money at PC tryhards that are ruining the market and the future. creating delinquents like a try Minecraft kid and "kid playing online shooter cringe" comps. the olny reason xbone and pis4 are sponging up Nintendos demographic is because they want to be adults and they think cursing and shooting is the way to do it because that's what the games tell you.
A really good college friend of mine got an N64DD for Christmas one year, which his family spent over $600 to get. He mainly shows me the F-Zero X Expansion Kit whenever we get together. He loves F-Zero!
Other honorable mentions my friends and I loved back in the N64 era was: Paper Mario, Turok series, Star Wars Shadow of the Empire, Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Kirby 64 and Mario Tennis & Golf.

Clayton Eugene i was gona say it hasnt been twenty years ... i turn twenty in lile 17 days...
Tyler Mcgilvery Believe it or not it turned twenty in 2016.
I share the same sentiment feeling.. brought a tear to my eye..
I never get tired of buying guides.
GOD why is Kinsey so freaking adorable
Superman 64 is definitely a must have.
me too, haha. got it back when CIB was just $5 extra on eBay like 12 years ago. Got that and Mission Impossible just because they were so bad.
you know it, I had to go without 6 whole cans of Bud Light or whatever other trash I drank in college. Sacrifices.
Though I did sell my CIB Ogre Battle 64 back then, in perfect mint condition, for like $60. Could kick myself. Probably just spent it on pizza and beer, what a waste.
For those "glowing 1000 degree knife versus..." videos.
To a Superman 64 cart any day of the week.

I recommend Bomberman 64 to any new owners, that was my favorite game for the system by far.
Shaolin Turtle Spent so many hours on that.
The multiplayer mode was the shit !!
same here, it was one of my favorites
I'm so sick of winning at bomberman
What an iconic system. As a dude in his late 30s I grew up with Nintendo and the changing of the video game landscape. The jump from Super Nintendo to the 64 coincides with me hitting high school in 96’ lol very great memories. Thanks for this video guys!!!
Same here brother except I'm 41 this yr and I started HS in 96 as well but I know and agree with your comment
Great episode, the N64 released in September 1996 in the U.S. I pre-ordered it and picked it up day one at Electronics Boutique. The console and Mario 64 were groundbreaking! I love Kinsey, great personality and I love her ‘Betty Rubble’ laugh!
I think im going to play TF2 today.
*sees MetalJesusRocks in Subscription Box*
Well, TF2 can wait.
Me, exactly.
I remember when I was a kid I had the PS1 and my bestfriend had the N64 and we would always go to eachothers house to play games. It was so much fun.
Still love playing my N64! Lucky enough to get one Christmas 1996 and because it uses cartridges (No lasers or moving parts!) it still works fine and can last a very long time!
From 6:12 to 6:14, Metal Jesus's instant facial expression change.

If you want to buy a n64 and really don't know the games, consider this buying guide instead:
For multiplayer purposes:
Smash bros.
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Mario Kart
Pokemon Stadium 1,2
Single player:
Zelda Ocarina of Time
Zelda Majora's Mask
Star Fox
Banjo Kazzooie
Super Mario 64
Others that I think are good:
Wave Race
Win Back
F Zero X
Donkey Kong 64
good list, I'd personally add paper mario for single and mario party(s) for multiplayer
Yeah more like it. Don't understand why anyone would choose Pokemon snap over the Stadium games...
you forgot superman 64
Forgot Diddy kong racing...
Pokemon Stadium fuck yeah!! Such a fun multiplayer, for the battles with rented pokemons and for the minigames

I just stumbled upon MetalJesusRocks less than a month ago and I just wanted to say this is easily one of my favorite finds on UA-cam in quite some time.
I appreciate how wide-ranging your topics are, the down-to-earth nature of you and your collaborators,
As a N64 lover this was a great guide... definitely recommend for those who didn't grow up with the console!
Man.
I had the Pikachu one. I had so much fun playing Mario Party/ Super smash with my friends during the summer. Nostalgia :(
Favorite thing I’ve heard all year: “IM JUST TRYING TO MAKE THIS SOUP FOR BULBASAUR!”

That is the correct thing to be done, sir

look up game sack for that
I never realized people didn’t like the n64 controller I loved it other than how easily the joystick wore out
I have a cheap knockoff controller, Harvest Moon 64, with already janky movement, is way harder than it usually is. I always end up throwing my crops away from the selling box and they go splat :(
Didn't know you worked for Sierra! Thanks for helping make some of my favorite childhood games.

As soon as he said racing games I instantly thought of Beetle adventure racing and I'm so glad he mentioned it. I LOVED that game and I still own it, it was really challenging but very fun.
It was such a surprise. I picked it up randomly at a blockbuster and my brother and I loved it. They nailed the fun factor.

I love Kinsey! She's the coolest person! So unique and Beautiful inside and out
Kinsey is such a natural in front of the camera. Always fun to watch.
Kinsey, you so silly lol. I think lots of nostalgia folks here remember playing Star Fox 64 with the Rumble Pak for the first time. Such a great experience and Nintendo needs to do right for Star Fox games.
‘Memory Expansion Bay’ would be an awesome name for a band
My dad got this for me at one point for.... 600 deutsche marks. Which was really a lot at the time. I literally played Mario 64 for a year, every day to try and finish it. As well:
Diddy Kong Racing was aaaaamazing.
I recommend Vigilante 8 to anyone who has ever played Twisted Metal or Interstate 76 as it is like both of those games merged into one.
Kinsey's excitement really shines through in this video. Adorable.

The controls took a little getting used to, but Blast Corps was a really good (and underrated) title for the console. Shadows of the Empire is also worth a look.
Blast corps is my favorite game on the N64. The soundtrack is such a banger!
My top N64 game recommendations:
- Super Mario 64
- Mario Kart 64
- Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Starfox 64
- Goldeneye
- F-Zero X
When we first got ours, back in the day, my mom held the controller upside-down. HAHA!! ;)
Metal Jesus rocks.
This is just my opinion.

I love n64, it’s literally one of my favorite Nintendo systems, I’ve been thinking about making a UA-cam channel specifically for the system
Kinsey style in this video is 10/10
Did you seriously recommended Superman 64 or was it just a joke?
+ahmet çavuş please tell me how you did NOT see the middle finger flipping off the game?!?
You seriously never understood the joke.
Go easy on me please. I obviously saw the flipping finger. But i thought it means "Oh, superman 64, you're a quite retarded game but we still love you, and we are including you in honorable mentions section anyways"
I perfectly understand sarcasm when I see it, yet a vast majority don't.
ahmet çavuş knowing nothing of the Superman game at the time of watching this video, I took it the same way, you suck, hard as shit and frustrating but oh so good. so I understand your stance completely. after watching some gameplay videos, I can't think of a game on the console that looks that horrible. I'm kind of surprised jetforce Gemini wasn't mentioned, but I haven't seen the hidden gems video yet either. I'm excited to play donkey Kong 64 I wasn't aware that it even existed, it looks so freaking awesome, can't wait!

I was so disappointed that the 64DD failed, I was really looking forward to it, especially when Earthbound 64 was announced. Unfortunately that ended up being cancelled for other reasons.
Fire emblem 64 was also going to be on the N64 DD :'(
I just started getting into the earthbound games I'm almost done mother 2... or earthbound whatever you want to call it.
That grip technique is wild.

i was sure bar was going to be in the list, they must have made an agreement, one odd game each, bar and snap, otherwise cbfd and 007 would be in their place.
Goldeneye should be in all top 10 n64 lists. Come on
Ya, when I think of day 1 buying guides, its the more collective favorites for the system and not really personal favorites unless it comes to a tie between 2 games.
Brandonsaurus64 But Goldeneye Rogue Agent didn't come out for the N64. (sarcasm)
The World is Not Enough is better than Goldeneye tho, Goldeneye was only so popular back then mainly becasue of the multiplayer which hasn't aged well obviously.
That's simply not true, the multiplayer is still as fun today is it was back then.
